28:1 또 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

28:2 인자야 너는 두로 왕에게 이르기를 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 네 마음이 교만하여 말하기를 나는 신이라 내가 하나님의 자리 곧 바다 가운데에 앉아 있다 하도다 네 마음이 하나님의 마음 같은 체할지라도 너는 사람이요 신이 아니거늘

28:3 네가 다니엘보다 지혜로와서 은밀한 것을 깨닫지 못할 것이 없다 하고

28:4 네 지혜와 총명으로 재물을 얻었으며 금과 은을 곳간에 저축하였으며

28:5 네 큰 지혜와 네 무역으로 재물을 더하고 그 재물로 말미암아 네 마음이 교만하였도다

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart

    you say, “I am a god;

I sit on the throne of a god

    in the heart of the seas.”

But you are a mere mortal and not a god,

    though you think you are as wise as a god.

3 Are you wiser than Daniel?

    Is no secret hidden from you?

4 By your wisdom and understanding

    you have gained wealth for yourself

and amassed gold and silver

    in your treasuries.

5 By your great skill in trading

    you have increased your wealth,

and because of your wealth

    your heart has grown proud.

28:6 그러므로 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 네 마음이 하나님의 마음 같은 체하였으니

28:7 그런즉 내가 이방인 곧 여러 나라의 강포한 자를 거느리고 와서 너를 치리니 그들이 칼을 빼어 네 지혜의 아름다운 것을 치며 네 영화를 더럽히며

28:8 또 너를 구덩이에 빠뜨려서 너를 바다 가운데에서 죽임을 당한 자의 죽음 같이 바다 가운데에서 죽게 할지라

28:9 네가 너를 죽이는 자 앞에서도 내가 하나님이라고 말하겠느냐 너를 치는 자들 앞에서 사람일 뿐이요 신이 아니라

28:10 네가 이방인의 손에서 죽기를 할례 받지 않은 자의 죽음 같이 하리니 내가 말하였음이니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 하셨다 하라

6 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,

    as wise as a god,

7 I am going to bring foreigners against you,

    the most ruthless of nations;

they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom

    and pierce your shining splendor.

8 They will bring you down to the pit,

    and you will die a violent death

    in the heart of the seas.

9 Will you then say, “I am a god,”

    in the presence of those who kill you?

You will be but a mortal, not a god,

    in the hands of those who slay you.

10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised

    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

28:11 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 또 내게 임하여 이르시되

28:12 인자야 두로 왕을 위하여 슬픈 노래를 지어 그에게 이르기를 주 여호와의 말씀에 너는 완전한 도장이었고 지혜가 충족하며 온전히 아름다웠도다

28:13 네가 옛적에 하나님의 동산 에덴에 있어서 각종 보석 곧 홍보석과 황보석과 금강석과 황옥과 홍마노와 낭옥과 청보석과 남보석과 홍옥과 황금으로 단장하였음이여 네가 지음을 받던 날에 너를 위하여 소고와 비파가 준비되었도다

28:14 너는 기름 부음을 받고 지키는 그룹임이여 내가 너를 세우매 네가 하나님의 성산에 있어서 불타는 돌들 사이에 왕래하였도다

28:15 네가 지음을 받던 날로부터 네 모든 길에 완전하더니 마침내 네게서 불의가 드러났도다

28:16 네 무역이 많으므로 네 가운데에 강포가 가득하여 네가 범죄하였도다 너 지키는 그룹아 그러므로 내가 너를 더럽게 여겨 하나님의 산에서 쫓아냈고 불타는 돌들 사이에서 멸하였도다

28:17 네가 아름다우므로 마음이 교만하였으며 네가 영화로우므로 네 지혜를 더럽혔음이여 내가 너를 땅에 던져 왕들 앞에 두어 그들의 구경거리가 되게 하였도다

28:18 네가 죄악이 많고 무역이 불의하므로 네 모든 성소를 더럽혔음이여 내가 네 가운데에서 불을 내어 너를 사르게 하고 너를 보고 있는 모든 자 앞에서 너를 땅 위에 재가 되게 하였도다

28:19 만민 중에 너를 아는 자가 너로 말미암아 다 놀랄 것임이여 네가 공포의 대상이 되고 네가 영원히 다시 있지 못하리로다 하셨다 하라

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,

    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

13 You were in Eden,

    the garden of God;

every precious stone adorned you:

    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,

    topaz, onyx and jasper,

    lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.

Your settings and mountings[c] were made of gold;

    on the day you were created they were prepared.

14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,

    for so I ordained you.

You were on the holy mount of God;

    you walked among the fiery stones.

15 You were blameless in your ways

    from the day you were created

    till wickedness was found in you.

16 Through your widespread trade

    you were filled with violence,

    and you sinned.

So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,

    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,

    from among the fiery stones.

17 Your heart became proud

    on account of your beauty,

and you corrupted your wisdom

    because of your splendor.

So I threw you to the earth;

    I made a spectacle of you before kings.

18 By your many sins and dishonest trade

    you have desecrated your sanctuaries.

So I made a fire come out from you,

    and it consumed you,

and I reduced you to ashes on the ground

    in the sight of all who were watching.

19 All the nations who knew you

    are appalled at you;

you have come to a horrible end

    and will be no more.’”

            이솝 우화 중에 신상을 다르는 당나귀라는 우화가 있습니다. 어떤 사람이 신전에 바칠 아주 귀한 신의 조각상을 당나귀 등에 지우고 길을 떠났습니다. 마을 어귀에 도착하는데 지나가던 사람들이, 아, 글쎄,  당나귀 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 절을 하는 것이 아니겠습니까? 사람들이 자신에게 절을 하고 있다고 생각한 당나귀는 교만해져서 큰 소리를 내더니 더 이상 움직이려 하지 않았습니다. 길 한복판에 떡하니 서서 더 많은 절을 받겠다는 심산이었지요. 그러자 이 모습을 본 주인이 기가막혀서 당나귀에게 채찍질을 하며 소리쳤습니다. “아이고, 이 녀석아! 너는 사람들이 너한테 절을 하고 있다고 생각하는게냐? 네가 아니라 니 등에 짊어진 신상에게 절을 하는거야 이녀석아! 정신차려!” 자, 오늘의 말씀이 이 이야기와 참 비슷한 것 같습니다. 오늘의 본문은 두로의 왕에게 말씀하시는 하나님의 심판 예언을 다루고 있습니다. 두로의 왕은 하나님께서 맡기신 부귀영화를 마치 자신의 지혜로 이룬 것인양 교만하여 스스로를 신처럼 생각했습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 단도직입적으로 말씀하시지요. “너는 사람이요 신이 아니거늘.” 오늘은 이 두로 왕을 향한 심판의 메시지를 가지고 “교만한 청지기를 향한 심판” 이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Introduction: The Donkey Carrying the Statue

There is a famous fable by Aesop called The Donkey and the Idol.

A man placed a very precious, sacred statue of a deity on the back of his donkey to bring it to a temple in town. As they reached the entrance of the village, the passing townsfolk began to bow down and kneel reverently before the donkey.

Thinking that the people were kneeling to honor him, the donkey became utterly consumed with pride. He brayed loudly and refused to take another step, standing dead center in the middle of the road to demand even more adoration.

Seeing this absurdity, the donkey's owner shook his head, raised his whip, and shouted:

"You foolish beast! Do you really think these people are bowing to you? They aren't bowing to you—they're bowing to the divine statue on your back! Wake up!"

Today’s passage bears a striking resemblance to this fable. Our text delivers God’s prophetic judgment against the king of Tyre. God had entrusted the king of Tyre with immense wealth, power, and wisdom. Yet, the king became so arrogant that he acted as if he had accomplished all of it by his own intellect, eventually convincing himself that he was a god.

To him, God delivers a direct, piercing reality check: “You are a mere man and not a god.” Today, based on this message of judgment against the king of Tyre, I want to share a sermon titled “Judgment upon the Arrogant Steward.”

                  첫번째, 두로의 왕은 스스로를 지혜롭게 여기는 교만한 마음 때문에 하나님의 심판 가운데 처하게 되었습니다. 3-5절은 두로의 왕이 스스로를 얼마나 지혜롭게 여겼는지를 보여줍니다. 3절, 그는 당대에 가장 지혜롭다고 알려진 다니엘보다 스스로 지혜롭다고 말하였고, 4절, 그의 지혜와 총명으로 막대한 부를 축적하였습니다. 그러나 그 지혜로 얻는 재물과 부유함은 곧 그의 마음을 교만하게 만들었습니다. 5절 말씀 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “네 큰 지혜와 네 무역으로 재물을 더하고 그 재물로 말미암아 네 마음이 교만하였도다” 우리 흔히 아는 연예인 병이라는 병이 있습니다. 연예인들이 본인의 영향력과 인기에 정신이 나가서 어느 순간 자신을 평범한 일반인들과 ‘급이 다르다’고 여기는 병을 일컫는 말이지요. 인기 연예인들은 다 한 번씩 겪고 지나간다고 합니다. 그런데 두로왕의 교만함은 그 도를 넘었던 것 같습니다. 2절 말씀이 이렇게 말하고 있지요 “네 마음이 교만하여 말하기를 나는 신이라 내가 하나님의 자리 곧 바다 가운데에 앉아 있다 하도다” 두로 왕은 다른 사람들과 급이 다른 정도가 아니라 자신을 하나님과 동급으로 여겼습니다. 그런 그에게 하나님께서는 심판을 선고하십니다. 그 시작이 6절입니다. 함께 읽어보겟습니다. “그러므로 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 네 마음이 하나님의 마음 같은 체하였으니” 하나님께서 분명하게 심판의 이유를 말씀하고 계시지요. 스스로를 지혜롭게 여겨 하나님의 자리에 오르려 한 두로 왕은 7-10절 말씀까지의 심판을 받게 될 것입니다. 그것이 무엇입니까? 7절, 그들이 모르는 가장 강포한 이방인들이 몰려와 그가 자랑하던 지혜의 아름다운 것을 치며, 영화를 더럽히며, 8절, 그가 하나님의 자리에 앉아있었다고 말했던 바로 그 바다 가운데에서 죽게 될 것이라는 것입니다. 하나님의 메시지는 분명하십니다. 2절, “네 마음이 하나님의 마음 같은 체할지라도 너는 사람이요 신이 아니거늘.” 9절, “너를 치는 자들 앞에서 사람일 뿐이요 신이 아니라.” 스스로 하나님의 자리에 오르려한 두로의 왕의 최후는 치욕스러운 죽음임을 10절에서 확정하고 계시지요. 그런데 이 모습이 마치 하나님과 같이 되려고 선악과를 따먹은 아담과 비슷하지 않습니까?

1. Self-Proclaimed Wisdom and the Illusion of Deification

First, the king of Tyre brought God’s judgment upon himself because of a proud heart that considered itself supremely wise.

Verses 3 through 5 illustrate how wise the king of Tyre thought he was:

• Verse 3: He considered himself wiser than Daniel, who was renowned in that era as the pinnacle of wisdom.

• Verses 4–5: Through his wisdom and insight, he accumulated immense wealth and gold.

However, the very riches and prosperity gained through his wisdom ultimately poisoned his heart with pride. Let us read verse 5 together:

“By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, and because of your wealth your heart has grown proud.”

We often hear the phrase "celebrity disease"—a psychological trap where famous individuals get drunk on their own influence and popularity, eventually viewing themselves as being on a completely different level from ordinary people.

The pride of the king of Tyre, however, crossed every line imaginable. Verse 2 describes the magnitude of his delusion:

“In the pride of your heart you say, ‘I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas.’”

The king of Tyre did not just view himself as superior to other human beings; he considered himself equal to God Almighty.

To this delusional ruler, God pronounces judgment. Notice how God lays out the cause in verse 6:

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you think you are wise, as wise as a god...”

Because he considered himself wise enough to usurp the place of God, the king of Tyre faces the brutal judgment detailed in verses 7 through 10:

• Verse 7: God will bring the most ruthless of foreign nations against him to draw their swords against his beauty and defile his shining splendor.

• Verse 8: He will be cast down to the pit, dying a dreadful death right there in the "heart of the seas"—the very place where he boasted he sat on a divine throne.

God’s message is crystal clear:

• Verse 2: “...yet you are a mere man and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god.”

• Verse 9: “Will you then say, ‘I am a god,’ in the presence of those who kill you? You will be but a man, not a god, in the hands of those who slay you.”

In verse 10, God seals his fate, decreeing a shameful, uncircumcised death. Doesn't this trajectory remind you of Adam in the Garden of Eden, who ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in a desperate bid to become like God?

                  그래서 두번째, 11-19절의 말씀은 그 아담의 이야기를 차용하여 이 영화로웠던 두로의 왕이 그저 하나님께서 맡기신 것들을 지키는 자, 청지기였음을 보여줍니다. 그러나 그는 불의한 청지기, 강포한 청기지로 하나님께 범죄하여 심판을 받게 되는 것입니다. 14절의 말씀을 함께 읽겠습니다. “너는 기름 부음을 받고 지키는 그룹임이여 내가 너를 세우매 네가 하나님의 성산에 있어서 불타는 돌들 사이에 왕래하였도다.” 하나님께서 두로 왕을 ‘기름 부음을 받고 지키는 그룹’ 즉 하나님의 보냄을 받은 자라고 정의하고 계십니다. 재미있는 것은 앞의 2절의 말씀에서 두로 왕이라고 할 때에 그 왕이라는 단어가 우리가 흔히 쓰는 ‘왕’이라는 단어가 아니라 ‘누군가에게 권력을 위임받은 지도자’라는 단어라는 것입니다. 즉, 28장의 처음부터 지금까지 두로 왕은 스스로 힘과 권력을 가진 왕이 아니라 그저 하나님에 의해 세워진 청지기였다는 것입니다. 12-13절은 그의 영화와 지혜가 얼마나 대단했던 것인지 보여줍니다. 그러나 그것들은 모두 그에게 맡겨진 것이었지 그의 것이 아니었던 것입니다. 그것을 잊지 말았어야 했는데 교만하였던 그는 15절의 말씀처럼 마침내 그에게서 불의가 드러나고 맙니다. 그 불의를 무엇이라 말씀하십니까? 16절을 보니 “네 무역이 많으므로 네 가운데에 강포가 가득하여 네가 범죄하였도다 너 지키는 그룹아” 라고 말씀하고 계십니다. 그는 교만하여 자신이 청기지임을 잊고 마치 주인과 같이 행동하여 사람들에게 강포를 행한 것이었습니다. 두려운 것은 하나님께서 그의 죄목을 언급하시면서 그가 누구인지 다시 한 번 확인시켜 주신다는 것입니다. “강포가 가득하여 네가 범죄하였도다 ‘너 지키는 그룹아’” 그의 최후도 어제 보았던 말씀과 동일한 결말입니다. 19절을 보니 그 또한 만민중에 “공포의 대상이 되고… 영원히 다시 있지” 못할 것이라고 말씀하고 계십니다.

2. The Ruin of an Unfaithful Steward

This brings us to the second point. Verses 11 through 19 draw upon that Edenic imagery to reveal that this once-glorious king of Tyre was, in reality, nothing more than a steward—someone appointed by God to guard and manage His gifts. Yet, because he proved to be an unrighteous and violent steward, he sinned against God and fell under judgment.

Let us read verse 14 together:

“You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.”

God explicitly defines the king of Tyre as an “anointed guardian cherub”—one sent and established by God.

Interestingly, when the Hebrew text refers to the ruler of Tyre as "king" or "ruler" back in verse 2, it uses a term that denotes a leader whose authority is delegated by a higher power, rather than an absolute sovereign monarch. In other words, from the very beginning of chapter 28, the ruler of Tyre was never a self-made king with inherent power; he was simply a steward appointed by God.

Verses 12 and 13 detail the extraordinary extent of his glory, beauty, and wisdom. But every single bit of it was entrusted to him—it was never his to own. He was called to keep this truth at the forefront of his mind. Instead, corrupted by pride, unrighteousness was eventually found in him (v. 15).

What was this unrighteousness? Verse 16 exposes his sin:

“Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones.”

In his arrogance, he forgot his identity as a steward and began acting like the absolute owner, treating people with ruthless violence.

What is deeply sobering is how God re-emphasizes his true identity even while listing his crimes: “...and you sinned, O guardian cherub.” God confronts him with his original calling to remind him of how far he had fallen.

His ultimate fate mirrors the tragic conclusion we saw yesterday. Verse 19 concludes:

“...you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.”

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 두로의 왕은 엄청난 부와 권력으로 교만하여졌습니다. 마치 그 모든 것을 자신이 이룬 것인냥 스스로 지혜롭게 여겨 하나님의 자리에 오르려 하였습니다. 그 모든 것이 하나님께서 그에게 맡겨주신 것임을 잊을 때에 그는 하나님의 심판으로 그가 신이 아니라 사람일 뿐임을 그를 치는 자들을 통하여 알게된다고 하십니다. 또한 그가 그저 지키는 자, 청지기일 뿐임을 심판으로 알려주신다고 말씀하십니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 지금도 우리가 가진 알량한 것으로 마치 우리가 그 모든 결정권을 쥐고 있는 것처럼 살지는 않습니까? 우리에게 주신 모든 것, 그것은 하나님께서 잠시 우리에게 맡기신 것일 뿐입니다. 이것을 기억하셔서 교만한 청지기가 되지 아니하고 충성된 청지기의 삶을 사시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion: Living as Faithful Stewards

Let us conclude. The king of Tyre was blinded by immense wealth and power. Foolishly believing that he had achieved everything by his own wisdom, he attempted to ascend to the very throne of God.

When he forgot that everything he possessed was merely entrusted to him by God, God brought executioners to teach him a painful lesson: that he was merely a man, not a god, and that his true identity was nothing more than a guardian steward who had failed.

What about us today? Are we living as though we own ultimate authority over our lives, using whatever meager resources, talents, or positions we hold to play the role of master?

Everything we have—our breath, our wealth, our families, our talents—is simply on loan from God for a short season. May we never forget our place, avoiding the tragic path of the arrogant steward, and instead live out our days as humble, faithful stewards who honor the true Master.
