20250225 [새벽묵상] 세상이 미워하는 예수님의 증인이 되라 | Become Witnesses of Jesus Whom the World Hates (요/Jhn 15:18~27)

ree

18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’

26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

In yesterday's message, Jesus gave His disciples a new command. He told them to love one another as He had loved them. And He said that to make this possible, they must remain in His love. Only when they first remain in Jesus' love can they keep the command He gave them—to love one another. While yesterday's message spoke about remaining in Jesus' love and loving one another, today's message talks about how the world will hate them and persecute them. Love and hatred. At first glance, these seem like completely opposite messages. But Jesus explains that the reason they receive hatred is because the world hates not them, but Jesus Himself. In other words, they receive the world's hatred precisely because they keep Jesus' commands and remain in His love.

Indeed, after Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples kept His commands and received the world's hatred and much persecution as they shared Jesus' love and teachings. However, if we look at Acts 5:41, we see that "The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name." They rejoiced at becoming witnesses of Jesus whom the world hated. Today, I want to share a message titled "Become Witnesses of Jesus Whom the World Hates."

First point of today's message: Jesus says that the world hates Him. Let's look together at verse 18: "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first." Jesus tells His disciples that if the world hates them, it's because of Him. He tells the disciples to know that the world hated Him before it hated them. In other words, it's not the disciples the world hates, but Jesus Himself. So how did the world hate Jesus?

First, they did not listen to Jesus' words. Verse 22: "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin." The Gospel of John repeatedly shows us scenes where Jesus debates with the Jews. Jesus told them that He is the bread of life, the light of the world, declaring Himself as the promised Messiah. But they did not listen to Jesus' words. In contrast, the Samaritan woman from Sychar and the people of her town—whom the Jews wouldn't even associate with—said in 4:41-42, "And because of his words many more became believers. They said to the woman, 'We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.'" So while some heard Jesus' words and believed in Him, these others did not listen even though Jesus spoke to them.

Second, they saw Jesus' signs but did not believe. Verse 24: "If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin." In John's Gospel, we're told that Jesus performed seven signs revealing His divinity. But even after seeing Jesus' sign of raising someone who had been dead for four days, they refused to believe in Him and instead resolved to kill Him. In contrast, the man born blind—whom the Jews considered a sinner—experienced Jesus' sign and came to Jesus saying, "Lord, I believe," and worshiped Him (9:38). Thus, while some saw the signs Jesus performed that no one else could do and believed in Him, these others did not believe.

Third, Jesus says that they did not hate Him alone. Jesus declares that when they hated Him, they also hated God who sent Him and who was with Him. Verse 23: "Whoever hates me hates my Father as well."

Fourth, there was no reason for their hatred of Jesus. Jesus gave them no reason to hate Him. Verse 25: "But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason.'" Thus, they did not listen to Jesus' words, they saw His signs but did not believe, they hated God by hating Jesus, and their hatred had no valid reason. This is how they hated Jesus.

Second point of today's message: Jesus, who received the world's hatred, tells His disciples that they will be His witnesses. He says they will be hated just as He was hated. Verse 20: "Remember what I told you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also." Jesus spoke these words—"A servant is not greater than his master"—right after washing His disciples' feet. At that time, He also said in 13:15, "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." Jesus brings back this message from the foot-washing and tells them to remember that a servant is not greater than his master. In other words, since Jesus their master showed them the example of receiving the world's hatred and persecution, the disciples as His servants would also receive the world's hatred and persecution, following His example. And verse 21 tells us why people will persecute the disciples as they did Jesus: "They will treat you this way because of my name." The disciples are not hated and persecuted because of themselves. It's because they bear Jesus' name. It's because they are witnesses testifying about Jesus. If not for Jesus' name, they would have no reason to be hated. Rather, they would receive the world's love. It's because they are witnesses of Jesus whom the world hates that they too receive this hatred.

In conclusion, Jesus says that the world hates Him. The world does not listen even when Jesus speaks. Even when Jesus showed signs that no one else could perform, they saw but did not believe in Him. The world's hatred of Jesus was hatred not only of Him but also of God. And they hated Jesus without cause, without reason. This is how the world hated Jesus—and this is the path the disciples had to follow. Because Jesus chose them and they became witnesses to His name, they had to follow Jesus' example and receive the world's hatred. But becoming witnesses of Jesus whom the world hates was an honor for the disciples. It was a joy. May we also become such witnesses of Jesus. Let us pray.
