4:1 내게 말하던 천사가 다시 와서 나를 깨우니 마치 자는 사람이 잠에서 깨어난 것 같더라

4:2 그가 내게 묻되 네가 무엇을 보느냐 내가 대답하되 내가 보니 순금 등잔대가 있는데 그 위에는 기름 그릇이 있고 또 그 기름 그릇 위에 일곱 등잔이 있으며 그 기름 그릇 위에 있는 등잔을 위해서 일곱 관이 있고

4:3 그 등잔대 곁에 두 감람나무가 있는데 하나는 그 기름 그릇 오른쪽에 있고 하나는 그 왼쪽에 있나이다 하고

1 Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep. 2 He asked me, “What do you see?”

I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps. 3 Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

4:4 내게 말하는 천사에게 물어 이르되 내 주여 이것들이 무엇이니이까 하니

4 I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”

4:5 내게 말하는 천사가 대답하여 이르되 네가 이것들이 무엇인지 알지 못하느냐 내가 대답하되 내 주여 내가 알지 못하나이다 하니

5 He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I replied.

4:6 그가 내게 대답하여 이르되 여호와께서 스룹바벨에게 하신 말씀이 이러하니라 만군의 여호와께서 말씀하시되 이는 힘으로 되지 아니하며 능력으로 되지 아니하고 오직 나의 영으로 되느니라

6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.

4:7 큰 산아 네가 무엇이냐 네가 스룹바벨 앞에서 평지가 되리라 그가 머릿돌을 내놓을 때에 무리가 외치기를 은총, 은총이 그에게 있을지어다 하리라 하셨고

7 “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”

4:8 여호와의 말씀이 또 내게 임하여 이르시되

4:9 스룹바벨의 손이 이 성전의 기초를 놓았은즉 그의 손이 또한 그것을 마치리라 하셨나니 만군의 여호와께서 나를 너희에게 보내신 줄을 네가 알리라 하셨느니라

8 Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9 “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.

4:10 작은 일의 날이라고 멸시하는 자가 누구냐 사람들이 스룹바벨의 손에 다림줄이 있음을 보고 기뻐하리라 이 일곱은 온 세상에 두루 다니는 여호와의 눈이라 하니라

10 “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”

4:11 내가 그에게 물어 이르되 등잔대 좌우의 두 감람나무는 무슨 뜻이니이까 하고

11 Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?”

4:12 다시 그에게 물어 이르되 금 기름을 흘리는 두 금관 옆에 있는 이 감람나무 두 가지는 무슨 뜻이니이까 하니

12 Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”

4:13 그가 내게 대답하여 이르되 네가 이것이 무엇인지 알지 못하느냐 내가 대답하되 내 주여 알지 못하나이다 하니

13 He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I said.

4:14 이르되 이는 기름 부음 받은 자 둘이니 온 세상의 주 앞에 서 있는 자니라 하더라

14 So he said, “These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.”

아이유라는 가수 아시죠? 정말 유명하고 노래 잘하는 가수인데요. 이 가수야 워낙 오랫동안 활동했기에 다양한 영상과 유명한 일화들이 많이 있겠죠. 그 중에 한 영상이 있습니다. 2015년에 찍힌 영상인데요. 아이유가 공항에 이제 해외 활동을하고 돌어왔나봅니다. 무빙워크에 타 있었는데, 이제 많은 팬들이 반대쪽 위층에서 그 아이유를 내려다보며 영상을 찍고 있었습니다. 많은 팬들이 아이유가 보이니까 너무 반갑고 기쁜 마음에 막 손을 흔들었나봐요. 그러자 아이유도 그런 팬들을 보며 기쁘게 손을 흔들어주는 영상입니다. 이게 왜 유명해졌냐 하면 그 아이유 바로 뒤쪽에 서 있던 다른 한 외국인 무리들이 자기들에게 손을 흔들어주는 줄 알고 굉장히 즐겁게 같이 손을 흔들어줘요. ‘이야 한국이라는 나라는 모든 사람들에게 이렇게 환대적이구나’라고 생각했을지도 모릅니다. 착각한거죠. 그래서 그 모습이 웃기니까 유명해진 영상입니다. 이렇게 아이유를 위한 환호와 찬양을 다른 사람이 착각해도 웃기고 민망한데, 하나님의 일을 하는 우리들이 하나님의 영광을 갈취해서 마치 내가 한 일인 마냥 착각하면 얼마나 우습고 민망할까요? 오늘 본문은 스가랴가 본 다섯 번째 환상과 그와 관련된 하나님의 메시지를 담고 있습니다. 무엇보다도 스룹바벨에 관한 하나님의 말씀이 스가랴에게 임합니다. 6절을 우리말 성경으로 읽어보면, “네 힘으로도 안 되고 네 능력으로도 안되고 오직 내 영으로만 된다”고 말씀하십니다. 결국 인간의 힘이 아닌 오롯이 하나님의 힘으로 모든 것을 완성하십니다. 이처럼 지금 현재까지도 하나님은 우리를 사용하셔서 역사하십니다. 하나님의 힘을 의지하여 사역을 감당하는 자들이 경험할 수 있는 승리의 결과를 함께 살펴보길 원합니다.

You all know the singer IU, right? She’s a very famous and talented singer who has been active for a long time, so there are many videos and well-known stories about her. Among them, there’s one video from 2015. IU had just returned from overseas activities and was at the airport. She was riding on a moving walkway, and many fans on the upper floor across from her were watching and recording her. When they saw IU, they were so excited and happy that they began waving enthusiastically. IU saw them and cheerfully waved back.

The video became famous because of what happened next — right behind IU, there was a group of foreigners who thought IU was waving at them, and they happily waved back too! They might have thought, “Wow, Korea is such a welcoming country—everyone is so friendly here.” But of course, it was a misunderstanding. It’s funny and a little embarrassing.

Now, if even such a misunderstanding between people can seem amusing and awkward, how much more foolish and shameful would it be if we, who serve in God’s ministry, take God’s glory for ourselves and act as if we accomplished His work?

Today’s passage is Zechariah’s fifth vision and the message God gave through it. It contains a word specifically for Zerubbabel. In verse 6, God says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,” declares the LORD Almighty. In the end, it is not by human strength, but entirely by the power of God that all things are accomplished. In the same way, even today, God continues to work through us. Let’s look together at the victorious results experienced by those who depend on God’s strength in ministry.

1)    등잔대

스가랴를 잠에서 깨운 천사를 통해 스가랴는 눈 앞에 보이는 환상에 대한 해석을 듣게 됩니다. 그의 눈 앞에는 한 순금 등잔대가 있습니다. 2절을 보면 이 등잔대는 큰 기름 그릇을 바치고 있으며, 또 그 기름 그릇 위에 일곱 등잔이 있다고 나옵니다. 그리고 이 일곱 등잔에 기름이 일곱 관을 통해 공급됩니다. 이 기름이 어디에서 오는 것일까요? 바로 양 옆에 서 있는 감람나무에서부터 옵니다. 12절에 스가랴 선지자가 천사에게 감람나무에 대해 물을 때 이렇게 표현했습니다. “금기름을 흘리는 두 금관 옆에 있는 이 감람나무 두 가지.” 그러니 이 등잔들은 사람이 직접 기름을 공급하지 않아도 옆에 있는 감람나무들에 의해 기름이 공급되어 계속해서 빛을 낼 수 있었습니다. 즉 이 등잔대는 사람이 아닌 하나님이 공급하심으로 기능한다고 볼 수 있습니다. 천사가 직접적으로 우리에게 등잔대가 상징하는 바를 말해주지는 않습니다. 오히려 이것이 무엇인지 묻는 스가랴에게 “이것들이 무엇인지 모르느냐?”며 되물어 보십니다 (5). 결국 6절에 대답해 주시는데 그것도 딱히 시원스러운 대답은 아닙니다. 오히려 딴소리를 하는 듯합니다. 우리는 이 환상이 성전의 재건에 대한 메시지를 담고 있는 점, 그리고 등잔대가 모세의 성막과 솔로몬의 성전에서 사용된 점을 고려할 때, 스가랴가 본 등잔대는 성전을 상징하는 것으로 볼 수 있습니다. 즉 당시 유다 공동체는 듣고 깨달아야 했습니다. ‘아 이 성전 재건 사역은 우리 인간의 힘으로 하는 것이 아니라 오직 하나님의 힘으로 이루어지리라’는 것을요.

1) The Lampstand

Through the angel who woke Zechariah from his sleep, he is shown a vision and its meaning. Before him is a golden lampstand. Verse 2 says that the lampstand has a large bowl on top and seven lamps, each supplied with oil through seven channels. Where does this oil come from? It flows from the two olive trees standing on either side. In verse 12, when Zechariah asks the angel about the olive trees, he says, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”

So these lamps did not need human effort to refill them — they continually burned because oil was supplied directly from the olive trees. In other words, this lampstand functioned not by human effort but by God’s provision.

The angel doesn’t immediately explain what the lampstand symbolizes. Instead, when Zechariah asks, “What are these?” the angel replies, “Do you not know what these are?” (v.5). Only in verse 6 does he respond — and even then, not with a straightforward answer.

However, given that this vision concerns the rebuilding of the temple, and that lampstands were used in Moses’ tabernacle and Solomon’s temple, it’s clear that this lampstand symbolizes the temple itself. The message to the people of Judah was clear:

2)    두 감람나무

이번엔 11절과 12절에 스가랴가 천사에게 이 두 감람나무가 무슨 뜻인지 두 번이나 연속으로 묻습니다. 여러모로 천사에게 답을 듣기가 쉽지가 않습니다. 앞에서처럼 다시 한번 스가랴의 모르겠다는 대답이 있자 천사가 말해줍니다. 이러한 장면은 우리에게 스가랴가 받은 계시의 성격을 보여줍니다. 그가 받은 계시는 인간의 직관이나 지식으로는 이해할 수 없으며 하나님의 도우심 없이는 올바르게 해석 될 수 없음을 알 수 있습니다. 14절에 “이것들은 온 세상을 다스리는 여호와를 섬기는 기름 부음 받은 두 사람이다”라고 알려줍니다. 여기서 기름 부음 받은 두 사람은 대제사장 여호수아와 유다의 정치 지도자 스룹바벨로 해석합니다. 스가랴의 환상에서 이들은 등잔대에 기름을 공급하는 자들로 묘사됩니다. 결국 ‘기름 부음을 받아 온 세상의 주를 섬기는 두 사람’ 또한 친히 하나님이 공급자 되심을 알려줍니다. 그러므로 이들은 하나님이 그들의 공급자되심을 믿고 의지하며 맡기신 사명을 담대히 감당해야 했습니다.

2) The Two Olive Trees

In verses 11–12, Zechariah twice asks what the two olive trees mean. Again, the answer does not come easily. This interaction shows us something about divine revelation: what Zechariah saw could not be understood by human intellect or reasoning alone — only with God’s help could it be rightly interpreted.

In verse 14, the angel finally explains:

These two anointed ones are understood to represent Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the governor, the spiritual and political leaders of Judah. In Zechariah’s vision, they are the ones who supply oil to the lampstand — meaning they serve God through His divine empowerment. Ultimately, even these “anointed ones” are not self-sufficient; their strength and calling come directly from God, who is their source and sustainer.

Therefore, they were to carry out their God-given mission boldly, fully trusting in His supply and power.

하나님은 스가랴에게 스룹바벨에 대한 예언을 하십니다. 7, 9, 10절의 말씀을 통해 그때 유다백성들처럼 현재 하나님의 사역을 하는 자들로서 하나님의 승리하심을 확신 할 약속의 말씀을 살펴봅시다.

첫째, 그 어떤 장애물이나 어려움도 하나님 사역을 막을 수 없습니다. 7절에 나온 ‘큰 산’은 성전 재건과 유다 회복의 과정에서 마주하게 될 거대한 장애물들을 상징합니다. 사실상 여러 어려움에 직면해 있었던 것은 사실입니다. 그러나 하나님은 당신의 영이 그들과 함께하시기에, 그들 앞에 놓인 어떤 장애물이라도 그들의 사명을 막을 수 없을 것이라고 약속하십니다.

둘째, 하나님이 시작하신 일은 꼭 마치실 겁니다. 9절에 스룹바벨을 통해 성전의 기초를 놓았고 그의 손으로 일을 마침으로 이 모든 일을 하신 이가 여호와임을 알게 될 것입니다. “너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라” (빌 1:6). 그리고 약속대로 성전 재건은 B.C. 516년에 완성됩니다.

셋째, 하나님 일에 작은 일은 없습니다. 스룹바벨 성전은 솔로몬의 첫 성전에 비하면 작고 초라했습니다. 그러나 ‘하나님의 영’이 역사하셔서 여러 어려움과 반대를 뚫고 완공된다면 그 자체가 하나님의 역사임을 드러내는 증거가 됩니다.

우리 모두 하나님의 사역을 감당할 때 겸손한 청지기의 마음으로 하나님의 일을 오직 하나님의 능력과 공급하심으로 해낼 수 있기를 함께 기도하기를 원합니다. 그럴 때 큰 일이든 작은 일이든 우리를 통해 역사하신 하나님의 능력을 보고 많은 사람들이 기쁨의 찬양을 하나님께 올려드릴 줄로 믿습니다.

Now, through verses 7, 9, and 10, God gives prophecies concerning Zerubbabel that assure both him and all who serve in God’s work of His ultimate victory. Let’s reflect on these promises.

First, no obstacle or hardship can stop God’s work.In verse 7, the “great mountain” represents the enormous challenges that stood in the way of rebuilding the temple and restoring Judah. Indeed, the people faced many difficulties. But God promised that, because His Spirit was with them, no obstacle could prevent them from fulfilling their mission.

Second, whatever God begins, He will surely finish.Verse 9 declares that Zerubbabel, who laid the foundation of the temple, will also complete it — and the people will know that it was the LORD who accomplished it. As Philippians 1:6 says:

And as God promised, the temple was indeed completed in 516 B.C.

Third, in God’s work, there is no such thing as a “small” task.Zerubbabel’s temple may have seemed humble compared to Solomon’s grand temple, but its completion—despite opposition and difficulty—proved that God’s Spirit was at work. The very fact that it stood was itself a testimony to God’s power.

When we serve in God’s ministry, may we do so with the heart of humble stewards, relying solely on God’s power and provision. Then, whether the work seems great or small, others will witness the power of God working through us and give joyful praise to Him.

“Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the LORD Almighty.
