116:1 여호와께서 내 음성과 내 간구를 들으시므로 내가 그를 사랑하는도다

116:2 그의 귀를 내게 기울이셨으므로 내가 평생에 기도하리로다

1 I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;

    he heard my cry for mercy.

2 Because he turned his ear to me,

    I will call on him as long as I live.

116:3 사망의 줄이 나를 두르고 스올의 고통이 내게 이르므로 내가 환난과 슬픔을 만났을 때에

116:4 내가 여호와의 이름으로 기도하기를 여호와여 주께 구하오니 내 영혼을 건지소서 하였도다

3 The cords of death entangled me,

    the anguish of the grave came over me;

    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.

4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:

    “Lord, save me!”

116:5 여호와는 은혜로우시며 의로우시며 우리 하나님은 긍휼이 많으시도다

116:6 여호와께서는 순진한 자를 지키시나니 내가 어려울 때에 나를 구원하셨도다

5 The Lord is gracious and righteous;

    our God is full of compassion.

6 The Lord protects the unwary;

    when I was brought low, he saved me.

116:7 내 영혼아 네 평안함으로 돌아갈지어다 여호와께서 너를 후대하심이로다

7 Return to your rest, my soul,

    for the Lord has been good to you.

8 For you, Lord, have delivered me from death,

15 Precious in the sight of the Lord

    is the death of his faithful servants.

16 Truly I am your servant, Lord;

    I serve you just as my mother did;

    you have freed me from my chains.

17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you

    and call on the name of the Lord.

18 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord

    in the presence of all his people,

    in your midst, Jerusalem.

본 시편은 과거에 경험한 하나님의 구원에 대해서 감사하는 개인적인 감사시입니다. 어떤 학자는 본 시편이  아람어의 색채가 가득하다는 이유로 포로 후기 작품으로 봅니다. 칼빈은 본 시편을 압살롬의 반역으로 어려움 겪었던 다윗의 시로 봅니다. 반면에 어떤 학자는 죽을 병에서 구원을 얻은 히스기야 왕으로 보기도 합니다.

하지만 본 시편의 저자가 누구라고 확증할 만한 증거가 없습니다. 분명한 것은 저자는 위기 가운데 하나님께 간구했고, 하나님의 은혜로 구원 받은 것을 감사하며 노래한다는 것입니다. 우리는 본 시편을 통해서 기도에 대해서 배울 수 있습니다.

This psalm is a personal song of thanksgiving, expressing gratitude for God’s deliverance experienced in the past. Some scholars view this psalm as a post-exilic work due to its heavy Aramaic coloring. John Calvin, however, regards it as a psalm of David written during the hardships he faced during Absalom’s rebellion. On the other hand, some scholars attribute it to King Hezekiah, who was delivered from a fatal illness.

Nevertheless, there is no conclusive evidence to firmly establish who the author of this psalm is. What remains clear is that the author cried out to God in the midst of a crisis and now sings in gratitude for being saved by God’s grace. Through this psalm, we can learn valuable lessons about prayer.

어떻게 기도해야 할까요? (1~11절)

우리가 기도할 수 있는 가장 근본적인 근거는 듣는 분이 계시기 때문입니다(1, 2절). 

우리 기독교의 기도와 다른 종교의 기도와의 가장 큰 차이는 기도를 듣는 분의 계시다는 사실입니다. 다른 종교에도 기도가 있지만, 다른 종교는 죽은 신, 가짜 신에게 기도합니다. 그들은 들을 수 없습니다. 하지만 우리 하나님은 살아계셔서 우리의 기도를 들으시고 응답하시는 분입니다. 그래서 기도하는 것입니다.

내가 평생에 기도하리로다(2)에서 기도는 히브리어로 카라 인데, 소리쳐 부르짖다라는 의미입니다. 시편 기자가 살아계신 하나님이 계시기에 믿음으로 기도하는데, 부르짖어 기도하는 것입니다. 진심으로 살아계신 하나님을 믿는다면 우리는 부르짖어 기도할 수 있습니다.

우리는 인생의 어려움 중에 애통하며 기도해야 합니다(3, 4절).

사망의 줄, 스올의 고통, 환난, 슬픔을 만났을 때 우리는 기도해야 합니다. 여호와께 내 영혼을 건져 달라고 구해야 합니다. 여기서 구하다에 해당하는 히브리어 아나의 의미는 애곡하다, 슬퍼하다라는 의미입니다. 기도는 다른 것이 아니라, 나를 구원할 수 있는 능력이 있는 하나님 앞에 우는 것입니다. 그러면 하나님이 우리의 눈물을 보시고 구원하십니다. 히스기야처럼 말입니다. 그래서 애통하는 자가 위로를 받는다고 예수님이 말씀 하신 것입니다.

How Should We Pray? (Verses 1–11)

1. We must pray because there is Someone who hears us.

The most fundamental basis upon which we can pray is that there is Someone listening to us (vv. 1, 2). The greatest difference between Christian prayer and the prayers of other religions lies in the fact that the One who receives our prayers actually exists. While other religions have prayers, they pray to dead or false gods who cannot hear. However, our God is alive; He hears our prayers and answers them. That is why we pray.

In the phrase "I will call on him as long as I live" (v. 2), the word for "pray/call" in Hebrew is qara (קָרָא), which means to cry out or call aloud. Because a living God exists, the psalmist prays in faith—specifically by crying out. If we truly believe in the living God, we can cry out in prayer.

2. We must pray with mourning and lamentation during life's hardships.

When we encounter the cords of death, the anguish of Sheol, distress, and sorrow, we must pray (vv. 3, 4). We must ask the Lord to save our souls. Here, the Hebrew word corresponding to "implore/entreat" is anah, which carries the meaning of mourning or lamenting. Prayer is nothing other than weeping before God, who has the power to save us. When we do, God sees our tears and delivers us—just as He did for Hezekiah. This is precisely why Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

우리는 우리의 기도를 들으시는 분이 어떤 분이지 알고 기도해야 합니다(5, 6절).

우리 기도를 들으시는 분이 어떤 분이십니까? 그분은 은혜로우시며, 의로우시며, 긍휼이 많으신 분입니다. 또한 여호와께서는 순진한 자를 지키시고, 우리가 어려울 때 우리를 구원하시는 분입니다. 여기서 순진한 자는 히브리어로 페티인데, 마음이 열려 있는 자, 단순한 자, 무슨 말이든 믿는 자라는 의미입니다. 그래서 예전 개역성경은 어리석은 자라고 번역을 했습니다. 하나님은 연약한 자를 불쌍히 여기시고 구원하시는 분입니다.

우리는 믿음으로 결단하며 기도해야 합니다(7~11절).

시인은 사람들은 믿음의 대상이 아님을 실감합니다(11). 하지만 하나님은 내 영혼을 평안으로 인도하시고, 후대하십니다. 사망에서 건지시고, 내 눈을 눈물에서 건지십니다(7, 8). 시인은 결단합니다. 내가 생명이 있는 동안 여호와 앞에서 행하겠다고… 하나님 앞에 서있다는 신전의식을 가지고 살겠다는 의지입니다(9).

그러므로 시인은 크게 고통을 당할 때도 하나님을 믿을 수 있었습니다(10). 믿음은 결단입니다.

3. We must pray while knowing exactly who it is that hears our prayers.

Who is the One listening to our prayers? He is gracious, righteous, and full of compassion (vv. 5, 6). Furthermore, the Lord protects the unwary (the simple) and saves us when we are in need. Here, the word for "unwary/simple" in Hebrew is peti (פֶּתִי), which means someone whose heart is open, someone who is simple-minded, or someone who easily believes whatever is said. Because of this, older Korean Bible translations rendered it as "the foolish." God pities and saves those who are weak and vulnerable.

4. We must pray with a firm decision of faith.

The psalmist deeply realizes that human beings are not the proper objects of our trust (v. 11). God, however, leads our souls into peace and treats us with bounty. He delivers our souls from death and our eyes from tears (vv. 7, 8). Thus, the psalmist makes a firm resolution: I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living... (v. 9). This reflects his determination to live with a "Coram Deo" consciousness—the awareness of standing directly in the presence of God. Because of this, the psalmist could trust God even when afflicted with great suffering (v. 10). Faith is a decision.

차고 넘치는 하나님의 은혜 (12~19절)

이제 시인은 차고 넘치는 하나님의 은혜에 어떻게 보답할지 고민합니다. 이러한 고민을 한다는 것은 시인이 하나님을 사랑하고 있다는 사실을 알려줍니다. 시인은 이미 하나님께 사랑을 고백했습니다(1).

구원의 은혜에 보답하는 것은  사랑고백입니다. 하나님께 드리는 사랑 고백은 하나님이 가장 좋아하는 말입니다. 다음으로 시인은 자신이 얻은 구원으로 인하여 하나님의 이름을 찬양합니다. 하나님의 구원의 은혜에 보답하는 세번째 방법은 서원을 갚는 것입니다.

하나님은 인격체이십니다. 그래서 하나님과의 관계는 인간 관계와 동일합니다. 진심으로 사랑한다면 사랑한다고 고백해야 합니다. 은혜를 갚고 싶으면 감사하다고 말해야 합니다. 그리고 약속한 것이 있으면 어떤 일이 있어도 그 약속을 지켜야 합니다. 그래야 인간관계가 지속되듯이, 하나님과의 관계도 그렇습니다.

시인은 갑자기 그의 경건한 자들의 죽음, 곧 성도들의 죽음에 대해서 얘기합니다. 하나님은 성도의 죽음을 귀하게 여기신답니다(15). 무슨 의미일까요? 이 땅에서 성도로서 거룩하신 하나님의 뜻을 따라 살았지만, 얼마든지 어려움과 고통 중에 살다가 죽을 수도 있습니다.

하지만 그렇다고 해서 그의 삶과 죽음이 무의미하다는 것이 아니라는 말입니다. 누가 알아주지 않아도, 그렇게 거룩하게 산 자들의 죽음은 곧 천국으로 향하는 문이기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님은 당신의 자녀들인 성도의 죽음을 귀하게 보십니다.  

시인의 이러한 깊은 믿음은 모친으로부터 기인한 듯 합니다(16). 다시 한번 믿음의 유산을 남기는 것이 얼마나 중요한 일인지를 느끼게 합니다. 시인은 백성들 앞에서 감사와 찬양의 제사를 드리고, 서원을 갚습니다(17, 18). 예루살렘 성전에서 하나님을 찬양합니다(19).  

The Overflowing Grace of God (Verses 12–19)

Now, the psalmist wrestles with how to repay the Lord for all His overflowing goodness. The very fact that he ponders this reveals just how much he loves God. The psalmist has already confessed his love in verse 1.

Repaying the grace of salvation begins with a confession of love. A confession of love offered to God is His absolute favorite thing to hear. Next, the psalmist praises the name of the Lord because of the salvation he has received. The third way he repays God's saving grace is by fulfilling his vows.

God is a personal being. Therefore, a relationship with God operates much like human relationships. If you truly love someone, you must confess it. If you want to repay a kindness, you must say thank you. And if you have made a promise, you must keep it no matter what. Just as human relationships require this to endure, so does our relationship with God.

The psalmist then suddenly speaks about the death of His godly ones—the death of the saints. He notes that the death of His saints is precious in the sight of the Lord (v. 15). What does this mean? It means that even though someone may live as a saint on this earth according to God's holy will, they can still experience hardships, suffer, and eventually die.

However, this does not mean their life and death are meaningless. Even if no one else notices, the death of those who lived holily is the very gateway to heaven. That is why God views the death of His children—the saints—as deeply precious.

This deep faith of the psalmist seems to have been inherited from his mother (v. 16). This reminds us once again how incredibly important it is to leave behind a legacy of faith. The psalmist offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise in the presence of all the people, fulfilling his vows (vv. 17, 18). He praises God right there in the courts of the house of the Lord, in the midst of Jerusalem (v. 19).

신은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다는 격언이 있습니다. 어떤 의미인지는 잘 압니다. 하지만 내정하게 분석하자면, 성경적이지 않습니다. 실제로 하나님은 도울 힘 없는 연약한 자를 도우시는 분입니다. 자비로운신 하나님은 자신을 낮추고 은혜를 구하는 자를 도우시는 분입니다.

너무 약해서 하나님이 도울 수 없는 사람은 한 사람도 없습니다.

오히려 너무 강해서 하나님이 도우실 없는 사람만 있을 뿐입니다.

차고 넘치는 하나님의 은혜를 믿음으로 우리는 기도의 자리로 갈 수 있습니다.

오늘도 그 하나님의 은혜를 만끽하는 하루가 되기를 기도합니다. 그 차고 넘치는 은혜를…
