3:1 대제사장 여호수아는 여호와의 천사 앞에 섰고 사탄은 그의 오른쪽에 서서 그를 대적하는 것을 여호와께서 내게 보이시니라

1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. 2 The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”


3:3 여호수아가 더러운 옷을 입고 천사 앞에 서 있는지라

3:4 여호와께서 자기 앞에 선 자들에게 명령하사 그 더러운 옷을 벗기라 하시고 또 여호수아에게 이르시되 내가 네 죄악을 제거하여 버렸으니 네게 아름다운 옷을 입히리라 하시기로

3 Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. 4 The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”


Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”


3:5 내가 말하되 정결한 관을 그의 머리에 씌우소서 하매 곧 정결한 관을 그 머리에 씌우며 옷을 입히고 여호와의 천사는 곁에 섰더라

5 Then I said, “Put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him, while the angel of the Lord stood by.


3:6 여호와의 천사가 여호수아에게 증언하여 이르되

3:7 만군의 여호와의 말씀에 네가 만일 내 도를 행하며 내 규례를 지키면 네가 내 집을 다스릴 것이요 내 뜰을 지킬 것이며 내가 또 너로 여기 섰는 자들 가운데에 왕래하게 하리라

6 The angel of the Lord gave this charge to Joshua: 7 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here.


3:8 대제사장 여호수아야 너와 네 앞에 앉은 네 동료들은 내 말을 들을 것이니라 이들은 예표의 사람들이라 내가 내 종 싹을 나게 하리라

3:9 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 내가 너 여호수아 앞에 세운 돌을 보라 한 돌에 일곱 눈이 있느니라 내가 거기에 새길 것을 새기며 이 땅의 죄악을 하루에 제거하리라

8 “‘Listen, High Priest Joshua, you and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch. 9 See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.


3:10 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 그 날에 너희가 각각 포도나무와 무화과나무 아래로 서로 초대하리라 하셨느니라

10 “‘In that day each of you will invite your neighbor to sit under your vine and fig tree,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”



                어제 우리는 하나님이 그 처소에서 일어나실 때, 하나님이 움직이실 때 어떤 일이 일어나는지 함께 나누었습니다. 측량줄을 잡은 천사의 환상으로 하나님께서 예루살렘을 놀랍게 회복시키시고 그들을 보호하시며 그들 가운데 영광으로 임재하실 것에 대해 예언하시는 말씀이었지요. 그러나 이것은 황폐해진 옛 도성을 마주하고 있었던 유다에게만 전하시는 말씀이 아니었습니다. 사실 이 말씀은 ‘그날,’ 즉, 많은 나라가 하나님께 속하여 하나님의 백성이 되는 그 날이 올 것임을 알리시는 놀라운 메시아에 대한 예언이었던 것입니다. 오늘의 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 오늘의 말씀은 유다의 대제사장 여호수아로 대표되는 유다의 영적 회복에 대한 말씀입니다. 그러나 이 영적 회복은 유다에만 그치는 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 이는 하나의 예표로서 이를 통하여 그 너머에 있는 하나님의 종, 메시야의 소망을 갖게 하려 하십니다. 오늘 우리는 이 본문을 통하여 “하나님의 은혜로 입는 새 옷과 영원한 소망”에 대해서 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.


                Introduction: From the City to the Savior

Yesterday, we discussed what happens when God arises from His dwelling place, when God moves. The vision of the angel with the measuring line foretold God's miraculous restoration and protection of Jerusalem, promising His glorious presence among His people. However, this was not just a word for Judah, facing their desolate old city. In fact, this message was a remarkable Messianic prophecy, announcing the coming of “that day”—the day when many nations would belong to God and become His people.

Today’s message is similar. It speaks of the spiritual restoration of Judah, represented by the High Priest Joshua (Yeshua). But this spiritual renewal doesn't end with Judah. Rather, it serves as a type or a symbol, through which God seeks to give us hope in the Servant to come, the Messiah. Today, we want to look at this text and share a message on “A New Garment by God’s Grace and Our Eternal Hope.”

                자 먼저, 은혜로 입는 새 옷, 유다의 현재적인 회복에 대해서 함께 말씀을 나누겠습니다. 오늘 본문 말씀은 스가랴의 네번째 환상, 하나님의 법정에 선 대제사장 여호수아의 환상을 말씀하고 계십니다. 1절 한번 함께 읽겠습니다. “대제사장 여호수아는 여호와의 천사 앞에 섰고 사탄은 그의 오른쪽에 서서 그를 대적하는 것을 여호와께서 내게 보이시니라” 스가랴가 눈을 들어보니 대제사장 여호수아가 하나님의 법정에 피고인으로 섰습니다. 3절을 보니 그의 행색을 표현하는데 더러운 옷을 입고 천사 옆에 서있다고 합니다. 여기서 더럽다고 하는 말은 그 어근이 대변을 가르키는 말로서 온갖 오물에 뒤덮여 있는 정도의 더러움을 말하는 것입니다. 이는 실로 충격적이지요. 사탄은 그 오른쪽에 서서 그를 대적하는데 이는 그를 고소한다는 말입니다. 마치 검사가 피고인의 죄목을 낱낱이 고발하듯, 사탄이 이스라엘을 대표하는 여호수아의 더러운 옷을 율법적으로 정확히 지적하며 낱낱이 고발하고 있습니다. 여러분께서 배심원으로 이 재판에 참여하셨다면 죄악의 증거물을 입고 있는 여호수아를 죄 없다 할 수 있겠습니까? 그런데 여기서 놀라운 일이 일어납니다. 2절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 사탄아 여호와께서 너를 책망하노라 예루살렘을 택한 여호와께서 너를 책망하노라 이는 불에서 꺼낸 그슬린 나무가 아니냐 하실 때에” 재판관 되시는 하나님께서 여호수아의 죄를 묻지 않으시고 대신 사탄을 책망하십니다. 두번이나 반복해서 책망하시는 모습을 통해 우리는 하나님께서 그를 엄하게 꾸짖고 계심을 알 수 있습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 의문이 생깁니다. 우리 눈에 보아도 여호수아의 죄악이 명백한데 어떻게 하나님께서는 여호수아가 아니라 사탄을 이렇게 엄하게 책망하실 수 있는가? 그 근거가 무엇인가? 2절 말씀은 그 근거를 이 단 한 줄로 설명합니다. “예루살렘을 택한 여호와께서” 무슨 말입니까? 하나님께서 여호수아가 아니라 사탄을 책망하신 것은 여호수아의 행위 때문이 아니라 전적인 하나님의 선택과 은혜 때문이라는 것입니다. 실제로 이 말씀을 하시고 계시는 3절에서 여호수아가 더러운 옷을 입고 있다고 말하고 있지 않습니까? 너무나 극명한 대비의 순간입니다. 하나님께서 그 죄를 묻지 않으시고 오히려 고발하시는 자를 책망하시는데 정작 피고인은 죄의 증거물인 오물이 뒤집힌 옷을 그대로 입고 법정에 서있습니다. 그 때에 하나님께서 그의 더러운 옷을 벗기고 아름다운 옷을 입히라고 하십니다. 4절 함께 읽겠습니다. “여호와께서 자기 앞에 선 자들에게 명령하사 그 더러운 옷을 벗기라 하시고 또 여호수아에게 이르시되 내가 네 죄악을 제거하여 버렸으니 네게 아름다운 옷을 입히리라 하시기로”  이는 그저 옷을 갈아입히시는 것이 아닙니다. 그의 죄악을 제거하시고 그의 정결함과 권위를 회복시켜 주신다는 의미입니다. 이런 하나님의 무조건적인 은혜를 입은 여호수아에게 하나님께서는 사명을 주십니다. 그것이 7절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “만군의 여호와의 말씀에 네가 만일 내 도를 행하며 내 규례를 지키면 네가 내 집을 다스릴 것이요 내 뜰을 지킬 것이며 내가 또 너로 여기 섰는 자들 가운데에 왕래하게 하리라” 이는 회복된 자의 사명입니다. 또한 이는 하나님의 도를 행하며 규례를 지키는 것이 구원의 조건이 아니라 하나님의 전적인 선택과 은혜로 이루어지는 것임을 말하고 있는 것이지요. 그러므로 사명은 그렇게 구원받은 백성이 마땅히 행해야 할 특권이며 청지기 직분임을 말하고 있는 것입니다. 자 그런데 이 모습이 너무나 익숙하지 않습니까? 분명 하나님께서는 대제사장 여호수아를 통해 유다의 영적인 회복에 대해서 말씀하고 계십니다. 그러나 우리는 이것이 단지 유다의 회복에만 그치는 것이 아니라는 것을 알지요. 왜냐하면 이 말씀이 궁극적인 소망, 메시야를 예표하고 있기 때문입니다.


I. A New Garment by Grace: Joshua’s Immediate Restoration

First, let's look at the immediate restoration of Judah—the new garment received by grace. Our passage today describes Zechariah’s fourth vision: Joshua, the High Priest, standing in God’s courtroom. Let’s read verse 1 together:

“Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.” (Zech. 3:1, ESV)

Zechariah sees the High Priest Joshua standing as the defendant in God's court. In verse 3, his condition is described: he was “clothed with filthy garments” as he stood before the Angel. The Hebrew root for "filthy" literally refers to excrement, suggesting a profound level of dirt and impurity—covered in moral and spiritual filth. It's a shocking image!

Satan stands at his right hand to accuse him, acting like a prosecutor, meticulously pointing out Joshua’s dirty clothes—the evidence of his sin—in accordance with the Law. If you were on the jury, could you declare Joshua, wearing the evidence of his guilt, "Not Guilty"?

Yet, here is where the astonishing event occurs. Let’s read verse 2 together:

“And the Lord said to Satan, ‘The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?’”

God, the Judge, does not question Joshua's sin. Instead, He rebukes Satan—twice! This severe reprimand makes us wonder: When Joshua's guilt is so clear even to our eyes, how can God sternly rebuke the accuser instead of the accused? What is the basis for this?

Verse 2 explains the reason in one simple phrase: “The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem.”

What does this mean? God’s rebuke of Satan, rather than Joshua, is not based on Joshua’s deeds, but on God’s sovereign choice and unconditional grace. Notice that verse 3 still states that Joshua was standing there in filthy garments even after this declaration! This is a stark contrast: God overlooks the sin and rebukes the accuser, while the defendant stands there wearing the evidence of his moral pollution.

It is at that moment that God commands that his dirty clothes be removed and a new garment be put on him. Let’s read verse 4:

“And the Angel of the Lord said to those who were standing before him, ‘Remove the filthy garments from him.’ And to him he said, ‘Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes and put a clean turban on your head.’”

This is more than a simple change of clothes. It signifies the removal of his guilt (iniquity) and the restoration of his purity and priestly authority.

Joshua, having received this unbelievable grace, is then given a commission. That is verse 7:

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you access among those who are standing here.’”

This is the mission of the restored. This shows us that obedience is not the condition for salvation; rather, salvation is achieved solely by God's choice and grace, and the mission is a privilege and stewardship that the saved people are now expected to fulfill.

Doesn't this image feel familiar? While God is clearly addressing the spiritual renewal of Judah through High Priest Joshua, we know that this does not stop with Judah’s restoration. Why? Because this passage points to the ultimate hope: the Messiah.

                두번째, 영원한 소망에 대해 말씀을 나누기 원합니다. 자 8절을 한번 같이 읽겠습니다. “대제사장 여호수아야 너와 네 앞에 앉은 네 동료들은 내 말을 들을 것이니라 이들은 예표의 사람들이라 내가 내 종 싹을 나게 하리라” 하나님께서 직접 말씀하십니다. 여호수아와 공동체의 현재적 회복은 이들 세대의 회복으로 끝나지 않고 하나님의 측량할 수 없는 회복과 구원을 예고하는 예표인 것입니다. “내 종 싹”이라고 하신 말씀은 이사야서나 예레미야서에서 반복적으로 등장하는 메시아에 대한 대표적인 표현입니다. 대표적인 예레미야 23:5말씀을 제가 읽어보겠습니다. “여호와의 말씀이니라 보라 때가 이르리니 내가 다윗에게 한 의로운 가지, (싹) 를(을) 일으킬 것이라 그가 왕이 되어 지혜롭게 다스리며 세상에서 정의와 공의를 행할 것이며” 또한 9절을 보십시오 한 돌이 있다고 합니다. 우리가 그리스도를 가르켜 표현하는 말 중에 이런 말이 있지요. 모퉁이의? 머릿돌. 그렇습니다. 이는 메시야, 즉, 예수 그리스도를 말씀하시는 것입니다. “내가 거기에 새길 것을 새기며 이 땅의 죄악을 하루에 제거하리라” 라고 말씀하지 않으십니까? 오늘 본문의 말씀은 하나님께서 자격없는 여호수아의 죄를 제거하시는 장면을 우리에게 보여주었습니다. 이는 예표로 그 하나님의 은혜가 전 인류의 죄악을 단 한번에 완전히 제거하실 메시야의 사역을 예고하고 계시는 것입니다. 아직도 더러운 옷을 입고 있었던 여호수아에게 그 옷을 벗기시고 그의 죄악을 제거하여 버리시고 그에게 아름다운 옷을 입히시며 정결한 관을 그 머리에 씌우시고 사탄이 아닌 천사로 그의 곁에 서게 하십니다. 사탄의 참소가 아닌 천사의 증언으로 그는 이제 하나님께서 맡기신 사명을 감당하게 되는 것입니다. 그렇게 사명을 감당하여 칭의와 성화를 이룬 성도들은 또한 10절의 말씀처럼 그날에 서로 다른 나라가 서로를 초대하며 함께 기뻐하는 평안을 누리게 될 것입니다. 이 평화는 유다의 현재적인 회복을 넘어 ‘많은 나라가 하나님께 돌아오는’ 영원한 안식과 교제를 나누는 영원한 소망을 그리고 있는 것입니다.


II. Eternal Hope: The Messianic Prophecy

Second, let’s talk about our eternal hope. Let's read verse 8 together:

“Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your companions who sit before you, for they are men who are a sign [or omen]; for behold, I will bring forth my Servant the Branch [or Sprout].”

God Himself speaks. The present restoration of Joshua and the community is not the end; it is a sign—a foreshadowing—of God’s immeasurable recovery and salvation yet to come.

The phrase “My Servant the Branch/Sprout” is a key Messianic title used repeatedly in Isaiah and Jeremiah. For example, Jeremiah 23:5 says:

“‘Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.’”

Look also at verse 9: It speaks of a Stone. We have a common phrase we use for Christ, don't we? The cornerstone or the chief cornerstone. This is clearly referring to the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

God says, “I will engrave its inscription, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.”

The passage today showed us God removing the sin from the undeserving Joshua. This is the type that anticipates the work of the Messiah—the one who will completely remove the sin of all humanity in one single day (referring to the day of the Cross).

To Joshua, who was still wearing dirty clothes, God stripped them off, took away his guilt, clothed him with beautiful robes, and placed a clean turban on his head, replacing the accuser (Satan) with those who stand near God (the Angel). No longer facing Satan's condemnation, but receiving the blessing of God, he is now commissioned to carry out his ministry.

Those who achieve justification and sanctification through this grace will, according to verse 10, enjoy a peace where nations will invite and rejoice with one another. This peace transcends Judah’s current restoration, pointing to the eternal rest and communion—the eternal hope—when many nations return to God.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀은 더러운 오물로 뒤집어쓴채로 고발 당할 수 밖에 없는 우리를 하나님께서 예수 그리스도라는 당신의 종 싹을 통하여 단번에 의롭게 하시고 새 옷을 입혀주시는 은혜의 현장을 보여주고 있습니다. 하나님께서 현 상황에 대한 회복 뿐만 아니라 이를 통하여 당신의 종인 메시야가 할 일을 보여주고 계신 것입니다. 우리는 더이상 사탄의 고발과 참소에 귀를 기울일 필요가 없습니다. 이제는 새 옷을 입고 정결한 관을 쓴 사명자로서 하나님의 도와 규례를 지키는 제사장 적인 삶을 살아야 할 것입니다. 그리고 우리의 대제사장 되시는 예수님께서 완성하실 그 날을 소망하며 살아가야 할 것입니다.

 

Conclusion

In closing, today’s text shows us the gracious scene where God, through His Servant the Branch—Jesus Christ—makes us righteous in a single act and clothes us in a new garment. We are people who, like Joshua, deserve to be condemned, covered in filth and accusations. God shows us the restoration for the immediate situation and uses it to foreshadow the ultimate work of His Servant, the Messiah.

We no longer need to listen to the accusations and condemnations of Satan. Now, wearing a new garment and a clean turban, we are commissioned people. We must live a priestly life by walking in God’s ways and keeping His charge. And above all, we must live in hope, looking forward to the day that our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, will fully accomplish.
