20:18 보라 우리가 예루살렘으로 올라가노니 인자가 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 넘겨지매 그들이 죽이기로 결의하고

20:19 이방인들에게 넘겨 주어 그를 조롱하며 채찍질하며 십자가에 못박게 할 것이나 제삼일에 살아나리라

[Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time]

17 Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

20:20 그 때에 세베대의 아들의 어머니가 그 아들들을 데리고 예수께 와서 절하며 무엇을 구하니

[A Mother’s Request]

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.

20:21 예수께서 이르시되 무엇을 원하느냐 이르되 이 나의 두 아들을 주의 나라에서 하나는 주의 우편에, 하나는 주의 좌편에 앉게 명하소서

21 “What is it you want?” he asked.

She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”

20:22 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 너희는 너희가 구하는 것을 알지 못하는도다 내가 마시려는 잔을 너희가 마실 수 있느냐 그들이 말하되 할 수 있나이다

22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”

“We can,” they answered.

20:23 이르시되 너희가 과연 내 잔을 마시려니와 내 좌우편에 앉는 것은 내가 주는 것이 아니라 내 아버지께서 누구를 위하여 예비하셨든지 그들이 얻을 것이니라

23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

20:24 열 제자가 듣고 그 두 형제에 대하여 분히 여기거늘

20:25 예수께서 제자들을 불러다가 이르시되 이방인의 집권자들이 그들을 임의로 주관하고 그 고관들이 그들에게 권세를 부리는 줄을 너희가 알거니와

20:26 너희 중에는 그렇지 않아야 하나니 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고

20:27 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 너희의 종이 되어야 하리라

20:28 인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라

24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

                화요일 말씀에 모든 것을 버리고 예수님을 따른 제자들의 질문에 예수님께서는 이렇게 대답하십니다. 19:28 “세상이 새롭게 되어 인자가 자기 영광의 보좌에 앉을 때에 나를 따르는 너희도 열두 보좌에 앉아 이스라엘 열두 지파를 심판하리라” 열두 보좌라는 말씀 만으로도 너무나 큰 영광이지요. 그런데 오늘 말씀을 보니 이들은 그 중 누가 으뜸이 될 것인가 라는 주제로 서로 암투를 벌이고 분히 여기는 모습을 보게 됩니다. 그런 그들에게 예수님께서는 이들이 진정 크고자 한다면 섬기는 자가 되라고 말씀하십니다. 오늘은 “세상의 본이 아닌 예수님의 본을 따르라”는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

In Tuesday’s message, responding to the disciples who had left everything to follow Him, Jesus said: "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel" (Mt 19:28). The promise of "twelve thrones" is an immense glory. However, in today’s passage, we see these same disciples engaging in a secret power struggle and becoming indignant over who will be the greatest among them. To them, Jesus declares that if they truly wish to be great, they must become servants. Today, I want to share a message titled: "Follow the Example of Jesus, Not the Example of the World."

                17-19절은 예수님께서 예루살렘으로 올라가시는 길에 세번째로 제자들에게 당신의 수난과 죽음, 또 부활을 예고하시는 장면입니다. 분명 지난번 그리스도의 수난에 대해서 말씀하셨을 때에는 17장에 보니 “제자들이 매우 근심하더라”라고 하였는데 오늘은 그런 기색이 없습니다. 왜 일까요? 이들은 지금 예루살렘으로 가고 있지요. 왕이 다스리는 도성, 예루살렘. 아마도 이들의 마음은 예루살렘에 가까워지면 가까워질수록 예수님이 예루살렘에서 왕으로 등극하시고 당신의 나라를 실현하실 것을 기대했을 것입니다. 자, 그러면 자신들은 어떻게 됩니까? 예수님이 말씀하셨던 열두 보좌. 마치 눈 앞에 있는 것 같았을 것입니다. 예수님의 수난과 부활은 지금 중요하지 않지요. 귀에 들리지도 않았을 것입니다. 예루살렘이 눈 앞에 있는 지금 그들의 모든 관심은 ‘누가 그 열두 보좌의 상석에 앉을 것인가’ 였을 것입니다.

[1. The Indifference to Suffering and the Lure of Jerusalem]

Verses 17–19 depict the third time Jesus predicts His suffering, death, and resurrection while on the road to Jerusalem. When He first spoke of His passion in chapter 17, the Bible says the disciples were "greatly distressed." But today, we see no sign of such sorrow. Why?

They were on their way to Jerusalem—the city of the King. The closer they got to Jerusalem, the more they expected Jesus to be crowned as King and establish His earthly kingdom. To them, the "twelve thrones" Jesus promised felt within arm's reach. In this state of mind, Jesus’ talk of suffering and resurrection didn't matter; it didn't even register in their ears. With Jerusalem in sight, their only concern was: "Who gets to sit in the seats of honor among those twelve thrones?"

                그 때, 요한과 야고보의 어머니가 나와서 예수님께 절하며 요청을 합니다. 나의 두 아들을 예수님의 최측근에 앉혀달라는 것이었지요. 자, 요청은 어머니가 했는데 예수님께서는 요한과 야고보에게 말씀하십니다. “너희는 너희가 구하는 것을 알지 못하는도다” 무슨 뜻입니까? 이 요청을 한 사람은 이들의 어머니인 것 처럼 보이지만 사실은 요한과 야고보라는 것입니다. 요한과 야고보가 어머니께 이렇게 하라고 시킨거에요. 그 예로 마가복음 10장에서도 같은 이야기가 나오는데 여기서는 이들의 어머니가 등장하지 않습니다. 예수님께서는 단번에 이들의 의도를 알아차리시고 어머니가 아닌 요한과 야고보에게 직접 말씀하시는 것입니다. “너희들이 너희가 구하는 것을 알지 못하는도다 내가 마시려는 잔을 너희가 마실 수 있느냐?” 여러분 이 잔이 어떤 잔입니까? 하나님의 진노의 잔입니다. 예수님께서 이 잔만은 피하게 해달라고 땀이 피와 같이 되도록 기도하셨던 잔이에요. 그러나 제자들은 그 잔이 출세의 잔이라고 생각했습니다. 권력의 잔이라고 생각했어요. 그것을 어떻게 알 수 있냐면 이 이야기를 들은 나머지 열명의 제자들이 이들에게 크게 화를 냅니다. 무슨 말입니까? 이들도 똑같이 생각했다는 거에요. ‘아니, 저 자리가 내 자리인데 니들이 선수를 쳐?’ 이거지요.

[2. The "Cup" of Ambition and the Indignation of the Ten]

At that moment, the mother of James and John comes to Jesus, kneels, and asks that her two sons be seated at His right and left hand. Although the mother made the request, Jesus speaks directly to James and John, saying, "You do not know what you are asking."

What does this mean? It suggests that while the mother was the one speaking, the request actually originated from James and John themselves. They used their mother as a proxy. We can confirm this because in the parallel account in Mark 10, the mother doesn't even appear—the brothers ask Jesus directly. Jesus immediately sees through their intention and addresses the brothers: "Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?"

What is this "cup"? It is the cup of God’s wrath. It is the cup Jesus prayed would pass from Him, as His sweat became like drops of blood. However, the disciples thought this was a "cup of success" or a "cup of power." We know they thought this because the other ten disciples became "greatly indignant" when they heard about it. Why were they angry? Because they were thinking the exact same thing! They were thinking, "Those spots were supposed to be mine! How dare you try to cut in line?"

                자, 예수님이 보시기에 얼마나 답답하셨을까요? 앞에서 분명히 당신의 수난과 부활을 말씀하셨는데 이들은 세상의 권력에 눈이 멀어있어요. 한 번 크게 꾸짖으실만도 한데 예수님께서는 이들을 꾸짖지 않으십니다. 오히려 이것을 가르침의 기회로 삼으세요. 이들의 높아지려고 하는 그 마음이 잘못되었다고 하지 않으시고 그 마음의 방향을 바꾸십니다. 그래서 그 향상심으로 세상의 본이 아니라 당신의 본을 따를 것을 가르치십니다. 25절, 예수님께서 제자들을 함께 불러 놓고 말씀하십니다. “너희들도 알다시피 이방 통치자들은 자기 백성들 위에 군림하고 그 고관들도 권력을 행사한다.” 무슨 말입니까? 이것이 너희들이 따르는 세상의 본이라는 말씀이지요. 지금껏 너희들이 추구해온 것이, 그리고 지금 너희들이 구하는 것이 바로 세상의 본이라는 것이에요. 그리고 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. 26절, “너희는 그렇게 해서는 안된다.” 그리고 하나님 나라의 방식에 대해서 다시 가르치십니다. “크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고,” 여기서 섬기는 자란 마치 집사처럼 주인을 섬기는 종을 말합니다. 27절, “으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 너희의 종이 되어야 하리라” 여기서 종이란 노예를 말합니다. 이는 고대사회에서 가장 낮은 위치의 사람이지요. 너희가 높아지려 한다면 종이 되어야 할진대 그 중에 최고가 되려면 노예처럼 그 중 가장 낮은 자되어라 라는 말씀인 것입니다. 이것이 바로 천국의 방식이며 예수님께서 우리에게 보여주신 예수님의 본인 것입니다. 28절이 그것을 말하고 있습니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라” 예수님께서는 이 말씀을 하시고 그 말씀을 끝내 이루심으로 우리에게 당신의 본이 무엇인지 직접 보여주셨습니다.

[3. The Redirection: From Gentile Rulers to the Kingdom Servant]

How frustrated Jesus must have felt! He had just spoken of His suffering and resurrection, yet they were blinded by worldly power. While He could have rebuked them harshly, Jesus instead uses this as a teaching moment. He doesn't say their desire to be great is inherently wrong, but He redirects the orientation of that desire. He teaches them that with that same ambition, they should follow His example, not the world’s.

In verse 25, Jesus calls them together and says, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them." He is saying, "This is the worldly example you have been following. What you are seeking right now is exactly how the world operates."

Then, in verse 26, He declares: "It shall not be so among you." He then re-teaches the way of the Kingdom: "But whoever would be great among you must be your servant." The word for "servant" here is diakonos, like a deacon serving a master. Then in verse 27: "And whoever would be first among you must be your slave." A "slave" (doulos) was the lowest possible position in ancient society. Jesus is saying, "If you want to be high, be a servant; but if you want to be the absolute highest, be the lowest of all—like a slave."

This is the way of Heaven and the very example Jesus set for us. Verse 28 says: "Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus didn't just say these words; He fulfilled them, showing us firsthand what His example looks like.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 예수님께서는 끊임없이 이들을 가르치셨습니다. 어린 아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 천국에서 큰 자다. 먼저 된 자가 나중 되고 나중 된 자가 먼저 되리라. 그러나 제자들은 좀처럼 세상의 본을 쫓는 것을 내려놓지 못하지요. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 세상에서 뿐만이 아니라 교회 안에서도 마찬가지지요. 좀 더 높은 자리 좀 더 드러나는 자리, 큰 자가 되고자 하는 우리의 열망은 식을 줄을 모릅니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 말씀하십니다. “너희는 그렇게 해서는 안된다, 너희는 그렇게 해서는 안된다.” 제자도란 섬기는 자가 되는 것입니다. 그리고 예수님께서 직접 당신의 목숨으로 우리에게 그 본을 보이셨습니다. 여러분 낮은 자가 되십시오. 그것이 천국의 방식입니다. 세상의 본이 아닌 예수님의 본을 따르시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion]

Jesus taught this principle relentlessly: "Whoever humbles himself like a child is the greatest," and "The first will be last, and the last will be first." Yet, the disciples struggled to let go of the world's patterns. We are no different. Whether in the world or inside the church, our hunger to be "big," to have a higher title, or to be in a more visible position never seems to fade.

But Jesus says, "It shall not be so among you, It shall not be so among you" Being His disciple means being a servant. He showed us that example personally by giving His own life. Brothers and sisters, be the lowly ones. That is the way of the Kingdom. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will follow the example of Jesus, not the example of the world.
