9:1 전에 고통 받던 자들에게는 흑암이 없으리로다 옛적에는 여호와께서 스불론 땅과 납달리 땅이 멸시를 당하게 하셨더니 후에는 해변 길과 요단 저쪽 이방의 갈릴리를 영화롭게 하셨느니라

1 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

9:2 흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보고 사망의 그늘진 땅에 거주하던 자에게 빛이 비치도다

9:3 주께서 이 나라를 창성하게 하시며 그 즐거움을 더하게 하셨으므로 추수하는 즐거움과 탈취물을 나눌 때의 즐거움 같이 그들이 주 앞에서 즐거워하오니

9:4 이는 그들이 무겁게 멘 멍에와 그들의 어깨의 채찍과 그 압제자의 막대기를 꺾으시되 미디안의 날과 같이 하셨음이니이다

9:5 어지러이 싸우는 군인들의 신과 피 묻은 겉옷이 불에 섶 같이 살라지리니

9:6 이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고 한 아들을 우리에게 주신 바 되었는데 그의 어깨에는 정사를 메었고 그의 이름은 기묘자라, 모사라, 전능하신 하나님이라, 영존하시는 아버지라, 평강의 왕이라 할 것임이라

9:7 그 정사와 평강의 더함이 무궁하며 또 다윗의 왕좌와 그의 나라를 굳게 세우고 지금 이후로 영원히 정의와 공의로 그것을 보존하실 것이라 만군의 여호와의 열심이 이를 이루시리라

2 The people walking in darkness

    have seen a great light;

on those living in the land of deep darkness

    a light has dawned.

3 You have enlarged the nation

    and increased their joy;

they rejoice before you

    as people rejoice at the harvest,

as warriors rejoice

    when dividing the plunder.

4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,

    you have shattered

the yoke that burdens them,

    the bar across their shoulders,

    the rod of their oppressor.

5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle

    and every garment rolled in blood

will be destined for burning,

    will be fuel for the fire.

6 For to us a child is born,

    to us a son is given,

    and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the greatness of his government and peace

    there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne

    and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it

    with justice and righteousness

    from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty

    will accomplish this.

                  오늘의 본문은 구약성경에서 가장 유명한 메시아 예언 중에 하나입니다. 이사야서에서 오늘의 본문 바로 이전까지만 해도 유다 왕국의 멸망을 예언하고 있었습니다. 그런데 오늘, 마치 흑암에 빛이 비취듯 메시아를 통해 이들에게 새로운 빛을 주실 것을 약속하십니다. 그 약속이 바로 구유에 아기로 이 땅에 오신 예수님이시지요. 오늘은 “이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Today’s text contains one of the most famous Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. Up until the verses immediately preceding this passage, Isaiah had been prophesying the fall of the Kingdom of Judah. However, today, just as light pierces through the darkness, God promises a new light through the Messiah. That promise is Jesus Christ, who came to this earth as a baby in a manger.

Today, I want to share a message titled: "For Unto Us a Child Is Born."

                  첫번째 큰 빛이 비칠 것입니다. 1절의 시작이 이렇습니다. “전에 고통받던 자들에게는 흑암이 없으리로다.” 무슨 말입니까? 이들이 고통받는 것은 바로 이들이 흑암 가운데 행하기 때문이라는 것입니다. 2절을 한 번 같이 읽어보겠습니다. “흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보고 사망의 그늘진 땅에 거주하던 자에게 빛이 비치도다” 이 얼마나 놀라운 말씀입니까? 분명 본문 말씀 앞의 이사야서에서는 유다왕 아하스가 불순종함으로 이들은 어둠으로 들어가고 결국 멸망의 예언까지 들어야 했습니다. 그러나 인간의 왕은 실패했을지 몰라도, 하나님께서는 새로운 왕, 큰 빛 되시는 메시아를 통해 진정한 구원을 이루시겠다고 약속하시는 것입니다. 이 빛은 어떤 빛입니까? 우리에게 기쁨을 주는 빛입니다. 3절은 즐거움이라는 말이 한 절에 네 번이나 반복해서 나옵니다. 그 중 탈취물을 나눌 때의 즐거움이란 뛰면서 격정적으로 표현하는 환희를 가르킵니다. 서로 다른 즐거움의 강도와 종류가 어우러져 이 빛이 우리에게 얼마나 큰 기쁨을 주시는 것인지 보여주고 계시는 것입니다. 4-5절은 멍에와 채찍과 막대기를 어떻게 하신다구요? 주께서 꺾으신다고 하십니다. 불에 섶같이 순식간에 살라질 것이라고 하십니다. 모든 압제와 억압, 전쟁으로부터 단번에 해방시키실 것입니다. 이 모든 일이 이루어지는 계기가 무엇입니까?

[Point 1: A Great Light Will Shine]

Verse 1 begins like this: "Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress." What does this mean? It means that their suffering was a result of walking in thick darkness. Let’s read verse 2 together:

"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

What an amazing word! Previously in Isaiah, we saw King Ahaz of Judah fall into darkness through his disobedience, leading to the prophecy of destruction. However, though human kings may fail, God promises to achieve true salvation through a new King—the Messiah, who is the Great Light.

What kind of light is this? It is a light that brings us joy. In verse 3, words for "rejoicing" or "gladness" appear four times in a single verse. One of these, "rejoicing as warriors divide the plunder," refers to a passionate, leaping kind of ecstasy. By weaving together these different intensities and types of joy, God is showing us how immense the joy this Light brings truly is.

How does He deal with the yoke, the whip, and the rod in verses 4 and 5? The Lord shatters them. He says they will be burned as fuel for the fire. He will liberate us from all oppression, tyranny, and war in a single stroke. And what is the catalyst for all these events?

                  그것은 바로 두번째, 우리에게 한 아기가 났기 때문입니다. 6절, “이는 한 아기가 우리에게 났고.” “이는.” 앞에서 얘기했던 큰 빛이 흑암의 백성들에게 비취는 것. 우리에게 모든 다양한 기쁨과 즐거움을 누리게 하시는 것. 억압받고 고통 받던 자들이 단번에 해방되는 것, 그 모든 것은 바로 우리에게 한 아기가 났기 때문입니다. 우리에게 났습니다. “한 아들을 ‘우리에게’ 주신 바 되었는데” 라고 반복해서 말씀하시지 않습니까? 그렇다면 이 아기, 이 아들은 어떤 분입니까? 신적인 기묘함과 인간적인 조언자, 인간적인 용사와 신적인 하나님, 신적인 영원하심과 인간적인 아버지, 신적인 평안함과 인간적인 통치자. 우리가 익히 알고 있는 이 메시아에 대한 네가지 칭호는 모두 신성과 인성이 이 아기에게 공존함을 보여주고 있습니다. 앞에서 모든 인간 왕들은 실패했지만 우리에게 나실 한 아기는 인간 왕들과는 달리 그 주권과 평강이 끝없을 것이며 영원한 정의와 공의로 그분의 나라를 세우실 것입니다. 하나님의 열심, 그 끓어오르는 질투가 반드시 그 일을 이루실 것입니다.

[Point 2: For Unto Us a Child Is Born]

The second point is that it happens because a Child is born to us. Verse 6 begins with "For" (or "Because"): "For to us a child is born."

The reason the Great Light shines on the people in darkness, the reason we can enjoy such diverse and overflowing joy, and the reason the oppressed are suddenly liberated—is all because a Child is born to us. He was born to us. The text emphasizes this by repeating, "to us a son is given."

Then, who is this Child, this Son? He is the Wonderful Counselor (divine mystery and human guidance), the Mighty God (human warrior and divine Elohim), the Everlasting Father (divine eternity and human fatherhood), and the Prince of Peace (divine peace and human ruler). These four titles for the Messiah show that both divinity and humanity coexist in this Child.

While all previous human kings failed, the Child born to us will have a sovereignty and peace that never ends. He will establish His kingdom with eternal justice and righteousness. And how will this be accomplished? The zeal of the Lord of Hosts—His burning, passionate jealousy—will surely perform this.

This Child is Jesus Christ. The Jesus who came as a baby in a stable in Bethlehem. Because this Child was born to us, we have been reborn from children of sin and death into children of light.

그분이 바로 예수 그리스도 이십니다. 베들레헴 어느 마굿간에 아기로 오신 예수님. 우리에게 이 아기가 나심으로 우리는 죄와 사망의 자녀에서 빛의 자녀로 거듭나게 되었습니다. 이 놀라운 일을 행하신 하나님의 열심을 찬양합시다. 오늘도 왕되신 예수님께 우리의 삶을 내어드립시다. 그분의 영원한 나라 안에 참 평강을 누리시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 

[Conclusion]

Let us praise the zeal of God, who has performed this marvelous work. Today, let us surrender our lives to Jesus, our King. I pray that you will experience true and lasting peace within His eternal kingdom. Amen.
