| Who does God truly recognize as a leader?

12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, “We will not come! 13 Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now you also want to lord it over us! 14 Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you want to treat these men like slaves? No, we will not come!”

15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

16 Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you and they and Aaron. 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it—250 censers in all—and present it before the Lord. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.” 18 So each of them took his censer, put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord appeared to the entire assembly. 20 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 21 “Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once.”

22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, “O God, the God who gives breath to all living things, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?”

23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 “Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”

25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.” 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents.

28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me. 30 But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.”

31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”

35 And fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

Brothers and sisters, it's hard to believe, but I've been in the States for nearly twenty years now. And after all this time living the immigrant life, you hear things. You hear stories you don't necessarily want to hear.

And one of the things that always breaks my heart is when I hear about immigrant churches falling apart. Especially when it's a community I was once a part of – when I heard that fellowship had broken down, it really hit me hard.

Sometimes it's over theological disputes, other times it's because of personal failings, and the congregation gets fractured. Eventually, the church splits into two. Both sides, they claim they're the ones following God's will, and they paint the other side as being against God. And in the process, so many people get hurt, and they walk away from the church. It's a truly terrible thing. And that's what we see in our scripture today.

The Levite, Korah, along with Dathan and Abiram from the Reubenites, and On, they gathered the leaders of the congregation and rebelled against Moses and Aaron. They stirred up division throughout the whole community, picking at theological arguments and criticizing Moses' leadership, claiming it was ineffective. The community was on the verge of collapse. So, the question we have to ask ourselves is, who does God truly recognize as a leader?

Now, we know how the story ends. But through today's message, I pray we can gain a fresh understanding of what kind of person God recognizes as a leader.

First, let's look at those who rebelled against Moses. Yesterday, we heard how Korah challenged Moses, saying, "The whole community is holy, every one of them! Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?" (Numbers 16:3). He questioned why only Aaron and his sons should have the priesthood, since the Lord is with all the people.

So, what was Dathan and Abiram's complaint? Let's look at verse 13: "Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? And now1 would you also lord it over us?" They accused Moses of trying to be their king.

But if you think about it, Moses couldn't be their king. God is the King of Israel. Moses was simply the one who spoke God's commands. But they were so focused on what they could see, on Moses right in front of them, that they couldn't see the invisible God.

Verse 13 continues, "Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness?" Now, what land are they calling "a land flowing with milk and honey?" Egypt! They're twisting the description of the Promised Land, Canaan, and sarcastically applying it to Egypt. They're saying, if the land we haven't even entered, Canaan, is supposed to be the land of milk and honey, then Egypt, where we came from, was truly the land of milk and honey!

You see, everything they're saying is focused on what they can see. Verse 14: "Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards."2 What are they demanding? The land of milk and honey, fields, vineyards, an inheritance – all things they can see!

So, where is their reverence for the unseen God? Where is their faith in what they cannot see? That's why they say to Moses, "Will you gouge out the eyes of these men?" (Numbers 16:14). It's a figurative way of saying, "Are you trying to deceive us?" They're implying, "God is invisible, so it's all a lie, isn't it? What are you trying to pull?" Ultimately, they're blaming Moses for everything. Their desires were fixed on what their eyes could see; visible things were what mattered to them. The invisible God doesn't even get a mention. And because of that, they didn't fear God.

In verses 16-18, when Moses tells Korah and his followers to bring their censers with Aaron, if they had feared God, they never would have dared to do it! Remember in Leviticus 10:1-2, even Aaron's own sons, Nadab and Abihu, were struck dead by the Lord when they offered unauthorized fire in their censers. But these rebels, they weren't fearing God; they were trusting in the number of people on their side.

Verse 19 tells us that they gathered the whole community against Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Ah, they were planning to overwhelm them with sheer numbers! But then, the glory of the Lord appeared, and God intervened in the situation.

Now, let's look at Moses. In verse 15, when Moses heard what Dathan and Abiram said, he became very angry and testified to the Lord that he had not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor had he wronged any of them. His heart wasn't set on earthly possessions or comfort; the invisible God was what mattered to him. So, even though he was angry with them, he didn't argue back; he brought the situation before God.

Furthermore, in verses 20-22, when God's anger flared up against the whole assembly and He threatened to destroy them, Moses and Aaron fell facedown and pleaded with God to spare the people. This is the complete opposite of Korah and his followers, who provoked God's wrath and endangered the entire community. That's why the Lord spoke only to Moses and Aaron. And He told Moses how to avoid His wrath. What was it? Verse 24: "Go away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram!" God only gave this instruction to Moses, so Moses himself had to go and warn Dathan and Abiram.

Verse 27 shows us that the people obeyed God's command and moved away from the tents, and they were spared. If only Dathan and Abiram had repented, even at that point, and led their wives and children away from their tents, they might have been saved. For example, Numbers 26:11 tells us that Korah's sons did not die. But verse 30 says that Dathan and Abiram, because they despised the Lord, perished in the sight of all Israel.

Moses, however, sought only God's will. Verse 28 clearly explains why God recognized Moses as a leader. Let's read it together: "Moses said, 'By this you will know that the Lord has sent me to do all these things and that it is not my idea.'" You see, Moses was committed to doing everything according to the will of the invisible God. He wasn't pursuing his own agenda, but only God's will, and he worked to accomplish it.

In conclusion, brothers and sisters, today's passage shows us that it was the leaders of the people who opposed Moses and Aaron. And because of them, the entire nation of Israel was nearly destroyed. It was also the negative report of the tribal leaders, the spies, that caused Israel to rebel against God just before entering the Promised Land. Because of them, Israel failed to enter Canaan and perished in the wilderness. If only they had sought God's will... If only they had been the ones proclaiming that God would give them the land...

So, brothers and sisters, who is it that God recognizes as a leader, as revealed in today's message? Is it someone who seeks what is visible, what we desire? Or is it someone who is discouraged by the present reality and complains? Or is it someone who doesn't act on their own initiative but seeks God's will and acts according to it?

I urge you, examine the motives of your heart. Because we are capable of deceiving ourselves to get what we want. Even in our anger, may you be those who turn to God instead of turning against people, those who intercede for the church. So that through you, God's will may be done in our community. May you be those who do God's work according to His will, not our own thoughts or desires. Therefore, in every area of your lives, may you be recognized by God as faithful members, elders, deacons, and small group leaders. In the name of our Lord, I pray.
