20251015 [새벽묵상] 하나님이 움직이신다 | God is on the move (슥/Zec 2:1~13)

ree

1 Then I looked up, and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2 I asked, “Where are you going?”

He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is.”

3 While the angel who was speaking to me was leaving, another angel came to meet him 4 and said to him: “Run, tell that young man, ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the great number of people and animals in it. 5 And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will be its glory within.’

6 “Come! Come! Flee from the land of the north,” declares the Lord, “for I have scattered you to the four winds of heaven,” declares the Lord.

7 “Come, Zion! Escape, you who live in Daughter Babylon!” 8 For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye— 9 I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them.[b] Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.

10 “Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,” declares the Lord. 11 “Many nations will be joined with the Lord in that day and will become my people. I will live among you and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you. 12 The Lord will inherit Judah as his portion in the holy land and will again choose Jerusalem. 13 Be still before the Lord, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.”

There is a timeless fantasy series, often called one of the 20th century's best fantasy Bibles, beloved across generations. It’s C.S. Lewis’s masterpiece, “The Chronicles of Narnia,” which has sold over 120 million copies worldwide. The first book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, tells this story: Four siblings, evacuated to the countryside to escape the bombing of World War II, stumble into the magical land of Narnia, a world ruled by the wicked White Witch. There, they join forces with the great Lion, Aslan, to confront her.

I’ve always been deeply struck by a particular line in the book. It concerns the news of Aslan, the true King, which is whispered as a legend in a Narnia gripped by an eternal winter under the White Witch's reign. The Beavers tell the protagonists: “Aslan is on the move - Perhaps has already landed.” In frozen Narnia, their only hope was the return of Aslan, their true King.

Our Scripture passage today echoes this hope. Let’s read the final verse of our text, Zechariah 2:13 (NIV):

“Be still before the Lord, all mankind, because he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.”

Friends, the Lord has roused Himself. God is on the move. In our lives, which can feel like an unending, frozen winter, God is about to accomplish His work. Today, I want to share a message titled "God is on the move," looking at what happens when God moves.

First, When God Moves, a Great Restoration Occurs.

Yesterday, we read a promise about a measuring line—a plumb line—that would be stretched out over Jerusalem. Today’s passage opens with that promise being fulfilled: an angel appears with the measuring line. Let’s read verse 2 (NIV):

“I asked, ‘Where are you going?’ He answered me, ‘To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is.’”

It’s the image of a surveyor preparing to rebuild, taking the dimensions for the city's reconstruction. Hearing this, the exiles must have been filled with expectation. They probably thought, "The former glory of the old Jerusalem—the city before the exile—is being restored!"

But then, another angel intercepts the first, delivering a message that surpasses those expectations. Look at verse 4 (NIV):

“and said to him: ‘Run, tell that young man, “Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the great number of people and animals in it.”’”

The Jerusalem described here is beyond anything they remembered. It will be so overwhelmed with people and livestock—a super-restoration, a super-revival—that the old walls simply won't be able to contain it. But if it's a city, a place of safety, shouldn't it have a wall to protect its inhabitants and their possessions? Otherwise, it’s functionally defenseless.

Now, let’s read verse 5 (NIV) together:

“And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will be its glory within.’”

Who will become their wall? God Himself will be a wall of fire around them. This is absolute protection. No one can invade. What comes to mind when you hear "a wall of fire"? The Garden of Eden. This is not a restoration we can imagine; it’s a magnificent restoration, a return to the state of Eden, just as God originally created it. Just as Christ reversed humanity’s destiny from bearing the original sin and marching into the wilderness, so God is now moving to bring about this great restoration.

Second, God Moves for His People, the Apple of His Eye.

Verses 6 and 7 are a direct call to the Jewish people still remaining in exile in Babylon. Let’s read verse 7 (NIV):

“ ‘Come away! Flee from the land of the north,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I have scattered you to the four winds of heaven,’ declares the Lord.”

This reminds me of a military operation where a nation first evacuates its embassy staff from a dangerous area before launching a strike. God is evacuating His people from the land He is about to strike. Why? Because His people are as precious to Him as the apple of His eye.

Let’s read verse 8 (NIV):

“For this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye—’”

To plunder Israel is to touch the apple of God’s eye. Because Israel is so precious to Him, He will not stand by while they are tormented. When God moves, as verse 9 says, those who enslaved them will become their plunder.

Third, God Moves to Make Us His Dwelling Place.

We saw in verse 13 that God has roused Himself from His holy dwelling, and all mankind will be silent before Him. This is a clear warning to all His adversaries. But to His own people, God gives a different command. Let’s read verse 10 (NIV):

“ ‘Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming to live among you,’ declares the Lord.”

He commands His people to sing and to rejoice. Why? Because God is coming to live among us, making us His dwelling place. When God resides among us, our entire situation changes fundamentally.

Look at the endearing term God uses for His people: “Daughter Zion.” It’s a sweet term of affection that shows just how much God loves His people. This passage reveals the special, intimate relationship between God and His people.

What is even more wonderful is that when that day comes, this intimacy won't be limited to Israel. Many nations will join them, coming into this close relationship as God's dwelling place. Let's read verse 11 (NIV):

“ ‘Many nations will join the Lord in that day and will become my people. I will live among you and you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.’ ”

When Jesus died on the cross for us, our sins were forgiven, and the Gospel was extended even to us—the Gentile nations. We have become the temple of God, the very dwelling place where the Holy Spirit resides. Remembering this allows us to sing and be glad.

ree

Conclusion: The Lord is on the move

Our lives can often be filled with unexpected suffering and anxiety. Like the never-ending winter of Narnia, the chilling cold can make us feel like all hope is lost.

But God has roused Himself from His dwelling. God is on the move.

He is performing a great restoration we cannot even imagine. He promises to protect us and take vengeance on our adversaries. He calls us by a loving nickname and promises to be present among us. ‘I will be a wall of fire around you.’ ‘You are the apple of my eye.’ ‘I will live among you.’ The God who speaks these words is moving now.

In the midst of your hardship, expect Him. Be glad. Sing!

God is on the move.
