7:1 이스라엘 자손들이 온전히 바친 물건으로 말미암아 범죄하였으니 이는 유다 지파 세라의 증손 삽디의 손자 갈미의 아들 아간이 온전히 바친 물건을 가졌음이라 여호와께서 이스라엘 자손들에게 진노하시니라

Achan’s Sin

1 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.

7:2 여호수아가 여리고에서 사람을 벧엘 동쪽 벧아웬 곁에 있는 아이로 보내며 그들에게 말하여 이르되 올라가서 그 땅을 정탐하라 하매 그 사람들이 올라가서 아이를 정탐하고

2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, “Go up and spy out the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.

7:3 여호수아에게로 돌아와 그에게 이르되 백성을 다 올라가게 하지 말고 이삼천 명만 올라가서 아이를 치게 하소서 그들은 소수이니 모든 백성을 그리로 보내어 수고롭게 하지 마소서 하므로

7:4 백성 중 삼천 명쯤 그리로 올라갔다가 아이 사람 앞에서 도망하니

7:5 아이 사람이 그들을 삼십육 명쯤 쳐죽이고 성문 앞에서부터 스바림까지 쫓아가 내려가는 비탈에서 쳤으므로 백성의 마음이 녹아 물 같이 된지라

3 When they returned to Joshua, they said, “Not all the army will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary the whole army, for only a few people live there.” 4 So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, 5 who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear and became like water.

7:6 여호수아가 옷을 찢고 이스라엘 장로들과 함께 여호와의 궤 앞에서 땅에 엎드려 머리에 티끌을 뒤집어쓰고 저물도록 있다가

7:7 이르되 슬프도소이다 주 여호와여 어찌하여 이 백성을 인도하여 요단을 건너게 하시고 우리를 아모리 사람의 손에 넘겨 멸망시키려 하셨나이까 우리가 요단 저쪽을 만족하게 여겨 거주하였다면 좋을 뻔하였나이다

7:8 주여 이스라엘이 그의 원수들 앞에서 돌아섰으니 내가 무슨 말을 하오리이까

7:9 가나안 사람과 이 땅의 모든 사람들이 듣고 우리를 둘러싸고 우리 이름을 세상에서 끊으리니 주의 크신 이름을 위하여 어떻게 하시려 하나이까 하니

6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8 Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?”

7:10 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 일어나라 어찌하여 이렇게 엎드렸느냐

7:11 이스라엘이 범죄하여 내가 그들에게 명령한 나의 언약을 어겼으며 또한 그들이 온전히 바친 물건을 가져가고 도둑질하며 속이고 그것을 그들의 물건들 가운데에 두었느니라

7:12 그러므로 이스라엘 자손들이 그들의 원수 앞에 능히 맞서지 못하고 그 앞에서 돌아섰나니 이는 그들도 온전히 바친 것이 됨이라 그 온전히 바친 물건을 너희 중에서 멸하지 아니하면 내가 다시는 너희와 함께 있지 아니하리라

10 The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.

7:13 너는 일어나서 백성을 거룩하게 하여 이르기를 너희는 내일을 위하여 스스로 거룩하게 하라 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 말씀에 이스라엘아 너희 가운데에 온전히 바친 물건이 있나니 너희가 그 온전히 바친 물건을 너희 가운데에서 제하기까지는 네 원수들 앞에 능히 맞서지 못하리라

13 “Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

7:14 너희는 아침에 너희의 지파대로 가까이 나아오라 여호와께 뽑히는 그 지파는 그 족속대로 가까이 나아올 것이요 여호와께 뽑히는 족속은 그 가족대로 가까이 나아올 것이요 여호와께 뽑히는 그 가족은 그 남자들이 가까이 나아올 것이며

7:15 온전히 바친 물건을 가진 자로 뽑힌 자를 불사르되 그와 그의 모든 소유를 그리하라 이는 여호와의 언약을 어기고 이스라엘 가운데에서 망령된 일을 행하였음이라 하셨다 하라

14 “‘In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”

어제와 오늘 본문의 분위기가 180도 달라졌습니다. 앞선 6장에서만 하더라도 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 명령에 철저히 순종함으로써 여리고를 정복했었습니다. 다만 7장에 들어서자마자 승리의 분위기는 범죄의 이야기로 전환됩니다. 1절의 시작을 살펴보시면 이렇게 시작됩니다. “이스라엘 자손들이 온전히 바친 물건으로 말미암아 범죄하였으니.” 이스라엘 자손들이 온전히 바친 물건, 즉 하나님의 소유로 구별된 것들로 말미암아 범죄하였다고 합니다. 이어서 “이는 유다 지파 세라의 증손 삽디의 손자 갈미의 아들 아간이 온전히 바친 물건을 가졌음이라”라고 그 주범이 아간 한 사람이었음을 말해줍니다. 여리고에서 취한 물건을 개인적으로 취함으로 하나님의 것을 도둑질한 아간은 이스라엘 전체가 하나님의 진노를 입게 만들었습니다. 오늘 본문의 말씀은 한 사람의 죄가 공동체 전체에 얼마나 큰 악영향을 끼치는지를 살펴보게 합니다. 왜냐하면 개인의 죄가 하나님과 공동체 전체와의 관계를 단절시켰기 때문입니다. 그러므로 공동체가 하나님 앞에 바로 서기 위해서 각 개인이 명심해야 할 사항을 함께 살펴봅시다.

The atmosphere between yesterday’s passage and today’s is completely different. In chapter 6, the Israelites had just conquered Jericho by strictly obeying God’s commands. But the moment we enter chapter 7, the tone shifts from victory to a story of transgression. Verse 1 begins like this: “But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things.” It explains that the Israelites committed sin by taking what had been devoted to the Lord—things set apart as God’s possession. Then it reveals the culprit: Achan, son of Carmi, grandson of Zabdi, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. By taking what belonged to God from Jericho for himself, Achan caused all Israel to fall under God’s judgment. Today’s passage shows how the sin of one individual can negatively impact an entire community, because personal sin broke the relationship not only between Achan and God, but between the whole community and God. Therefore, for a community to stand rightly before God, each person must remember several important truths.

첫째는 말씀 그대로 순종하기 입니다.

아간의 범죄는 하나님께 바쳐진 것을 가로챈 언약 위반이었습니다. 앞서 여리고성을 쳐들어 가기 직전 일곱째 날 새벽에 모든 이가 여호수아로부터 같은 명령을 들었습니다. “오직 너희는 그 바친 물건에 손대지 말라 (6:15b)”. 은금과 동철 기구들은 다 여호와께 구별된 것들이었습니다. 그러나 아간은 고작 아름다운 외투 한 벌, 은 이백 세겔, 금 오십 세겔 분량을 보고 마음이 뺏겨 훔치고 말았습니다 (21절). 그의 마음 속 무엇이 동기가 되어 이런 결정을 내리게 됐는지 우리는 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 중요한 것은 죄는 어떠한 모양과 크기이든지 간에 하나님 관점에서 보면 다 죄라는 사실입니다. 작은 죄도 없고 큰 죄도 없고 다 그냥 같은 죄인거지요. 그러니 어떠한 가슴 절절한 사연이 있다고 한들, 어릴 때부터 가지고 있던 트라우마가 있었다고 한들 그러한 변명은 사실 통하지 않습니다. 그러니 우리는 죄의 심각성을 깨달아야 합니다. 하나님을 경외해야 합니다. 그리고 말씀 그대로 순종하기 위해 노력해야 합니다.

1. Obey God’s Word exactly as it is written.

Achan’s sin was a violation of the covenant—stealing what was dedicated to God. The day before the people marched against Jericho for the final time, everyone heard the same command from Joshua: “Keep away from the devoted things” (6:15b). The silver, gold, bronze, and iron articles were all set apart for the Lord. However, Achan saw a beautiful robe, two hundred shekels of silver, and fifty shekels of gold, and his heart was drawn to them. He stole them (v. 21). We don’t know what inner motive led him to make such a decision, but in God’s eyes, sin is sin—regardless of size, motive, or circumstance. There are no “big” or “small” sins from God’s perspective. No tragic backstory, childhood trauma, or personal justification can excuse sin. Therefore, we must understand the seriousness of sin, fear the Lord, and strive to obey His Word as He commands.

둘째는 빠르게 회개하기입니다.

아간의 개인적인 욕심으로 저질러진 죄악은 공동체의 죄로 전이됐습니다. 하나님 앞에 정결함을 잃은 공동체는 하나님과 단절됩니다. 하나님과 단절된 공동체는 하나님의 임재의 중요성을 잊게됩니다. 그러자 나온 결과가 바로 영적 자만입니다. 오늘 본문 아이성 전쟁을 준비하는 과정 어디에서도 하나님께 묻거나 기도하는 장면은 나오지 않습니다. 다만 정탐꾼들의 보고만 듣고 여호수아 스스로 판단하고 결정했습니다. 3절입니다. “백성을 다 올라가게 하지 말고 이삼천 명만 올라가서 아이를 치게 하소서 그들은 소수이니 모든 백성을 그리로 보내어 수고롭게 하지 마소서”라고 정탐꾼들이 말합니다. 아마 여리고성을 정복한 이후 자신감이 하늘을 찔렀을 수 있습니다. 하지만 거룩함의 회복 없이는 하나님의 동행도, 승리도 없습니다. 즉 하나님을 전적으로 의지하는 것이 아니라 정탐꾼들의 조언을 따른 여호수아는 리더로서 실패합니다. 그리고 그렇게 이스라엘 백성은 아이성 점령에 실패합니다.

2. Repent quickly.

Achan’s personal greed became the community’s corporate sin. When a community loses purity before God, it becomes separated from Him. And a community separated from God soon forgets the importance of His presence—and pride follows. In today’s passage, when preparing for the battle against Ai, we see no instance where Joshua seeks the Lord or prays. Instead, the people listen only to the scouts’ report, and Joshua makes decisions on his own. The scouts say in verse 3, “Do not send all the people up, but only two or three thousand men to attack Ai, for they are few.” Fresh off the victory over Jericho, confidence may have soared. But without restoration of holiness, there can be neither God’s presence nor victory. Joshua, relying on human assessment rather than God, fails as a leader—and Israel loses the battle.

그러자 6절에서 여호수아는 하나님 앞에 엎드려 통곡합니다. 여호수아가 옷을 찢고 재를 뒤집어쓰며 얼굴을 땅에 대고 저녁까지 통곡하며 기도한 행동은 참으로 잘 했습니다. 그러나 그가 부르짖은 기도 내용은 사실 조금 의문스럽습니다. 여호수아는 7절에서 왜 이스라엘 백성이 요단강을 건너게 하셨느냐며 슬퍼하고 의문을 제기합니다. 과거 이스라엘 백성이 가나안 정복을 두려워 했을 때 갈렙과 함께 나서서 땅을 차지해야 한다고 옷을 찢으며 주장했던 그 여호수아는 어디갔을까요? 비록 여호수아는 의구심, 회의감에 두 눈이 가리어져 무엇이 어디서부터 잘못되었는지 전혀 눈치채지 못했습니다. 그러나 여전히 그는 여호와를 ‘주님’이라고 부르며 경의를 표하고 있습니다. 여호수아의 이런 모습은 우리에게 큰 위로가 됩니다. 하루 성령 충만한 듯 살다가도 바로 다음 날 영성이 바닥을 치는 듯한 우리의 한계를 보면 ‘내가 정말 하나님과 동행하는 자가 맞는가’ 의구심이 들 때가 있습니다. 내가 지금 겪는 고난이 사탄의 시험인지 하나님의 심판인지 판단이 서지 않을 때도 있습니다. 이때 우리는 그대로 낙담하고 주저앉거나 뒤돌아 떠나는 것이 아니라 대신 일단 무릎 꿇고 빠르게 회개부터 하고 봐야겠습니다. 원망이 터져나와도 그 원망을 엉뚱한 곳에 터트리는 것이 아니라 일단 하나님께 하고 보는 겁니다. 예수님의 말씀이 떠오릅니다. “심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이요 애통하는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 위로를 받을 것임이요” (마태복음 5:3-4). 심령이 가난하고 애통하여 하나님께 기도하고 하늘로부터 넘치는 복과 위로를 받는 성도님들 되시길 기도드립니다.

In verse 6, Joshua falls on his face before God in deep mourning. He tears his clothes, covers himself in dust, and prays until evening. His actions were appropriate and sincere. However, the content of his prayer raises concerns. In verse 7, Joshua questions why God brought Israel across the Jordan at all. Where was the Joshua who once tore his clothes alongside Caleb and urged the people to trust God and possess the land? His doubts and discouragement blinded him to the real cause of the defeat. Yet even in his confusion, Joshua still addresses the Lord as “Sovereign Lord,” showing reverence. This is a comfort to us. Many of us experience days where we feel spiritually full, only to wake up the next day feeling empty and defeated. Sometimes we cannot tell whether our suffering is a trial from Satan or discipline from God. In such moments, we should not give up or walk away—but fall to our knees and repent quickly. Even if complaints well up within us, let us bring them to God, not elsewhere. Jesus’ words come to mind: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:3–4) May we be people who, in poverty of spirit and godly sorrow, pray to God and receive His overflowing comfort and blessing.

마지막으로 거룩성 유지하기 입니다.

결국 10절에 여호와께서 여호수아에게 응답하십니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘이 하나님과의 언약을 가볍게 여긴 죄로 전쟁에서 패할 수 밖에 없었음을 알려주십니다 (11절). 또한 해결 방도를 자세히 알려주시며 이스라엘 백성들이 다시금 거룩성을 회복하여 더불어 하나님과의 관계가 회복될 수 있는 길을 열어주십니다. 이처럼 성도 개인의 삶이 곧 교회의 거룩함에 영향을 미친다는 사실은 우리의 경각심을 더욱 높여줍니다. 여러분 방심하지 말고 죄를 가볍게 여기지 맙시다. 죄를 미워합시다. 하나님이 거룩한 분이시기에 마땅히 우리도 하나님의 백성으로서 거룩하게 살아야 합니다. 날마다 자기자신을 살피며 회개함으로 거룩한 삶을 사는 성도님들 되시기를 기도드립니다.

3. Maintain holiness.

Finally in verse 10, the Lord answers Joshua. God reveals that Israel was defeated because they treated His covenant lightly (v. 11). He then provides specific instructions for how Israel can be restored to holiness and renewed in relationship with Him. This teaches us that the spiritual condition of individual believers affects the holiness of the entire church. Let us not become careless or treat sin lightly. Let us hate sin. Since God is holy, His people must also live in holiness. I pray that each of us examines our own heart daily, repents, and lives a life that reflects God’s holiness.
