Ezekiel 36:16–31 (ESV)

The Lord’s Concern for His Holy Name

16 The word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity. 18 So I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols with which they had defiled it. 19 I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them. 20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’ 21 But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. 23 And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. 24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 28 You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. 29 And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you. 30 I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations.

Introduction: The Value of a Name

When I recently sent my children to Korea for a short visit, I had to teach them a few rules of Korean etiquette. In particular, I instructed them on how to answer if someone asked for the name of a family elder. For example, if their grandfather's name were "Chul-Soo Kim," they shouldn't simply say, "His name is Chul-Soo Kim." Instead, they were taught to say, "His honorific name is Kim, Chul, and Soo."

In Korean culture, using honorific language and enunciating each character of an elder's name is a way to express reverence and respect, as directly blurting out an elder's name is considered impolite.

If even human names require such reverence, how much more so the name of God?

In yesterday's passage, God declared a glorious restoration for His people. Today's text explains why they were judged in the first place and why God now chooses to restore them. God explicitly reveals that He acts not for their sake, but solely for the sake of His holy name.

Though this reason might seem paradoxical at first, it is precisely why we have unshakeable hope. Today, I want to share a message titled: "For the Sake of His Name: Both Judgment and Restoration."

1. Israel's Failure Profaned the Name of God

How did Israel fail? Verses 17 and 18 say:

“When the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like the uncleanness of a woman's monthly period in my sight. So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land...”

Their sinful actions defiled the land God had promised them. Unrighteousness and violence were poured out upon the land. Just as in Genesis, where the blood of innocent Abel cried out to God from the ground, the land groaned under Israel's injustice.

Furthermore, verse 18 tells us that they defiled themselves "with their idols." Like a spouse committing adultery, they turned away from God and defiled themselves through idolatry.

Consequently, as verse 19 describes, they were judged "according to their conduct and their actions"—driven from their homeland and scattered among the nations. Israel's exile was the direct result of their thorough moral and spiritual failure.

However, verse 20 reveals the tragic consequence of their exile: God's "holy name was profaned among the nations where they went." The surrounding nations mocked them, saying: "These are the Lord's people, and yet they had to leave his land."

What did this mean in the ancient worldview? People believed gods were localized deities who protected their own territory and populace. To the surrounding nations, Israel's captivity implied that the Lord God was either too weak to protect His people or helpless to prevent them from being expelled from His land.

2. God Cares for the Honor of His Holy Name

Yet verse 21 declares: "I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone."

Therefore, God announces what He is about to do in verse 22:

“It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone.”

And in verse 23, God proclaims:

“'I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I show myself holy through you before their eyes.'”

God Himself declares that He will vindicate and sanctify His great name! By manifesting His holiness before all nations, He will make it known that He alone is Jehovah, the Sovereign Creator.

This truth is our greatest source of hope. Why? If our restoration depended on Israel's—or our own—repentance, merit, or performance, it could crumble at any moment. But because the work of restoration rests on the unchangeable character and honor of God's Name, it can never fail or be revoked!

3. For His Name's Sake, God Restores His People

While yesterday's passage promised physical and environmental restoration, today's text promises the internal, spiritual renewal of the covenant people living in the promised land.

  • Verse 24: Like a new Exodus, God will gather them from all countries and bring them back into their own land.

  • Verse 25: He will sprinkle clean water upon them, cleansing them from all their impurities and idolatry.

  • Verse 26: He promises to give them a new heart and put a new spirit in them—removing their heart of stone and giving them a heart of flesh.

Does this language of "water and the Spirit" sound familiar? Yes! It directly corresponds to Jesus' words in John 3 about being "born again of water and the Spirit." Through water and the Holy Spirit, God promises to bring about true spiritual rebirth.

This passage teaches us that softening a hardened heart is not accomplished through human effort, but through the sovereign work of God. As verse 27 states, it is only when God puts His Spirit within us that we are empowered to follow His decrees and keep His laws.

Then verse 28 affirms: "You will be my people, and I will be your God."

Furthermore, verse 31 reveals that when this complete restoration takes place, true repentance will overflow within us:

“'Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.'”

Conclusion: Approaching Him for the Sake of His Name

Let us conclude. For the sake of His own Name, God grants us spiritual rebirth through water and the Holy Spirit. His Spirit works within us, enabling us to live as His true people according to His word.

When this covenant is renewed, complete restoration visits our lives, leading us into genuine repentance amidst His overflowing abundance.

Why does He do all of this? All for the sake of His Name!

The reason God forgives us—unworthy as we are—and extends His grace first is not because of anything in us, but because of Who He is: His holy Name.

Therefore, we can boldly approach God today, relying entirely on His great and holy Name. This promise will surely be fulfilled. Believing this truth, let us draw near to Him with humble spirits, surrendering our hardened hearts to His sovereign grace.

Let us pray.
