[The Guards’ Report]

11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13 telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

28:16 열한 제자가 갈릴리에 가서 예수께서 지시하신 산에 이르러

28:17 예수를 뵈옵고 경배하나 아직도 의심하는 사람들이 있더라

28:18 예수께서 나아와 말씀하여 이르시되 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니

28:20 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼찌어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라

[The Great Commission]

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

마태복음의 마지막 장인 28장 전반부(1~10절)에서 반복적으로 등장하는 명령이 있습니다. 무서워하지 말라! 입니다. 사람들이 무서워하는 것이 많이 있지만, 그 중에서도 가장 무서운 것은 사람이 죽은 시체일 것입니다. 그런데 그것보다 더 무서운 것은 그 시체가 일어나는 것입니다. 죽었던 예수님은 아예 살아나 무덤에서 걸어 나오고, 말씀도 하시고, 그 형상이 번개와 같은 천사가 무덤을 막았던 돌 위에 앉아 말을 하니, 여인들도 군인들도 어찌 두렵지 않겠습니까? 그런데 천사도 예수님도 나타나 무서워하지 말라 고 명령합니다. 왜냐하면 예수님이 이미 사망 권세를 이기셨기 때문에 더 이상 죽음에 대해서 무서워 할 이유가 없는 것입니다. 까짓 것 죽기 밖에 더하겠어! 라고 말하는데, 이제는 죽어도 살아나니 무엇이 두렵겠습니까?

In the first half of Matthew 28 (verses 1–10), there is a command that appears repeatedly: "Do not be afraid!" Humans fear many things, but perhaps the most frightening is a corpse. Even more terrifying, however, would be seeing that corpse rise. Jesus, who was dead, came back to life and walked out of the tomb; He spoke, and an angel with an appearance like lightning sat upon the stone that had sealed the grave. How could the women and the soldiers not be terrified?

Yet, both the angel and Jesus command them not to be afraid. Because Jesus has already overcome the power of death, there is no longer any reason to fear it. We often say, "At worst, I'll just die!" but now that we rise even after death, what is there to fear?

시체도둑설 (11~15절)

11절에서 15절은 어제 부활주일 설교에서 설명드린 내용입니다. 마태복음이 쓰여진 A.D. 50~70년대에도 예수님의 시신을 제자들이 도둑질 해 놓고 부활했다고 거짓말한 것이라는 루머가 있었습니다. 150년경 초대교회 교부인 저스틴이 쓴 트리포와의 대화에도 동일한 이야기가 나옵니다.

소위 도둑설이라고 불리는 루머인데, 그 기원을 마태가 정확하게 밝히고 있습니다. 바리새인과 서기관들이 자신들의 입으로 자신들이 저지른 만행을 밝힌 것입니다. 그들이 병사들을 시켜 철저하게 무덤을 지킨 것이 오히려 예수님의 부활에 대한 정확한 증거가 되어버렸습니다. 그렇게 지키는데 어찌 겁쟁이 제자들이 예수님의 시신을 훔칠 수 있겠습니까? 그들은 어쩔 수 없이 예수님의 부활의 증인이 되어버린 경비병들을 돈으로 매수합니다. 하지만 진실을 감출 수는 없습니다. 분명히 공회원들이나 병사들 중에서 말이 새어 나왔습니다. 마태가 이렇게 정황을 정확하게 아는 것을 보니 분명합니다.  

바리새인들과 대제사장들이 참으로 딱합니다. 빈 무덤을 보고는 회개를 해야 하는 것이 옳은데, 끝까지 눈 가리고 아옹입니다. 자신들의 죄를 합리화하는 것은 끝이 없습니다. 그들은 하나님의 심판을 도저히 피할 길이 없습니다. 마지막 기회까지 이렇게 차버렸으니 말입니다. 같은 공회원들이지만 예수님의 시신을 거두어 장례를 치룬 요셉이나 니고데모와는 전혀 다른 길을 가니 그저 안타까울 뿐입니다.

1. The Theory of the Stolen Body (Verses 11–15)

Verses 11 through 15 cover what was shared in yesterday’s Easter Sunday sermon. Even between A.D. 50 and 70, when the Gospel of Matthew was written, rumors persisted that the disciples had stolen Jesus’ body and lied about the resurrection. This same story appears in Dialogue with Trypho, written by the early Church Father Justin Martyr around A.D. 150.

Matthew clearly identifies the origin of this "Theft Theory." Ironically, the Pharisees and elders revealed their own atrocities through their own mouths. Their decision to have soldiers strictly guard the tomb became definitive evidence of the resurrection. How could cowardly disciples steal a body under such heavy guard?

Faced with the truth, the leaders bribed the guards—who had involuntarily become witnesses to the resurrection—to lie. But truth cannot be hidden. Word clearly leaked out from among the council members or the soldiers, which is why Matthew knows the circumstances so precisely.

The Pharisees and chief priests are truly pitiable. Seeing the empty tomb should have led them to repentance, but they chose to "cover their eyes and meow" (deceive themselves). There is no end to justifying one's sins. Having kicked away their final opportunity, they cannot escape God’s judgment. It is tragic to see them take a path so different from Joseph of Arimathea or Nicodemus, who were also council members but chose to care for Jesus’ body.

너희와 함상 함께 있으리라 (16~20절)

사망 권세를 이기신 것과 더불어 우리가 세상이나 죽음, 어둠의 권세를 무서워하지 않을 수 있는 근거가 하나 더 있습니다. 그것은 20절의 약속입니다. 예수님은 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라(20) 약속하십니다. 이 약속만큼 우리가 모든 두려움을 물리칠 수 있는 확실한 근거가 있을까요?

여러분! 큰 교회에서 혼자 기도해 보신 경험이 있으신가요? 아니면 어둔 밤 숲 속 길을 혼자 걸어보신 경험이 있으신가요? 혼자는 그렇게 두려운데, 이상하게 누군가 한 명만 함께 해도 그 두려움이 반감합니다.

같은 인간이 동행해도 그런데 하물며 예수님이 우리와 함께 하신다니, 무엇이 두렵겠습니까!

주님은 특별히 승천하신 후 성령을 보내시어, 어느 시대, 어느 곳에서든 모든 주의 자녀들과 임마누엘 함께 하시겠다는 약속을 지키십니다. 문제는 그 분을 내가 느껴야 하는 것입니다! 인생에서 왜 두려움을 느낍니까? 함께 하시는 예수님을 느끼지 못하기 때문 아니겠습니까? 아무리 허공에 시그널이 많이 있어도, 라디오의 주파수를 맞추지 않으면 소리를 잡을 수 없습니다.

마찬가지입니다. 기도로 말씀으로 우리의 영적인 주파수를 조정하지 않으면 주님의 함께 하심을 느낄 수 없습니다. 그래서 두려운 것입니다. 그 주님의 손을 붙잡고 느끼는 자녀 되기 바랍니다 .

2. I Am With You Always (Verses 16–20)

Beyond the victory over death, there is one more reason we do not have to fear the world, death, or the powers of darkness. It is the promise found in verse 20:

Is there any surer foundation than this promise to dispel all our fears? Have you ever prayed alone in a large church or walked through a dark forest at night? Solitude can be frightening, but strangely, the presence of just one other person halves that fear. If the companionship of a fellow human does that, how much more should we be emboldened by the fact that Jesus is with us!

After His ascension, the Lord sent the Holy Spirit to fulfill His promise of Immanuel—to be with all His children in every era and every place. The issue is whether we feel His presence. Why do we feel fear in life? Isn't it because we fail to sense Jesus with us? No matter how many signals are in the air, you cannot catch the sound if your radio isn't tuned to the right frequency.

Similarly, if we do not tune our "spiritual frequency" through prayer and the Word, we cannot sense the Lord’s presence. That is why we fear. I pray you become children of God who take hold of the Lord’s hand and feel His presence.

마지막으로 18~20절을 살펴 보겠습니다. 이 구절은 그 유명한 지상대위임령 입니다. 이 유언과 같은 말씀은 제자나 사역자의 사역에 디렉션이 됩니다. 또한 기독교교육학의 모티프가 되는 구절이기도 합니다.

이 구절은 세가지 동사 명령으로 구성됩니다.

1) 가라

2) 세례를 주라

3) 가르쳐 지키게 하라

그런데 이 세가지 명령은 본 동사인 제자 삼으라에 걸립니다. 그러니까 가서 제자 삼으라, 세례를 주어 제자 삼으라, 가르쳐 지키게 하여 제자 삼으라 는 것입니다. 그러므로 제자화야말로 우리의 인생의 가장 근본적인 목표입니다. 그냥 전도만 하는 것이 아니라, 주님의 제자를 재생산해내야 합니다.

그러므로 우리는 하나님이 보내시는 곳으로 먼저 가야 합니다.

그곳은 나의 가정이고, 공동체이고, 직장이고, 내가 속한 지역사회입니다.

그리고는 가서 세례를 주어야 합니다.

이것은 예수 그리스도를 구주로 고백하는 신앙을 갖도록 하는 것을 의미합니다.

복음을 전해야 합니다. 가정에서, 구역에서, 어떤 모임이든지 복음을 나눠야 합니다.

마지막으로 가르쳐 지키게 해야 합니다.

하나님의 말씀을 지속적으로 가르치고, 지속적으로 지키게 하는 것입니다. 기독교 교육은 그저 지식을 전달하는 것이 아닙니다. 그 말씀을 실제로 실천하도록 계속 동기부여를 하고, 관찰을 하고, 재교육하는 것입니다. 철저하게 작은 예수가 되도록 지속적으로 훈련하고 교육해야 합니다.

3. The Great Commission

Finally, let’s look at verses 18–20. This is the famous Great Commission. These final words serve as the direction for every disciple and minister. They are also the motif for Christian education. This passage consists of three command-verbs:

1. Go

2. Baptize

3. Teach them to observe

Crucially, these three commands are tied to the main verb: "Make disciples." It means: Go and make disciples, baptize to make disciples, and teach them to obey so that they become disciples. Therefore, discipleship is the fundamental goal of our lives. It is not just about evangelism; we must reproduce disciples of the Lord.

• We must first go where God sends us—our homes, our communities, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods.

• We must baptize, which means leading others to profess faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. We must share the Gospel in every gathering.

• We must teach them to observe. Christian education isn't just about transferring knowledge; it is about motivating, observing, and re-educating so that the Word is actually practiced. We must train others to become "little Christs."

하나님은 우리에게 막중한 미션을 주셨습니다. 어찌 보면 매우 두렵고 어려운 일입니다. 그러나 우리는 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 먼저 예수님이 무서워 말라고 하셨기 때문입니다. 그냥 무서워하지 말라고만 하신 것이 아니라 실제로 우리와 동행하시는 임마누엘이 되셨습니다.

내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 약속하셨습니다. 주님은 미쁘신 분입니다. 약속에 신실하신 분이라는 말입니다. 반드시 약속을 지키십니다. 무엇이 두렵습니까?

우리가 두려워 해야 하는 것은 삶의 문제와 죽음이 아니라, 예수님이 함께 하심을 느끼지 못하는 우리의 무딘 영성입니다. 어떤 위기와 어려움, 두려운 상황에서도 주님이 함께 하시는 것만 느낀다면 그 어떤 문제도 문제가 아닙니다. 이제 우리와 함께 하시는 임마누엘의 은혜가 시작되었습니다. 그 주님의 은혜를 찬양합시다!

God has given us a momentous mission. In some ways, it is a daunting and difficult task. However, we have no need to fear. Jesus told us not to be afraid, and He didn't just leave it at words—He became Immanuel, dwelling with us.

He promised, "I am with you always, to the end of the age." Our Lord is faithful. He keeps His promises. What is there to fear? What we should truly fear is not the problems of life or death, but our own dull spirituality that fails to sense Jesus’ presence. If we can only sense Him with us, no crisis or difficulty is truly a "problem."

The grace of Immanuel has begun. Let us praise the grace of the Lord who is with us!
