9 “Yet I destroyed the Amorites before them,

though they were tall as the cedars

    and strong as the oaks.

I destroyed their fruit above

    and their roots below.

10 I brought you up out of Egypt

and led you forty years in the wilderness

to give you the land of the Amorites.

11 “I also raised up prophets from among your children

and Nazirites from among your youths.

Is this not true, people of Israel?”

declares the Lord.

12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine

and commanded the prophets not to prophesy.

13 “Now then, I will crush you

as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.

14 The swift will not escape,

the strong will not muster their strength,

and the warrior will not save his life.

15 The archer will not stand his ground,

the fleet-footed soldier will not get away,

and the horseman will not save his life.

16 Even the bravest warriors

will flee naked on that day,”

declares the Lord.

In 2004, the melodrama film A Moment to Remember became a hit not only in Korea but also in Japan and across Asia. It is a love story about a young man and woman who meet, fall in love, and get married despite differences in their backgrounds and social standing. However, a crisis strikes their love when they discover that the wife's severe forgetfulness is actually Alzheimer's disease (dementia). In the end, the wife tries to leave her husband's side before she loses even the memories of their love, but the husband stays by her side until the very end, ending in a beautiful story of enduring love. It truly shows how important it is to remember things.

Around that time, similar movies were popular. One movie dealt with short-term memory loss, where the protagonist's memory reset every day. Because of this, the main character formed a habit of writing down everything in detail so that when opening their eyes the next morning, they wouldn't forget what had happened the day before.

In truth, forgetting is something very necessary for us. However, to put it accurately, knowing what to remember and what to forget is far more crucial. We must remember what should be remembered and forget what should be forgotten. Doing the opposite leads to ruin.

Grace Deprivation Syndrome (Verses 9–12)

Amos was the first to minister among the 16 prophets who recorded their revelations in writing. He appears to have been active around 760 BC, before Northern Israel was judged by Assyria. His ministry established two major traditions for the prophets who followed him.

The first was documenting the message he proclaimed. Although predecessors like Elijah and Elisha ministered a century before Amos, they did not leave written records of their messages. Prophet Amos was the first to document God's message in writing.

The second relates to the core content of a prophet's message: building a monumental legacy of realizing justice and righteousness. Although Israel was a community and people of grace, the message warned that they too would inevitably face God's judgment if they failed to spread His justice and righteousness throughout their society and community. It was a message that a nation's destiny is inextricably linked to its social ethics and morality.

With this basic framework, Prophet Amos previously declared judgment upon seven neighboring nations. He then announced the judgment coming upon a complacent Northern Israel and detailed the reasons: social, moral, sexual, and spiritual corruption. The passage that follows in today's text can be simply summarized as: "After all I have done for you, how could you do this to me?" God speaks of three major things He did for Israel:

First, He destroyed the Amorites before Israel (v. 9).

This refers to the Conquest of Canaan. Although the native inhabitants of Canaan—the Amorites—were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, God made them fall before Israel, uprooting their fruit above and their roots below. He gave Israel the victory. You can easily grasp the meaning of this verse by remembering the conquest of Jericho.

Second, He mentions the Exodus (v. 10).

The Exodus is an indispensable event whenever we speak of God's grace, national milestones, and gratitude. It marks the official birth of the nation of Israel and serves as a monument of astounding miracles. God led them out of Egypt, cared for them during 40 years in the wilderness, and ultimately allowed them to defeat the Canaanites—the Amorites—and possess their land.

Third and finally, He gave them prophets and Nazirites (v. 11).

The prophets represent the revelation of God's word, while the Nazirites refer to individuals set apart to maintain holiness before God, such as Samuel or Samson. Ultimately, this signifies the revelation of God's word and the sacred calling to preserve and obey it.

However, the problem was that Israel forced the Nazirites to drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy (v. 12). What does this mean? Put simply, they destroyed true worship. They rejected the holy lifestyle dedicated to keeping God's covenant, as well as the messages God provided. Since these two elements are expressed through the act of worship, rejecting them amounted to rejecting authentic worship itself.

The Result (Verses 13–16)

That result is what the prophet Amos predicts. Amos, a shepherd and a tender of sycamore-fig trees, gives a warning using a familiar pastoral scene of his time: just as a cart laden with sheaves presses down heavily into muddy ground, so God will press down upon Israel. The reality behind this metaphor is war, which God uses to crush them. So devastating is this war that the swift runner cannot escape, the strong cannot retain their strength, the warrior cannot save his life, the archer cannot stand, and the horseman cannot flee to safety. Even the bravest among the warriors will flee naked on that day in utter desperation.

God brought Israel out of Egypt, drove out the Amorites, and sent Nazirites and prophets so they would always abide in His word. Yet you (v. 12) rejected and surrendered God's revealed word and the life of a Nazirite. In a word, Israel forgot the grace God had granted them. They fell ill with "Grace Deprivation Syndrome." As a result, they were bound to feel the rod of God's war, crushed like a heavily loaded cart.

What this generation truly needs are prophets and Nazirites. We need messengers who faithfully deliver God's true word without adding or subtracting anything. And we need an increasing number of Nazirites who strive by all means to live out that spoken word. When these two essential groups disappear, a nation falls.

This is because honoring their roles is how we preserve the grace given to us in the past. Christianity is a faith that remembers grace and commemorates the past. This does not mean we remain trapped in the past; rather, it reflects Jesus' instruction, "Do this in remembrance of me." Remembering the grace given in the past is the secret to enjoying the grace provided in the present.

Remembering what God has done for us—to Remember—is the wonderful secret to continuously Re-Membering (rejoining) the community of God. To Remember is the only way to Re-Member. Let us not fall victim to Grace Deprivation Syndrome.
