6:1 이스라엘 자손들로 말미암아 여리고는 굳게 닫혔고 출입하는 자가 없더라

1 Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.

6:2 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 보라 내가 여리고와 그 왕과 용사들을 네 손에 넘겨 주었으니

6:3 너희 모든 군사는 그 성을 둘러 성 주위를 매일 한 번씩 돌되 엿새 동안을 그리하라

6:4 제사장 일곱은 일곱 양각 나팔을 잡고 언약궤 앞에서 나아갈 것이요 일곱째 날에는 그 성을 일곱 번 돌며 그 제사장들은 나팔을 불 것이며

6:5 제사장들이 양각 나팔을 길게 불어 그 나팔 소리가 너희에게 들릴 때에는 백성은 다 큰 소리로 외쳐 부를 것이라 그리하면 그 성벽이 무너져 내리리니 백성은 각기 앞으로 올라갈지니라 하시매

2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

6:6 눈의 아들 여호수아가 제사장들을 불러 그들에게 이르되 너희는 언약궤를 메고 제사장 일곱은 양각 나팔 일곱을 잡고 여호와의 궤 앞에서 나아가라 하고

6:7 또 백성에게 이르되 나아가서 그 성을 돌되 무장한 자들이 여호와의 궤 앞에서 나아갈지니라 하니라

6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

6:8 여호수아가 백성에게 이르기를 마치매 제사장 일곱은 양각 나팔 일곱을 잡고 여호와 앞에서 나아가며 나팔을 불고 여호와의 언약궤는 그 뒤를 따르며

6:9 그 무장한 자들은 나팔 부는 제사장들 앞에서 행진하며 후군은 궤 뒤를 따르고 제사장들은 나팔을 불며 행진하더라

6:10 여호수아가 백성에게 명령하여 이르되 너희는 외치지 말며 너희 음성을 들리게 하지 말며 너희 입에서 아무 말도 내지 말라 그리하다가 내가 너희에게 명령하여 외치라 하는 날에 외칠지니라 하고

6:11 여호와의 궤가 그 성을 한 번 돌게 하고 그들이 진영으로 들어 와서 진영에서 자니라

8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

6:12 또 여호수아가 아침에 일찍이 일어나니 제사장들이 여호와의 궤를 메고

6:13 제사장 일곱은 양각 나팔 일곱을 잡고 여호와의 궤 앞에서 계속 행진하며 나팔을 불고 무장한 자들은 그 앞에 행진하며 후군은 여호와의 궤 뒤를 따르고 제사장들은 나팔을 불며 행진하니라

6:14 그 둘째 날에도 그 성을 한 번 돌고 진영으로 돌아오니라 엿새 동안을 이같이 행하니라

12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

                  이상합니다. 요단강을 건넜어요. 이제 적진입니다. 공격 명령이 내려올 줄 알았는데 아니에요. 할례를 하랍니다. 아니 여기서 할례를 하라니요. 그러다 적군이 나오면 다 죽습니다. 하지만 말씀대로 할례를 합니다. 그리고 유월절을 지킵니다. 그러다 여호수아가 여리고 성에 가까이 왔을 때 여호와의 군대 대장을 만납니다. 군대 대장이니까 전투명령을 내리시려나보다 했더니 ‘네 신을 벗으라’ 합니다. 뭔가 이상합니다. 전쟁하러 왔는데 지금 적진 한가운데서 이들이 하고 있는 것은 전쟁이 아니지요. 대체 뭘 하고 있는 걸까요? 오늘 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 여호와께서 이들에게 ‘보라, 여리고를 네 손에 넘겨 주었다.’ 라고 하시며 공략 방법을 설명해 주십니다. 와! 드디어! 이제 몸 좀 푸나요? 그런데 그 방법이 무엇입니까? 성을 둘러 성 주위를 계속 도는거에요. 세상에 이런 공략법이 어디 있습니까? 도무지  이해되지 않는 이 말씀을 가지고 오늘은 “보고, 걷고, 침묵하라” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

It is strange. The Israelites have crossed the Jordan River. They are now in enemy territory. We would expect an attack order, but no. Instead, they are told to perform circumcision. Circumcision, here? If the enemy comes out now, they will all be slaughtered. Yet, they obey and perform circumcision. Then, they celebrate the Passover.

As Joshua approaches Jericho, he meets the Commander of the Army of the Lord. Since he’s a commander, you’d expect battle orders, right? But instead, he says, "Take off your sandals."

Something is definitely strange. They came here to fight a war, but right here in the middle of enemy territory, what they are doing is anything but war. What on earth are they doing?

Today’s passage is no different. The Lord tells them, "See! I have delivered Jericho into your hands." And then He explains the battle plan.

Wow! Finally! Are we going to see some action?

But what is the plan? March around the city. Just keep walking around it. Have you ever heard of such a strategy?

With this incomprehensible command in mind, I want to share a message titled: See, Walk, and Be Silent.

                  첫번째, ‘보라’ 입니다. 뭘 보라는 걸까요? 1절을 함께 읽겠습니다. “이스라엘 자손들로 말미암아 여리고는 굳게 닫혔고 출입하는 자가 없더라” 자 여리고 성은 인류가 거주했던 가장 오래된 성읍 중의 하나라고 합니다. 그도 그럴것이 여리고는 오아시스인데 가파른 언덕 위에 있었습니다. 여기에 이중으로 성벽을 쌓았습니다. 성벽의 두께가 1.5m, 높이는 약 14m 정도로 추정된답니다. 오아시스라서 물도 풍부하고 ‘종려나무 성’ 이라고 불릴만큼 수목이 우거졌대요. 적이 쳐들어오면 어떻게 하면 될까요? 그냥 문걸어 잠그고 버티면 됩니다. 적들은 들어올 수 없어요. 이게 완전 사기에요. 이게 왜 사기냐면요, 여러분. 요즘도 전쟁은 무섭습니다. 그쵸? 근데 칼들고 직접 육탄전으로 싸워야 하는 옛날의 전쟁은 더 무서울 수 밖에 없어요. 그래서 당시에 성을 공략한다는 것은 성으로 진격을 하는게 아니었어요. 성을 포위하고 보급이 끊긴 성 안의 사람들을 말려죽이는 것이었습니다. 그런데 여리고 성은 이게 됩니까? 안되지요. 자 그런데 오늘 말씀 1절에 “여리고는 굳게 닫혔고” 라고 합니다. 원문으로 보면 “여리고는 닫았고 닫혔다” 라면서 완전히 닫혔다는 것을 보여주고 있어요. 여호수아는 지금 이걸 보고 있습니다. 이게 여호수아의 눈 앞의 현실이에요. 그런데 하나님 뭐라고 하십니까? 2절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 보라 내가 여리고와 그 왕과 용사들을 네 손에 넘겨 주었으니” 하나님께서 ‘보라’고 하십니다. 뭘 보라는 걸까요? 내 눈 앞에 서있는 저 굳게 닫힌 여리고 성? 아니지요. 하나님께서 “내가 그 왕과 용사들을 네 손에 넘겨 주었다” 는 말씀을 보라는 거에요. 여러분 “믿음은 바라는 것의 실상이요 보지 못하는 것의 증거니” 아멘. 내 눈 앞의 현실은 아니라고 해요. 그런데 하나님께서는 이미 주셨다고 합니다. 무엇을 보아야 할까요? 하나님의 말씀을 보아야 합니다. 그렇다면 그 말씀을 보는 것은 어떻게 보아야 하는 것인가?

[Point 1: See]

First, "See." What are we supposed to see? Let’s read verse 1 together:

"Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in."

Jericho is known as one of the oldest inhabited cities in human history. And for good reason. It was an oasis, situated on a steep hill. It had double walls. The walls were estimated to be about 1.5 meters (5 feet) thick and 14 meters (46 feet) high. Because it was an oasis, it had plenty of water and was lush with palm trees.

If an enemy attacks, what do you do? Just lock the gates and wait it out. The enemy can't get in. This is practically a cheat code. Why? Because ancient warfare, which involved hand-to-hand combat with swords, was terrifying. So, the strategy wasn't usually to charge the walls, but to lay siege—surround the city, cut off supplies, and starve them out. But with Jericho? That wouldn't work.

Verse 1 says, "Jericho was securely barred." The original text emphasizes this by saying, "Jericho had shut its gates and was shut up." It was completely sealed.

This is what Joshua is seeing. This is the reality right before his eyes.

But what does God say? Let’s read verse 2:

"Then the Lord said to Joshua, 'See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.'"

God says, "See." What should he see? The tightly shut city standing before him? No. He is to see God's word: "I have delivered its king and fighting men into your hands."

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Amen. The reality before my eyes says "No." But God says He has already given it. What must we see? We must see the Word of God.

So, how do we "see" the Word?

                  그것이 바로 오늘의 말씀 두번째, 걸어야 합니다. 걸어야 한다니 이게 무슨 뜻인가? 하나님의 말씀을 보았다면 그 말씀에 순종해야 한다는 뜻입니다. 때로 그 말씀이 이해가 되질 않는다고 해도 말이지요. 자, 본문의 말씀 3-5절은 하나님께서 여호수아에게 여리고 성 공략법을 알려주시는 장면입니다. 그 공략법이 앞에서 뭐라구요? 도는 겁니다. 계속 돌아요. 오늘도 돌고, 내일도 돌고, 그렇게 6일을 돌아요. 마지막 7일 째에는 일곱번을 돕니다. 그리고 나팔을 불고 함성을 지르면 저 성벽이 무너질거래요. 아니 무슨 공략법이 이래요? 본문을 연구하고 있는데 들국화의 ‘행진’ 이라는 노래와 ‘돌고 돌고 돌고’ 라는 노래가 생각나더라구요. 세상에 이런 공략법이 어디있습니까? 웃긴거 뭔지 아세요? 3절을 보시면 “그 성을 둘러 성 주위를 매일 한 번씩 돌”아라 라고 말씀하고 계세요. 성을 둘러서 성 주위를 그렇게 돌면 위에서 보면 움직이는 과녁이지요. 이거 목숨 내놓고 하는 짓입니다. 얼마나 좋아요? 쳐들어 오지도 않아 그냥 나팔 불면서 돌기만 해. 조준하기 힘들도록 뛰어다니는 것도 아니고 언약궤를 메고 걸어가고 있으니 아주 세상 쉽지요. 여러분, 지금 이 순종은요, 목숨걸고 하는 겁니다. 그러니 이해가 안되는게 당연한 거지요. 하나님의 말씀이라고 순종하려고 했더니 내가 적 앞에서 완전히 무방비 상태로 있어야 한다면 여러분 순종하시겠습니까? 그것도 하루 이틀도 아니고 칠 일동안 말입니다. 처음 며칠은 적들도 무서워서 숨었다가도 한 삼 사일째 되면 나와서 화살이라도 한 번 쏘지 않겠어요? 자 여러분 여러분이 이렇게 걷고 있으면 무슨 생각이 들까요? 첫번째는 두려움이겠지요. 두번째는 이걸로 될까? 그냥 걷고만 있는데 이걸로 뭐가 되긴 할까? 매일 똑같이 걷고 있는데 아무런 변화도 없잖아. 뭐라도 더 해야하는게 아닐까?

[Point 2: Walk]

That brings us to the second point: We must Walk.

What does it mean that we must walk? It means that once we have "seen" God's Word, we must obey it—even when we don't understand it.

Verses 3-5 describe God's battle plan for Joshua. And what was that plan again? To circle the city. Just keep walking. Walk today, walk tomorrow. Do this for six days. On the seventh day, walk around seven times. Then blow the trumpets and shout, and the walls will collapse.

What kind of strategy is this?

As I was studying this passage, I thought of a song: "Marching, round and round and round." Who fights a war like this?

And you know what's funny? Verse 3 says, "March around the city once with all the armed men." If you march around the city like that, from above, you are just moving targets. You are risking your life to do this. How convenient for the enemy! You don't even attack; you just walk around blowing trumpets. You're not running fast to dodge arrows; you're walking slowly, carrying the Ark of the Covenant. It's an easy target practice for them.

Friends, this obedience is a life-or-death matter. It is natural that it doesn't make sense. If God told you to obey, but that obedience required you to be completely defenseless in front of your enemy for seven days, would you do it? Maybe the enemy would hide in fear for the first few days, but by day three or four, wouldn't they come out and shoot at least one arrow?

Imagine you are walking there. What would you be thinking?

First, fear.

Second, doubt. "Will this really work? We're just walking. Nothing is changing. Shouldn't we be doing something more?"

                  자 여기에 오늘의 세번째, ‘침묵하라’ 입니다. 10절 말씀을 보시겠습니다. “여호수아가 백성에게 명령하여 이르되 너희는 외치지 말며 너희 음성을 들리게 하지 말며 너희 입에서 아무 말도 내지 말라 그리하다가 내가 너희에게 명령하여 외치라 하는 날에 외칠지니라 하고” 여호수아는 그들에게 절대적인 침묵을 강조합니다. 오직 명령하는 날에만 외치라고 명령하지요. 매일 똑같이 여리고 성을 돌고 있는 그들의 머릿속에는 별 생각이 다 들었을 것입니다. 여러분 여리고 성이 그리 크지 않아요. 고고학자들의 발굴의 의하면 대략 한 600-1000m 정도로 보고 있습니다. 최대로 잡아서 1km라고 하면 일반적인 성인이 평지에서 보통 속도로 걸으면 쉬엄쉬엄 걸어도 15분 정도 걸립니다. 그러면 11절을 한 번 같이 읽어볼까요? “여호와의 궤가 그 성을 한 번 돌게 하고 그들이 진영으로 들어와서 진영에서 자니라” 자, 성을 한 번 돌고 진영으로 돌아와서 잤대요. 자 그러면 여호수아가 느즈막히 해가 뉘엿뉘엿할 때 산책하듯이 자 갑시다 하고 한바퀴 돌고 왔을까요? 12절도 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “또 여호수아가 아침에 일찍이 일어나니 제사장들이 여호와의 궤를 메고” 잠깐, 이상하지 않습니까? 15분 정도면 돌 수 있는 거리잖아요? 11절에서 돌고 오면 진영에서 잤다고 하는데 12절에서는 아침 일찍 일어나 돌았다구요? 그러면 지금 15분 거리를 하루 종일 걸었다는 겁니까? 그러면 얼마나 천천히 걸었다는 거에요? 여러분, 이렇게 천천히 걸었든 아니면 15분 정도 만에 행진을 끝내고 나머지 시간은 돌아와서 쉬었든 간에 어떤 방법이든 머릿속에 의문이 들지 않을까요? 느리면 느린대로 쉬고 있으면 쉬고 있는대로 이게 지금 뭐하는 거지? 생각이 안 들래야 안 들을 수가 없을 것 같아요. 하나님 말씀이라면 목숨을 걸고 싸울 준비가 되어 있는데 내가 해야하는 건 걷는 겁니다. 그래서 내가 뭐라도 막 더 하고 싶어요. 소리라도 지르고 싶은데 뭐라고 말씀하십니까? “아무 말도 내지 말라.” 

[Point 3: Be Silent]

This leads to our third point: "Be Silent."

Let's look at verse 10:

"But Joshua had commanded the army, 'Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!'"

Joshua commands absolute silence. They are only to shout on the commanded day.

As they walked around Jericho every day, all sorts of thoughts must have crossed their minds. Jericho wasn't that big. Archaeologists estimate the perimeter was about 600 to 1,000 meters (less than a mile). Even at a slow, leisurely pace, an adult could walk around it in about 15 minutes.

Let’s read verse 11:

"So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there."

So, they circled once, went back to camp, and slept. Did Joshua take them for a leisurely stroll in the late afternoon? "Let's go for a walk," and they were done?

But let's read verse 12:

"Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord."

Wait, isn't that strange? It takes 15 minutes to walk around. But verse 12 says they got up early in the morning. Does that mean they spent the whole day walking that 15-minute distance? How slowly were they walking?

Friends, whether they walked incredibly slowly or finished in 15 minutes and sat around the rest of the day, wouldn't questions arise? "If we're going this slow, what are we doing?" "If we're done and just sitting here, what is this?" You couldn't help but think.

If it's God's word, I'm ready to fight and die. But all I'm supposed to do is walk? I want to do something. I want to at least scream! But what does He say? "Do not say a word."

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 보고, 걷고, 침묵하라. 하나님의 말씀을 보고, 하나님의 말씀에 순종하고, 나의 힘을 다 내려놓아야 합니다. 제가 서론에서 이들이 적진에 와서 대체 뭘하고 있는걸까? 질문했었습니다. 요단강을 가르셨던 이유를 4:24은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “이는 땅의 모든 백성에게 여호와의 손이 강하신 것을 알게 하며 너희가 너희의 하나님 여호와를 항상 경외하게 하려 하심이라.” 할례를 행하실 때 출애굽 첫세대를 가르켜 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. 5:6 “이스라엘 자손들이 여호와의 음성을 청종하지 아니하므로” 하나님께서는 이들에게 당신의 손이 강하신 것을 알게 하려 하셨습니다. 그들로 하나님의 음성을 듣기 원하셨습니다. 이들이 항상 하나님 만을 경외하게 하려 하셨습니다. 오늘 말씀은 그래서 제사장과 여호와의 궤라는 두 단어가 계속 반복됩니다. 오늘 말씀을 한 마디로 줄이면 11절, “여호와의 궤가 그 성을 한 번 돌게 하고” 입니다. 무슨 뜻입니까? 이들이 돈 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 돈 것입니다. 이들이 싸운게 아니에요. 하나님께서 싸우셨습니다. 보고, 걷고, 침묵하라. 하나님께서 이들에게 여리고를 주셨습니다. 눈앞에 닫혀있는 성벽이 아닌 하나님의 약속을 보는 것입니다. 하나님께서 이들과 함께하십니다. 그래서 우리는  말씀에 순종하여 목숨을 내놓고 걸을 수 있는 것입니다. 전쟁은 하나님께 속해 있습니다. 우리는 그것을 기억하고 잠잠히 기다려야 하는 것입니다. 여러분 보고, 걷고, 침묵하십시오. 여호와의 궤가 그 성을 돌고계십니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

[Conclusion]

See, Walk, and Be Silent.

We must see God’s Word, obey God’s Word, and lay down our own strength.

In the introduction, I asked: "What on earth are they doing here in enemy territory?"

Joshua 4:24 explains why God parted the Jordan: "so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God."

When commanding circumcision, God said of the first generation in Joshua 5:6: "because they did not obey the Lord."

God wanted them to know that His hand is powerful. He wanted them to listen to His voice. He wanted them to always fear Him alone.

That is why today’s passage repeats two phrases: "the priests" and "the Ark of the Lord."

We can summarize today's message with verse 11: "So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city."

What does this mean? They did not circle the city; God did. They did not fight; God fought.

See, Walk, and Be Silent.

God gave Jericho to them. We must not look at the closed walls, but at God’s promise. God is with them. That is why we can risk our lives to walk in obedience to His Word. The battle belongs to the Lord. We must remember that and wait in silence.

Friends, See, Walk, and Be Silent.

The Ark of the Lord is circling the city.

Let us pray.
