The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

7:28 예수께서 이 말씀을 마치시매 무리들이 그 가르치심에 놀라니

7:29 이는 그 가르치시는 것이 권위 있는 자와 같고 그들의 서기관들과 같지 아니함일러라

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

                  오늘의 말씀은 예수님의 산상수훈의 마지막을 장식하는 부분입니다. 지난 주 화요일부터 시작한 산상수훈은 팔복의 말씀부터 시작하여 어제 말씀인 황금률까지 하늘 나라의 백성들이 이 땅에서 어떻게 하늘의 나라를 이루며 살아가야 하는지에 대해서 말씀해주셨지요. 그 대미를 장식하는 반석 위에 집을 짓는 비유. 그 주인공인 지혜로운 사람을 예수님께서는 이렇게 설명하십니다. 24절입니다. “그러므로 누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는,” “그러므로,” 앞에서 하신 모든 말씀의 결론입니다. “누구든지,” “나의 이 말을 듣고,” “행하는 자는.” 오늘은 “내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자”라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Today’s passage marks the grand finale of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Since we began this journey, we have traveled from the Beatitudes to the Golden Rule, learning how the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven should live and manifest that Kingdom here on earth.

Jesus concludes this masterpiece with the parable of the house built on the rock. He describes the protagonist of this story—the wise man—in verse 24:

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice..."

Notice the keywords: "Therefore" (the conclusion of all He has said), "Everyone," "Hears these words," and "Puts them into practice." Today, I want to share a message titled: "Those Who Do the Will of My Father."

                  오늘 말씀은 “좁은 문으로 들어가라”는 명령으로 시작합니다. 그 문은 어떤 문입니까? 14절입니다. “생명으로 인도하는 문” 입니다. 그런데 그 “문은 좁고 길이 협착하여” 라고 말씀하십니다. 여기서 길이 협착하다는 것은 원문에 ‘좁다’ 라는 공간적인 의미 뿐만 아니라 누군가에 의해 어려움을 겪게 되는 상황을 암시하는 의미 또한 지니고 있습니다. 우리는 팔복에서 이와 비슷한 말씀을 본 적이 있지요. 5:10. “의를 위하여 박해를 받은 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이라.” 11-12절도 마찬가지의 말씀을 하고 계시지요. 그래서일까요, 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 들어가는 자가 많은데 좁은 문은 ‘들어가는 자’가 적은게 아니라 ‘찾는 자’가 적다고 말씀하십니다. 그 문은 찾아야 하는 것이지요. 그런데 어제 말씀에 예수님께서 무어라고 말씀하셨습니까? 7:8, “찾으라 그리하면 찾아낼 것이요 문을 두드리라 그리하면 너희에게 열릴 것이니” 우리를 생명으로 인도하는 문이 누구입니까? 예수님이시지요. 우리는 예수님을 찾고 예수님이라는 문으로 들어가야합니다. 그렇다면 생명으로 인도하는 예수님이라는 문으로 들어간다는 것은 무슨 뜻일까요?

1. Finding the Narrow Gate (Verses 13-14)

The message begins with a command: "Enter through the narrow gate." What kind of gate is this? Verse 14 tells us it is the "gate that leads to life." However, Jesus warns that "small is the gate and narrow is the road." In the original Greek, the word for "narrow" (thlibó) regarding the road doesn't just mean a small physical space; it implies a state of being "pressed" or "troubled"—suggesting a path of hardship or persecution. We saw this in the Beatitudes (5:10): "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Perhaps that is why Jesus says that while many enter the broad gate to destruction, only a few "find" the narrow gate. It is a gate that must be sought. But remember what Jesus said in yesterday’s text (7:8): "Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." Jesus Himself is that door. To enter the gate called Jesus means to intentionally seek Him and embrace His way of life, even when it is "narrow" and difficult.

                  예수님께서는 거짓 선지자를 삼가라는 말씀으로 다음 말씀을 시작하십니다. 여기서 삼가라는 말은 ‘주의를 기울여서 자세히 살펴라’ 라는 말씀입니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 양의 옷을 입고 우리가 다가가지 않아도 그들이 우리에게 다가오기 때문입니다. 그들은 우리와 같은 모습, 또는 더 나은 모습을 하고 있습니다. 이들을 설명하는 것이 22절이지요. “주의 이름으로 선지자 노릇하며 주의 이름으로 귀신을 쫓아내며 주의 이름으로 많은 권능을 행하”는 사람들입니다. 우리는 그들의 영적인 모습, 외적인 모습으로는 그들이 양인지 늑대인지 구분할 수 없습니다. 그렇다면 앞에서 ‘주의를 기울여서 자세히 살피라’고 하셨는데 무엇을 살펴야 할까요? 16절과 20절은 동일한 말씀을 반복하십니다. 바로 “그들의 열매로 그들을 알리라” 라고 말씀하십니다. 17절, “이와 같이 좋은 나무마다 아름다운 열매를 맺고 못된 나무가 나쁜 열매를 맺나니” 아, 그러면 아름다운 열매가 있는지 없는지 보면 알겠구나! 그런데 그 아름다운 열매란 무엇일까요? 21절의 말씀은 그것이 바로 “하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 것”이라고 말씀하십니다. “나더러 주여 주여 하는 자마다 다 천국에 들어갈 것이 아니요 다만 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자라야 들어가리라.” 하나님께서 찾으시는 것은 바깥으로 드러나는 영적인 모습이나 종교적인 행함이 아니었습니다. 하나님께서는 그들에게 밝히 말씀하십니다. “불법을 행하는 자들아 내게서 떠나가라.” ‘불법을 행하는 자’의 반대말을 오늘 본문은 그것이 ‘하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻대로 행하는 자’라고 말씀하고 계십니다. 그렇다면 하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 어떻게 알 수 있을까요?

2. Recognized by Their Fruit (Verses 15-23)

Jesus continues with a warning: "Watch out for false prophets." To "watch out" means to pay close attention and examine carefully. These prophets are dangerous because they come in "sheep’s clothing." They look like us, talk like us, and might even seem "holier" than us.

Verse 22 describes them as people who “prophesied in your name... drove out demons and performed many miracles.” We cannot distinguish the sheep from the wolves by their spiritual gifts or outward religious appearance. So, what should we look for?

In verses 16 and 20, Jesus repeats: "By their fruit you will recognize them." What is this "beautiful fruit"? Verse 21 clarifies it: "Doing the will of my Father who is in heaven." > "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven."

God is not looking for external religious performance. To those who perform miracles but neglect the heart of God, He says, "Away from me, you evildoers!" (v. 23). In this context, the opposite of an "evildoer" is "the one who does the will of the Father."

                  바로 예수님의 말씀을 통해서입니다. 예수님께서는 위의 모든 말씀을 하시고 결론을 내리십니다. “그러므로, 누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는” 무슨 말씀입니까? ‘예수님의 이 말씀을 듣고 행하는 것이 곧 하늘에 계신 아버지의 뜻을 듣고 행하는 것’ 이라는 것입니다. 예수님께서는 ‘누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고’ 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 여기서 ‘나의 이 말’ 이란 지난 수요일부터 우리가 함께 묵상하였던 예수님의 산상수훈을 가르킵니다. 앞에서 제가 질문했었습니다. 생명으로 인도하는 예수님이라는 문으로 들어간다는 것은 무슨 뜻일까요? 그것은 바로 예수님의 이 말씀, 산상수훈을 듣고 행하는 것입니다. 그것이 곧 아름다운 열매를 맺는 것이라는 것입니다. 예수님은 또한 경고를 하십니다. 26절 “나의 이 말을 듣고 행하지 아니하는 자는” 27절 “무너져 그 무너짐이 심하니라.” 반석 위에 집을 짓는 사람과 모래 위에 집을 짓는 사람의 차이는 바로 이것입니다. “나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는자” 와 “나의 이 말을 듣고 행하지 아니하는 자.” 바로 행함에 있는 것입니다.

3. Hearing and Doing: The Wise Builder (Verses 24-27)

How can we know the will of the Heavenly Father? Through the words of Jesus. Jesus concludes: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice..." This means that hearing and practicing the teachings of Jesus is identical to hearing and doing the will of the Father. "These words of mine" refers to the entire Sermon on the Mount we have meditated on—from being poor in spirit to the Golden Rule.

The difference between the man who builds on the rock and the man who builds on sand is not their knowledge. Both heard the message. The difference lies solely in action. One put the words into practice; the other did not.

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 우리는 오늘 말씀을 보면서 좌절하기 쉽습니다. 생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 고난과 어려움의 길이라 적은 사람 만이 찾는 길이라면 과연 내가 그 길을 걸을 수 있을까? 그러나 예수님께서는 24절에 “그러므로” 라고 당신의 산상수훈을 요약하시며 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “누구든지.” “누구든지 나의 이 말을 듣고 행하는 자는.” 누구든지 라는 말은 모두를 포함하는 말입니다. 내가 연약하여도, 할 수 없을 것만 같아도, 또 자격이 없어도, 예수님께서는 우리 모두를 부르십니다. 우리가 해야 할 것은 예수님의 산상수훈의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 것입니다. 위선 없는 헌신과 사랑으로 이 땅 위에 하늘 나라의 영역을 확장하는 자. 그것이 예수님의 산상수훈을 통해 말씀하시는 하나님 아버지의 뜻인 줄 믿습니다. 그 뜻대로 행하는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

[Conclusion]

It is easy to feel discouraged when reading today’s passage. We might wonder, "If the gate is so narrow and the road so hard, can I ever truly walk it?" But look at verse 24 again. Jesus begins His summary with the word "Everyone" (or "Whoever"). This invitation is inclusive. It includes the weak, the failing, and those who feel unqualified. Jesus is calling all of us.

What we are called to do is simple yet profound: Hear His words and put them into practice. To be a people who expand the Kingdom of God through sincere devotion, mercy, and love—that is the Father's will. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be the wise builders who hear His heart and live it out in your daily lives. Amen.
