12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

6:19 너희 육신이 연약하므로 내가 사람의 예대로 말하노니 전에 너희가 너희 지체를 부정과 불법에 내주어 불법에 이른 것 같이 이제는 너희 지체를 의에게 종으로 내주어 거룩함에 이르라

6:20 너희가 죄의 종이 되었을 때에는 의에 대하여 자유로웠느니라

6:21 너희가 그 때에 무슨 열매를 얻었느냐 이제는 너희가 그 일을 부끄러워하나니 이는 그 마지막이 사망임이라

6:22 그러나 이제는 너희가 죄로부터 해방되고 하나님께 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르는 열매를 맺었으니 그 마지막은 영생이라

6:23 죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라

19 I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

너희 지체를 의의 무기로 하나님께 드려라 (12~14절)

오늘 본문은 그러므로(12a)라고 시작합니다. 우리는 이미 그리스도와 함께 죄에 대하여 죽은 존재이며, 하나님에 대하여 산 존재입니다. 이제 그러므로 우리는 치열한 내 안에서 벌어지는 전투에 임해야 합니다.

만일 죄에 대하여 죽었다는 표현이 그동안 우리가 오해했던 것처럼 죄를 짓지 않는 상태를 의미한다면 바울이 오늘 본문을 기록할 이유가 없을 것입니다. 죄에 대하여 죽었다는 것은 우리의 주인이 죄가 아닌 하나님이라는 소속의 문제요, 이제는 죄와 상관없는 우리의 신분에 관한 표현입니다.

그러므로! 우리는 이제 우리의 죽을 몸(여전히 죄의 영향을 받을 수밖에 없는)을 죄가 지배하지 못하도록 몸의 사욕에 순종해서는 안 됩니다. 존 스토트는 이에 대해서 다음과 같이 말합니다.

죄는 우리의 자연적인 본능을 왜곡시키고, 졸림을 게으름으로, 배고픔을 탐욕으로,

성적 욕망을 육욕으로 격하시켜서, 우리의 몸을 악한 목적을 위해 이용하도록 하기 때문이다 …

죄의 몸에 대해서 고찰할 때 보았듯이, 몸의 모든 욕구는 나쁘지 않다. 하지만 죄는 우리 몸을 우리를 지배하는 교두보로 이용할 수 있다. 그래서 바울은 우리에게 죄에 대해서 저항하라고 명한다.

Offer Your Bodies as Instruments of Righteousness (Romans 6:12–14)

Today’s passage begins with the word “Therefore” (v.12a). We are already those who have died to sin with Christ and are alive to God. Therefore, we must now engage in the fierce battle that takes place within us.

If being “dead to sin” meant that we are in a state where we no longer commit sin—as it is often misunderstood—then Paul would have had no reason to write this passage. Being dead to sin means a change of ownership: our master is no longer sin but God. It speaks to our new identity, which has nothing to do with sin.

Therefore, though our mortal body is still subject to sin’s influence, we must not allow sin to reign in it, obeying its desires. John Stott explains it this way:

욕구 자체가 죄는 아니지만, 죄는 우리의 욕구를 왜곡, 격하시켜 결국에는 우리 몸을 불의의 무기로 만들어 버립니다. 하지만 우리 몸을 불의의 무기로 또는 의의 무기로 사용할 수 있도록 결정하는 것은 우리 자신입니다. 만일 우리 자신의 몸을 죄된 욕구에 내어준다면, 우리의 몸은 불의의 무기가 될 것입니다. 반대로 우리 자신의 몸을 예수님처럼 하나님께 드린다면, 우리의 몸은 의의 무기가 될 것입니다.

톰 라이트는 이 영적인 전투에서 이기는 방법에 대해서 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

이 특별한 전투에서 그들이 소유한 주요 무기는 세례와 믿음을 통해 자신이 누구인지 상기하는 것이다. 마틴 루터는 안팎으로 유혹과 시험을 받았을 때 “나는 세례를 받았다!”라고 외치곤 했다.

구약의 할례가 신약의 세례와 같은 역할을 했습니다. 이스라엘의 남자들은 하루에 몇 번씩 화장실을 가면서 자신의 정체성을 확인한 것입니다. 은혜 가운데 속한 자라는 정체성이 우리를 날마다 새롭게 합니다.

Desires themselves are not sin. Yet sin corrupts and degrades those desires, turning our bodies into instruments of unrighteousness. But it is up to us: if we yield our bodies to sinful desires, they become weapons of unrighteousness. If we yield our bodies to God—like Jesus did—they become weapons of righteousness.

Tom Wright described the way to victory in this spiritual battle:

Just as circumcision in the Old Testament marked identity, baptism in the New Testament serves the same role. The Israelites, seeing their circumcision daily, were reminded of who they were. Likewise, the identity that we belong to grace renews us every day.

우리는 의의 종이 되었습니다 (15~23절)

바울은 다시 앞서 말했던 동일한 수사학적인 질문을 합니다. 은혜를 더하게 하려고 죄에 거하겠느냐?(1), 은혜 아래 있으니 죄를 지으리요?(15). 답변도 동일합니다. 그럴 수 없느니라!(2, 15b). 그 이유는 우리가 순종하는 그것에 종이 되기 때문입니다. 우리의 욕구에 순종하다 보면, 죄는 우리의 욕구를 통해서 우리를 지배하고, 나중에는 우리는 죄의 지배를 받게 됩니다. 그리고 그렇게 죄의 지배를 받다 보면 결국 사망에 이르게 될 것입니다. 반면에 의와 은혜에 순종하면 결국에는 의(영생)에 이르게 될 것입니다.

회색지대는 없습니다. 예수님도 이와 동일한 말씀을 하셨습니다.

한 사람이 두 주인을 섬기지 못할 것이니 혹 이를 미워하고 저를 사랑하거나

혹 이를 중히 여기고 저를 경히 여김이라 너희가 하나님과 재물을 겸하여 섬기지 못하느니라

(마 6:24)

여기서 재물이란 재물을 사랑하는 빗나간 욕구, 탐욕을 표현하는 대표적인 것입니다. 재물은 매우 귀중하고, 중요하며, 사는데 꼭 필요한 하나님의 축복이지만, 죄는 이런 귀한 것을 불의의 것으로 바꾸어 죄의 몸에 거하는 우리로 하여금 탐욕의 노예, 물질의 노예가 되게 하는 것입니다.

We Have Become Slaves of Righteousness (Romans 6:15–23)

Paul once again raises a rhetorical question he has already asked: “Shall we continue in sin so that grace may abound?” (6:1), and again in verse 15, “Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?” His answer is the same: “By no means!” (vv.2, 15).

The reason is simple: we become slaves to whatever we obey. If we obey sinful desires, sin will rule over us, and its end is death. But if we obey righteousness and grace, its end is eternal life.

There is no middle ground. Jesus also said:

Here, “money” represents distorted desire—greed. Money itself is precious, important, and even a blessing from God. But sin twists what is good and turns it into a tool of unrighteousness, enslaving us to greed and materialism.

그렇다면 우리는 어떻게 죄의 노예에서 벗어날 수 있을까요?

바울은 갑자기 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 그 이유는 로마 교인들이 본래는 죄의 종이었는데, 그들에게 전하여 준 교훈, 곧 복음을 듣고 그들이 마음으로 순종했기 때문입니다. 그리하여 그들은 죄에서 해방되고 의에 종이 된 것입니다. 우리가 잘 알고 있는 복음의 은혜입니다. 결국 죄의 노예에서 벗어나는 것은 하나님이 주신 복음, 은혜를 먼저 믿어야 합니다. 그 다음은 입으로 시인하는 고백적 행동이 따라야 합니다. 죄의 전투에서 승리하는 비결을 정리하면 다음과 같습니다.

첫번째로 죄와 맞서서 싸우는 것입니다. 우리의 기본적인 욕구들이 게으름, 거짓, 미움, 교만, 음란, 탐욕으로 넘어가지 않도록 맞서 싸웁니다. 마귀를 대적하면 그들은 우리를 피할 것입니다(약 4:7).

두번째로 으르렁 거리는 것입니다. 기도하는 것입니다. 시험에 들지 않기를 기도해야 합니다(눅 22:40).

마지막으로 기도하면서 은혜의 막대기를 쥐는 것입니다. 은혜를 잊지 않고 기억하는 것을 의미합니다.

바울은 다시 한번 로마 교인들의 상반되는 과거와 현재의 형편을 비교하여 설명합니다(19~23). 과거에는 지체를 불법과 부정에 내주어 불법에 이르렀고(19), 의에 대하여 자유로웠습니다(20). 즉 죄책감이고 부끄러움이고 하나 없었다는 것입니다. 그리고 삶의 그 어떤 선한 열매도 없었습니다(21a).

하지만 의의 종이 된 지금은 우리의 지체를 의에 순종하여 거룩함에 이르게 됩니다(19b). 또한 과거의 죄악의 모습을 부끄러워합니다. 왜냐하면 그 결과는 영원한 사망이기 때문입니다(20). 열매 없는 과거의 삶과는 이제는 하나님의 종이 되어 거룩함에 이르는 열매(성령의 9가지 열매)를 맺습니다. 그리고 그 마지막은 영생입니다. 바울은 죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 예수 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라(23) 라고 정리합니다. 예수님은 이 영적인 원리를 두 가지 길로 비유하셨습니다.

좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고

생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 자가 적음이라 (마 7:13~14)

So how can we be freed from slavery to sin?

Paul suddenly gives thanks to God. Why? Because the Roman believers, once slaves of sin, had heard the teaching—the gospel—and obeyed it from the heart. They were set free from sin and became slaves of righteousness. That is the grace of the gospel we know so well. Freedom from sin begins with believing in the gospel God has given us, and it is followed by confessing that faith openly.

So, how do we win the battle against sin? Three things:

1. Stand against sin. Resist so that natural desires do not collapse into laziness, lies, hatred, pride, lust, or greed. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

2. Cry out. This means prayer. Pray that you may not fall into temptation (Luke 22:40).

3. Hold on to the rod of grace in prayer. This means remembering grace daily and never forgetting it.

Paul again contrasts the believers’ past and present (vv.19–23). In the past, they offered their bodies to impurity and lawlessness, leading to more lawlessness. They were “free” from righteousness—free from guilt and shame—but also fruitless, bearing nothing of eternal value, and their end was death.

But now, as slaves of righteousness, they yield their bodies to holiness. They feel ashamed of their former sins because those things lead only to death. Now, however, as servants of God, they bear the fruit of holiness (the fruit of the Spirit) and their end is eternal life. Paul sums it up in verse 23:

Jesus described the same principle with the image of two paths:

어느 길을 걷고 있습니까? 우리는 내적으로 회심하고, 외적으로 세례를 받음으로써 어떤 존재가 되었는지를 날마다 상기해야 합니다. 그것은 우리의 치열한 전투 가운데 승리할 수 있는 근거를 제공합니다.

우리의 소속은 죄가 아닌 은혜입니다. 날마다 은혜를 기억하고, 은혜의 지배를 받아 승리하는 우리가 되기를 진심으로 축원합니다. 의의 종이 되어 결국 영생에 이르게 되는 축복이 있을 줄 믿습니다.

Which path are you walking today? We must continually remind ourselves of who we are—through inner conversion and outward baptism. That identity gives us the foundation for victory in this fierce spiritual battle.

Our true allegiance is not to sin but to grace. May we daily remember grace, live under grace’s rule, and win the victory. I sincerely bless you: may you become slaves of righteousness and in the end inherit eternal life.
