3:1 또 여호수아가 아침에 일찍이 일어나서 그와 모든 이스라엘 자손들과 더불어 싯딤에서 떠나 요단에 이르러 건너가기 전에 거기서 유숙하니라

3:2 사흘 후에 관리들이 진중으로 두루 다니며

3:3 백성에게 명령하여 이르되 너희는 레위 사람 제사장들이 너희 하나님 여호와의 언약궤 메는 것을 보거든 너희가 있는 곳을 떠나 그 뒤를 따르라

3:4 그러나 너희와 그 사이 거리가 이천 규빗쯤 되게 하고 그것에 가까이 하지는 말라 그리하면 너희가 행할 길을 알리니 너희가 이전에 이 길을 지나보지 못하였음이니라 하니라

1 Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. 2 After three days the officers went throughout the camp, 3 giving orders to the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. 4 Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between you and the ark; do not go near it.”

3:5 여호수아가 또 백성에게 이르되 너희는 자신을 성결하게 하라 여호와께서 내일 너희 가운데에 기이한 일들을 행하시리라

5 Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.”

3:6 여호수아가 또 제사장들에게 말하여 이르되 언약궤를 메고 백성에 앞서 건너라 하매 곧 언약궤를 메고 백성에 앞서 나아가니라

6 Joshua said to the priests, “Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people.” So they took it up and went ahead of them.

3:7 여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 내가 오늘부터 시작하여 너를 온 이스라엘의 목전에서 크게 하여 내가 모세와 함께 있었던 것 같이 너와 함께 있는 것을 그들이 알게 하리라

3:8 너는 언약궤를 멘 제사장들에게 명령하여 이르기를 너희가 요단 물가에 이르거든 요단에 들어서라 하라

7 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. 8 Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river.’”

1957년에 존스홉킨스 대학의 심리 생물학자 커트 리히터 박사(Dr. Curt Richter)는 한 실험을 했습니다. 일명 “물에 빠진 쥐” 실험인데요. 간단하게 요약하면 다음과 같습니다. 긴 유리병에 물을 반 쯤 채워 야생 쥐 몇 마리를 잡아 넣습니다. 그리고 보통 쥐들이 짧게는 1분에서 길게는 15분정도 버티고 익사함을 발견합니다. 그리고 다음 실험에서도 똑같이 쥐들을 긴 유리병에 넣고 쥐들이 헤엄치게 만듭니다. 그러나 이번에는 쥐들이 거의 포기하여 갈 때쯤 잡아다가 건져줍니다. 그리고 쥐들을 물기로부터 말려주고 잠시동안 쥐들이 쉴 수 있게 해줍니다. 그리고는 다시 한번 그 건져냈던 쥐들을 물병 안으로 집어 넣었습니다. 이번에는 쥐들이 얼마정도의 시간동안 물 속에서 살아 헤엄쳤다고 생각하십니까?  그 전에는 최대 15분이었던 것을 감안해서 한 20분? 30분? 아니요. 자그마치 60시간을 버텼다고 합니다. 그렇습니다. 한번도 사람의 손을 타보지 않았던 야생 쥐들은 외부에 어떠한 존재가 자신을 구해줄 수 있다는 개념조차 없었습니다. 일말의 희망도 없으니 더 이상 싸울 이유도 버틸 이유도 없이 자신의 현실을 받아들이고 물에 빠져 죽었죠. 그러나 단 한번의 구조 경험만으로 또 다시 구조를 받을 수 있다는 희망을 가질 수 있게 되었고 60시간이라는 긴 시간동안 버틸 수 있었습니다. 비록 잔인한 실험이었지만 우리에게 시사하는 바는 큽니다. 일개 쥐들에게도 이렇게 “희망”이란 불가능한 상황 가운데 쉽게 포기하지 않고 계속해서 살아갈 힘을 줍니다. 하물며 인간에게는 어떻겠습니까?  다만 그 희망이 어디에서부터 오는 희망인지가 중요할 것입니다. 오늘 본문에서 우리는 영원토록 변치 않으시는 전능하신 하나님의 신실하신 말씀에서 오는 믿음으로 불가능한 상황 속 희망을 얻는 자들을 만날 수 있습니다. 함께 살펴보길 원합니다.

In 1957, Dr. Curt Richter, a psychobiologist at Johns Hopkins University, conducted an experiment known as the “drowning rat” experiment. To summarize briefly: he filled tall glass jars halfway with water and placed several wild rats inside. Typically, he observed that the rats lasted anywhere from as short as 1 minute to as long as 15 minutes before drowning. In the next experiment, he repeated the process—placing rats in the water-filled jars. But this time, just when the rats were about to give up, he pulled them out. He dried them off and let them rest for a short while. Then he put the same rescued rats back into the water again. How long do you think they were able to swim the second time? Considering their previous maximum was 15 minutes, maybe 20 or 30 minutes? No. Astonishingly, they endured for 60 hours. Wild rats who had never been touched by humans had no concept that an external being could save them. With no hope at all, they had no reason to fight or endure—they simply accepted their reality and drowned. But with just a single experience of being rescued, they gained hope that they could be saved again—and that hope empowered them to endure for 60 long hours. Though it was a cruel experiment, it teaches us something significant. Even for mere rats, “hope” gives strength to keep going in impossible situations rather than giving up easily. How much more so for human beings? What matters, however, is where that hope comes from. In today’s passage, we meet those who gain hope in impossible circumstances through faith in the faithful Word of Almighty God, who never changes. Let’s look at this together.

어제 본문에서 정탐꾼들의 보고를 들은 여호수아는 아침부터 일찍 일어나 다음 작전을 준비합니다. 이제 본격적으로 시작되는 가나안 땅 정복 전쟁에 앞서 한 관문이 남았습니다. 바로 요단강을 건너가는 것입니다. 요단강은 평소에 수심이 1m정도고 폭은 30m정도로 성인 남자가 건너가기에 전혀 어려움이 없습니다. 다만 지금 현재 시기적으로 곡식을 거두는 시기(15절)라 3-4월쯤 됩니다. 그리고 이 때는 일년 중 가장 비가 많이 오는 우기입니다. 그러면 수심이 최소 3-4m로 깊어지고 폭도 1.6km로 늘어납니다. 자 이제 요단강 앞으로 왔습니다. 여호수아와 모든 이스라엘 백성들이 요단강에 이르러 진을 칩니다 (1절). 그리고 이 큰 강물 앞에서 3일동안 기다립니다. 이 시간동안 여호수아는 무슨 생각을 했을까요? 정말 눈 앞이 캄캄하고 암담하지 않았을까요? ‘약 200만명 되는 백성들이 다 어떻게 이 강을 건너지?’ 빠른 물살을 보며 두려운 마음이 훅 들어왔을 듯 합니다. 그러나 우리의 크신 하나님은 다 계획이 있습니다. 이번에도 신실히 당신의 백성들을 구할 이적을 준비하십니다. 다만 오늘 본문을 통해 우리는 하나님의 이적을 경험하기 위해서는 단순히 은혜 뿐만 아니라 요구되는 것들이 있음을 알 수 있습니다. 그것은 바로 순종하는 행위와 믿음입니다.

Yesterday, after hearing the spies’ report, Joshua woke up early in the morning to prepare for the next operation. Before they officially begin the conquest of the land of Canaan, there remains one major obstacle—the Jordan River. Normally the Jordan River is about 1 meter deep and about 30 meters wide, easy for an adult man to cross. But this was the season of the grain harvest (v. 15), around March–April, the time of year when it rains the most. During this season, the river deepens to at least 3–4 meters and widens to about 1.6 kilometers. Now Joshua and all the Israelites have arrived at the Jordan and set up camp (v. 1). They wait there for three days before this massive body of water. What must Joshua have been thinking during this time? Would the situation have seemed dark and hopeless? “How will all these people—nearly two million—cross this river?” The rushing currents must have filled him with fear. But our great God already had a plan. Once again, He was preparing a miracle to faithfully save His people. However, today’s passage teaches us that in order to experience God’s miracle, not only grace is required—there are things expected of us as well: namely, acts of obedience and faith.

1)    순종하는 행위 (3-6절)

먼저 3절에서 먼저 여호수아는 백성들에게 제사장들이 언약궤 메는 것을 보거든 그 뒤를 따르라고 말합니다. 그리고 4절에 언약궤와 백성들의 거리가 이천 규빗쯤 되게 하라고 말합니다. 그 이유는 이들이 한 번도 가보지 못한 길이기에 가야할 길을 알게 하기 위함이라고 합니다. 언약궤는 하나님의 임재를 상징합니다. 그리고 언약궤가 앞서 가는 것은 이 전쟁이 하나님이 이끄시는 전쟁임을 강조합니다. 그러므로 백성들은 거리를 두고 따르면서 경외와 질서를 배웁니다. 그리고 5절에서는 백성들에게 성결하라고 명령합니다. 그 이유는 하나님이 행하실 기이한 일들을 맞이하기 위함입니다. 지금 이 상황에서 백성들이 목욕을 하거나 의복을 빨거나 하는 정결 규례를 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 다만 심령의 성결, 곧 마음과 삶을 하나님께 드리는 것을 말합니다. 과거에 지은 죄, 불신, 우상 다 회개함으로 없애 버리고 마음을 깨끗이 하라는 명령입니다. 이제 6절에 제사장들이 언약궤를 메고 백성 앞으로 나아갑니다. 하나님이 이끄시는 행군이 시작 됐습니다. 이렇듯 이적을 경험하기 위해서는 비록 이해하기 힘들더라도 과거에 머물고 싶을지라도 거룩과 순종을 먼저 선택해야 합니다. 

1)   Acts of Obedience (vv. 3–6)

In verse 3, Joshua tells the people to follow the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant. In verse 4, he instructs them to keep a distance of about 2,000 cubits between themselves and the Ark. The reason is that they are about to travel a path they have never been on before, and they need to see the direction clearly.

The Ark symbolized God’s presence. Having the Ark go ahead emphasized that this battle would be led by God Himself. The people, by keeping their distance, learned reverence and order. In verse 5, Joshua commands the people to consecrate themselves, because God was about to perform wonders among them. This did not refer to physical cleansing rituals like bathing or washing clothes. Rather, it meant the consecration of the heart—giving their heart and life fully to God. They were commanded to cleanse their hearts through repentance, removing past sins, unbelief, and idols. Then in verse 6, the priests lift the Ark and go ahead of the people. The God-led march begins. Thus, to experience a miracle, even when we don’t understand or would prefer to remain in the familiar past, we must choose holiness and obedience first.

2)    믿음 (7절)

7절을 살펴보길 원하는데요. “여호와께서 여호수아에게 이르시되 내가 오늘부터 시작하여 너를 온 이스라엘의 목전에서 크게 하여 내가 모세와 함께 있었던 것같이 너와 함께 있는 것을 그들이 알게 하리라.” 하나님은 여호수아에게 함께하신다고 약속하십니다. 그것도 바로 모세에게 함께 했던 것처럼 말입니다. 이를 통해 모든 백성은 여호와께서 여호수아와 함께하심을 알게 될 것입니다. 그러므로 자연스럽게 지도자로서의 권위가 높아질 것을 약속하십니다. 여호수아는 모세와 함께 출애굽 1세대에서부터 하나님이 모세를 인도하심을 가장 가까이에서 지켜보고 또한 그 1세대 중에서 살아남아 약속의 땅에 들어가는 갈렙과 더불어 유일한 사람입니다. 하나님은 요단강을 건너라고 명하시는데 앞에는 큰 강물이 막아서고 있다면 여호수아는 기억해야 했습니다. 하나님께서 모세를 통해 이루신 기적들을 말이지요. 그리하여 믿음을 가져야 했습니다. 홍해의 바다를 가르신 하나님께서 요단강 물을 가르지 못하실 분이 아니심을 믿는 그 믿음을요.

2) Faith (v. 7)

In verse 7, the Lord says to Joshua, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they will know that I am with you as I was with Moses.” God promises to be with Joshua just as He was with Moses. Through this, all Israel would know that the Lord was indeed with Joshua. Naturally, Joshua’s authority as leader would be strengthened. Joshua had witnessed firsthand how God guided Moses—from the generation that came out of Egypt, he and Caleb were the only ones who survived to enter the Promised Land. When God commanded them to cross the Jordan River even though a massive flood stood before them, Joshua had to remember the miracles God performed through Moses. He needed faith—the faith that the God who parted the Red Sea could certainly part the waters of the Jordan.

결론: 기억하기

다만 한 가지 이번 이적이 홍해 사건과 눈에 띄게 다른 점이 있습니다. 과거 홍해 사건 때는 모세를 통해 먼저 홍해를 가르셨었습니다. 그리고 그 이적을 본 백성들이 바다를 건너갔지요. 그러나 이번에는 다릅니다. 요단강은 아직 갈라지지 않습니다. 여전히 물은 갈라지지 않았고 여전히 4m 높이의 물은 위협적입니다. 그런데 여호와께서 여호수아에게 불가능해 보이는 명령을 내리십니다. “너희가 요단 물 가에 이르거든 요단에 들어서라” (8b절). 여호수아와 모든 백성들은 하나님의 말씀에 순종하며 믿음을 가지고 강물로 발을 내딛는 행위를 먼저 해야 했습니다. 초신자들과 같은 어린 믿음을 위해서는 강력한 이적을 먼저 보고 싶어하고 필요할 때도 있습니다. 누구나 당연히 믿음이 흔들리고 모든게 불가능 할 것 같은 상황이 눈 앞에 닥칠 때가 오겠지요. 당장에 하나님의 구원의 이적이 일어나길 바랄 수 있겠죠. 그러나 예수님을 구주로 영접하고 구원의 확신을 갖는 성숙한 신앙인은 먼저 믿음으로 순종하며 성결해야 합니다. 그리고 여호와를 향한 믿음을 유지해야 합니다. 이 믿음을 유지하기 위해서는 기억해야 합니다. 말씀에 적힌 변하지 않는 하나님의 성품을요. 현재 요단강 앞에 놓인 것 같으신 분 계십니까? 앞이 막막하고 불가능해 보이지만 지금껏 하나님이 인도하여주신 과거를 기억해 냅시다. 약속의 말씀을 기억합시다. 그런 자에게 하나님께서는 불가능한 상황 속에서도 희망을 잃지 않게 하시고 나아갈 힘 또한 주실 줄로 믿습니다.

Conclusion

There is, however, one key difference between this miracle and the Red Sea event. In the past, during the Red Sea miracle, God parted the waters first through Moses. Then, after witnessing that miracle, the people crossed the sea. But this time, things are different. The Jordan River has not yet parted. The waters remain unbroken, and the four-meter-high floodwaters still look threatening. Yet the Lord gives Joshua a command that seems impossible:“When you reach the edge of the Jordan’s waters, go and stand in the river” (v. 8b). Joshua and all the people had to first take a step into the river—an act of obedience and faith in God’s word. For those with newborn faith, like spiritual infants, it is sometimes necessary to see a powerful miracle first. It is natural for faith to waver, and for moments to come when everything before us feels impossible. In such times, anyone would long to see God’s saving miracle happen immediately. However, mature believers—those who have received Jesus as Lord and have assurance of salvation—must first obey in faith and pursue holiness. And they must continue to hold fast to their faith in the Lord. To maintain this faith, we must remember—remember the unchanging character of God revealed in His Word. Are any of you standing before your own Jordan River today? Does the path ahead seem blocked and impossible? Then let us recall how God has led us thus far in our lives. For such people, I believe God will give not only the hope to endure even in impossible situations but also the strength to move forward.
