27:26 네 사공이 너를 인도하여 큰 물에 이르게 함이여 동풍이 바다 한가운데에서 너를 무찔렀도다

27:27 네 재물과 상품과 바꾼 물건과 네 사공과 선장과 네 배의 틈을 막는 자와 네 상인과 네 가운데에 있는 모든 용사와 네 가운데에 있는 모든 무리가 네가 패망하는 날에 다 바다 한가운데에 빠질 것임이여

27:28 네 선장이 부르짖는 소리에 물결이 흔들리리로다

27:29 노를 잡은 모든 자와 사공과 바다의 선장들이 다 배에서 내려 언덕에 서서

27:30 너를 위하여 크게 소리 질러 통곡하고 티끌을 머리에 덮어쓰며 재 가운데에 뒹굴며

27:31 그들이 다 너를 위하여 머리털을 밀고 굵은 베로 띠를 띠고 마음이 아프게 슬피 통곡하리로다

27:32 그들이 통곡할 때에 너를 위하여 슬픈 노래를 불러 애도하여 말하기를 두로와 같이 바다 가운데에서 적막한 자 누구인고

27:33 네 물품을 바다로 실어 낼 때에 네가 여러 백성을 풍족하게 하였음이여 네 재물과 무역품이 많으므로 세상 왕들을 풍부하게 하였었도다

27:34 네가 바다 깊은 데에서 하선한 때에 네 무역품과 네 승객이 다 빠졌음이여

27:35 섬의 주민들이 너로 말미암아 놀라고 왕들이 심히 두려워하여 얼굴에 근심이 가득하도다

27:36 많은 민족의 상인들이 다 너를 비웃음이여 네가 공포의 대상이 되고 네가 영원히 다시 있지 못하리라 하셨느니라

26 Your oarsmen take you

    out to the high seas.

But the east wind will break you to pieces

    far out at sea.

27 Your wealth, merchandise and wares,

    your mariners, sailors and shipwrights,

your merchants and all your soldiers,

    and everyone else on board

will sink into the heart of the sea

    on the day of your shipwreck.

28 The shorelands will quake

    when your sailors cry out.

29 All who handle the oars

    will abandon their ships;

the mariners and all the sailors

    will stand on the shore.

30 They will raise their voice

    and cry bitterly over you;

they will sprinkle dust on their heads

    and roll in ashes.

31 They will shave their heads because of you

    and will put on sackcloth.

They will weep over you with anguish of soul

    and with bitter mourning.

32 As they wail and mourn over you,

    they will take up a lament concerning you:

“Who was ever silenced like Tyre,

    surrounded by the sea?”

33 When your merchandise went out on the seas,

    you satisfied many nations;

with your great wealth and your wares

    you enriched the kings of the earth.

34 Now you are shattered by the sea

    in the depths of the waters;

your wares and all your company

    have gone down with you.

35 All who live in the coastlands

    are appalled at you;

their kings shudder with horror

    and their faces are distorted with fear.

36 The merchants among the nations scoff at you;

    you have come to a horrible end

    and will be no more.’”

            제가 고등학생 때에 일어난 일입니다. 아침에 학교를 가려고 집 문 밖을 나서면 매일같이 신문이 배달되어 있었습니다. 그런데 그 당시 신문 1면은 죄다 절대로 쓰러지지 않을 것만 같았던 대기업들이 부도가 났다는 뉴스로 가득 차 있었지요. 소주로 유명한 진로 그룹이라던지, 기아 자동차, 한라, 해태, 그리고 당시에는 정말 믿을 수 없었던 대우 그룹의 부도까지 마치 도미노 처럼 대기업들이 연쇄부도를 하는 장면을 목격할 수 있었습니다. 매일 같이 오늘은 어느 그룹이 부도가 나는 것일까 하고 두려울 정도로 하루 하루가 충격의 연속이었지요. 오늘 말씀이 바로 그런 상황인 것 같습니다. 에스겔 시대의 두로는 지중해 해상 무역을 장악하여 막대한 부와 영화를 누렸던 대표적인 해양 상업 제국이었습니다. 바로 어제 본문 말씀이 그것을 대변하고 있었지요. 5절부터 24절까지 두로가 누렸던 부국강병을 묘사하다가 그 정점을 찍었던 것이 바로 25절 입니다. “네가 바다 중심에서 풍부하여 영화가 매우 크도다.” 그러나 마치 IMF때의 대기업들처럼 절대로 쓰러지지 않을 것 같던 이 두로에게 하나님께서는 “네가 영원히 다시 있지 못하리라” 라고 예언하십니다. 그리고 그 예언을 “두로를 위한 슬픈 노래” 라고 명하십니다. 오늘은 이 “두로를 위한 슬픈 노래”가 무엇인지 함께 나누기를 원합니다.

Introduction: The Myth of the Unsinkable

This is an event from my high school years. Every morning, when I stepped out the front door to go to school, the daily newspaper would be waiting. During that particular time, the front page of the paper was constantly filled with shocking news of massive conglomerates—corporations everyone thought were absolutely invincible—going completely bankrupt.

From the Jinro Group (famous for soju) to Kia Motors, Hanla, Haitai, and eventually the Daewoo Group—a collapse that seemed utterly unbelievable at the time—we witnessed these giant corporate empires fall one after another like dominoes. It was a time of continuous shock, to the point where every single day felt terrifying, wondering which major corporation would collapse next.

Today's scripture presents us with a remarkably similar situation. In the days of Ezekiel, Tyre was a dominant maritime commercial empire that controlled the trade routes of the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying immense wealth and glory. Yesterday’s text vividly illustrated this power. After describing Tyre’s incredible wealth and military might from verses 5 through 24, the description reached its absolute peak in verse 25:

“...you were filled and heavily laden in the heart of the seas.”

Yet, just like those giant corporations during the IMF financial crisis, to this Tyre that looked as though it could never fall, God prophesies: “you... shall be no more forever.” God calls this prophecy "a lamentation—a sad song—for Tyre." Today, I want to share a message as we look closely at what this lamentation teaches us.

                  먼저 두로는 자신이 가지고 있던 부귀 영화, 그리고 막대한 군사력을 믿고 교만하였습니다. 어제의 말씀인 3절은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 두로야 네가 말하기를 나는 온전히 아름답다 하였도다.” 그리고 내일 보게 될 말씀인 28:2은 또 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “네 마음이 교만하여 말하기를 나는 신이라 내가 하나님의 자리 곧 바다 가운데에 앉아있다 하도다” 두로는 당시의 해상 무역을 장악하고 있었기에 바다 가운데가 곧 그들의 나와바리, 영토였습니다. 그런데 오늘 말씀 26절을 보면 이렇게 말씀하고 있지요. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “네 사공이 너를 인도하여 큰 물에 이르게 함이여 동풍이 바다 한가운데에서 너를 무찔렀도다.” 그들은 큰 물, 즉 바다 깊은 곳으로 나아가는데 아무런 거리낌이 없었습니다. 그곳은 그들에게는 가장 익숙한 장소였겠지요. 아무도 그들의 적수가 되질 않았을 것입니다. 그런데 그 바다 한 가운데서 그들을 무찌른 것이 무엇입니까? ‘동풍’입니다. 이 동풍은 하나님의 심판을 상징합니다. 그 증거로 출애굽기 14:21에 홍해를 가르실 때에 하나님께서 사용하셨던 것이 바로 이 동풍입니다. 출애굽기 15:8 에서는 이를 가르켜 모세가 이렇게 노래를 합니다. “주의 콧김에 물이 쌓이되” 즉, 이 동풍은 하나님의 신체와 직접적으로 연관되어 하나님께서 직접 심판을 하실 것을 암시하고 있는 것입니다. 27-28절을 보면 목록이 나오는데요 실로 처참하기 그지 없습니다. 그들이 자랑하던 것들 하나하나 그들이 자신들의 영토로 삼았던 바로 그 바다 한가운데에 모두 빠질 것이라 말씀하십니다. 이 목록들은 어제의 말씀 전체에 걸쳐서 기록된 이들의 자랑거리들이었습니다. 그러나 그들은 자신들이 가장 자랑하던 바로 그 곳에서 모두 수장되고 그들의 부르짖는 소리만이 물결을 타고 해변을 뒤흔들게 될 것입니다. 어제 말씀에서 나타난 부유함과 강병함이 크면 클수록 그들의 심판은 더욱 두려운 것이 되었습니다.

1. Pride Wrecked by the East Wind

First, Tyre became deeply arrogant, placing its absolute trust in its worldly wealth, glory, and immense military power. In verse 3 of yesterday's text, Tyre proudly proclaimed: “I am perfect in beauty.” Furthermore, in Ezekiel 28:2, we see the true depth of their arrogance:

“Your heart is proud, and you have said, ‘I am a god, I sit in the seat of the gods, in the heart of the seas...’”

Because Tyre dominated the maritime trade of their era, the open ocean was their home turf—their absolute territory. They felt completely invincible there. But look at how verse 26 of today's text shatters that illusion. Let us read it together:

“Your rowers have brought you out into the great waters; the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.”

They had absolutely no hesitation about venturing out into the "great waters"—the deep, treacherous parts of the sea. It was the place they were most familiar with, a place where they believed no one could ever match them. Yet, what was it that completely broke them right there in the heart of the ocean? It was the "east wind."

In the scriptures, the east wind consistently symbolizes God’s sovereign judgment.

• As historical proof, when God parted the Red Sea in Exodus 14:21, He drove the sea back using a strong east wind.

• In Exodus 15:8, Moses sings of this divine wind, saying: “At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up.”

This means the east wind is intimately connected to the breath of God Himself, implying that this destruction is not a natural disaster, but God’s direct, sovereign judgment upon Tyre.

Verses 27 and 28 provide a list of what sinks into the sea, and it is utterly devastating. Every single thing they boasted about—their riches, their merchandise, their mariners, their pilots, and their entire military force—sinks into the very heart of the ocean that they claimed as their territory. These were the exact things they took pride in. But they end up completely submerged in the very place they felt most secure, leaving nothing behind but the sound of their desperate wailing echoing across the waves to shake the distant shores. The greater their past wealth and strength, the more terrifying their ultimate judgment became.

                  자 그런데 이들을 향한 심판은 이들 만을 향한 것이 아니었습니다. 마치 거대한 대기업이 무너질 때에 함께 거래를 하던 다른 기업들이 연쇄 도산을 하듯이 이들의 패망을 보며 놀라고 두려워하는 사람들이 있었습니다. 그것이 29-32절의 말씀입니다. 29절, 두로와 거래를 하던 해안 지역 무역도시의 사람들이 다 배에서 내려서 언덕에 서서, 30절, 통곡하고 티끌을 머리에 쓰고 재 가운데에 뒹굽니다. 31절, 머리를 밀고 굵은베로 띠를 띠고 통곡한다고 합니다. 이것은 단순히 남의 불행에 충격을 받은 구경꾼의 모습이 아닙니다. 자신들의 생계와 인생이 걸려있는 배가 눈앞에서 무너져 내리는 것을 지켜보는 사람들의 깊은 절망입니다. 이들이 행하고 있는 행동들은 사실 이스라엘 사람들의 장례 관습과 정확히 일치하는 행동들입니다. 무슨 말입니까? 두로의 멸망은 그저 단순한 경제적인 손실 정도가 아니라 생명이 끊어지는 듯한 참혹한 죽음, 그 자체와 같다는 것을 말해주고 있는 것입니다. 32절에서 그들을 애도하는 노래를 무어라고 부릅니까? “너를 위한, 즉, 두로를 위한 슬픈 노래”라고 부릅니다.

2. The Chain Reaction of Collapse

This devastating judgment, however, did not just affect Tyre alone. Just as the collapse of a massive conglomerate triggers a chain reaction that bankrupts all its smaller supplier companies, there were many who watched Tyre's ruin with absolute terror and dread. We see this in verses 29 through 32.

In verse 29, all the seafaring merchants from neighboring coastal cities leave their ships and stand on the shore. Verse 30 tells us that they wail aloud, cast dust on their heads, and wallow in ashes. In verse 31, they shave their heads and put on sackcloth, weeping bitterly.

A Cry of Deep Despair These people are not just detached onlookers shocked by someone else's misfortune. This is the profound, suffocating despair of people watching the very ship that carried their livelihoods, their futures, and their entire lives sink right before their eyes.

Interestingly, the actions they take—casting dust, rolling in ashes, shaving heads, and wearing sackcloth—mirror the exact burial and mourning customs of the ancient Near East. What does this tell us? It means the fall of Tyre was not felt as a mere economic loss or a bad business cycle; it felt like a horrific, sudden death that completely cut off their own lifelines. In verse 32, the mourning song they raise over the ruins is explicitly called "a lamentation for Tyre."

                  33-36절은 27장의 내용을 요약하여 설명합니다. 그들이 해상 무역을 통해 얼마나 부유했는지 설명하면서 그들이 파선하였을 때에 사람들의 반응 또한 묘사하지요. 35절에 나오는 반응은 앞에서 말씀드린바 있지만 36절은 조금 다른 부분을 언급합니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “많은 민족의 상인들이 다 너를 비웃음이여 네가 공포의 대상이 되고 네가 영원히 다시 있지 못하리라 하셨느니라” 실로 섬뜩한 부분이지요. 그런데 이것이 세상의 이치인것 같습니다. 우리가 세상의 부와 권력을 의지할 때에 우리가 힘을 가지고 있을 때에는 우리가 함께 비즈하던 사람들이 다 우리를 위하는 것처럼 행동합니다. 그러나 우리가 그 힘을 잃어버릴 때에 그들은 마치 언제 그랬냐는 듯이 우리 등에 칼을 꽂고 우리를 비웃는 존재가 되지요. 사실 우리가 그런 세상의 이치를 알기에 더욱 그 자리를 잃지 않으려고 발버둥치는 것이 아니겠습니까? 공포의 대상이 되고 잊혀진, 다시 있지 못하는 존재가 되어버릴까 두려운 것이 아니겠습니까?

3. The Fickle Reality of the World

Verses 33 through 36 summarize the entirety of chapter 27. It reiterates how incredibly wealthy they once became through maritime trade, while simultaneously describing the reaction of the world when their ship finally wrecked. While verse 35 echoes the terror of the onlookers, verse 36 exposes a brutally raw aspect of human nature. Let us read it together:

“The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.”

This is a truly chilling statement. Yet, this is precisely how the secular world operates. When we rely on worldly wealth and power—when we are at the top of our game—the people we do business with act as if they are our greatest supporters. They smile and cater to us.

But the moment we lose that power, they turn around as if they never knew us, stab us in the back, and mock our downfall. In fact, it is because we instinctively know how brutal the world is that we struggle so desperately to hold onto our positions, isn't it? We are driven by the deep, unspoken fear of becoming an object of horror, a forgotten entity, a person who “shall be no more forever.”

                  말씀을 맺습니다. 두로를 위한 슬픈 노래는 인간의 부귀 영화와 권력을 신뢰하고 교만하였던 두로에게 말씀하시는 하나님의 심판의 노래였습니다. 우리가 두로와 같이 세상의 길을 따라 간다면 우리 또한 늘 자신의 자리를 잃어버리지 않으려 발버둥치는 인생이 되고 맙니다. 우리가 가장 안전하다고 느끼는 그 자리가 바로 우리가 하나님의 동풍으로 파선하게 되는 자리가 될지 모릅니다. 이시간 다시 한 번 우리의 마음을 돌아보아 오직 하나님만 의지하시는 여러분 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Conclusion: Re-evaluating Our Security

Let us conclude. This lamentation for Tyre was God’s song of judgment directed at an empire that grew proud, relying entirely on human wealth, power, and commercial success.

If we choose to follow the exact same path as Tyre, chasing the standards of this world, our lives will also become a relentless, anxious struggle just to keep from losing our earthly positions. We must remember that the very place we feel safest, the earthly security we trust in the most, might be the exact spot where we find ourselves shipwrecked by God’s east wind.

Let us take this moment to look deep within our hearts. Let us ensure that we are not building our lives on the shifting sands of worldly success, but rather standing firm by relying solely and completely on the Lord.
