20250219 [새벽묵상] 우리를 향한 주님의 마음과 우리를 향한 우리의 마음 | How Jesus' Heart Flows Toward Us When Ours Flows Inward (요/Jhn 13:31~38)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

After Judas Iscariot left, Jesus knew that all the pieces of the puzzle toward the cross were complete. Now, only time remained until this would be fulfilled. Jesus says that now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. However, Jesus was thinking not only about what He would accomplish on the cross, but also about the disciples who would remain when He returned to God. So He tells them, "Where I am going, you cannot come." Then Jesus gives a new commandment to His disciples who would be left without Him. That commandment was to love one another as Jesus had loved them. It feels like a parent's final words to their children before death, saying, "Even if I'm gone, live together in harmony." Through this commandment, we can see how Jesus' heart flows toward them. But despite these loving words, Peter doesn't seem particularly interested in this commandment. For him, this commandment isn't the most important thing right now. Of course, since it's a commandment from Jesus, it must be important, but Peter has something more pressing on his mind. His attention is elsewhere. Since Jesus is going somewhere they cannot follow, where exactly is He planning to go? Peter's attitude resembles our own when we try to hear only what we want to hear despite God speaking important words to us. It's like when all our attention is focused on what matters to us rather than on what God is saying. Today, I want to preach about the Lord's heart toward us and our hearts toward ourselves.

First, let's consider the Lord's heart toward us. After receiving a piece of bread from Jesus, Judas immediately went out into the darkness of night. After Judas left, Jesus spoke. Verse 31: "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him." Jesus says the Son of Man is glorified "now." Jesus hadn't even been crucified yet, so what does it mean that now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him? It means that with Judas's betrayal, Jesus' crucifixion was now confirmed. All the pieces toward the cross have fallen into place. So Jesus is speaking of the glory of the Son of Man and God as if Jesus' crucifixion is being decided and accomplished right now.

But when you think about it, isn't there still a variable remaining? Isn't Jesus Himself the variable? Even if all circumstances were preparing the way to the cross, if Jesus Himself decided He couldn't go through with it, wouldn't everything fall apart? How could Jesus be so certain about this? First, it's because this was for God's glory. In verses 31 and 32 of today's passage, the word "glory" appears four times in just two verses. Verse 31 especially makes it clear that the Son of Man receiving glory leads to God receiving glory. Jesus would not abandon the cross in order to bring glory to God.

The second reason for Jesus' confidence is that His crucifixion would reveal the depth of God's love for humanity and Jesus' love for His followers. Doesn't John 13:1 say, "Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end"? Because Jesus loved His disciples and us to the end, He knew His determination to go to the cross would remain steadfast to the end. This is Jesus' heart toward us.

Looking at verse 33, once Jesus confirmed His departure from the disciples, the way He addressed them changed for the first time: "Little children." In the original text, He calls them "children." It's the same word as in John 1:12, "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." This is an address that reveals how Jesus thinks about them and how much He loves them.

Then He speaks in verse 34: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." As I mentioned in the introduction, this feels like a parent's final words to their children before leaving the world, telling them to live in harmony even when they're gone. This commandment reveals the heart with which Jesus speaks to His disciples, who will be left alone when He departs. If they love one another as Jesus loved them, wouldn't Jesus' love remain with them even after He leaves? This is how Jesus' love flows toward them.

However, Peter doesn't hear Jesus' commandment. His ears only pick up on where Jesus is going—what matters to him. Even now, as Jesus' heart is commanding them to love one another, Peter's mind is elsewhere. This is our image too. Our hearts are directed not toward God but toward ourselves. Because our hearts are focused only on what's important to us, we fail to hear what Jesus is saying and only catch what interests us. This is our weakness.

And we impulsively make decisions and commitments based on what we hear, believing we're doing the Lord's work—even though we don't care whether it's what Jesus wants. In verse 36, Jesus reassures Peter, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." But this answer doesn't satisfy Peter. So he responds in verse 37, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." Jesus neither rejoices in Peter's words nor trusts them. Instead, He predicts that Peter will deny Him three times.

To conclude, as we've seen through today's passage, Jesus' heart flows toward us. But in many cases, our hearts seem directed not toward Jesus but toward ourselves. We try to hear what we want to hear rather than Jesus' words, and we get distracted by what matters to us. We can't take our eyes off ourselves. This seems to be our weakness.

But the good news is that even when we fail before the Lord, Jesus loves us and helps us rise again. He helps us understand when we don't comprehend and strengthens our faith when it's weak. As you well know, didn't Jesus restore Peter by asking him three times, "Do you love me?" Because Jesus' heart flows toward us, we have hope. Let us pray.
