21:1 그때에 레위 사람의 족장들이 제사장 엘르아살과 눈의 아들 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손의 지파 족장들에게 나아와

21:2 가나안 땅 실로에서 그들에게 말하여 이르되 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하사 우리가 거주할 성읍들과 우리 가축을 위해 그 목초지들을 우리에게 주라 하셨나이다 하매

21:3 이스라엘 자손이 여호와의 명령을 따라 자기의 기업에서 이 성읍들과 그 목초지들을 레위 사람에게 주니라

Towns for the Levites

1 Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel 2 at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, “The Lord commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.” 3 So, as the Lord had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

21:4 그핫 가족을 위하여 제비를 뽑았는데 레위 사람 중 제사장 아론의 자손들은 유다 지파와 시므온 지파와 베냐민 지파 중에서 제비 뽑은 대로 열세 성읍을 받았고

21:5 그핫 자손들 중에 남은 자는 에브라임 지파의 가족과 단 지파와 므낫세 반 지파 중에서 제비 뽑은 대로 열 성읍을 받았으며

4 The first lot came out for the Kohathites, according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin. 5 The rest of Kohath’s descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh.

21:6 게르손 자손들은 잇사갈 지파의 가족들과 아셀 지파와 납달리 지파와 바산에 있는 므낫세 반 지파 중에서 제비 뽑은 대로 열 세 성읍을 받았더라

6 The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

21:7 므라리 자손들은 그 가족대로 르우벤 지파와 갓 지파와 스불론 지파 중에서 열두 성읍을  받았더라

7 The descendants of Merari, according to their clans, received twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.

                본문은 레위 자손들이 자신들의 기업을 받는 장면을 다루고 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 여호수아서에서 벌써 몇차례나 레위 족속이 받을 유업이 없다는 말씀을 들었었지요. 그렇다면 이들이 요구하는 기업이란 무엇이며 그것은 무슨 의미를 갖는지 한번 살펴보면 좋겠습니다. 오늘은 이들의 요구를 통해 “서로를 섬기기 원하시는 하나님의 뜻” 이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Today’s passage describes the Levites receiving their inheritance. However, we have already heard several times throughout the Book of Joshua that the tribe of Levi was to have no inheritance among the other tribes. So, what is this inheritance they are requesting, and what does it signify?

Through their request, I would like to share a message titled: "God’s Will for Mutual Service."

                첫번째, 약속을 지키시는 하나님의 뜻이었습니다. 1절에서 말하고 있는 “그때에” 와 2절의 “가나안 땅 실로에서” 라는 말씀은 이 일이 19:51에서 땅 분배를 마치던 바로 그때에 일어난 일임을 알게 해줍니다. 또한 에브라임의 땅 실로가 아니라 가나안 땅 실로라는 굳이 표현한 것은 이들이 이미 하나님께서 약속하신 가나안 땅에 들어와 있으니 다른 지파들에게 유업이 주어졌듯이 하나님께서 레위에게 약속하신 성읍들도 이들에게 주어져야 함을 뒷받침하는 것이지요. 민수기 35:1-8은 하나님께서 비록 레위에게 농업을 위한 큰 땅을 유업으로 주시지는 않았지만 대신 이들이 거처할 수 있는 성읍들과 가축을 기를 수 있는 목초지를 약속하시는 것을 분명히 말하고 있습니다. 또한 2절, “여호와께서 모세에게 명령하사… 주라 하셨나이다.” 3절, “여호와의 명령을 따라” 4-6절에는 “제비 뽑은대로”라는 말을 반복함으로 이 모든 일의 시작과 그것의 성취가 약속을 지키시는 하나님의 뜻대로 이루진 것임을 보여주고 있지요. 그렇다면 그 뜻은 무엇일까요?

[Point 1: The Will of a Promise-Keeping God]

First, this was about the will of God, who faithfully keeps His promises. The phrases "at that time" (v. 1) and "at Shiloh in Canaan" (v. 2) indicate that this event took place exactly when the land distribution ended (as seen in 19:51).

The specific mention of "Shiloh in the land of Canaan"—rather than just saying Shiloh—underscores that since they were now standing in the very land God had promised, the specific towns promised to the Levites must now be given, just as inheritances were given to the other tribes. Numbers 35:1-8 clearly states that while God did not give the Levites vast territories for agriculture, He did promise them towns to live in and pasturelands for their livestock.

By repeating phrases like "The Lord commanded through Moses" (v. 2), "at the Lord’s command" (v. 3), and "as the lot fell to them" (vv. 4-6), the text emphasizes that the beginning and fulfillment of this task were carried out according to the will of a faithful God. So, what was the purpose of this will?

                두번째, 레위지파로 하나님의 백성을 섬기게 하셨습니다. 4-6절은 레위지파에게 주어진 48성읍에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 가만히 보면 이들은 이스라엘 전역에 흩어져 살게 되지요. 그렇다면 그들의 역할이 무엇이기에 이렇게 흩으셨던 것일까요? 말라기 2:5-6은 레위의 입에 진리의 법이 있고 많은 사람을 돌이켜 죄악에서 떠나게 하였다라고 말하고 있습니다. 이들은 하나님을 예배하는 제사장으로서의 역할과 그들을 도우며 사람들에게 하나님의 말씀을 가르치는 사역을 담당하였던 것입니다. 우리는 그 예를 구약의 여러 부분에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 즉 이들은 하나님의 백성을 섬겨 그들로 하나님께 온전히 예배하게하고 하나님의 말씀을 배우게하는 역할을 하였던 것입니다. 자 그렇다면 이들의 섬김을 받는 공동체는 어떻게 하여야 할까요?

[Point 2: Serving God’s People through the Tribe of Levi]

Verses 4-6 describe the 48 towns given to the Levites. If you look closely, you’ll see they were scattered throughout the entire land of Israel. Why did God scatter them like this?

Malachi 2:5-6 tells us that the "law of truth" was in Levi’s mouth and that he turned many from sin. The Levites served as priests who oversaw worship and as teachers who instructed the people in God’s Word. We see examples of this throughout the Old Testament. Their role was to serve God’s people, ensuring they could worship Him fully and learn His statutes.

Then, how should the community receiving this service respond?

                세번째, 믿음의 공동체 또한 레위지파를 섬기게 하셨습니다. 무엇으로요? 그들의 유업으로. 3절을 함께 읽겠습니다. “이스라엘 자손이 여호와의 명령을 따라 자기의 기업에서 이 성읍들과 그 목초지들을 레위 사람에게 주니라” 하나님께서는 레위 사람들에게 새로운 성읍들을 주시지 않으셨습니다. 공동체로 하여금 그들의 기업에서 그들의 것을 떼어 주셨습니다. 이는 첫째로, 이들의 기업은 이들의 힘으로 얻은 것이 아닌 하나님께로부터 온 것 임을 상기시키십니다. 즉 자신의 것을 내어준 것이 아니라 하나님께서 약속하신 것을 나누는 것입니다. 둘째로 그렇게 하나님만이 유업인 레위 지파를 섬김으로 레위지파 뿐만이 아니라 이스라엘의 모든 지파의 기업이 여호와께 속한다는 것을 선포하는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님께서 뜻하신 레위지파와 나머지 지파가 서로를 섬기는 이유인 것입니다. 바로 우리 모두가 하나님께 속한 것임을 드러내는 것이지요.

[Point 3: The Faith Community Serving the Tribe of Levi]

God also ordained that the faith community serve the tribe of Levi. And they were to do so out of their own inheritance. Let’s read verse 3 together:

"So, as the Lord had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites these towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance."

Notice that God did not create new towns for the Levites. Instead, He commanded the community to take a portion of what they had already received and give it to them.

This serves two purposes:

1. A Reminder of Source: It reminds the tribes that their inheritance was not gained by their own strength but was a gift from God. They weren't giving away their own property; they were sharing what God had entrusted to them.

2. A Declaration of Sovereignty: By serving the Levites—whose only true inheritance was the Lord—all the tribes were declaring that their own land also ultimately belonged to Jehovah.

This is the beautiful cycle of mutual service God intended. The Levites and the other tribes served one another to reveal one truth: that we all belong to God.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘은 레위지파의 성읍 분배를 통해 서로를 섬기기를 원하시는 하나님의 뜻에 대해서 말씀을 나누었습니다. 예배를 주관하고 말씀을 가르치는 이들이 공동체를 섬기고 공동체 또한 이들을 하나님께 받은 유업으로 섬김으로서 우리는 우리 모두가 하나님의 소유이며 백성임을 드러낼 수 있습니다. 이 뜻은 하나님의 명령이었습니다. 그 명령에 온전히 순종하는 저와 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion]

Today, through the distribution of towns to the Levites, we have looked at God’s will for us to serve one another.

When those who lead worship and teach the Word serve the community, and when the community, in turn, serves them with the blessings they have received from God, we demonstrate to the world that we are God’s possession and His people. This was not a suggestion; it was God’s command.

I pray that we all may fully obey this command of mutual service and live as a people who truly belong to the Lord.
