90:1 주여 주는 대대에 우리의 거처가 되셨나이다

90:2 산이 생기기 전, 땅과 세계도 주께서 조성하시기 전 곧 영원부터 영원까지 주는 하나님이시니이다

[A prayer of Moses the man of God.]

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place

    throughout all generations.

2 Before the mountains were born

    or you brought forth the whole world,

    from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

90:3 주께서 사람을 티끌로 돌아가게 하시고 말씀하시기를 너희 인생들은 돌아가라 하셨사오니

90:4 주의 목전에는 천 년이 지나간 어제 같으며 밤의 한 순간 같을 뿐임이니이다

90:5 주께서 그들을 홍수처럼 쓸어가시나이다 그들은 잠깐 자는 것 같으며 아침에 돋는 풀 같으니이다

90:6 풀은 아침에 꽃이 피어 자라다가 저녁에는 시들어 마르나이다

3 You turn people back to dust,

    saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”

4 A thousand years in your sight

    are like a day that has just gone by,

    or like a watch in the night.

5 Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death—

    they are like the new grass of the morning:

6 In the morning it springs up new,

    but by evening it is dry and withered.

90:7 우리는 주의 노에 소멸되며 주의 분내심에 놀라나이다

90:8 주께서 우리의 죄악을 주의 앞에 놓으시며 우리의 은밀한 죄를 주의 얼굴 빛 가운데에 두셨사오니

90:9 우리의 모든 날이 주의 분노 중에 지나가며 우리의 평생이 순식간에 다하였나이다

90:10 우리의 연수가 칠십이요 강건하면 팔십이라도 그 연수의 자랑은 수고와 슬픔뿐이요 신속히 가니 우리가 날아가나이다

90:11 누가 주의 노여움의 능력을 알며 누가 주의 진노의 두려움을 알리이까

90:12 우리에게 우리 날 계수함을 가르치사 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서

7 We are consumed by your anger

    and terrified by your indignation.

8 You have set our iniquities before you,

    our secret sins in the light of your presence.

9 All our days pass away under your wrath;

    we finish our years with a moan.

10 Our days may come to seventy years,

    or eighty, if our strength endures;

yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,

    for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

11 If only we knew the power of your anger!

    Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.

12 Teach us to number our days,

    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

90:13 여호와여 돌아오소서 언제까지니이까 주의 종들을 불쌍히 여기소서

90:14 아침에 주의 인자하심이 우리를 만족하게 하사 우리를 일생 동안 즐겁고 기쁘게 하소서

90:15 우리를 괴롭게 하신 날수대로와 우리가 화를 당한 연수대로 우리를 기쁘게 하소서

90:16 주께서 행하신 일을 주의 종들에게 나타내시며 주의 영광을 그들의 자손에게 나타내소서

13 Relent, Lord! How long will it be?

    Have compassion on your servants.

14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love,

    that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,

    for as many years as we have seen trouble.

16 May your deeds be shown to your servants,

    your splendor to their children.

90:17 주 우리 하나님의 은총을 우리에게 내리게 하사 우리의 손이 행한 일을 우리에게 견고하게 하소서 우리의 손이 행한 일을 견고하게 하소서

17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;

    establish the work of our hands for us—

    yes, establish the work of our hands.

                총 150편에 달하는 시편은 크게 5개의 책으로 나뉘어있습니다. 그래서 오늘의 본문을 개역개정 성경으로 보시면 ‘제4권’이라고 적혀 있는 것을 보실 수 있습니다. 시편 90편은 제4권의 서두로서 “하나님의 사람 모세의 기도”라는 유일한 제목을 가지고 있지요. 그러나 이 제목은 단순히 이 시편이 모세에 의해 지어졌다는 것 보다는 하나님 앞에서 이스라엘을 중보하였던 모세의 관점으로 시를 읽도록 하게하는 하나의 장치라고 보시면 좋을 것 같습니다. 죄로 인해 하나님의 진노 아래에 있는 공동체에게 진정 중요한 것이 무엇인지를 다시금 일깨워주며 하나님의 긍휼하심을 구하는 것이 본문의 내용이지요. 오늘은 “티끌 같은 삶에 깃든 지혜”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: The Perspective of the Intercessor]

The Book of Psalms, totaling 150 chapters, is divided into five main books. Today’s passage marks the beginning of "Book IV." Psalm 90 holds a unique title: “A Prayer of Moses, the Man of God.” Rather than simply identifying the author, this title serves as a lens through which we should read—the perspective of Moses, who interceded for Israel before God. The core of this text is a plea for God’s mercy, reminding a community suffering under His wrath due to sin of what truly matters. Today, I want to share a message titled: “Wisdom Dwelling in a Life of Dust.”

                먼저 이 시편이 쓰여진 배경은 공동체가 어떤 어려움을 겪고 있기 때문인 것 같습니다. 13절, “여호와여 돌아오소서 언제까지니이까? 주의 종들을 불쌍히 여기소서.” 15절, “우리를 괴롭게 하신 날수대로와 우리가 화를 당한 연수대로 우리를 기쁘게 하소서.” 모두 이들이 지금 어떤 어려움에 처해 있다는 것을 간접적으로 말해주고 있지요. 게다가 본 시편 전체에서 일관되게 드러나는 주제 중 하나는 바로 이들이 주님 앞에 죄를 지었으며 하나님의 분노 가운데 있다는 것입니다. 그렇다면 이렇게 하나님의 심판 중에 있는 공동체를 위해 중보자는 어떻게 기도하고 있을까요?

                먼저는 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 고백합니다. 1절과 2절은 하나님이야 말로 우리가 머물 수 있는 안식처이며 그 하나님은 영원한 분이심을 고백하고 있지요. 인간에게는 영원해 보이는 거대한 산맥들 조차 하나님에 의해 낳음을 받은 존재들입니다.이는 창조주이신 하나님과 만들어진 피조물 사이의 건널 수 없는 간격을 선명하게 보여주는 것이지요. 우리가 인식하는 시간이라는 개념 밖에서 존재하시는 분이 바로 하나님이신데 그 하나님이 우리가 머물 안식처라는 것입니다. 그분이야 말로 영원한 안식처이신 것이지요.

                그런데 그런 영원하신 하나님 앞에 우리는 어떤 존재입니까? 본문은 우리를 티끌과 같은 존재라고 말하고 있습니다. 여기서 티끌이란 사람을 빚으셨던 흙을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 으깨어지고 잘게 부서진 먼지를 말합니다. 사막의 바위가 바람과 모래에 쓸려 결국 스러지지 않습니까? 마찬가지입니다. 인생이라는 바람과 모래 가운데 깎이고 떨어져 나가며 잘게 부서지는 우리의 연약함과 삶의 덧없음을 표현하고 있는 것이지요. 그렇다면 우리는 영원한 존재입니까? 아니지요. 우리는 영원하신 하나님 앞에 지극히 짧은 순간만을 살아가는 존재입니다. 이런 우리의 연약함과 순간성을 말하고 있는 것이 3-6절의 말씀이지요.

[1. The Eternal Refuge vs. The Pulverized Dust]

The background of this psalm suggests a community in deep distress.

• Verse 13: "Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants!" * Verse 15: "Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us." These verses indirectly tell us they were facing great hardship, rooted in the consistent theme of their sin and God’s righteous anger. How does the intercessor pray for a community under such judgment?

First, he confesses who God is. Verses 1 and 2 declare that God is our dwelling place and that He is eternal. Even the massive mountains, which seem eternal to us, were "brought forth" by Him. This highlights the insurmountable gap between the Creator and the created. God exists outside the very concept of time, yet He is our refuge—our eternal home.

But who are we before such an eternal God? The text describes us as "dust." In this context, "dust" does not refer to the clay from which man was molded, but rather to crushed, pulverized powder. Just as desert rocks are eventually worn away by wind and sand, we are fragile and transient, eroded by the winds of life. We are not eternal; we live only a fleeting moment before the Everlasting God. Verses 3–6 vividly portray this frailty and transience.

                그렇기에 우리는 하나님의 진노를 감당할 수 없습니다. 주님의 진노 앞에서 우리는 한 순간도 견디지 못하고 스러질 뿐인 존재입니다. 그런데 더 두려운 것은 주님께서는 우리의 가장 은밀한 죄 까지도 빛 가운데 다 낱낱이 드러내신다는 것입니다. 만약 주님께서 우리를 긍휼히 여기지 않으신다면 우리가 어떻게 주 앞에 설 수 있겠습니까? 우리는 너무나 순간적인 삶을 사는 존재여서 영원하신 주님께서 진노하시면 그 진노가 채 그치기도 전에 우리의 삶이 모두 지나가버릴까 두려운 것입니다. “누가 그런 주님의 노여움의 능력을 알며 누가 그런 주님의 진노의 두려움을 알겠습니까?”

                그래서 중보자는 구합니다. 12절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “우리에게 우리 날 계수함을 가르치사 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서” 아멘. 중보자는 우리의 날들이 유한하다는 사실을 하나님의 관점에서 깨닫게 해달라고 간구하고 있습니다. 우리네 인생이 끝이 있다는 것을 기억하고 그 현실을 마주해야 한다는 것입니다. 그것이 우리가 하나님의 관점으로 우리의 삶을 보게 되는 것이고, 바로 그때에서야 지혜가 우리 마음 속으로 들어오는 것입니다. 우리는 우리가 마치 영원할 것 처럼 삽니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 서는 그 날이 마치 오지 않을 것 처럼 산다는 말입니다. 그러나 우리의 삶은 마치 티끌과 같고 아침에 피어 자라다가 저녁에 시들어 마르는 꽃과 같습니다. 우리의 평생이 순식간에 다한다는 말입니다. 누구에게나 하나님 앞에 서는 그 날이 옵니다. 그 날은 순식간에 옵니다. 그것을 기억할 때에 우리는 비로소 지혜로워지고 하나님 앞에 겸손하여지는 것입니다.

[2. The Weight of Wrath and the Plea for Wisdom]

Because of our frailty, we cannot withstand God’s wrath. We are consumed in an instant. What is more terrifying is that God sets our most "secret sins" in the light of His presence. If He does not look upon us with mercy, how could we ever stand? Our lives are so brief that if the Eternal Lord remains angry, our entire existence would vanish before His wrath even subsided. As the psalmist asks, "Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?"

Therefore, the intercessor makes a request in Verse 12:

"So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom."

He asks God to help us realize the finitude of our days from His perspective. We must face the reality that our lives have an end. When we view our lives through God’s eyes, only then does true wisdom enter our hearts. We often live as if we are eternal—as if the day we stand before God will never come. But our lives are like dust, like grass that flourishes in the morning but fades and withers by evening. When we remember that the end comes in the blink of an eye, we finally become wise and humble before Him.

                중보자는 또한 구합니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 돌아와 주시기를, 이렇게 티끌과 같은 우리의 삶을 불쌍히 여겨 주시기를, 아침마다 새로운 하나님의 신실하신 사랑으로 우리를 만족케하여 주시기를, 우리가 그동안 인생에서 고생한 날 수대로 우리를 기쁘게 하여 주시기를, 그리고 우리 뿐만 아니라 우리의 자손들까지 주님의 역사를 이루심과 주님의 영광을 보게 되기를, 그는 구합니다. 그리고 그가 마지막으로 구하는 것은 바로 하나님 당신의 존재의 아름다움입니다. 마치 은총과도 같이 하나님의 아름다움이 우리 가운데 내려서 우리로 그 아름다움 안에 거하게 해달라는 것입니다. 찰나와 같은 우리의 사역은 영원한 하나님의 아름다움 안에 있을 때에 비로소 영원한 의미를 지닙니다. 이것이 오늘 본문의 하나님의 사람, 모세의 기도인 것입니다.

[3. The Beauty of God That Makes Us Firm]

The intercessor continues to plead: that God would return to them, have compassion on their "dust-like" lives, satisfy them each morning with His steadfast love, and grant them joy equal to the days of their suffering. He prays that not only they, but also their children, would see God’s work and His glory.

Finally, he prays for the beauty of God Himself. He asks that the "favor" (beauty/grace) of the Lord would rest upon us, allowing us to dwell within that beauty. Our momentary labor gains eternal significance only when it is enveloped in the eternal beauty of God. This is the heart of the prayer of Moses, the man of God.

                말씀을 맺습니다. 티끌과도 같이 가볍고 순간적인 우리의 삶은 우리의 안식처 되시는 영원하신 하나님 안에 거할 때 비로소 의미를 지닙니다. 우리가 우리의 날을 계수하는 지혜를 가지고 하나님의 뜻을 겸손히 따른다면 우리는 하나님의 영원한 아름다움이 우리에게 내리는 것을 경험할 것입니다. 그 때에 우리의 작은 수고가 영원히 견고해지는 역사가 일어날 것입니다. 그 지혜를 구하시면서 다함께 하나님 앞에 나아가시겠습니다.

[Conclusion: Making the Fleeting Eternal]

In conclusion: our lives, as light and fleeting as dust, find true meaning only when we dwell within our eternal refuge, God. When we have the wisdom to number our days and humbly follow His will, we experience His eternal beauty descending upon us. It is then that a miracle occurs—our small, fragile efforts become "established" and firm forever. Let us seek that wisdom together as we go before the Lord in prayer.
