The Lord Who Stands by the Brokenhearted (시/Ps 109:17~31)

17 He loved to pronounce a curse—

    may it come back on him.

He found no pleasure in blessing—

    may it be far from him.

18 He wore cursing as his garment;

    it entered into his body like water,

    into his bones like oil.

19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,

    like a belt tied forever around him.

20 May this be the Lord’s payment to my accusers,

    to those who speak evil of me.

21 But you, Sovereign Lord,

    help me for your name’s sake;

    out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.

22 For I am poor and needy,

    and my heart is wounded within me.

23 I fade away like an evening shadow;

    I am shaken off like a locust.

24 My knees give way from fasting;

    my body is thin and gaunt.

25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers;

    when they see me, they shake their heads.

26 Help me, Lord my God;

    save me according to your unfailing love.

27 Let them know that it is your hand,

    that you, Lord, have done it.

28 While they curse, may you bless;

    may those who attack me be put to shame,

    but may your servant rejoice.

29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace

    and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord;

in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.

31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy,

to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

[Introduction: The Pain of Being Wronged]

Living in this world, there are times when we face deeply unfair situations. This is especially true when we do good to others, yet suffer financial loss, emotional damage, or insults in return. Sometimes, because we lack power, money, or influence, we find ourselves completely helpless against those who wrong us. We end up carrying a wounded heart, unable to do anything about it.

The psalmist in today’s scripture is in this exact painful reality. He extended good deeds and treated people with genuine love, but they opposed him and hated him without any cause. In verse 22, he honestly confesses his helpless state: “For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.” When we go through such trials—when our hearts are completely shattered—what should we do? And where on earth is God in moments like these? Today, I want to share a message titled: “The Lord Who Stands by the Brokenhearted.”

[1. Go to God Exactly as You Are (v. 17-25)]

First, when we face moments that break our hearts, we must go to God with our emotions exactly as they are. Psalm 109, which we have been meditating on, is a prayer of a deeply wronged believer pleading with God to vindicate him. In doing so, he vents his anger by cursing his enemy, and the phrases he uses are chillingly terrifying. He prays not only for his enemy's downfall but for his entire family line to be cut off and erased from human memory.

Today's text continues in that exact same raw tone. In verse 17, he asks that the very curses the enemy loved to pronounce fall back upon him. In verse 18, he prays that cursing pours into the enemy's body like water and into his bones like oil. It sounds frightening, doesn't it? We must remember that in ancient times, people believed curses held actual, physical power. Imagine how desperate and furious someone must be to pray this way.

What about you? Have you ever prayed a prayer like this? As Christians, we tend to be very polite. We feel an implicit pressure to always look nice, patient, and holy. No matter how deeply we are wronged, we usually filter our prayers to sound like this: "Lord, I should have compromised more and forgiven them. Forgive me for my lack of love," or "Please give me the supernatural strength to forgive them." While those are beautiful prayers, hear this truth today: when you are in agonizing pain and distress, you do not have to filter your emotions before God. You are permitted to pour out your raw heart exactly as it is. That is what real prayer looks like. Even if you are so heartbroken that you openly vent, complain, or cry out in anger against your enemy, God can handle it. God is too vast and too loving to be offended by your raw honesty. Do not limit God with your polite religious expectations. Pour out all your anger, disappointment, pain, and brokenness to Him. He hears it all.

Remember, Psalm 109 was written by David. This is the great King David uttering unfiltered curses right in front of God. God listened to David’s raw, unedited heart. And what did God say about this same David later in Acts 13:22? “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart.” Brothers and sisters, go to God exactly as you are. When you feel filthy, pathetic, broke, or when you just want to hide from the world, go to Him with that exact heart. That honesty is the core of prayer. As David confesses in verse 22: “For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.”

[2. God Stands at the Right Hand of the Needy (v. 26-31)]

What gives us the confidence to approach God with such transparent, unfiltered honesty? It is the solid truth that God stands right beside the brokenhearted. Look at verse 31:

“For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.”

The reason we can empty our chaotic hearts before God is because we fundamentally trust that He takes our side. Romans 8:31 boldly asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Psalm 118:6 declares, “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can mere mortals do to me?” We see this same unshakeable confidence in today’s text as well. Verse 28 says, “Though they curse, may you bless.” What happens when God blesses? “When they attack they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice.” Amen!

If we truly believe that God is on our side and that He will personally vindicate us against our accusers, then what ultimately matters? Is it the fact that people are cursing us, or is it the fact that the Sovereign Lord is blessing us? Those who maliciously curse us will face ultimate shame when they rise up, but we, as His servants, will rejoice. Why? Because the Almighty God stands right beside our poor, needy, and broken lives.

How can we be so sure of this? How can we have this absolute certainty? We find this assurance when we deeply realize who God is. Who is our God? He is the One who possesses a supreme name, worthy of eternal praise. For His own name's sake, He promises to treat us—His servants—with goodness.

And even more vital than His name is the character of His love: God’s love is unwavering and covenantal. It is Hesed—an eternal, steadfast, unchanging love. He loves you with that exact quality of love. That is why David pleads in verse 21: “But you, Sovereign Lord, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.” David possessed a rock-solid faith that "God will act." He could hold onto this faith because he intimately knew God's unchanging love and kindness. Knowing this divine love allowed him to passionately confess God as his personal God. Verse 26 reads, “Help me, Lord my God; save me according to your unfailing love.” The Most High God, the Creator of the entire universe, is your God. He is the One who stands at your right hand to rescue you when you are at your lowest.

[Conclusion: Rely on the Unchanging Love]

In conclusion, God loves you deeply. He is never closer to you than when you are at your weakest and most vulnerable. Stop trying to fake your emotions before Him. Pour out your everything to Him; come into His presence exactly as you are. God will hear your raw prayers.

Hold fast to His unchanging, unfailing love. When you serve God as your Lord, He will protect your dignity and deliver you from the curses of your enemies for His glorious name's sake. Let us fully rely on the Lord who stands right beside the brokenhearted, and let us come before Him in prayer.

Let us pray.
