Behold the Glory of the Most Holy God Who Returns to His People (겔/Ezk 43:1~12)

1 Then the man brought me to the gate facing east, 2 and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory. 3 The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the Kebar River, and I fell facedown. 4 The glory of the Lord entered the temple through the gate facing east. 5 Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.

6 While the man was standing beside me, I heard someone speaking to me from inside the temple. 7 He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever. The people of Israel will never again defile my holy name—neither they nor their kings—by their prostitution and the funeral offerings[b] for their kings at their death. 8 When they placed their threshold next to my threshold and their doorposts beside my doorposts, with only a wall between me and them, they defiled my holy name by their detestable practices. So I destroyed them in my anger. 9 Now let them put away from me their prostitution and the funeral offerings for their kings, and I will live among them forever.

10 “Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their sins. Let them consider its perfection, 11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.

12 “This is the law of the temple: All the surrounding area on top of the mountain will be most holy. Such is the law of the temple.

Introduction

Yesterday, we saw how God distinguished between the holy and the common so that He might dwell in the midst of His people. Today’s passage reveals the breathtaking moment when that very God returns to His people.

God returns to this new temple in the exact same manner as He had previously departed. And now, He promises that He will live among them forever. However, there is a condition—a covenant requirement attached to this promise: this declaration will be fulfilled when they look upon the most holy temple of God, feel deep shame for all their past sins, cast away their former practices, and faithfully keep God’s laws and statutes.

Today, I would like to share a message titled: “Behold the Glory of the Most Holy God Who Returns to His People.”

1. The God Who Returns to His People (vv. 1–9)

First, let us look at the God who returns to His people.

In verse 1, the heavenly guide leads Ezekiel to the gate facing east. The east gate was the very last location where the glory of God had paused as He departed from Jerusalem. Yet now, through that exact same east gate, the glory of God makes its triumphant return!

A building’s completion is not merely about finishing the physical structure; a building is truly completed only when its owner moves in. Likewise, the complete restoration of the temple is finalized when God—the true Owner of the temple—returns and takes up residence within it once again.

Verse 2 paints a vivid picture of this moment:

“And I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory.”

Audibly, God’s glory resounds like the majestic roar of cascading waters. Visually, even the earth—which has no light of its own—glows brightly, reflecting His divine radiance.

In verse 3, Ezekiel notes that this awe-inspiring vision was identical to the visions he had seen before: both when God came to destroy the city and when he saw Him by the Kebar River. The God who departed from the temple and visited His exiles in Babylon is the very same God who is now returning.

In verse 4, the glory of the LORD enters the temple through the east gate. In verse 5, the Spirit lifts Ezekiel up into the inner court, allowing him to behold the temple filled with the glory of the LORD.

It is as if a dynamic camera angle captures the overwhelming arrival of God's glory from above and then shifts perspective to reveal the entire sanctuary brimming with His presence. Just as the glory of the LORD filled Moses’ Tabernacle and Solomon’s Temple, the same radiant glory now completely fills this new temple. Ezekiel receives a front-row, IMAX-like view of this magnificent sight in real time!

When God’s glory departed from the former temple in Jerusalem, He paused multiple times, looking back with lingering grief. Yet the moment the holiness of the new temple is set apart, He rushes back to His people as if He had been eagerly anticipating this moment.

In verse 7, God declares:

“Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites forever.”

And again in verse 9:

“Then I will live among them forever.”

God’s intention is unmistakable: He desires to dwell among His people forever. The most holy LORD—the Creator of heaven and earth, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever—returns to His people to abide with them eternally. What a staggering promise!

2. The Condition: Feeling Shame for Sin and Keeping Holy Order (vv. 10–12)

However, there is a condition attached to this promise.

In verses 7 through 9, God points out that Israel and their kings had previously defiled His holy name through abominable practices, which led to their destruction. Such desecration must never happen again.

How must they live now? They must no longer bring pagan idols into the temple grounds or defile the sanctuary by erecting monuments to dead kings beside it. They must no longer build their own thresholds right next to God's threshold, treating the sacred temple grounds as their personal property or placing themselves on equal footing with God. All of these practices defile the supreme holiness of God's sanctuary.

God promises that when they put away these detestable practices: "Then I will live among them forever."

In verse 10, God commands Ezekiel: "Describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their sins. Let them consider its plan."

Verse 11 elaborates on this essential prerequisite: "And if they are ashamed of all they have done..."

Why would seeing the vision of the temple cause them to feel ashamed of their sins? Because this temple is most holy.

Verse 12 emphasizes that the entire area surrounding the top of the mountain is "most holy," repeating twice: "This is the law of the temple." When we come face to face with the supreme holiness of God’s house, our own sinfulness is exposed, filling us with godly shame.

Recall Ezekiel's own response when confronted with the radiant glory of God in verse 3: "I fell face down."

Once we recognize our shame in the light of God's holiness, God instructs Ezekiel to have them study and measure the plans of the temple. Verse 11 explains what this means:

“Make known to them its design, its structure, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow all its regulations.”

In other words, God teaches His people the divine order required to maintain holiness, enabling them to be restored and to stand firmly once again.

Conclusion

Through today's passage, we behold the awe-inspiring return of God to His people. His glory is so brilliant that the earth—incapable of producing light on its own—shines brightly under the radiance of His presence, echoing the light of Creation.

The very same God who descended on Mount Sinai, filled Moses’ Tabernacle, and dwelt in Solomon’s Temple has returned to visit His people once more. And now, He promises to abide with them forever.

What does God require of us in return?

  • That His people look upon the supreme holiness of His glory and recognize their sins with deep humility and shame.

  • That we keep His statutes and laws, no longer harboring idols in our hearts or exalting ourselves above God.

When we do this, God promises: “I will live among them forever.”

Even today, God deeply desires to dwell among us eternally. Let us pray together, asking Him to reveal our hidden sinfulness in the light of His holiness, that we may be cleansed and restored to walk closely with Him. Amen.
