More Than Conquerors

31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;

    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

8:37 그러나 이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이기느니라

8:38 내가 확신하노니 사망이나 생명이나 천사들이나 권세자들이나 현재 일이나 장래 일이나 능력이나

8:39 높음이나 깊음이나 다른 어떤 피조물이라도 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없으리라

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

사람들은 로마서는 반지의 보석이고, 그 중에서 8장은 가장 반짝이는 다이아몬드 라고 말합니다.

그래서 톰 라이트는 로마서 8장의 결론은 우리 마음의 살아 있는 편지지에 불로 쓰인 것이라 말했습니다. 

오늘 본문에서 느낄 수 있는 불 같은 사랑을 예수님의 공생애 가운데 경험한 여성이 있습니다. 요한복음 8장에 등장하는 음행 중에 붙잡혀 온 여인입니다. 예수님은 여인에게 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라(요 8:11)고 말씀하십니다.

구원에 대한 감격의 노래가 오늘 본문인 롬 8:31~39절이라면, 구원에 대한 실제적인 서사가 요한복음 8:1~11절입니다. 그녀는 그 시간에 사람들 앞에 창피를 당하게 되어 있었고, 그 수많은 삶의 고통과 고난 가운데 예수님을 만나야 했으며, 그리고 그 날 그 장소에서 예수를 만나 무엇으로도 끊을 수 없는 하나님의 사랑으로 구원을 받은 것입니다. 그래서 오늘 본문의 감격의 노래를 그녀가 불렀을 것이고, 이 감격의 노래는 바울과 더불어 이제 우리도 불러야 하는 것입니다.

People say Romans is the jewel of the Bible, and among its chapters, chapter 8 is the most brilliant diamond.That is why N.T. Wright once said the conclusion of Romans 8 is written on the living paper of our hearts with fire.

There was a woman in Jesus’ earthly ministry who experienced this fiery love described in today’s text. She is the woman caught in adultery in John 8. Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more” (John 8:11).If Romans 8:31–39 is the song of salvation’s joy, then John 8:1–11 is the real-life story of salvation. She was on the verge of being humiliated in front of the people; she had to face Jesus amid the deep pain and suffering of her life; and in that moment, in that place, she encountered Jesus and was saved by God’s love that nothing could separate her from. That is why she would have sung today’s song of joy. And together with Paul, we too must now sing this song of joy.

누구도 우리를 대적할 수 없습니다 (31~34절).

오늘 본문은 바울의 몇 가지 질문과 연속되는 답으로 구성됩니다. 어떤 학자들은 7개의 질문으로 보기도 하고, 어떤 학자는 6개, 또는 5개로 봅니다. 저는 본문을 “누구도 우리를 대적할 수 없습니다.” 와 “누구도 우리를 예수님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다.” 두 단락으로 나누어 살펴보겠습니다. 

먼저 누구도 우리를 대적할 수 없다는 명제입니다.

바울은 이 일, 즉 구원을 위해 삼위일체 하나님이 하신 일을 살펴본 후에 더 이상 할 말이 없다고 말합니다.

그저 감격하고 감사할 것 밖에는 할 것이 없다는 것입니다. 그리고 나서 누구도 우리를 대적할 수 없다고 확신하며 말합니다. 만일 합당한 근거가 없다면 바울의 이런 주장은 공허한 자기 최면에 불과할 것입니다.

하지만 합당한 근거가 있습니다. 그것은 하나님이 우리를 위하신다는, 곧 우리를 사랑하신다는 전제입니다. 

하나님이 우리를 사랑한다면, 더 이상 우리의 적수는 없는 것입니다. 우주에서 가장 강하신 분이 우리를 사랑하시어 우리 편이 되신다면, 과연 누가 우리를 대적하겠습니까?

그렇다면 어떻게 하나님이 우리를 위하시는지. 곧 사랑하시는지 확신할 수 있을까요? (31)

너무도 명확합니다. 이미 아들을 아끼지 않으신 하나님은 모든 것을 우리에게 주십니다(32).

재판장이신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하시고, 의롭다 하신다면 과연 누가 우리를 고발할 수 있겠습니까? (33)

물론 하나님이 그냥 당신의 권위로 우리의 무죄를 주장하는 것이 아닙니다.

하나님은 아들을 우리를 위하여 십자가에 내어 주심으로 이미 모든 공의를 충족시키신 것입니다.

그러므로 더 이상 누구도 하나님이 택하신 우리를 그 누구도 하나님의 법정에 고발할 수 없는 것입니다.

또한 누가 우리를 정죄할 수 있을까요? (34) 예수님이 음행하다 잡혀 온 여인에게 나도 너를 정죄하지 않는다고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 당신이 질 십자가의 은혜로 그녀를 미리 용서하신 것입니다. 예수님은 우리의 과거의 죄는 물론이고, 현재의 죄, 그리고 미래에 범할 죄까지 다 용서하셨습니다.

마지막 날 밤 제자들의 발을 씻기신 것은 이미 그들이 예수님을 배신할 죄까지 다 용서하신 것입니다.

사실 유다의 죄까지도 용서하셨습니다. 다만 유다가 진정한 회개를 하지 않은 것입니다. 

예수님은 우리의 죄를 용서하시기 위해 십자가에 죽으시고, 부활하시어, 승천하신 후 보좌 우편에서 우리를 위해 중보하시는 분입니다. 그러므로 우리는 범죄함으로 인하여 죄책감에 빠지거나 두려워할 필요가 없습니다. 그저 주님 앞에 나와 진심으로 회개한다면 주님은 나도 너를 정죄하지 않는다고 선포하십니다.

No One Can Be Against Us (vv. 31–34)

Today’s passage is structured around a series of questions and answers that Paul gives. Some scholars count seven questions, others six, still others five. I will reflect on the text in two sections:

1. No one can be against us.

2. No one can separate us from the love of Jesus.

First, the truth that no one can be against us.

Paul says that after reflecting on the work of the Triune God for our salvation, there is nothing left to say. There is nothing to do but to marvel and give thanks. And so he declares with assurance: No one can be against us. If this had no real foundation, his words would be nothing more than hollow self-hypnosis.

But there is solid ground: the truth that God is for us—God loves us.If God loves us, then we have no real enemy. If the most powerful One in the universe loves us and is on our side, then who could possibly be against us?

But how can we be certain that God is for us—that He loves us? (v. 31)The answer is crystal clear: He who did not spare His own Son will surely give us all things (v. 32).If God the Judge loves us and has declared us righteous, then who can bring any charge against us? (v. 33)

Of course, this is not God declaring us innocent by arbitrary authority. God has already satisfied perfect justice by giving His Son to the cross on our behalf. Therefore no one can bring a charge against God’s chosen ones in His courtroom.

And who is to condemn us? (v. 34) Jesus told the woman caught in adultery, “Neither do I condemn you.” He forgave her in advance by the grace of the cross He was going to bear. Jesus has forgiven not only our past sins, but also our present sins, and even the sins we will commit in the future.

When He washed the disciples’ feet on the night of His arrest, He was already forgiving even the sins of betrayal that they were about to commit. In fact, even Judas’ sin was covered by His forgiveness—but Judas did not come to true repentance.

Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins, rose again, ascended, and now intercedes for us at the right hand of the Father. Therefore, when we fall into sin, we do not need to remain crushed by guilt or paralyzed by fear. If we simply come to Him with true repentance, He proclaims: “Neither do I condemn you.”

누구도 우리를 예수님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다 (35~39절).

바울은 세상의 그 무엇도, 그 누구도 우리를 예수님의 이 사랑에서 끊을 수 없다고 확신하며 말합니다.

이 사랑은 우리를 구원하시기 위해 행하신 십자가와 부활의 사랑을 말하는 것입니다.

바울은 우리의 신앙을 위협하는 7가지를 열거합니다. 환난은 이어 나오는 나머지 6가지 것을 대표하는 것으로 고난과 같은 의미입니다. 곤고는 행동이 제한된 상태를 의미하는 것으로 바울이 옥에 갇힌 것을 생각하며 말한 것입니다. 박해는 해를 가하는 것을 말하고, 기근은 굶주림을, 적신은 헐벗음을 의미합니다. 위험이나 칼은 결국 순교까지 의미합니다.

바울은36절에서 시편 44:22절을 인용하여 주를 위하여 죽게 될 정도 고난을 당할 것을 말합니다. 그리고 바울은 이어서 이 모든 환난을 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 넉넉히 이긴다(37)고 외칩니다. 만일 저 같은 목사가 이런 말을 하면 아무 힘이 없을 것입니다. 그런데 바울은 이미 자신이 당한 환난과 고난을 열거한 것입니다. 그리고 로마 성도들에게 죽임 같은 고난을 당할 것인데, 염려하지 말라는 것입니다.

왜요? 아무것도 우리를 그리스도의 사랑, 곧 구원에서 끊을 수 없고, 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 넉넉히 이기기 때문입니다. 이것은 바울이 이미 경험한 것입니다. 그래서 확신에 차 있습니다.

다시 한번 바울은 확신하며 선포합니다. 사망, 생명, 천사, 권세들, 현재 일, 장래 일, 능력이나, 높음이나 깊음이나 다른 어떤 피조물이라도 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다! 세상 그 무엇도 우리를 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없다는 것입니다.

No One Can Separate Us from the Love of Christ (vv. 35–39)

Paul declares with confidence that nothing in this world, and no one, can separate us from the love of Christ.This love refers to the love shown in the cross and resurrection by which He saved us.

Paul lists seven threats that might endanger our faith.

• Tribulation serves as a general term representing the rest.

• Distress refers to being restricted, as when Paul was imprisoned.

• Persecution means harm inflicted by others.

• Famine is hunger.

• Nakedness is lack of clothing.

• Danger and sword ultimately refer to martyrdom.

In verse 36, Paul quotes Psalm 44:22 to show that suffering, even to the point of death for God’s sake, is to be expected. And then he triumphantly cries out that in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (v. 37).

If a pastor like me were to say such words, they might carry little weight. But Paul was recounting his own lived experiences of suffering and hardship. He was telling the Roman believers that they too would face suffering—even death—but they need not fear.

Why not? Because nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, which is our salvation, and because through Him who loves us we are more than conquerors. Paul had already experienced this himself, and so he spoke with absolute conviction.

Once again, Paul declares with certainty: Neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord! Nothing in all the world can separate us from the love of God.

자꾸 평탄하고, 행복한 삶을 추구하는 것을 기독교라고 착각하면 안 됩니다. 그것은 처음부터 잘못된 것입니다. 물론 일부러 고난을 만들어 낼 필요는 없습니다. 하지만 하나님이 디자인한 성도, 자녀의 삶은 때론 고난이 있어도 그것을 넉넉하게 이기는 강한 용사의 삶입니다.

우리가 두려워해야 할 것은 세상이 아닙니다. 바로 하나님입니다. 그분이 나를 사랑하신다는 믿음만 있으면 우리의 구원은 확실합니다. 어떻게 확신합니까? 아들 예수가 십자가에 죽으시고 부활하신 것을 믿음으로 확신합니다. 이미 하나님의 공의를 충족하여 누구도 우리를 대적하거나 고발하거나 정죄할 수 없습니다.

그러므로 더 이상 죄책감에 사로잡힐 필요도 없습니다.

다만 구원받은 자로서 합당한 거룩의 삶을 살아야 합니다. 이것은 하나님을 위한 것이 아니라, 죄책감에 사로 잡히기 쉬운 우리 자신을 위해서 죄를 피해야 합니다. 만일 죄를 범할 경우에는 십자가를 믿는 믿음으로 회개하면 됩니다. 누가 우리를 그 사랑에서 끊을 수 있겠습니까?!

이 불같은 사랑을 우리 마음의 편지지에 기록하고, 바울처럼 노래하는 한사랑 성도 되기를 축복합니다!

We must not confuse Christianity with the pursuit of smooth, happy lives. That idea is mistaken from the start. Of course, we do not need to go looking for suffering on purpose. But the life of a believer, a child of God, as God has designed it, is sometimes marked by suffering—but it is the life of a strong warrior who overcomes through Christ.

What we must fear is not the world, but God. As long as we hold fast to the faith that He loves us, our salvation is certain. And how do we know this? We are assured by believing that His Son Jesus died on the cross and rose again. God’s justice has already been satisfied. No one can accuse us, oppose us, or condemn us.

Therefore, we no longer need to be trapped in guilt. Instead, we must live a holy life worthy of the salvation we have received. This holiness is not for God’s sake, but for our own sake—so that we will not fall easily into guilt. And if we do fall into sin, we need only repent in faith, trusting in the cross.

Who, then, can separate us from His love?!

May this fiery love be written on the paper of our hearts, and may we, like Paul, sing of it. May you be such believers, filled with this one great love.
