God’s Love and Ours

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

4:13 그의 성령을 우리에게 주시므로 우리가 그 안에 거하고 그가 우리 안에 거하시는 줄을 아느니라

4:14 아버지가 아들을 세상의 구주로 보내신 것을 우리가 보았고 또 증언하노니

4:15 누구든지 예수를 하나님의 아들이라 시인하면 하나님이 그의 안에 거하시고 그도 하나님 안에 거하느니라

4:16 하나님이 우리를 사랑하시는 사랑을 우리가 알고 믿었노니 하나님은 사랑이시라 사랑 안에 거하는 자는 하나님 안에 거하고 하나님도 그의 안에 거하시느니라

4:17 이로써 사랑이 우리에게 온전히 이루어진 것은 우리로 심판 날에 담대함을 가지게 하려 함이니 주께서 그러하심과 같이 우리도 이 세상에서 그러하니라

4:18 사랑 안에 두려움이 없고 온전한 사랑이 두려움을 내쫓나니 두려움에는 형벌이 있음이라 두려워하는 자는 사랑 안에서 온전히 이루지 못하였느니라

13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

4:19 우리가 사랑함은 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨음이라

4:20 누구든지 하나님을 사랑하노라 하고 그 형제를 미워하면 이는 거짓말하는 자니 보는 바 그 형제를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 보지 못하는 바 하나님을 사랑할 수 없느니라

4:21 우리가 이 계명을 주께 받았나니 하나님을 사랑하는 자는 또한 그 형제를 사랑할지니라

19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

제가 한국에 있을 때 결혼하기 전 섬겼던 교회는 고 옥한흠 목사님이 시무하신 사랑의 교회입니다. 강남역 뒷골목에 위치한 예전 사랑의교회 예배당은 1985년 서울특별시 건축상 은상을 수상한 아름다운 건축물입니다. 주택가와 향락가의 경계에 위치한 이유로 본당을 지하로 넣었습니다. 강단 정면에는 하나님은 사랑이시라는 성경 구절이 아주 큼지막하게 부조Relief 형태로 붙어 있었습니다. 당시 옥함흠 목사님의 목회 철학이 그대로 반영된 것이었습니다. 사실 사랑은 기독교의 가장 대표적인 철학입니다.

Before I was married and while I was living in Korea, I served at Sarang Church (Church of Love), where the late Pastor Oak Han-humm ministered. The old sanctuary located in the back alleys of Gangnam Station was a beautiful structure that won the Silver Prize at the Seoul Architecture Awards in 1985. Because it was located on the boundary between a residential area and an entertainment district, the main chapel was built underground. On the front of the pulpit, the biblical phrase "God is Love" was displayed in very large relief letters. This was a direct reflection of Pastor Oak’s pastoral philosophy at the time. In truth, love is the most representative philosophy of Christianity.

먼저 사랑하신 하나님 (7~10절)

오늘 본문에서 가장 많이 등장하는 단어가 무엇인지 금방 알 것입니다. 사랑이나 그와 연관된 단어가 15구절 가운데 최소 27번이나 등장합니다. 이 부분의 주제, 아니 요한일서 자체의 주제는 너무도 분명합니다. 사랑입니다. 사랑하는 자들아 우리가 서로 사랑하자(7a) 이것이 요한의 주장입니다.

세상과는 구별되고 하나님께 속했다고 말하는 성도는 반드시 서로 사랑해야 합니다. 사랑은 하나님께 속했고, 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문(7, 8)입니다. 요한 사도는 하나님은 빛이시라(요일 1:5)와 더불어 하나님은 사랑이시라(8, 16)고 하나님의 속성을 명제적으로 정의합니다. 왜, 하나님은 사랑일까요?

그것은 온 우주의 창조주이신 하나님이 오히려 우리 인간을 먼저 찾아오시고 사랑했기 때문입니다(10). 또한 우리를 사랑하사 우리 죄를 속하고, 우리를 살리기 위하여 그 아들을 화목제물로 보내셨습니다. 그러므로 하나님은 사랑 그 자체인 것입니다.

사도는 우리가 사랑함은 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨음이라(19)고 말합니다. 우리의 사랑의 근거, 근원은 결국 하나님으로부터 기인합니다. 그러므로 엄밀한 의미에서 하나님을 알지 못하는 사람은 사랑을 모르는 것입니다. 사랑을 모르는 자는 하나님을 알 수 없는 것입니다. 진정한 사랑은 10절에 기록되어 있습니다.  

사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사

우리 죄를 속하기 위하여 화목제물로 그 아들을 보내셨음이라(10)

사랑은 여기 있으니, 곧 이것이 진정한 사랑이다 라는 것입니다. 하나님은 사랑이신데, 그저 관념적이고 형이상학적인 사랑이 아닌, 실제로 육신을 입고 이 땅에 나타나신 바 된 그것이 바로 진정한 사랑이라는 것입니다. 바울은 이러한 사랑에 대해 다음과 같이 말합니다.

우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로

하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라 (롬 5:8)

1. God Who Loved Us First (v. 7–10)

You will quickly notice which word appears most frequently in today's text. "Love" or related words appear at least 27 times in these 15 verses. The theme of this section—and indeed the theme of 1 John itself—is unmistakably clear: Love. "Dear friends, let us love one another" (v. 7a). This is John’s core argument. Saints who claim to be set apart from the world and belong to God must love one another. This is because love comes from God, and God is love (v. 7, 8). Along with the definition "God is light" (1 John 1:5), Apostle John defines God’s essence propositionally as "God is love" (v. 8, 16).

Why is God love? It is because God, the Creator of the entire universe, sought us out and loved us humans first (v. 10). Furthermore, He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice to atone for our sins and give us life. Therefore, God is love itself.

The Apostle says, "We love because he first loved us" (v. 19). The basis and source of our love ultimately originate from God. Strictly speaking, therefore, those who do not know God do not know love. Those who do not know love cannot know God. True love is described in verse 10:

"This is love" means "this is what true love looks like." God is love, and this isn't just a conceptual or metaphysical love; true love is that which was actually manifested on this earth in the flesh. Paul speaks of this love as follows:

그러므로 서로 사랑하라 (11~16절)

하나님이 먼저하신 사랑입니다. 그래서 하나님을 믿는 성도 역시 실제적인 사랑의 행위가 있어야 합니다.  그러므로 성도는 서로 사랑하는 것이 너무 마땅한 것(11)입니다.

우리가 서로 사랑해야 하는 또 다른 이유는 우리가 서로 사랑할 때 세상은 보이지 않는 하나님을 우리를 통해서 볼 수 있기 때문(12)입니다.

서로 사랑하는 것은 하나님이 우리 안에 거하시게 하는 방법이고, 그의 사랑이 우리 안에서 온전히 이루어지게 하는 유일한 방법입니다.

예수 그리스도의 중요한 사명은 보이지 않는 하나님을 보여주는 것이었습니다. 그리고 그 놀랍고 신비로운 사명이 우리들에게 전수되었습니다. 어떻게 우리가 보이지 않는 하나님을 사람들에게 보일 수 있을까요?

그 비결이 바로 서로 사랑하는 것입니다(12). 하지만 말이 쉽지 실제로 그 사랑을 실천하는 것은 결코 만만한 일이 아닙니다.

톰 라이트 교수에게 어떤 성도가 찾아와 교회 생활에서 겪은 다양한 경험을 우울하게 말하면서, 교회 입구에는 위험이라는 표지판을 걸어야 한다고 말했다고 합니다. 교회에 오면 심술궂고 남의 말 하기 좋아하고 헐뜯는 대화나 행동을 접할 수도 있으니 경고해야 한다는 것입니다.

불완전한 죄인들의 공동체에서 서로 사랑하여 보이지 않는 하나님을 세상에 보여주는 신비로운 일이 과연 일어날 수 있을까요? 그렇습니다. 그것은 하나님이 우리에게 주신 성령의 은혜로 이루어집니다(13). 그래서 성령충만을 구해야 하고, 예수 충만해야 하며, 말씀 충만해야 합니다.

2. Therefore, Love One Another (v. 11–16)

Because God’s love came first, believers who trust in God must also perform practical acts of love. Therefore, it is only natural for believers to love one another (v. 11).

Another reason we must love one another is that when we do, the world can see the invisible God through us (v. 12). Loving one another is the way to let God live in us and the only way for His love to be made complete in us.

A vital mission of Jesus Christ was to show us the invisible God. That wonderful and mysterious mission has now been passed down to us. How can we show the invisible God to people? The secret is to love one another (v. 12).

However, this is easier said than done. Practicing that love is no easy task. A member once visited Professor N.T. Wright and, speaking gloomily about their various experiences in church life, suggested that a "DANGER" sign should be hung at the church entrance. They argued people should be warned because, upon entering a church, they might encounter mean-spiritedness, gossip, and backbiting.

Can the mysterious work of showing the invisible God to the world through love actually happen in a community of imperfect sinners? Yes. It happens through the grace of the Holy Spirit given to us (v. 13). That is why we must seek to be filled with the Spirit, filled with Jesus, and filled with the Word.

온전한 사랑 (17~21절)

서로 사랑해야 하는 세 번째 이유는 우리가 심판 날에 하나님 앞에 담대함을 가지기 위함(17) 입니다. 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 먼저 사랑했는지를 알고, 그렇기 때문에 형제를 진심으로 사랑하는 자는 마지막 심판의 날이 결코 두렵지 않습니다.

온전한 사랑, 곧 아들을 보내신 아버지의 사랑과 그 사랑을 믿는 믿음으로 형제를 사랑하는 행함과 진실함의 사랑이 심판의 두려움을 내어 쫓기 때문입니다. 범죄한 아담과 하와는 하나님을 두려워하여 숨었습니다. 하지만 하나님은 그들을 위하여 가죽옷을 지어 입혀 그들의 두려움과 수치를 가려 주셨습니다.

가죽옷을 지어 주시기 위해서는 반드시 어떤 짐승이 대신 죽어야 했습니다. 바로 하나님의 어린양입니다.

우리는 나의 두려움과 수치를 가리기 위해 대신 죽은 어린양의 가죽을 붙잡고 한없이 눈물 흘려야 합니다. 그리고는 나도 그 사랑을 본받아 형제, 자매를 사랑해야 합니다. 이것이 우리 기독교의 핵심 교리입니다.

3. Perfect Love (v. 17–21)

The third reason we must love one another is so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment (v. 17). Those who know how God first loved them and who sincerely love their brothers and sisters because of it do not fear the final day of judgment.

This is because perfect love—the Father's love in sending His Son, and the love expressed in action and truth by those who believe in that love—drives out the fear of judgment. When Adam and Eve sinned, they hid because they were afraid of God. However, God made garments of skin for them to cover their fear and shame.

For those garments of skin to be made, an animal had to die in their place. This points to the Lamb of God. We should weep endless tears as we hold onto the "skin" of the Lamb who died to cover our fear and shame. Then, imitating that love, we must love our brothers and sisters. This is the core doctrine of Christianity.

그러므로 어찌 우리가 형제, 자매를 사랑하지 않을 수 있겠습니까? 우리의 감정, 상황은 다 치워버립시다.  

양심과 의지를 발휘하여 누구든지 사랑하는 하나님의 진정한 자녀가 됩시다! 교회가 위대한 업적을 이루고, 온갖 능력을 발휘하고, 온 백성을 구제하며, 복음을 땅 끝까지 전한다고 해도 사랑을 잃으면 다 잃어버린 것과 같습니다. 바울은 사랑이 없으면 내가 아무것도 아니고, 내게 아무런 유익이 없다고 고백했습니다.

사랑은 우리 기독교의 전부입니다. 톰 라이트 교수를 찾아왔던 그 성도의 말처럼, 어쩌면 우리 교회 대문에도, 우리 가정에도 푯말을 붙여야 할지 모르겠습니다. 개조심이 아닌 사람 조심… 좀 더 사랑하고 싶은데 잘 안 됩니다. 어떤 비결이 없을까요? 제 경험상 딱 한가지 방법 밖에는 없습니다. 그 형제나 자매를 사랑하려고 하지 말고, 오히려 예수님, 하나님을 더 사랑하려고 노력해야 합니다. 그렇게 기도해야 합니다. 그렇게 고백해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다. 예수님을 사랑하면, 자연스럽게 이웃을 사랑하게 됩니다. 진정으로 예수님을 사랑한다면 말입니다.

오늘 이 새벽에 예수님께 진심으로 사랑한다고 고백했으면 좋겠습니다.

그 사랑이 흘러 옆에 있는 형제 자매에게 까지 넘칠 것을 믿습니다.  

Therefore, how can we not love our brothers and sisters? Let us set aside our emotions and circumstances. Let us exercise our conscience and will to become true children of God who love everyone!

Even if a church achieves great feats, displays all kinds of power, provides relief to all people, and spreads the gospel to the ends of the earth—if it loses love, it has lost everything. Paul confessed that without love, he is nothing and gains nothing. Love is the "everything" of our Christianity.

Perhaps, as the person who visited Professor Wright suggested, we need signs on our church gates or our front doors. Not "Beware of Dog," but "Beware of People"... We want to love more, but it’s difficult. Is there a secret? In my experience, there is only one way: Do not try to love that brother or sister directly; instead, strive to love Jesus and God more. Pray that way. Confess that way. Because God is love, when you love Jesus, you will naturally come to love your neighbor—if you truly love Jesus. I hope that this morning, we can sincerely confess our love to Him. I believe that love will flow out and overflow to the brothers and sisters beside us.
