15:1 그 때에 바리새인과 서기관들이 예루살렘으로부터 예수께 나아와 이르되

15:2 당신의 제자들이 어찌하여 장로들의 전총을 범하나이까 떡 먹을 때에 손을 씻지 아니하나이다

1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”

15:3 대답하여 이르시되 너희는 어찌하여 너희의 전통으로 하나님의 계명을 범하느냐

15:4 하나님이 이르셨으되 네 부모를 공경하라 하시고 또 아버지나 어머니를 비방하는 자는 반드시 죽임을 당하리라 하셨거늘

15:5 너희는 이르되 누구든지 아버지에게나 어머니에게 말하기를 내가 드려 유익하게 할 것이 하나님께 드림이 되었다고 하기만 하면

15:6 그 부모를 공경할 것이 없다 하여 너희의 전통으로 하나님의 말씀을 폐하는도다

15:7 외식하는 자들아 이사야가 너희에 관하여 잘 예언하였도다 일렀으되

3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

15:8 이 백성이 입술로는 나를 공경하되 마음은 내게서 멀도다

15:9 사람의 계명으로 교훈을 삼아 가르치니 나를 헛되이 경배하는도다 하였느니라 하시고

8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,

    but their hearts are far from me.

9 They worship me in vain;

    their teachings are merely human rules.’”

15:10 무리를 불러 이르시되 듣고 깨달으라

15:11 입으로 들어가는 것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이 아니라 입에서 나오는 그것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이니라

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

15:12 이에 제자들이 나아와 가로되 바리새인들이 이 말씀을 듣고 걸림이 된 줄 아시나이까

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

15:13 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 심은 것마다 내 하늘 아버지께서 심으시지 않은 것은 뽑힐 것이니

15:14 그냥 두라 그들은 맹인이 되어 맹인을 인도하는 자로다 만일 맹인이 맹인을 인도하면 둘이 다 구덩이에 빠지리라 하시니

15:15 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 이 비유를 우리에게 설명하여 주옵소서

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[d] If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”

15:16 예수께서 이르시되 너희도 아직까지 깨달음이 없느냐

15:17 입으로 들어가는 모든 것은 배로 들어가서 뒤로 내버려지는 줄 알지 못하느냐

15:18 입에서 나오는 것들은 마음에서 나오나니 이것이야말로 사람을 더럽게 하느니라

15:19 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각과 살인과 간음과 음란과 도둑질과 거짓 증언과 비방이니

15:20 이런 것들이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이요 씻지 않은 손으로 먹는 것은 사람을 더럽게 하지 못하느니라

16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

                게네사렛에서 많은 병자들을 고치고 계시는 예수님께 예루살렘으로부터 바리새인과 서기관들이 나아와 묻습니다. 예수님의 제자들은 왜 장로들의 전통을 지키지 않느냐고요. 예수님은 이들의 질문에 이들이야말로 위선자들이라며 이들을 책망하십니다. 그리고 진정한 정결은 사람의 마음으로부터 시작되는 것임을 말씀하십니다. 오늘은 “외형이 아닌 내면에서 시작되는 참된 정결”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

While Jesus is healing many of the sick in Gennesaret, Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem approach Him with a question: "Why do your disciples not keep the tradition of the elders?" In response, Jesus rebukes them, calling them hypocrites. He explains that true purity begins in a person's heart. Today, I want to share a message titled “True Purity: Starting from the Inner Self, Not the Outward Appearance.”

                먼저 ‘장로들의 전통’이 무엇이기에 바리새인과 서기관들이 예루살렘에서부터 여기까지 와서 예수님께 따지는 것인지 한 번 알아보도록 하지요. 잘 아시다시피 유대인들은 나라가 망하고 포로생활을 오랜시간 거치면서 이방 문화에 강하게 노출이 되게 됩니다. 심지어 성전도 몇 번이나 무너져 지금 있는 성전은 세 번째 성전이지요. 이러다보니 이들은 자신들의 신앙의 순수성을 지키기 위해, 또 유대인이라는 정체성을 지키기위해 겉으로 드러나는 제의적 정결 의식에 더욱 집착하기 시작했습니다. 원래 구약에서는 제사장들만 성막에 들어가기 전에 씻도록 규정하고 있는데 이들은 이것을 일반화 시켜서 일상 생활에 적용을 하기 시작한 것이지요. 상황이 이렇다 보니 바리새인들의 관점에서 제자들은 손을 씻지 않았기 때문에 음식이 제의적으로 부정해지는 것입니다. 또, 부정한 음식을 먹었으니 제자들도 부정하게 된다는 것이지요.

First, let us look into what this "tradition of the elders" was, and why the Pharisees and scribes traveled all the way from Jerusalem to challenge Jesus about it. As you know, after enduring the fall of their nation and long years of exile, the Jewish people were heavily exposed to pagan cultures. Even their Temple had been destroyed several times—the one standing then was the third. Because of this, they became obsessed with outward ritual purity to preserve the purity of their faith and their identity as Jews.

Originally, the Old Testament only required priests to wash before entering the Tabernacle. However, they generalized this and began applying it to everyday life. From the perspective of the Pharisees, because the disciples did not wash their hands, the food became ritually "unclean." Furthermore, by eating unclean food, the disciples themselves became unclean.

                그러나 3절을 보니 예수님은 정확하게 이들의 전통과 하나님의 계명을 분리하십니다. 그리고 이들이 자신들의 전통으로 하나님의 계명을 어기는 예시를 드심으로서 이들의 위선을 만천하에 드러내시지요. 4-6절까지의 말씀이 바로 그 예입니다. 예를 들어 한 유대인이 자신의 재산을 하나님께 드린다고 법적인 맹세를 하면 그것을 성전에 등록하고 다른 용도로 사용 할 수가 없었지요. 자, 그러면 부모를 부양할 책임이 있는 사람이 이와 같은 맹세를 하면 그는 부모를 부양하고 싶어도 마치 그렇게 할 수 없는 것처럼 되어버리는 것입니다. 하지만 실제로는 부모가 죽고 난 뒤에 일정 금액을 지불하고 나면 그 재산을 되찾을 수 있었습니다. 꼼수지요. 말 그대로 장로들의 전통을 지킨다는 명목하에 하나님의 계명을 어기는 것입니다. 7절을 보면 예수님께서 대놓고 이들을 외식하는 자, 위선자라고 못박으십니다. 이사야서의 말씀을 인용하시며 이들이 하나님을 공경하는 듯한 외형을 갖추고 있지만 정작 그들의 내면은 전혀 그렇지 않음을 비판하시지요. 얼마나 신랄하게 말씀하셨는지 12절을 보니 제자들이 나아와 예수님께 물어봅니다. “바리새인들이 이 말씀을 듣고 빈정이 상한 것을 아십니까?” 라고 말이지요. 말씀이 너무 심하진 않으셨을까요? 걱정이 되는 것이지요. 그런데 예수님은 거기서 더 나아가십니다. 13절을 보니 예수님께서는 ‘내 하늘 아버지’라는 문구를 사용하심으로 바리새인들과 서기관들이 하나님 아버지께 속하지 않았다고 말씀하십니다. 그리고 그들을 그냥 내버려 두라고 말씀하십니다. 그들은 눈 먼 자들이라 결국 그들과 그들의 가르침을 따르는 사람들이 알아서 자멸하게 될 것이라는 것입니다. 그들이 왜 눈 먼 자들입니까? 먼저 그들은 자신들의 위선을 깨닫지 못하고 있습니다. 그들의 전통대로 아무리 정결 제의를 지킨다고 해도 마음이 부정한 그들은 결코 정결해 질 수 없습니다. 두번째, 그들은 구약의 하나님의 계명의 진짜 의미를 전혀 깨닫지 못하고 있습니다. 문제는 그런 그들이 자신들의 전통을 마치 하나님의 계명인 것처럼 가르칠 뿐만 아니라 오히려 진짜 하나님의 계명을 사람들로 하여금 어기게 하고 있다는 것입니다. 그래서 그들은 결국 뽑히게 될 것이며, 그들과 그 가르침을 따르는 사람들이 둘 다 구덩이에 빠지리라 말씀하시는 것이지요.

However, in verse 3, Jesus clearly distinguishes between their traditions and the commandments of God. He exposes their hypocrisy to the world by giving an example of how they break God’s commandments for the sake of their traditions.

Verses 4 through 6 provide that example. For instance, if a Jewish person made a legal vow to give their possessions to God (Corban), that property was registered to the Temple and could not be used for any other purpose. If someone responsible for supporting their parents made such a vow, they would act as if they could no longer help their parents, even if they wanted to. Yet, in reality, after the parents passed away, they could reclaim the property by paying a certain fee. It was a loophole—literally breaking God’s commandment under the pretext of keeping the "tradition of the elders."

In verse 7, Jesus explicitly labels them as "hypocrites." Quoting the prophet Isaiah, He criticizes them for having an outward appearance of honoring God while their hearts are far from Him. His words were so sharp that in verse 12, the disciples come to Him and ask, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?" They were worried that His words might have been too harsh.

But Jesus goes even further. In verse 13, by using the phrase "My heavenly Father," He implies that the Pharisees and scribes do not belong to God the Father. He tells the disciples to "leave them alone." He describes them as "blind guides," warning that they and those who follow their teachings will eventually ruin themselves.

Why are they blind?

1. They fail to recognize their own hypocrisy. No matter how many purity rituals they perform, they can never be pure if their hearts are unclean.

2. They fail to grasp the true meaning of God’s commandments in the Old Testament. The problem is that they not only teach their traditions as if they were God’s laws, but they actually cause people to break the real commandments of God. Therefore, Jesus says they will eventually be uprooted, and both the guides and the followers will fall into a pit.

                자, 그렇다면 예수님께서 말씀하시는 참된 정결은 무엇일까요? 베드로가 묻습니다. “예수님, 입으로 들어가는 것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이 아니라 입에서 나오는 그것이 사람을 더럽게 한다는 비유는 대체 무슨 뜻입니까?” 그러자 예수님께서 말씀해주시지요. 너희들이 말하는 장로들의 전통을 따르는 외형의 정결이 정결한 것이 아니다. 진짜 정결은 바로 마음으로부터 나오는 것이다. 마음이야 말로 사람의 핵심 부분으로서 마음이 정결하지 않으면 모든 악한 것이 마음으로부터 나와 사람을 부정하게 만드는 것이다. 그러면서 예를 드시는 것이 바로 19절의 말씀이지요. 그런데 19절에서 마음에서 나오는 것의 순서를 보면 조금 이상합니다. 악한 생각을 제외하고 악함의 강도를 보면 가장 악하다고 할 수 있는 살인부터 시작하여 가장 정도가 약하다고 할 수 있는 비방까지 이어지지요. 이 순서를 생각한다면 우리가 생각할 때에 가장 약하다고 생각할 수 있는, 남에게 직접적인 피해를 주지 않는 악한 생각을 왜 가장 앞에 놓으셨을까? 한 번 생각해볼만 합니다. 아마도 이 악한 생각이야말로 우리가 가장 악하다고 생각하는 살인보다 더 악한 것이 아닐까? 결국 모든 악한 행위는 바로 이 악한 생각, 악한 의도에서 나오기 때문이겠지요. 즉, 부정한 행위는 부정한 마음에서 나온다는 말씀을 그대로 표현하고 계신 것이 아닌가 싶습니다.

What, then, is the "true purity" that Jesus speaks of? Peter asks, "Explain this parable to us—how it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of it." Jesus explains that outward purity through tradition is not what matters. True purity comes from the heart. The heart is the core of a person; if the heart is not pure, every evil thing will flow from it and defile the person.

He gives examples in verse 19. If you look at the order of things coming out of the heart, it seems a bit strange. Excluding "evil thoughts," the list follows a descending order of intensity—starting with murder (the most severe) and ending with slander (the least severe). So why did He place "evil thoughts"—which we might consider the least harmful since they don't directly hurt others—at the very beginning?

It is worth considering that evil thoughts are perhaps more wicked than the act of murder itself. This is because every evil act originates from an evil thought or intention. Jesus is illustrating that "unclean actions come from an unclean heart."

                말씀을 맺습니다. 당시의 바리새인들과 서기관들은 지금으로 치면 지역 교회 목사들과 신학교 교수들입니다. 그런데 예수님께서는 이들이야말로 위선자이며 하나님이 심지않은 가라지이고 보지 못하는 자들을 구덩이로 인도하는 눈먼 자들이라고 신랄하게 비판하셨습니다. 교회라는 제도 안에서 우리야말로 외식하는 자들이 되는 것은 아닐까 두렵습니다. 지난 주일에 임은석 목사님께서 말씀하셨던 것과 같이 “본질에는 일치를, 비본질에는 자유를, 그리고 모든 것에 사랑을.” 우리가 비본질 적인 것에 집중하는 것이 아니라 정말 하나님이 원하시는 것에 집중하고 모든 것에 마음으로부터 사랑을 더하기 원합니다. 겉모양으로 하나님을 섬기는 자들이 아니라 마음으로 하나님을 섬기시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion

In those days, the Pharisees and scribes were the equivalent of today’s local pastors and seminary professors. Yet, Jesus harshly criticized them as hypocrites, weeds not planted by God, and blind guides leading others into a pit. It is a fearsome thought that we, within the institution of the church, might also become hypocrites.

As Pastor Lim Eun-seok said last Sunday: "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity (love)." I hope that we do not focus on non-essential, outward things, but rather on what God truly desires, adding love from our hearts to everything we do. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be people who serve God not with outward appearances, but with your whole hearts.
