1 Praise the Lord.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord,

    who find great delight in his commands.

2 Their children will be mighty in the land;

    the generation of the upright will be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches are in their houses,

    and their righteousness endures forever.

4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,

    for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

5 Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,

    who conduct their affairs with justice.

6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken;

    they will be remembered forever.

7 They will have no fear of bad news;

    their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;

    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,

    their righteousness endures forever;

    their horn will be lifted high in honor.

10 The wicked will see and be vexed,

    they will gnash their teeth and waste away;

    the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

                  어제 우리는 하나님께서 행하셨던 일들이 얼마나 위대하고 영광스러운지에 대해 나누었습니다. 오늘은 그 크신 일들을 행하신 여호와를 경외하는 자의 삶이란 어떤 것인가? 함께 살펴보기 원합니다. 특별히 본문의 1절은 “할렐루야, 여호와를 경외하며 그의 계명을 크게 즐거워하는 자는 복이 있도다” 라고 포문을 열고 있지요. 하나님을 경외하는 자, 그는 복 있는 사람이라는 것입니다. ‘복 있는 사람’ 이라는 구절을 들으시면 또 어떤 말씀이 떠오르시나요? 시편 1장 1절, “복있는 사람은…” 이라는 말씀이 떠오르시지요? 그렇습니다. 오늘 시편 112편의 말씀은 시편 1편의 복 있는 사람과 맞닿아 있습니다. 원문으로 보면 더 비슷합니다. “아슈레 하이쉬,” “아슈레 이쉬”, “복 있는 자.” 오늘은 “복 있는 사람의 삶을 삽시다”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction: The Identity of the Blessed Man

Yesterday, we shared about how great and glorious the works of the Lord are. Today, we want to look at what the life of a person who fears this great God looks like. Verse 1 opens with a powerful declaration:

“Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments!”

A person who fears God is a blessed person. When you hear the phrase, “Blessed is the man,” what other scripture comes to mind? Naturally, you think of Psalm 1:1: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked...”

Indeed, today’s Psalm 112 directly connects with the "blessed man" of Psalm 1. In the original Hebrew text, they sound even more alike: “Ashrei ha-ish” (אַשְׁרֵי הָאִישׁ), meaning “Blessed is the man.” Today, I want to share a message titled, "Let Us Live the Life of a Blessed Person."

1. The Legacy of the Righteous vs. The Vanishing of the Wicked

What does a blessed person look like? Let us read verse 2 together:

“His descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.”

The very first blessing mentioned for the one who fears the Lord is the blessing of their descendants. This reveals that when a person stands upright and fears God, the blessing is not limited to them alone—it overflows to their children and grandchildren, making them mighty in the land.

In verse 10, we see the stark contrast of the wicked. While the descendants of the righteous are blessed and grow stronger, what happens to the wicked?

“The wicked man sees it and is vexed; he gnashes his teeth and wastes away...”

The wicked cannot stand against the righteous. They may boil with rage to the point of gnashing their teeth, but what is their ultimate end? They waste away and vanish. Just like chaff driven by the wind, they exist for a brief moment and then disappear, never to be found again.

2. The Purpose of Wealth: Fulfilling God’s Justice

There is another striking characteristic of a blessed person. Let us read verse 3 together:

“Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.”

Amen! Reading this verse instantly lifts our spirits. Who wouldn't want wealth and riches in their house? It sounds amazing. However, the second half of the verse might seem a bit puzzling. What is the relationship between having wealth and riches and the statement that “his righteousness endures forever”? Why are they placed side-by-side?

We find the answer in verse 9. Let us read it together:

“He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.”

Now, the reason why God grants wealth and riches to the righteous becomes crystal clear. A person who fears the Lord and greatly delights in His commandments is someone who scatters his wealth to give to the needy. Therefore, for the righteous, wealth and riches are not meant for selfish indulgence; rather, they are tools to establish God’s justice on this earth.

Look at verse 10 again. When the wicked waste away, what disappears with them? It says: “the desire of the wicked will perish.” Living solely for oneself, chasing one's own desires and personal gain—that is the mark of the wicked. On the flip side, the righteous scatter the blessings God has given them to help the poor. And God promises to lift up their “horn”—meaning He will exalt them in glory and honor.

Generosity with Godly Discernment Does this mean we should be pushovers who blindly give away everything we have without any thought? No, absolutely not. Let us read verse 5: “It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice.” To conduct one's affairs "with justice" means to act righteously, wisely, and with sharp discernment. The blessed person is someone who willingly lends and shows grace to others—just as they received grace from God—but they do so based on the standard of God's justice.

3. Unshakable Faith in the Midst of Darkness

Another defining trait of a blessed person is a steadfast faith that refuses to fear.

Verse 4 acknowledges that darkness can fall even upon the upright. Verse 7 notes that bad news—disasters, financial losses, or threatening reports that shake life to its core—can reach them too. Yet, what does verse 4 declare?

“Light dawns in the darkness for the upright...”

The root meaning of the phrase "light dawns" is "the sun bursts forth." Think about it: the pitch-black darkness of the night vanishes instantly when the sun rises, as if it were never there. In the same way, God’s sovereign intervention breaks through the deepest darkness and shines upon the righteous like brilliant sunlight.

Why does God protect the righteous this way? Verse 4 describes them as: “gracious, compassionate, and righteous.” Doesn’t this phrasing sound familiar? Yes! The person who fears the Lord reflects the very character of God. Because they resemble God’s heart—being gracious, full of compassion, and righteous—God moves to rescue them.

Because they trust in this God, verse 7 tells us they will have no fear of bad news. Verse 8 assures us that their hearts are secure, waiting patiently for God to work, until they finally look in triumph on their foes. Their confidence is not in themselves. They remain unshaken in the face of darkness and bad news because their absolute trust is anchored in God.

It is this exact faith that enables them to give so generously. If we truly believe that God will make both us and our descendants mighty, and that He will pour out wealth and riches into our lives, why would we hesitate to share those blessings with the poor?

Conclusion: A Legacy That Endures Forever

Let us conclude. A blessed person who fears the Lord and greatly delights in His commandments is someone who resembles God. They are individuals who rely fully on God, securing their hearts so deeply that they refuse to fear. Because they trust Him completely, they can afford to be gracious, compassionate, and righteous toward others. They freely scatter the grace they have received from God onto the poor.

When we live this way, we become the reality of verse 6, which is the crown jewel of today’s scripture:

“Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever.”

I pray in the name of the Lord that you will live the life of a blessed person—one who is remembered forever by God and forever by people.

Let us pray.
