Ezekiel 35:1–15 (NKRV)
Ezekiel 35:1–15 (ESV)
Prophecy Against Mount Seir
35 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3 and say to it, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the LORD. 5 Because you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment, 6 therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 I will make Mount Seir a waste and a desolation, and I will cut off from it all who come and go. 8 And I will fill its mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines those slain with the sword shall fall. 9 I will make you a perpetual desolation, and your cities shall not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
10 “Because you said, ‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will take possession of them’—although the LORD was there— 11 therefore, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will deal with you according to the anger and envy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And I will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I am the LORD.
“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; they are given us to devour.’ 13 And you magnified yourselves against me with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord GOD: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then they will know that I am the LORD.
Introduction: The Unexpected Interruption
If you heard yesterday's sermon, you will remember that from Ezekiel chapter 33 onward, the central theme of the book shifts to the restoration of Israel. Yesterday's passage spoke of God's covenant of peace through the prophecy of the One Shepherd—promising His people safety, abundance, and freedom.
Yet today, out of nowhere, we encounter a prophecy of judgment against Mount Seir. We might wonder: Didn't the judgment against foreign nations end in chapters 25 through 32? Why bring this up now? Just when the mood was lifted by wonderful promises of restoration, why interrupt this beautiful flow of blessing with a harsh judgment against Edom?
Why is this passage placed right between chapter 34 and chapter 36? It is because this judgment against Edom is the prerequisite for Israel's restoration. Today, I want to share a message titled: "The Prerequisite for Restoration."

1. The History of Hostility
First, to understand this passage, we need to know a bit about the history between Israel and Edom, represented here by Mount Seir. Let us look at verse 5 together:
“Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax...”
The phrase "ancient hostility" uses a word often translated as "everlasting" or "from ancient times." This reveals that Edom's animosity toward Israel was deeply rooted and long-standing. Edom's ancestor was Esau, while Israel's ancestor was Jacob. From the story of Esau and Jacob, we remember how deeply Esau hated Jacob and how profound the emotional rift was between the two brothers.
However, for the people of Judah in Ezekiel's time, there was an even deeper grievance against Edom. When Jerusalem fell to Babylon, Edom—a neighboring, brother nation—did not help Judah. Instead, they rejoiced over Judah’s tragedy and aided the Babylonians. They captured fleeing Israelites, handed them over to the sword, and looted the land left behind. This is why verse 5 says, "at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax"—referring directly to the moment Jerusalem was destroyed.
2. Addressing the Questions of the Exiles
To the captives in Babylon, yesterday’s covenant of peace might have seemed hard to believe. They likely thought, “How can God promise us restoration and a land of peace when the very enemies who hate us are currently occupying our land?”
Today’s passage is God's answer and guarantee to that exact question. This text is not merely an isolated decree of judgment upon Edom; it reveals God executing the essential prerequisite before fully restoring His people. Therefore, this passage is intentionally set in contrast to chapter 36, which we will look at tomorrow. While chapter 35 proclaims judgment on Mount Seir (Edom), chapter 36 proclaims blessing upon the mountains of Israel.
3. Perpetual Desolation and the Reasons for Judgment
If we were to summarize the judgment against Edom in one phrase, it would be perpetual desolation.
Verse 3: “I am against you, Mount Seir; I will stretch out my hand against you and make you a desolate waste.”
Verse 4: “I will turn your towns into ruins and you will be desolate.”
Verse 7: “I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste...”
Verse 9: “I will make you desolate forever... Then you will know that I am the Lord.”
Verses 14–15: “As you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
God repeatedly emphasizes that He will lay them waste. He explains three main reasons for this severe judgment:
First, they exploited their brother's suffering for personal gain and violence.
As we saw in verse 5, Edom delighted in shedding their brother’s blood. Therefore, in verse 6, God declares that bloodthirstiness will pursue them to the end. Verses 7 through 9 detail how this will unfold: verse 8 describes their mountains, hills, valleys, and ravines filled with those slain by the sword.
Second, they lusted after the land where God resides.
The land of Israel and Judah was given to them by God as an inheritance. Yet in verse 10, Edom boasts: "These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession of them." But the sentence that follows is chilling: "even though the Lord was there."
The temple in Jerusalem was burned, and the people were dragged away in chains. Yet the God of the covenant never abandoned the land He had promised. Therefore, Edom was committing sacrilege by attempting to usurp God's territory and sovereignty. Verses 12 and 13 emphasize that God heard every insult and boast they spoke against Him.
Third, as they rejoiced over their brother's desolation, so they will be made desolate.
In verse 11, God exposes their true heart: "I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them." He repeats this principle of retribution in verses 14 and 15: "While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. As you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you." When Edom is made desolate, the whole world will rejoice over them—a truly terrifying judgment.

Conclusion: Two Lessons for Us Today
Let us conclude. Today's passage reveals the necessary prerequisite for Israel's restoration: God's judgment upon Edom, who gloated over Judah's downfall and exploited a brother's weakness for gain.
This word leaves us with two important lessons today:
God will personally defeat every adversary that stands in the way of our complete restoration.
We must examine ourselves to see if we have ever, like Edom, rejoiced over a brother's pain or exploited someone's weakness for our own advantage.
May you remember these two truths today and live fully under the grace of God's complete restoration.
Let us pray.
