Jesus Walks on the Water

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

14:25 밤 사경에 예수께서 바다 위로 걸어서 제자들에게 오시니

14:26 제자들이 그가 바다 위로 걸어오심을 보고 놀라 유령이라 하며 무서워하여 소리지르거늘

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

14:27 예수께서 즉시 이르시되 안심하라 나니 두려워하지 말라

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

14:28 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 주여 만일 주님이시거든 나를 명하사 물 위로 오라 하소서 하니

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

14:33 배에 있는 사람들이 예수께 절하며 이르되 진실로 하나님의 아들이로소이다 하더라

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

14:34 그들이 건너가 게네사렛 땅에 이르니

14:35 그 곳 사람들이 예수이신 줄을 알고 그 근방에 두루 통지하여 모든 병든 자를 예수께 데리고 와서

14:36 다만 예수의 옷자락에라도 손을 대게 하시기를 간구하니 손을 대는 자는 다 나음을 얻으니라

34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

            메시아가 누구신가를 보여주는 14장 말씀에서 이제 두번째와 세번째 기적을 보게 됩니다. 한편 어제 빈 들에서 떡을 먹었던 사건과 오늘 제자들이 바다를 건너는 사건은 각각 출애굽기에서 이스라엘 백성들이 모세를 따라 바다를 건너고 광야에서 만나를 먹었던 사건을 생각나게 하지요. 마태복음에서 그 모든 기적을 가능하게 하신 분은 예수님이십니다. 그리고 오늘 물 위를 걸으신 예수님의 이야기는 가장 어둡고 맞바람에 씨름하던 시간에 일어났던 기적이지요. 오늘은 “거센 바람이 아닌 예수님만 봅시다.”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

In Matthew chapter 14, which reveals the true identity of the Messiah, we now encounter the second and third miracles. On one hand, the miracle of the bread in the desolate place from yesterday and the event of the disciples crossing the sea today remind us of the Exodus—where the people of Israel crossed the sea and ate manna in the wilderness under Moses’ leadership. In the Gospel of Matthew, it is Jesus who makes all these miracles possible. Today’s story of Jesus walking on the water takes place during the darkest hour, while the disciples were struggling against a fierce headwind. I want to share a message today titled: "Look at Jesus, Not the Strong Wind."

            예수님께서는 이 외딴 곳에 계획 없이 오셨지요. 큰 무리가 예수님 앞에 있었기에 그들을 불쌍히 여기심으로 계획에 없던 사역을 하셨습니다. 하지만 그곳에 숙박을 할만한 마땅한 장소가 있거나 애초에 그런 계획이 없었기에 이들을 다 돌려보내셔야 했을 것입니다. 어쩌면 갈 길이 먼 이들을 위해 저녁을 먹이신게 아닌가 싶습니다. 어쨌든, 예수님께서는 제자들을 배에 태워 먼저 보내시고 당신께서 직접 무리를 다 돌려보내셨습니다. 그리고 원래 당신의 목적이셨던 기도를 하시러 홀로 산에 올라가십니다. 밤 늦게까지 혼자 기도를 하시지요.

            그런데 예수님께서 홀로 기도하시는 동안에 제자들은 갈릴리 호수 위에서 맞바람과 싸우고 있었습니다. 25절에 밤 사경에 예수님께서 제자들에게 오셨다고 하는데 밤 사경이 대략 새벽 3시에서 6시 정도이니 이들은 대략 9시간 정도를 맞바람과 씨름했다는 이야기가 됩니다. 지칠대로 지쳤을 것이고, 시간도 가장 어두울 때지요. 그래도 어부 출신들이 많아서인지 이들이 두려워 하였다는 이야기는 하고 있지 않습니다. 오히려 26절을 보니 예수님께서 바다 위로 걸어오심을 보고 놀라서 유령이라 하며 그 때 에서야 무서워하여 소리 질렀다고 전하고 있지요. 그런데 바로 그 때에 예수님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “용기를 내라. 나다. 두려워하지 말아라.” 이 말씀은 구약 시대에 하나님께서 그의 백성을 구원하러 나타내실 때에 자신을 알리시는 전형적인 표현이지요. 또한 물 위를 걸으시는 것은 예수님께서 하나님이심을 보여주시는 것이기도 합니다. 창세기 1:2에서 “하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시”지 않습니까? 욥기 9:8도 “그가 홀로 하늘을 펴시며 바다 물결을 밟으시며”라고 하나님을 표현하고 있습니다. 즉, 예수님이 하나님이시라는 것이지요.

Jesus came to this remote place without a specific plan. Because a large crowd gathered before Him, He moved out of compassion and performed a ministry that was not originally scheduled. However, since there was no suitable place to stay and no original plan for them to remain, He had to send them away. It seems He fed them dinner specifically for those who had a long journey ahead. Regardless, Jesus had His disciples get into the boat to go ahead of Him while He personally dismissed the crowd. Then, He went up on a mountain by Himself to pray, which was His original purpose. He stayed there alone, praying until late at night.

While Jesus was praying alone, however, the disciples were struggling against a headwind on the Sea of Galilee. Verse 25 tells us that Jesus came to them in the "fourth watch of the night." Since the fourth watch is roughly between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM, this means they had been wrestling with the wind for about nine hours. They must have been utterly exhausted, and it was the darkest time of the night. Perhaps because many of them were former fishermen, the text does not say they were afraid of the storm itself. Rather, verse 26 says that when they saw Jesus walking on the sea, they were terrified, thought He was a ghost, and cried out in fear.

But immediately, Jesus spoke to them: "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." (v. 27) This "It is I" is a classic expression used in the Old Testament when God revealed Himself to save His people. Furthermore, walking on the water demonstrates that Jesus is truly God. Does not Genesis 1:2 say, "the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters"? Job 9:8 also describes God as He who "alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea." In short, Jesus is God.

            바로 이 때, 베드로는 놀라운 믿음을 보여줍니다. 예수님의 말씀의 깊은 뜻을 그가 깨달았던 것일까요? 아니면 순간적으로 예수님에 대한 감정의 폭발이 믿음으로 이어졌던 것일까요? 그가 말합니다. “만일 주님이시거든 나를 명하사 물 위로 오라 하소서” 그의 용기와 믿음은 예수님을 주님으로 알아보는 안목을 갖게 합니다. 그리고 그는 예수님의 오라는 명령을 따라 배에서 내려 물 위로 걸어 예수님께로 가는 놀라운 기적을 체험하지요. 분명 그의 믿음은 진짜였을 것입니다. 그러나 30절을 보니 그가 거센 바람을 보고 무서워하였다고 전하고 있습니다. 예수님께서 그를 구출하시며 왜 의심하였느냐 라고 말씀하시지요. 여기서 의심하였다는 말은 마음이 둘로 나뉘어 흔들렸다는 말입니다. 베드로는 예수님의 말씀을 의지하여 물 위를 걸어 예수님께로 나아갔지만 그 나아가는 중에 거센 바람과 풍랑을 보고 그 마음이 나뉜 것입니다. 예수님만을 바라보아야 하는데 거센 바람을 보고 말았지요. 그러자 그의 마음에 두려움이 든 것입니다.

자 그런데 여기에 우리가 보아야 할 것이 몇가지 있습니다. 첫째로 그것은 우리가 베드로처럼 믿음의 길을 걷다가 현실의 바람과 풍랑을 보고 무서워서 물 속으로 빠져들어 갈 때, 바로 그때 우리가 해야 할 일입니다. 그것은 예수님께 소리질러 “주여 나를 구원하소서” 라고 요청하는 것입니다. 어쩌면 오늘 본문에서 베드로가 가장 잘 한 일이 이것 인지도 모릅니다. 그가 온전히 주님께 자신을 맡길 때에 예수님께서는 즉시 손을 내밀어 그를 붙잡아 주셨습니다. 그리고 말씀하신 말씀이 “믿음이 작은 자여 왜 의심하였느냐” 지요. 자 여기에 우리가 보아야 할 두번째, 바로 베드로는 실패한 상태에서 구원받았다는 것입니다. 베드로는 마음이 나뉘어 바람을 보았고, 두려워 하였고, 물 속으로 빠져들고 있었습니다. 예수님께서는 베드로에게 ‘믿음이 작은 자’라고 말씀하시지만 그를 구원하시고 그와 함께 배에 오르셨습니다. 베드로는 실패한 상태에서, 믿음이 작은 상태에서 구원을 받았던 것입니다. 이것이 우리에게 큰 위로가 됩니다. 그리고 베드로와 제자들이 예수님과 함께 할 때에, 그들은 바람이 잠잠해지는 안전을 누리게 됩니다. 아마도 이 경험은 제자들에게 지난번 풍랑 때를 기억하게 했을 것입니다. 그 때에 이들은 8:27에서 예수님이 대체 누구시기에 바람과 바다도 순종하는가 놀랍게 여겼었지요. 그러나 이제 그들은 예수님을 하나님의 아들이라고 고백하며 절하는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 그들의 믿음이 이 풍랑의 경험을 통해 더욱 더 굳건하여진 것입니다.

우리는 이러한 믿음의 예를 게네사렛의 사람들에게서도 볼 수 있습니다. 그들은 예수님을 알아보자마자 주변 온 지역에 소식을 전했습니다. 그리고는 모든 병든 자를 예수님께 데리고 오지요. 이들이 예수님의 옷자락이라도 만지게 해달라고 간청하였던 것은 예수님의 옷자락에 무슨 힘이 있다는 미신이 아닌 예수님을 향한 온전한 믿음이었습니다. 예수님의 충분한 능력에 대한 믿음이 있었기에 그들은 그 옷자락에 손을 대기만 해도 다 나음을 입었던 것입니다. 이들의 믿음이 이들이 처해있던 고통에서 이들을 완전히 해방한 것이지요.

At this moment, Peter shows remarkable faith. Did he grasp the deep meaning of Jesus' words? Or was it a sudden explosion of emotion toward Jesus that led to faith? He says, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." His courage and faith gave him the insight to recognize Jesus as Lord. Following Jesus’ command to "Come," he stepped out of the boat and experienced the incredible miracle of walking on the water toward Jesus. Surely, his faith was genuine.

However, verse 30 tells us that "when he saw the wind, he was afraid." As Jesus rescued him, He asked, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" The word "doubt" here implies that his heart was divided and wavering. Peter had relied on Jesus’ word to walk on the water, but while moving forward, he saw the strong wind and the waves, and his heart became divided. He should have looked only at Jesus, but he ended up looking at the fierce wind. Consequently, fear entered his heart.

There are a few things we must observe here. First, when we are walking the path of faith like Peter but become terrified by the winds and waves of reality and begin to sink, what we must do is cry out to Jesus: "Lord, save me!" Perhaps this was the best thing Peter did in today’s passage. When he completely entrusted himself to the Lord, Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him. Then He said, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"

This leads to the second point we must see: Peter was saved while in a state of failure. Peter’s heart was divided, he looked at the wind, he was afraid, and he was sinking. Even though Jesus called him one of "little faith," He saved him and climbed into the boat with him. Peter was saved in his failure, in his state of small faith. This gives us great comfort. And when Peter and the disciples were with Jesus, they enjoyed the safety of the wind dying down. This experience likely reminded them of the previous storm. Back in Matthew 8:27, they had wondered, "What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?" But now, we see them worshiping Him and confessing, "Truly you are the Son of God." Their faith was made even firmer through this experience of the storm.

We can also see an example of this faith in the people of Gennesaret. As soon as they recognized Jesus, they sent word throughout the surrounding region. They brought all who were sick to Him. Their plea to let the sick "only touch the fringe of his garment" was not a superstition about some power in the fabric, but an absolute faith in Jesus. Because they believed in Jesus’ sufficient power, everyone who touched the fringe was made well. Their faith completely liberated them from the suffering they were facing.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 말씀은 우리에게 현실과 예수님 사이에서 마음이 나누어지지 말라고 말하고 있습니다. 하지만 우리는 너무나 쉽게 현실에 흔들리고 두려워하지요. 그러나 그 때 우리가 해야 할 것은 바로 예수님께 소리 질러 “주여 나를 구원하소서” 외치는 것입니다. 예수님께서는 그 즉시 우리에게 손을 내밀어 주실 것입니다. 예수님만을 의지합시다. 거센 바람이 아닌 예수님만 봅시다. 우리의 작은 믿음이 더욱 더 견고해지게 해달라고 함께 기도하시겠습니다.

In conclusion, today’s word tells us not to let our hearts be divided between reality and Jesus. Yet, we so easily waver and become afraid of our circumstances. But in those moments, what we must do is cry out to Jesus: "Lord, save me!" Jesus will immediately reach out His hand to us. Let us rely only on Jesus. Let us look at Jesus, not the strong wind. Let us pray together that our small faith may become even more steadfast.
