17:14 요셉 자손이 여호수아에게 말하여 이르되 여호와께서 지금까지 내게 복을 주시므로 내가 큰 민족이 되었거늘 당신이 나의 기업을 위하여 한 제비, 한 분깃으로만 내게 주심은 어찌함이니이까 하니

14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one allotment and one portion for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”

17:15 여호수아가 그들에게 이르되 네가 큰 민족이 되므로 에브라임 산지가 네게 너무 좁을진대 브리스 족속과 르바임 족속의 땅 삼림에 올라가서 스스로 개척하라 하니라

15 “If you are so numerous,” Joshua answered, “and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites.”

17:16 요셉 자손이 이르되 그 산지는 우리에게 넉넉하지도 못하고 골짜기 땅에 거주하는 모든 가나안 족속에게는 벧 스안과 그 마을들에 거주하는 자이든지 이스르엘 골짜기에 거주하는 자이든지 다 철 병거가 있나이다 하니

16 The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron, both those in Beth Shan and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”

17:17 여호수아가 다시 요셉의 족속 곧 에브라임과 므낫세에게 말하여 이르되 너는 큰 민족이요 큰 권능이 있은즉 한 분깃만 가질 것이 아니라

17:18 그 산지도 네 것이 되리니 비록 삼림이라도 네가 개척하라 그 끝까지 네 것이 되리라 가나안 족속이 비록 철 병거를 가졌고 강할지라도 네가 능히 그를 쫓아내리라 하였더라

17 But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh—“You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one allotment 18 but the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.”

여러분 착시현상 그림들 아시나요? 많이 유명해서 다들 한번씩은 보셨을텐데요. 한 그림 속 어느 곳에 초점을 맞춰서 보느냐에 따라 그림이 다르게 해석되는 그림들이 있지요. 슥 보면 토끼같은데 조금 더 바라보면 오리 같은 그림도 있구요. 슥 보면 어떤 할머니 같은데 다시 자세히 보면 젊은 아가씨 뒷모습 같은 사진도 있습니다. 이런 착시현상 그림들이 재밌는 이유는 같은 그림을 보고 서로 다르게 해석하는 사람들의 반응차이 때문이겠죠. 이렇게 착시현상이 일어나는 이유는 시각이 아닌 뇌의 착각으로 인해 발생한다고 합니다. 이는 빛으로 받아들인 정보를 우리의 뇌가 처리하는 과정에서 단순히 받아들인 그 빛의 정보 자체만으로 받아들이는 것이 아니라, 뇌가 능동적으로 해석하기 때문인데요. 우리 뇌는 대상을 익숙한 방식으로 바라보려는 경향을 가지고 있기 때문에 똑같은 대상이라도 관찰자의 관점에 따라 바뀌게 해석될 수 있다고 하네요. 제가 이 착시현상 그림들 얘기를 꺼낸 이유는 오늘 본문의 요셉 자손들이 앞서 살펴본 갈렙 또는 슬로브핫의 딸들과는 전혀 다른 반응을 하고 있기 때문입니다. 이들이 처한 상황은 같습니다. 지금 이스라엘 공동체는 모두 동일하게 약속의 땅을 기업으로 분배받고 있습니다. 그리고 이 받은 은혜를 풍성히 누리기 위해서는 순종과 헌신으로 정복 전쟁을 완수해야 합니다. 그러나 지금 요셉 자손은 여호수아를 찾아와 하나님께 받은 기업에 만족하지 못하고 불평을 합니다. 그리고 여호수아와의 대화 가운데 이들의 내면 깊이 담겨 있는 두려움을 발견하게 됩니다. 불평과 두려움… 우리가 하나님의 은혜를 못 누리게 만드는 단골 메뉴들입니다. 함께 요셉 자손들의 반응을 살펴보며 우리가 가져야 하는 자세를 알아봅시다.

Have you ever seen those famous optical illusion pictures? Some people look at the exact same drawing and see a rabbit, while others insist it's a duck. In another picture, one person sees an old woman, but someone else sees a young lady. Scientists say these illusions happen not because of our eyes but because of how our brain interprets what it sees. Our brain processes incoming light through the lens of familiarity, assumptions, and habits— so the same picture can be interpreted in completely different ways. As I reflected on this, I realized that our spiritual vision can experience similar distortions. God may give us grace, opportunities, and promises… yet our hearts—clouded by complaint or fear—can interpret that same grace as a burden, threat, or disappointment. Today’s passage shows us exactly that dynamic. The descendants of Joseph look at the same promised land that Caleb and the daughters of Zelophehad received with faith. But their reaction is completely different. Their hearts distort what they see. Through their example, let us reflect on the attitudes that block us from experiencing God’s grace.

1.불평

요셉 자손이 여호수아를 찾아와서 말합니다. 14절을 좀 쉽게 읽어보자면 “도대체 왜 나에게 한 제비, 한 분깃만 준 것입니까? 나는 큰 민족입니다”라는 식의 뉘앙스입니다. 이 14절에서 우리는 ‘내게, 내가, 나의, 내게’와 같이 자기 중심적인 표현이 4번이나 나온 것을 봅니다. 이들이 ‘여호와께서 지금까지 내게 복을 주시므로’라고 표현을 한 것으로 볼 때 마치 하나님께 감사와 찬양을 올리는 듯 하지만 이들의 초점은 오히려 ‘내가 큰 민족이다’라는 자만심에 더욱 꽂혀있음을 봅니다. 헌데 이들이 스스로를 표현하는 ‘큰 민족’이란 표현을 한번 살펴볼 필요가 있습니다. 민수기 26장을 통해서 우리가 살펴볼 때 므낫세 지파와 에브라임 지파를 합친 요셉 지파의 숫자는 85,200명임을 알 수 있습니다. 그런데 사실 민수기 본문에서 므낫세 지파와 에브라임 지파의 수를 각각 알려주는데요. 므낫세 지파의 인구 수는 52,700명이고 에브라임 지파는 32,500명입니다. 이게 애매한 것이 무엇이냐 하면요. 85,200명 정말 많은 숫자의 사람입니다. 근데 중요한 것은 이들이 기업을 분배받을 때 각각 따로 받지 않았습니까? 유다 지파가 76,500명임을 감안할 때 각 지파의 규모는 사실 그렇게 크진 않습니다. 즉 비록 두 지파임에도 불구하고 ‘요셉 자손’이라는 한 족속으로 여호수아에게 나아와 불평을 하는 모습이 그들의 ‘한 족속이면서 두 지파’라는 혼란스러운 정체성을 잘 보여줍니다. 그리고 그들의 이러한 불평은 제비뽑기라는 하나님의 주권에 정면으로 불순종하는 죄를 범하였습니다.

1. Complaint

The descendants of Joseph come to Joshua and say—in simple terms from verse 14—“Why did you give us only one allotment and one portion? We are a numerous people.” In verse 14, the words me, my, mine, and to me appear four times. Although they seem to acknowledge God by saying “the Lord has blessed me so far,” their real focus is on their pride — “we are a great people.” But we need to examine what they mean by “a great people.” Numbers 26 tells us that the total number of Joseph’s tribes (Manasseh and Ephraim combined) is 85,200. That’s indeed a large number. But Manasseh and Ephraim each received their inheritance separately. Manasseh had 52,700 and Ephraim had 32,500. When compared to Judah, who had 76,500, each tribe individually is not as large as their boast suggests. Yet, even though they are two tribes, they come to Joshua as one clan — “Joseph’s descendants” — and complain. This shows their confused identity as “one clan yet two tribes.” Their complaint also directly challenges the sovereignty of God, who assigned the land by casting lots.

2.두려움

그래서 여호수아는 이들에게 대답합니다. “네가 큰 민족이라면, 산지로 올라가 삼림을 개척하라 (15절)”고 말합니다. 그러자 이들의 진짜 속내가 나옵니다. 16절에 “그 산지는 좁고 그 해당 지역에 거주하고 있는 가나안 족속이 다 철 병거로 무장하고 있다”는 것입니다. 이들의 이러한 반응은 앞서 언급했듯이 갈렙과 슬로브핫의 딸들과의 반응과 대조적인 반응입니다. 받은 은혜를 잊고 현실의 문제만 바라보며 두려움에 생각이 마비되어 판단력이 흐려진 듯합니다. 사실 15절에 여호수아가 언급한 르바임 족속은 가나인의 거인족 중 하나입니다. 그러니 생김새에서부터 두려움이 몰려오지 않을 수가 없을 것 같습니다. 그러나 여호수아는 이들의 두려움에 동조하지 않습니다. “그 산지도 네 것이 되리니 비록 삼림이라도 네가 개척하라 그 끝까지 네 것이 되리라 가나안 족속이 비록 철 병거를 가졌고 강할지라도 네가 능히 그를 쫓아내리라 하였더라” (18절). 여호수아는 하나님의 약속을 믿고 개척하면 반드시 승리할 것이라고 지혜롭게 권면합니다.

2. Fear

So Joshua replies, “If you are a numerous people, go up into the forested hill country and clear it for yourselves” (v.15). And then their true feelings come out. Verse 16 says, “The hill country is too small for us, and the Canaanites who live there have iron chariots.” Their response stands in sharp contrast to that of Caleb or the daughters of Zelophehad. Forgetting the grace they’ve received, they only see the difficulties in front of them. Fear clouds their judgment. In verse 15, Joshua mentions the Rephaim — one of the giant clans among the Canaanites. Naturally, their appearance alone would be intimidating. But Joshua does not agree with their fear. Instead, he says: “Though it is a forest, you will clear it and it will be yours to the very borders. Even though the Canaanites have iron chariots and are strong, you will drive them out” (v.18). Joshua wisely encourages them, reminding them that if they trust in God’s promise and move forward, victory is certain.

아까 서론에서 보았던 착시 그림 이야기를 다시 떠올려 봅니다. 처음엔 아무리 봐도 할머니밖에 안 보이는데, 계속해서 집중하고 바라보다 보면 어느 순간 젊은 여자의 모습이 ‘탁’ 하고 보이게 되는 경험이 있습니다. 그만큼 같은 그림도 어떻게 보느냐는 우리의 마음 상태와 의지에 크게 달려 있습니다. 우리의 뇌가 익숙한 방향으로만 해석하려 해도, 우리가 계속해서 바르게 보려고 노력하면 결국 보아야 할 것을 보게 됩니다. 요셉 자손에게 산지는 위기였고, 철 병거는 두려움의 근거였습니다. 그러나 갈렙에게 산지는 기회였습니다. 우리도 상황을 보면 불평이 먼저 나오고, 현실을 보면 두려움이 앞설 때가 있습니다. 그때마다 우리의 영적 시각이 착시를 일으키는 것이지요. 하지만 문제를 바라보는 대신 하나님을 바라보기로 선택할 때, 보이지 않던 길이 보이고, 기회가 다시 회복되고, 약속이 현실이 됩니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분, 불평과 두려움이라는 영적 착시에 속지 맙시다. 그것이 우리의 눈을 가리고 마음을 혼란스럽게 할 때, 하나님의 약속을 붙잡고 믿음의 순종으로 나아가십시오. 그럴 때 하나님께서 불가능해 보이는 상황 속에서도 약속을 이루시는 분임을 경험하게 될 것입니다.

Let’s return for a moment to the optical illusion image we looked at in the introduction. At first, no matter how long you look, you may only see the old woman. But as you keep focusing and looking carefully, there comes a moment when the image of the young woman suddenly appears before your eyes. In the same way, how we see the exact same picture often depends greatly on the condition of our heart and the intention of our will. Even when our brain tries to interpret things only in familiar ways, if we keep trying to see correctly, we will eventually see what we need to see. To the descendants of Joseph, the hill country looked like a crisis, and the chariots of iron were a source of fear. But to Caleb, the very same hill country was an opportunity. We too often find ourselves grumbling when we look at our circumstances, and feeling afraid when we face reality. In those moments, our spiritual sight is experiencing a kind of optical illusion. But when we choose to look at God instead of focusing on the problem, paths we couldn’t see before begin to appear. Opportunities are restored, and God’s promises become reality. Beloved brothers and sisters, let us not be deceived by the spiritual illusions of grumbling and fear. When those things cloud our vision and trouble our hearts, hold fast to God’s promises and move forward in faithful obedience. As you do, you will experience that God is the One who fulfills His promises even in situations that seem impossible.
