12:1 이러므로 우리에게 구름같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들이 있으니 모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어 버리고 인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,
12:2 믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자 그는 그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여 십자가를 참으사 부끄러움을 개의치 아니하시더니 하나님 보좌 우편에 앉으셨느니라
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
12:3 너희가 피곤하여 낙심하지 않기 위하여 죄인들이 이같이 자기에게 거역한 일을 참으신 이를 생각하라
3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
12:4 너희가 죄와 싸우되 아직 피 흘리기까지는 대항하지 아니하고
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.
12:5 또 아들들에게 권하는 것 같이 너희에게 권면하신 말씀도 잊었도다 일렀으되 내 아들아 주의 징계하심을 경히 여기지 말며 그에게 꾸지람을 받을 때에 낙심하지 말라
5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
12:6 주께서 그 사랑하시는 자를 징계하시고 그가 받아들이시는 아들마다 채찍질하심이라 하였으니
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
12:7 너희가 참음은 징계를 받기 위함이라 하나님이 아들과 같이 너희를 대우하시나니 어찌 아버지가 징계하지 않는 아들이 있으리요
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
12:8 징계는 다 받는 것이거늘 너희에게 없으면 사생자요 친아들이 아니니라
8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
12:9 또 우리 육신의 아버지가 우리를 징계하여도 공경하였거든 하물며 모든 영의 아버지께 더욱 복종하여 살려 하지 않겠느냐
9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!
12:10 그들은 잠시 자기의 뜻대로 우리를 징계하였거니와 오직 하나님은 우리의 유익을 위하여 그의 거룩하심에 참여하게 하시느니라
10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
12:11 무릇 징계가 당시에는 즐거워 보이지 않고 슬퍼 보이나 후에 그로 말미암아 연단 받은 자들은 의와 평강의 열매를 맺느니라
11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
유명한 도시들은 권위있는 마라톤 대회를 합니다.
대표적인 대회가 뉴욕, 보스톤, 런던, 로테르담 마라톤입니다.
이렇게 유명한 대회에는 수많은 사람들이 몰려옵니다. 하지만 그 많은 사람이 함께 달려도 결국 우승하는 사람은 한 사람이고, 극소수의 사람들 만이 입상을 할 수 있습니다.
그럼에도 사람들이 대회에 참가하는 것을 보면, 마라톤이라는 운동이 매우 매력적인 운동이라는 생각이 듭니다. 히브리서 기자는 오늘 본문에서 이런 그림을 가지고 비유적인 교훈을 줍니다.
Prominent cities host prestigious marathon events, with notable races such as the New York, Boston, London, and Rotterdam Marathons. Despite the large crowds that gather for these famous races, ultimately, only one person wins, and only a handful receive awards. Yet, people's participation in these races suggests that marathons are incredibly appealing sports.
In today's passage, the author of Hebrews uses this analogy to provide metaphorical lessons.
예수를 바라보라 (1~3절)
앞서 수많은 구약의 믿음의 용사들을 열거한 히브리서 저자는 그들이 구름같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들(1a) 이라고 말합니다. 여기서 증인에 해당하는 헬라어가 마르튀스μάρτυς인데, 이 단어에서 순교자에 해당하는 영어 martyr가 나왔습니다. 초대교회에서 증인은 곧 순교자였던 것입니다.
구약과 초대교회에 걸친 수많은 증인들, 곧 순교자들이 천국에서 이 땅에 있는 성도들을 지켜보는 가운데 성도들은 누구나 할 것 없이 신앙의 경주를 해야 하는 것입니다.
히브리서 저자는 이 신앙의 경주를 아테네에서 벌어진 올림픽 경기나 고린도 시에서 벌어진 이스드미안 경기에서 마라톤을 달리는 선수에 비유하여 설명하고 있는 것입니다.
경기에 나서는 자들은 누구나 할 것 없이 경기 규칙에 따라 임해야 합니다.
그리고 경기에서 승리하기 위해서는 몇 가지 지켜야 할 것이 있습니다.
Look to Jesus (Verses 1-3):
The author first mentions the countless witnesses, often interpreted as martyrs, who surround us like a cloud. These witnesses, spanning the Old Testament and early Church, observe the saints on Earth engaging in the race of faith, just as marathon runners compete according to rules.
첫째로 모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어 버려야 합니다.
운동 선수들은 평소 연습할 때는 모래 주머니나 무게 추, 또는 땀 복 등을 입고 연습합니다.
하지만 막상 시합에 출전하는 선수들은 최소의 복장으로 간편하게 출전합니다.
그렇다면 모든 무거운 것은 무엇이고, 얽매이기 쉬운 죄는 무엇일까요?
토랜스 중앙장로교회를 담임했던 고 이순한 목사는 전자는 욕심, 명예, 재산, 권세, 세상 염려, 근심으로 후자는 악착 같이 성도들을 괴롭히고 떠나지 않는 죄, 곧 내 마음대로 살면서 짓게 되는 모든 죄악들이라고 설명합니다. 동의하는 바입니다.
덧붙여 개인적으로 히브리서의 독자들이 유대 율법주의자들의 신앙의 배교의 유혹을 받는 상황으로 볼 때, 모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄는 그들을 유혹하는 율법주의 교리일 수도 있다는 생각도 듭니다.
여하튼 무거운 짐을 지우는 유대인의 율법주의든 내 마음대로 하려는 자율주의든 이런 모든 죄를 벗어 버려야 신앙의 마라톤을 잘 달릴 수 있습니다.
Firstly, we must shed every heavy load and easily entangling sin.
Athletes train with weights but compete with minimal attire. What are these heavy burdens and entangling sins? Reverend Soo-Han Lee explained that they include desires, honor, possessions, power, worldly concerns, and persistent sins. I concur. Additionally, considering the Hebrews' situation, they might also include the temptation of Judaic legalism.
Whether it's the burdens of Jewish legalism or the sins we commit when living according to our own desires, we must shed them to run the marathon of faith effectively.
둘째로 인내입니다.
모든 운동 선수를 보면 평소 훈련자체가 인내의 훈련이라는 생각이 듭니다.
실제 마라톤 선수들의 속도는 100m를 2시간 동안 17~18초로 달리는 속도입니다.
속도도 놀랍지만, 2시간을 쉬지 않고 계속 달린다는 사실이 놀라울 뿐입니다.
이 모든 것이 인내의 결과입니다. 고통스러운 훈련을 견딜 때 값진 결과를 얻을 수 있습니다.
바울 역시 인내의 중요함에 대해서 갈라디아 교인들에게 다음과 같이 격려했습니다.
우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 포기하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라 (갈 6:9)
Secondly, patience is required.
I often think that athletes' training is an exercise in patience. Marathon runners maintain an astonishing pace of about 17-18 seconds per 100 meters for two hours. Their ability to endure is what truly astonishes. It's the result of patience through grueling training. In Galatians 6:9, Paul emphasizes the importance of patience.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9)
셋째로 예수를 바라보는 것입니다.
운동에는 목표의식이나 목표가 필요합니다. 즉 골Goal이 있어야 합니다. 목표가 분명해야 성공할 수 있습니다. 믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인 예수를 바라보자(2a)에서 바라보다ἀφορῶντες아포론테스는 시선을 어떤 목표에 고정하라는 의미입니다.
신앙의 경주를 하는 성도들이 시선을 고정해야 하는 대상이 바로 예수입니다. 그리고 예수를 바라본다는 것은 우리 죄인들을 구원하시기 위해서 십자가의 고난과 수치를 감당하신 예수를 생각하는 것입니다.
히브리서 저자가 이렇게 글을 쓰는 이유는 히브리서 독자들의 상황을 반영하는 것입니다.
신앙생활을 하다 보면 부끄럽고, 수치스럽고, 피곤하여 낙심할 때가 있습니다. 그런데 예수님은 성도들이 이러한 고통 당할 것을 미리 아시고 십자가의 수치를 참으심으로 우리에게 본을 보이셨다는 것입니다.
그러므로 성도는 고난을 당할 때 나를 위하여, 죄인들이 예수님을 거역하신 일을 참으신 것을 묵상하는 것만으로도 고난을 이겨낼 수 있다는 의미입니다.
Thirdly, fix your gaze on Jesus.
Any sport requires a clear goal or target, a goal (or "Gol" in Greek). Our target in the race of faith is Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith. Fixing our gaze on Jesus means thinking about Him enduring the shame and suffering of the cross to save us sinners. The author of Hebrews wrote this to reflect the situation of his audience, who might have been tempted by Judaic legalistic teachings. Regardless, fixing our eyes on Jesus helps us overcome trials.
징계의 유익 (4~11절)
인내를 한다는 것은 바로 인내해야 할 것들이 존재하는 것을 전제로 합니다.
그리고 저자는 성도들이 인내할 것은 고난(죄)과 더불어 징계라고 말합니다(4, 5).
히브리서 기자는 징계παιδεία 파이데이아 라는 단어를 사용하고 있는데, 이것은 교육과 훈련을 목적으로 하는 결코 고통이나 괴로움이 목적이 아닌 그 너머의 좋은 결과를 바랄 때 사용하는 단어입니다. 그러므로 징계는 마치 아버지가 엄하게 자녀를 훈육하는 것과 동일한 것이며, 운동선수들의 훈련과도 동일한 것입니다. 히브리서 저자는 징계의 참의미에 대해서 다음과 같이 말합니다.
The Value of Discipline (Verses 4-11):
Endurance assumes the presence of things to endure. The author speaks of enduring both suffering (sin) and discipline. He uses the Greek word "paideia," which refers to discipline for the purpose of education and training, not just punishment. It's similar to how a father disciplines his children for their good. The author emphasizes two aspects:
첫째로 하나님께 징계를 받는 것은 하나님의 사랑하시는 자녀라는 증거입니다.
성도가 인내하는 이유가 징계를 받기 위함이라고 말할 정도로 징계는 가치가 있는 것입니다(7).
징계가 없으면 진짜 자녀가 아닙니다. 징계는 자녀에 대한 아버지의 관심과 사랑의 증거입니다(8).
Firstly, receiving discipline from God is evidence of being His beloved children.
Secondly, discipline is beneficial, leading to righteousness and peace. Even though it may be painful at the time, those trained by it bear the fruit of righteousness.
둘째로 징계는 성도들에게 유익을 줍니다.
그러므로 징계에 대한 우리의 태도는 복종이어야 합니다. 육신의 아버지가 징계해도 우리가 공경하는데, 하물며 모든 영의 아버지신 하나님께는 더욱 복종해야 함이 마땅합니다.
왜냐하면 인간 아버지는 잠시 감정에 따라 자녀들을 징계할 수도 있지만, 하나님 아버지는 결코 그렇지 않기 때문입니다. 징계를 받는 당시에는 괴롭지만, 그로 말미암아 연단 받은 자들은 의와 평강의 열매를 맺습니다.
어떤 고난과 징계가 있어도 믿음의 주요 온전하게 하시는 예수를 바라보며, 끝까지 인내로 신앙의 경주를 할 때 세상의 마라톤과 달리 결승선을 통과하는 우리 모두는 주님께로부터 금면류관을 받을 것입니다.
숨이 턱에 차더라도 인내로서 끝까지 경주하는 우리 공동체 되기를 기도합니다.
No matter the challenges or discipline, looking to Jesus, enduring with patience, and running the marathon of faith, we will all receive the crown from the Lord, even when we're breathless. I pray that we, as a community, endure to the end."
