8:12 그 때에 솔로몬이 이르되 여호와께서 캄캄한데 계시겠다 말씀하셨사오나
8:13 내가 참으로 주를 위하여 계실 성전을 건축하였사오니 주께서 영원히 계실 처소로소이다 하고
12 Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; 13 I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.”
8:14 얼굴을 돌이켜 이스라엘의 온 회중을 위하여 축복하니 그 때에 이스라엘의 온 회중이 서 있더라
8:15 왕이 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 송축할지로다 여호와께서 그의 입으로 내 아버지 다윗에게 말씀하신 것을 이제 그의 손으로 이루셨도다 이르시기를
8:16 내가 내 백성 이스라엘을 애굽에서 인도하여 낸 날부터 내 이름을 둘 만한 집을 건축하기 위하여 이스라엘 모든 지파 가운데에서 아무 성읍도 택하지 아니하고 다만 다윗을 택하여 내 백성 이스라엘을 다스리게 하였노라 하신지라
14 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them. 15 Then he said:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. For he said, 16 ‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, but I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.’
8:17 내 아버지 다윗이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축할 마음이 있었더니
8:18 여호와께서 내 아버지 다윗에게 이르시되 네가 내 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축할 마음이 있으니 이 마음이 네게 있는 것이 좋도다
8:19 그러나 너는 그 성전을 건축하지 못할 것이요 네 몸에서 낳을 네 아들 그가 내 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축하리라 하시더니
17 “My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 19 Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’
8:20 이제 여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 이루시도다 내가 여호와께서 말씀하신 대로 내 아버지 다윗을 이어서 일어나 이스라엘의 왕위에 앉고 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축하고
8:21 내가 또 그 곳에 우리 조상들을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내실 때에 그들과 세우신 바 여호와의 언약을 넣은 궤를 위하여 한 처소를 설치하였노라
20 “The Lord has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 21 I have provided a place there for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.”
솔로몬의 기도 (12-13절)
주님의 영광이 구름 형태로 성전을 가득 메웠을 때, 솔로몬은 성전의 완성에 대한 감사의 기도를 드렸습니다. 그는 12-13절에서 이렇게 시작했습니다:
"여호와께서 캄캄한데 계시겠다 말씀하셨사오나 내가 참으로 주를 위하여 계실 성전을 건축하였사오니 주께서 영원히 계실 처소로소이다 ."
솔로몬이 주님이 캄캄한 속에 거하시리라고 한 말의 의미는 무엇일까요? 여기서 "캄캄함"은 단순히 어두운 곳을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 구름이 가득 찬 어두움, 다시말해 하나님의 임재를 상징합니다. 이 표현은 광야에서 이스라엘 백성들 사이에 짙은 구름으로 나타나셨던 하나님의 모습을 솔로몬이 반영한 것입니다. 우리는 구약 성서 전반에 걸쳐 하나님이 어둠 속에서 나타나시는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 신명기 4:11에서는 "너희가 가까이 나아와서 산 아래에 서니 그 산에 불이 붙어 불길이 충천하고 어둠과 구름과 흑암이 덮였는데."라고 말합니다. 또한 출애굽기 20:21에서는 "백성은 멀리 서 있고 모세는 하나님이 계신 흑암으로 가까이 가니라."라고 합니다. 하나님이 시내산에서 번개, 천둥, 나팔 소리와 함께 어둠 속에서 이스라엘 백성에게 언약을 주실 때, 백성들은 접근하기를 두려워했습니다. 오직 모세만이 하나님의 어두운 임재 가까이 갔습니다. 이는 하나님이 신비롭고 거룩한 존재임을 나타냅니다. 그리고 하나님이 구름으로 덮여 있는 이유는 무엇일까요? 그것은 하나님이 너무 거룩하고 완벽하시기 때문에, 우리 같은 죄 많은 자가 하나님을 보면 즉시 죽을 것이기 때문입니다. 그러므로 하나님께서 계실 때 이스라엘 백성은 하나님을 볼 수는 없었지만, 하나님은 구름을 통해 자신을 나타내셨습니다.
그러나 이제 솔로몬은 하나님이 그 어두운 곳에 머무르지 말고, 자신이 지은 이 성전에 영원히 거하시기를 요청합니다. 이전에 하나님은 접근하기 어려운 신비롭고 위엄 있는 존재였지만, 이제 솔로몬은 성전에서 그분의 영원한 임재를 요청합니다.
Solomon's prayer (verses 12-13)
When the glory of the Lord filled the temple in the form of a cloud, Solomon offered a prayer of thanks for the completion of the temple. He started by saying this in verses 12-13:
“The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud; I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.”
What did Solomon mean by saying that the Lord would dwell in darkness. Here, "darkness" does not just mean a dark place but refers to a dense, pitch-black darkness filled with clouds, symbolizing God's presence. This expression by Solomon reflects the way God appeared among the Israelites in the wilderness, shrouded in dense clouds. We see God appearing in darkness throughout the Old Testament. In Deuteronomy 4:11, it says “You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.” Also in Exodus 20:21, it says: “The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.” When God gave His covenant to the Israelites on Mount Horeb amid thunder, lightning, the sound of trumpets, and darkness, the people were too afraid to approach. Only Moses went near the dark presence of God. This is referring to God being a mysterious and holy being. And why was God covered with clouds? Because God was so holy and perfect that if our sinful selves see God, we would die instantly. Therefore, when God was present, although the Israelites could not see Him, He showed Himself through clouds.
However, Solomon now asks that God not stay in that dark place but dwell forever in this temple he have built. Previously, God was an unapproachable, mysterious, and majestic being, but now Solomon requests His eternal presence in the temple.
하나님의 은혜 (14-21절)
그리고 솔로몬은 이스라엘에 모인 모든 백성들 앞에 서서 그들을 하나님께 찬양하게 합니다.
얼굴을 돌이켜 이스라엘의 온 회중을 위하여 축복하니 그 때에 이스라엘의 온 회중이 서 있더라 왕이 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 송축할지로다 여호와께서 그의 입으로 내 아버지 다윗에게 말씀하신 것을 이제 그의 손으로 이루셨도다 이르시기를(14-15절)
솔로몬은 하나님께 찬양하는 이유를 하나님이 친히 다윗에게 약속한 것을 이루셨기 때문이라고 말합니다. "그의 입으로"는 하나님이 먼저 말씀하시고 약속을 하셨음을 의미하고, "그의 손으로"는 솔로몬의 힘이 아니라 하나님의 힘과 도움으로 성전이 지어졌고, 하나님의 약속이 이루어졌음을 보여줍니다. 솔로몬이 여기서 말하고 있는 하나님의 말씀과 약속은 사무엘하 7장에 있는 다윗과의 언약입니다. 하나님은 사무엘하 7장 11절b에 "여호와가 또 네게 이르노니 여호와가 너를 위하여 집을 짓고"라고 약속하셨습니다. 솔로몬은 다윗이 준비하고 자신과 백성들이 성전을 지었지만, "그의 손으로" 다시 말해 하나님이 이스라엘을 위해 세우신 은혜의 성전이라고 인정합니다.

Grace of God (verses 14-21)
And Solomon then stands in front of all the people of Israel gathered at the temple and calls them to praise God.
While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them. Then he said: “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his own hand has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David.” (V.14-15)
Solomon states the reason to praise God as because God has fulfilled what he promised with his own mouth to my father David. "with His own mouth" indicates that God is the one who first spoke and made the promise, and "with His own hand" shows that it was not by Solomon's power but by the power of God and His help that built the temple, fulfilling God's promise. The word and promise of God that Solomon refers to here is the Davidic covenant found in 2 Samuel 7. God promises in 2 Samuel 7:11b “The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you” Solomon acknowledges that even though David prepared and he and the people built the temple, it was God "with His hands" who accomplished it, indicating that the temple was not built by Israel for God but established by God for His grace and to be with Israel.
Solomon continues praising God, narrating the process through which God fulfills His promises.
‘Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, but I have chosen David to rule my people Israel.’ (V.16)
하나님은 다윗을 선택하여 이스라엘의 왕으로 세웠습니다. 하나님이 다윗을 이스라엘의 왕으로 세운 이유는 하나님의 이름에 합당한 집을 짓기 위함이었습니다. 이 계획의 일부로 지어진 성전은 하나님이 이스라엘을 이집트에서 인도해 낸 날부터 특별하고 구별된 장소임을 보여줍니다.
솔로몬은 성전이 다윗이 아니라 자신에 의해 지어졌던 이유를 설명합니다.
내 아버지 다윗이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축할 마음이 있었더니 여호와께서 내 아버지 다윗에게 이르시되 네가 내 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축할 마음이 있으니 이 마음이 네게 있는 것이 좋도다(17-18절)
다윗은 하나님을 위한 성전을 짓고 싶어했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 다윗이 성전을 짓지 못하게 하셨습니다. 그 이유는 다윗이 하나님 앞에서 너무 많은 피를 흘렸기 때문입니다. 하나님은 다윗의 아들이 성전을 짓게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님이 다윗에게 성전 건축을 허락하지 않으셨지만, 다윗의 마음을 긍정적으로 보셨습니다. 이는 다윗이 성전을 짓지 못한 것이 하나님이 다윗을 불쾌하게 여겼기 때문이 아니라 하나님의 뜻 때문이었음을 나타냅니다. 그러나 하나님은 다윗에게 약속을 하셨고 솔로몬을 통해 자신의 계획과 약속을 이루셨습니다.
God chose David and made him the ruler over Israel. The reason God set David as king over Israel was to build a house worthy of His name. The temple, built as part of this plan, shows that it has been a special and distinct place from the day God led Israel out of Egypt.
Solomon then explains why the temple was built by himself and not David in verses 17-18
“My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’
David wanted to build a temple for God. However He did not allow David to build the temple. The reason was that David had shed too much blood before God. Instead, God said that David's son would build the temple. Although God did not permit David to build the temple, He regarded David's desire to build it favorably, indicating that David's inability to build the temple was not because God viewed David unfavorably but because it was God's will that prevented him from building it. However, God made a promise to David and fulfilled His plan and promise through Solomon.
모든 것에는 하나님의 때가 있습니다. 하나님은 그분이 선택하신 사람들을 통해 그분의 때에 그분의 일을 이루십니다. 그러므로 우리의 이유와 목적보다는 하나님의 때와 방법을 찾고 기다리는 것이 중요합니다. 우리가 기도를 할 때 만약에 우리의 기도가 응답되지 않는다고해서 하나님께서 우리의 마음과 태도를 거부하는 것도 아니고, 하나님이 우리의 기도를 듣지 않는 것도 아닙니다. 때때로 하나님은 우리의 기도에 응답하시지만, 어쩔 때에는 우리의 생각이 하나님의 때와 방법이 다를 수 있기 때문에 응답하지 않으십니다.
다윗은 하나님을 위한 성전을 지을 수 없었지만, 하나님은 다윗의 마음을 긍정적으로 보셨습니다. 마찬가지로 우리의 기도가 응답되지 않는다고 해서 하나님이 우리의 마음과 태도를 모르시는 것은 아닙니다. 하나님의 뜻이라면, 그분은 반드시 그분의 때와 방법으로 이루실 것입니다.
솔로몬은 하나님이 다윗에게 하신 약속이 이루어졌음을 고백합니다.

There is a time for everything with God. God accomplishes His work in His time through His chosen people. Therefore, it is important for us to seek and wait for God's timing and methods rather than our reasons and purposes. Although we pray with specific requests, it does not mean that God rejects our heart and attitude if He does not respond to our prayers, nor does it mean that God does not desire our requests. Sometimes God answers our prayers, but other times He does not respond because our thoughts may differ from God's timing and methods.
Although David could not build the temple for God, God regarded David's heart favorably, just as our unanswered prayers do not mean that God does not know our hearts and attitudes. If it is God's will, He will surely accomplish it in His time and way.
Solomon now confesses that the promise God made to David has been fulfilled.
“The Lord has kept the promise he made: I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. I have provided a place there for the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.” (V.20-21)
솔로몬은 하나님의 이름을 위한 성전을 짓고 왕위에 오른 것이 하나님의 약속대로 이루어졌음을 고백합니다. 솔로몬은 자신이 특별한 자격이나 공로 때문이 아니라 하나님의 뜻과 은혜와 도움으로 이 자리에 올랐음을 인정합니다.
마찬가지로 바울은 고린도전서 15장 10절에서 이렇게 증언합니다: "그러나 내가 나 된 것은 하나님의 은혜로 된 것이니 내게 주신 그의 은혜가 헛되지 아니하여 내가 모든 사도보다 더 많이 수고하였으나 내가 한 것이 아니요 오직 나와 함께 하신 하나님의 은혜로라”
우리가 지금 있는 그대로인 것은 우리의 의지나 결정이 아니라 하나님의 은혜로 인한 것입니다. 우리는 그분의 은혜로 하나님의 주권 아래 살아가고 있습니다. 여기에 있는 우리의 존재, 그분의 말씀을 듣고 기도하며, 우리에게 맡겨진 역할로 하나님의 자녀로 살아가는 것은 우리가 더 나은 사람이거나 뛰어나서가 아니라 하나님이 우리를 사용하시기로 선택하셨기 때문입니다. 솔로몬이 이스라엘의 왕이 되어 성전을 지을 수 있었던 것처럼, 또 하나님의 허락과 도움으로 이루어진 것처럼, 우리도 솔로몬과 같이 오늘 우리들의 삶 속에서 하나님의 은혜를 고백해야 합니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 많은 은혜를 주신 것에 대한 믿음의 고백을 드리며, 하나님의 은혜와 도움을 구하는 새벽이 되길 축복합니다.
Solomon confesses that his ascent to the throne and the building of the temple for God's name were accomplished as God promised. Solomon acknowledges that he was chosen not because of his own qualifications or special merits but because it was God's will and by God's grace and help that he came to this position.
Similarly, Paul testifies in 1 Corinthians 15:10: “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”
It is by God's grace, not by our will or decision, that we are who we are. We live under God's sovereignty by His grace. Our presence here, listening to His word and praying, and living as God's children in the roles entrusted to us, are not because we are better or more excellent but because God has chosen to use us. Just as Solomon became king of Israel and was able to build the temple because God permitted and helped him, we, like Solomon, should confess God's grace in our lives today. May this day be blessed as we seek God's grace and help and offer a confession of faith to God who has given us so much grace.
