5:1 예수께서 그리스도이심을 믿는 자마다 하나님께로부터 난 자니 또한 낳으신 이를 사랑하는 자마다 그에게서 난 자를 사랑하느니라

5:2 우리가 하나님을 사랑하고 그의 계명들을 지킬 때에 이로써 우리가 하나님의 자녀를 사랑하는 줄을 아느니라

5:3 하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이것이니 우리가 그의 계명들을 지키는 것이라 그의 계명들은 무거운 것이 아니로다

5:4 무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라

5:5 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자가 아니면 세상을 이기는 자가 누구냐

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

5:6 이는 물과 피로 임하신 이시니 곧 예수 그리스도시라 물로만 아니요 물과 피로 임하셨고 증언하는 이는 성령이시니 성령은 진리니라

5:7 증언하는 이가 셋이니

5:8 성령과 물과 피라 또한 이 셋은 합하여 하나이니라

5:9 만일 우리가 사람들의 증언을 받을진대 하나님의 증거는 더욱 크도다 하나님의 증거는 이것이니 그의 아들에 대하여 증언하신 것이라

5:10 하나님의 아들을 믿는 자는 자기 안에 증거가 있고 하나님을 믿지 아니하는 자는 하나님을 거짓말하는 자로 만드나니 이는 하나님께서 그 아들에 대하여 증언하신 증거를 믿지 아니하였음이라

5:11 또 증거는 이것이니 하나님이 우리에게 영생을 주신 것과 이 생명이 그의 아들 안에 있는 그것이라

5:12 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라

6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

유전자DNA의 비밀은 참으로 신기합니다. 교회에서 성도들을 보면 그 자녀가 엄마와 아빠를 얼마나 쏙 빼 닮았는지 모릅니다. 저희 가정만 해도 저는 잘 모르겠는데 보시는 분들마다 아이들이 저를 닮았다고 많이들 말씀 하십니다. 아이들이 성품, 식성, 생활습관까지도 부모를 닮는 것을 보면 참으로 신기합니다. 물론 같은 공간에서 생활하고 식사하기 때문에 후천적으로 생활 습관이 닮아가는 것은 자연스럽습니다. 하지만 선천적으로 가지고 태어나는 성향까지도 부모 중 하나를 닮는 것을 볼 때면 놀라울 뿐입니다. 아이들이 마음에 들지 않는 행동을 할 때 마다 부부는 서로 주장합니다. 당신을 닮았다고… 왜 그렇게 서로 우길까요? 부모 안에 있는 하나님의 성품 때문입니다. 악한 부모라도 아이들이 자신의 악한 모습을 닮는 것을 좋아하지 않습니다. 하물며 선하신 하나님 아버지의 우리를 향한 마음은 어떨까요? 내가 거룩하니 너희도 거룩할지어다(레 11:45)에 이미 모두 표현되어 있습니다. 하나님은 악이 없으신 선하신 분입니다. 당연히 자녀들이 아버지 하나님 모든 것을 닮기를 원하십니다.

The secret of DNA is truly marvelous. When I see the members of our congregation, it is amazing how much the children look exactly like their mothers and fathers. In my own family, I don't always see it myself, but everyone who meets us tells me how much my children resemble me. It is fascinating to see children inherit not just physical traits, but their parents' personalities, food preferences, and lifestyle habits. Of course, since we live and eat in the same space, it is natural to acquire certain habits over time. However, it is truly surprising to see even innate temperaments resemble one of the parents. Whenever children do something we don't like, my wife and I argue, claiming, "They take after you!" Why do we insist on this? It is because of the divine character of God within us. Even "wicked" human parents do not like seeing their children resemble their own flaws.

How much more, then, does our Good Heavenly Father feel toward us? His heart is fully expressed in Leviticus 11:45: "Be holy, because I am holy." God is good and devoid of evil. Naturally, He desires His children to resemble everything about Him, their Father.

세상을 이기는 믿음 (1~8절)

사도 요한은 예수께서 그리스도이심을 믿는 자마다 하나님께로부터 난 자(1a)라고 말합니다. 그리고 낳으신 이, 곧 아버지를 사랑하는 자는 그에게서 난 자, 곧 믿음의 형제자매를 사랑합니다. 만일 진짜 자녀라면 당연히 부모를 사랑하게 되어 있고, 정상적인 가정이라면 부모가 낳은 형제 자매가 서로 사랑하게 된다는 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님을 사랑하는 자는 당연히 형제 자매를 사랑합니다.

하나님을 사랑하는 것은 간단합니다. 그의 계명을 지키는 것입니다. 그리고 그 분이 우리에게 주신 계명은 결코 무거운 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 형제를 사랑하는 것이고, 형제 사랑은 사실 하나님을 사랑하면 자연스럽게 이루어집니다. 그래서 무거운 것이 아닙니다. 성도를 더 사랑하고 싶고, 믿음의 형제를 더 사랑하고 싶은 분은 예수님을 더 사랑하면 저절로 됩니다.

어제 말씀드린 카도스의 사랑입니다. 헬라어 카도스καθὼς는 ~처럼, ~같이 입니다. 예수님 같이, 예수님 처럼 사랑해야 한다는 것입니다. 먼저 예수님의 사랑을 듬뿍 받으면 정말 놀랍게도 주변이 다 사랑스럽게 느껴집니다. 그러면 좀 더 힘을 내어 상대방을 사랑하게 되고, 그것이 전혀 어렵게 느껴지지 않는 것입니다. 

요한은 이 개념을 영적인 전쟁의 개념으로 연결시킵니다. 요한은 세상과의 영적인 전쟁에서 하나님의 자녀들의 승리를 확신합니다. 요한은 5절에서 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자가 아니면 세상을 이기는 자가 누구냐! 라고 확신하며 크게 외칩니다. 하나님께로부터 난 자는 그 믿음으로 승리(4)를 얻는데, 그 믿음은 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 것(5)입니다. 그러니까 사랑도 영적 전쟁의 승리도 예수를 믿는 믿음으로 말미암아 가능한 것입니다.

Faith that Overcomes the World (vv. 1–8)

The Apostle John tells us that everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God (v. 1a). And whoever loves the Father also loves those born of Him—our brothers and sisters in faith. If one is a true child, they naturally love their parents; in a healthy family, siblings born of the same parents love one another. Therefore, those who love God naturally love their brothers and sisters.

Loving God is simple: it is keeping His commandments. And the commandments He has given us are not burdensome. His command is to love our brothers, and this love flows naturally if we first love God. That is why it is not a burden. If you wish to love the saints and your brothers in faith more, simply love Jesus more; the rest follows.

This is the "Kathos" (καθὼς) love I mentioned yesterday. The Greek word Kathos means "as" or "just as." We must love just as Jesus loved. When we are first filled with the love of Jesus, the world around us—surprisingly—begins to look lovely. Then, we find the strength to love others, and it doesn't feel difficult at all.

John links this concept to spiritual warfare. He is confident in the victory of God’s children over the world. In verse 5, he cries out with conviction: "Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God!" Those born of God gain victory through faith (v. 4), and that faith is believing Jesus is the Son of God (v. 5). Thus, both love and victory in spiritual warfare are possible only through faith in Jesus.

하나님의 아들이심을 믿는다는 것은 물과 피로 임하신 예수 그리스도를 믿는 다는 것(6)입니다. 여기서 물과 피는 과연 무엇을 의미할까요? 학자들의 다양한 주장들이 있습니다. 십자가에서 흘리신 물과 피Augustine, 세례와 성찬Luther, Calvin, 정결과 희생Plummer, 세례 요한에게 받은 물세례와 십자가의 대속의 보혈Tertullian, Stott이라는 견해들이 있습니다. 모든 견해가 일리가 있습니다. 하지만 가장 타당한 견해는 마지막 견해라고 생각합니다. 요한 공동체를 위협하던 당시에 케린투스Cerinthus와 같은 영지주의자들은 하늘에 있는 그리스도께서 요한의 물세례를 받을 때 예수에게 임하셨고, 십자가에 달리기 직전에 떠났다는 어이없는 주장으로 그리스도의 성육신을 부정했습니다.

요한은 이러한 영지주의의 주장에 대항하여 그리스도께서 육체를 입고 오셔서 세례를 받으시고, 십자가에서 피 흘리신 사실을 강력하게 주장하고 있는 것입니다. 결국 물과 피로 임하신 이 라는 표현은 쉽게 이해하면 성육신 하신 것을 의미하는 것입니다. 물로만 아니요 라는 것은 영지주의자들의 어이없는 주장인 가현설이 아니라, 실제로 피와 물을 쏟으신 육체를 입고 이 땅에 임하신 실제하시는 예수를 말하는 것입니다. 이러한 성육신을 확실하게 증언하는 이가 성령과 물과 피이고, 이 셋은 합하여 하나(7-8)입니다.

진리의 영이신 성령은 그리스도께서 세례를 받으실 때 비둘기처럼 임하셨고, 십자가를 지실 때 그것을 감당할 힘을 주셨습니다. 그러므로 성령, 물(세례), 피(십자가)는 곧 하나인 성령의 사역이었습니다.

Believing He is the Son of God means believing in Jesus Christ who came by "water and blood" (v. 6). What does "water and blood" mean? Scholars have various views:

• Augustine: The water and blood from His side on the Cross.

• Luther/Calvin: Baptism and Holy Communion.

• Plummer: Purification and Sacrifice.

• Tertullian/Stott: The water of His baptism by John and the blood of His atonement on the Cross.

While all have merit, I believe the last view is most accurate. During that time, Gnostics like Cerinthus threatened the Johannine community by claiming that the "Christ spirit" descended on Jesus at His baptism but left him before the crucifixion. They denied the Incarnation. John strongly refutes this, insisting that Christ came in the flesh, was baptized, and shed His blood. "Water and blood" signifies the Incarnation. He did not come "by water only" (a mere appearance), but as a real person who bled. The Holy Spirit, the water, and the blood testify to this, and these three are in agreement (vv. 7–8). The Spirit descended like a dove at His baptism and gave Him strength on the Cross. Thus, the Spirit, the Water (Baptism), and the Blood (Cross) were all one work of the Holy Spirit.

증인과 증거 (9~12절)

이스라엘 사람들은 재판을 할 때는 2명 이상의 증인의 증언을 채택합니다(신 19:15). 요한은 하나님께서 앞에 성령과 물과 피를 통해서 예수가 그리스도이심을 증언하고 있다고 말합니다. 그리고 이 모든 것은 성령 안에서 하나됩니다. 이처럼 예수 그리스도의 성육신은 진리의 영이신 하나님, 곧 성령이 증언(9)하는 것입니다. 신기한 것은 성령이 내주하는 자들은 내적인 증거가 있습니다. 곧 믿게 되는 것입니다. 이것은 진리의 영이신 성령의 사역입니다. 그러므로 예수를 믿는 자는 자기 안에 증거, 곧 성령이 있습니다. 동시에 예수를 믿지 않는 자는 하나님의 증언을 무시함으로 하나님을 거짓말쟁이로 만드는 죄악을 범하는 것(10)입니다.

하나님의 증언 외에 또 다른 증거는 아들 안에 있는 영생을 우리에게 주신 것입니다. 영생은 우리에게 주신 가장 귀한 선물입니다. 하지만 아직 완성된 것이 아닌 진행중인 것입니다. 그렇다면 영생을 어떻게 알고 확신할 수 있습니까? 그렇습니다. 바로 예수 그리스도가 그 증거가 되는 것입니다.

그러므로 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고, 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명 역시 없습니다(11, 12).

Witness and Evidence (vv. 9–12)

In Jewish law, the testimony of two or more witnesses is required (Deut. 19:15). John says God is testifying that Jesus is the Christ through the Spirit, the water, and the blood. Those in whom the Spirit dwells have this internal evidence; they simply come to believe. This is the work of the Spirit of Truth. Therefore, the believer has the testimony within himself. Conversely, those who do not believe make God out to be a liar by rejecting His testimony (v. 10).

Beyond this, God's evidence is the eternal life He has given us in His Son. Eternal life is our most precious gift—not yet fully realized, but currently in progress. How can we be sure of it? Jesus Christ Himself is the evidence. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life (vv. 11–12).

본문에 등장하는 증인이라는 헬라어 단어는 말튀스 μάρτυς 입니다. 그리고 이 단어에서 영어의 순교자martyr 가 나왔습니다. 왜내하면 초대교회의 증인들은 모두 자신이 보고 들은 것을 증거하기 위하여 증언하였고, 그 끝이 죽음이었기 때문입니다. 자신이 보고 들은 것을 증언하는 증인의 삶은 순교입니다.

예수님도 아버지를 증거하기 위한 증인으로 이 땅에 오셨고, 결국 순교자가 되었습니다.

이것이 증인의 삶입니다.

그런데 기독교의 놀라운 비밀은 이러한 삶의 방식으로 세상을 이긴다는 것입니다.

나는 진정한 증인입니까? 나는 진정한 승리자입니까?

땅 끝까지 이르러 예수님의 증인이 되어, 승리하는 성도요, 우리 공동체 되기를 바랍니다.

The Greek word for "witness" used here is martys (μάρτυς), from which the English word "martyr" is derived. This is because the witnesses of the early church testified to what they saw and heard, even when it led to their deaths. To live as a witness is to live a life of martyrdom. Jesus also came to this earth as a witness to the Father and ultimately became a martyr. This is the life of a witness.

The amazing secret of Christianity is that we overcome the world through this very way of life.

• Am I a true witness?

• Am I a true victor?

May we all become saints and a community that overcomes the world by being witnesses of Jesus to the ends of the earth.
