3:12 네 모든 산성은 무화과나무의 처음 익은 열매가 흔들기만 하면 먹는 자의 입에 떨어짐과 같으리라

3:13 네 가운데 장정들은 여인 같고 네 땅의 성문들은 네 원수 앞에 넓게 열리고 빗장들은 불에 타도다

12 All your fortresses are like fig trees

    with their first ripe fruit;

when they are shaken,

    the figs fall into the mouth of the eater.

13 Look at your troops—

    they are all weaklings.

The gates of your land

    are wide open to your enemies;

    fire has consumed the bars of your gates.

3:14 너는 물을 길어 에워싸일 것을 대비하며 너의 산성들을 견고하게 하며 진흙에 들어가서 흙을 밟아 벽돌 가마를 수리하라

3:15 거기서 불이 너를 삼키며 칼이 너를 베기를 느치가 먹는 것 같이 하리라 네가 느치 같이 스스로 많게 할지어다 네가 메뚜기 같이 스스로 많게 할지어다

3:16 네가 네 상인을 하늘의 별보다 많게 하였으나 느치가 날개를 펴서 날아감과 같고

3:17 네 방백은 메뚜기 같고 너의 장수들은 큰 메뚜기 떼가 추운 날에는 울타리에 깃들였다가 해가 뜨면 날아감과 같으니 그 있는 곳을 알 수 없도다

14 Draw water for the siege,

    strengthen your defenses!

Work the clay,

    tread the mortar,

    repair the brickwork!

15 There the fire will consume you;

    the sword will cut you down—

    they will devour you like a swarm of locusts.

Multiply like grasshoppers,

    multiply like locusts!

16 You have increased the number of your merchants

    till they are more numerous than the stars in the sky,

but like locusts they strip the land

    and then fly away.

17 Your guards are like locusts,

    your officials like swarms of locusts

    that settle in the walls on a cold day—

but when the sun appears they fly away,

    and no one knows where.

3:18 앗수르 왕이여 네 목자가 자고 네 귀족은 누워 쉬며 네 백성은 산들에 흩어지나 그들을 모을 사람이 없도다

3:19 네 상처는 고칠 수 없고 네 부상은 중하도다 네 소식을 듣는 자가 다 너를 보고 손뼉을 치나니 이는 그들이 항상 네게 행패를 당하였음이 아니더냐 하시니라

18 King of Assyria, your shepherds[b] slumber;

    your nobles lie down to rest.

Your people are scattered on the mountains

    with no one to gather them.

19 Nothing can heal you;

    your wound is fatal.

All who hear the news about you

    clap their hands at your fall,

for who has not felt

    your endless cruelty?

2026년 북중미 월드컵이 한창입니다. 이 즐거운 세계 축제에서 우리 대한민국은 전혀 즐겁지 않습니다. 많은 사람들이 이러한 한국 축구의 몰락은 이미 예견 되었다고 합니다. 학연, 지연, 이해 관계에 의한 축구협회의 인사는 많은 축구 관계자들로부터 지적과 염려의 대상이었습니다.

대표팀 감독인 홍씨의 성의 없는 인터뷰와 주머니에 손을 넣고 퇴장하는 모습은 태도에 대한 논란까지 불러왔습니다. 참으로 안타까운 것은 선수는 물론 함께 고생했던 선후배들 중에서 단 한사람도 현 대표팀 감독을 두둔하거나 편드는 사람이 없다는 것입니다. 그만큼 국민들을 실망시킨 점도 있겠지만, 평소에 사람들과 어떻게 관계를 맺었었는지 짐작할 수 있습니다.

The 2026 North American World Cup is in full swing. Yet, during this joyful global festival, we in South Korea are not enjoying ourselves at all. Many people say that this collapse of Korean football was already bound to happen. The Football Association's appointments—driven by school ties, regional factions, and conflicts of interest—have long been a target of criticism and concern among football officials. The national team manager, Mr. Hong, has even sparked controversy regarding his attitude, noted for his insincere interviews and his habit of exiting with his hands in his pockets. What is truly tragic is that not a single person among the players, or the seniors and juniors who suffered alongside him, has stepped up to defend or side with the current manager. While this may partly be due to how much he has disappointed the public, it also gives us a glimpse into how he must have managed his relationships in his daily life.

허무한 제국 (12~19a절)

나훔 선지자는 앗수르의 몰락을 예언합니다. 그리고 앗수르가 몰락할 때는 모든 사람들이 박수를 칠 것을 예언합니다. 초강대국 앗수르와 수도 니느웨의 몰락은 큰 깨우침을 줍니다. 나훔은 앗수르 제국의 네 가지 몰락을 노래합니다. 

나훔은 먼저 니느웨 산성의 몰락을 노래합니다(12).

니느웨의 성벽은 성문과 성문 사이가 30m이고, 성벽 위 폭이 15m였다고 합니다. 어마어마한 성벽입니다. 하지만 하나님의 심판이 임하면 마치 흔들기만 하면 떨어지는 폭삭 익은 무화과 열매와 같이, 그 성벽은 너무도 허무하게 무너져 내릴 것입니다(12).

그러므로 물을 길어서 성이 포위 당할 것을 대비하고, 산성을 더 견고하게 보수하라고 합니다(13). 하지만 그것도 소용 없을 것입니다. 마치 느치가 작물을 초토화 시키듯이 불과 칼이 그들을 삼킬 것입니다(15). 그들이 자랑하던 산성이 순식간에 무너질 것입니다. 내가 자랑하는 것은 무엇입니까? 내가 세운 산성이 무엇입니까? 그것이 무엇이든 하나님의 심판의 불 앞에는 모든 공적을 잃고 불에 타 사라질 것입니다.  

그래서 사도 바울은 그러나 내게는 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가 외에 결코 자랑할 것이 없다(갈 6:14)고 고백한 것입니다. 저와 여러분의 자랑은 무엇입니까?

두번째는 장정들의 몰락을 노래합니다(13).

장정은 그 나라의 힘을 상징합니다. 그런데 장정들이 마치 여인 같다고 표현합니다. 여성은 부드러움과 자비로움, 그리고 상대적으로 남성에 비해 연약함을 상징합니다. 장정들이 여인들과 같다는 것은 그들이 겁을 먹고 적들에게서 도주한다는 의미입니다. 니느웨의 힘, 군사력의 몰락을 상징합니다.

The Futile Empire (Verses 12–19a)

The prophet Nahum prophesies the downfall of Assyria. He also prophesies that when Assyria falls, everyone will clap their hands in joy. The collapse of the superpower Assyria and its capital, Nineveh, offers a profound lesson. Nahum sings of the fourfold downfall of the Assyrian Empire.

First, Nahum sings of the collapse of Nineveh's fortresses (v. 12). It is said that Nineveh's walls spanned 30 meters between gates, and the width at the top of the walls was 15 meters. It was a massive, staggering wall. However, when God's judgment arrives, those walls will crumble so effortlessly—just like fully ripe figs falling from a tree when it is shaken (v. 12). Therefore, they are told to draw water to prepare for the siege and to fortify their strongholds (v. 14). Yet, even that will be in vain. Fire and sword will devour them, just as the locust strips the crops bare (v. 15). The fortress they boasted of will collapse in an instant.

What is it that I boast of? What is the fortress I have built? Whatever it may be, before the fire of God's judgment, all human achievements will lose their value and burn away into nothingness. This is why the Apostle Paul confessed: "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Galatians 6:14). What is your boast, and what is mine?

Second, he sings of the downfall of the young men (v. 13). Young men symbolize a nation's strength. Yet, they are described as being like women. Women symbolize gentleness, mercy, and relative vulnerability compared to men. To say that the young warriors are like women means they will be terrified and flee from their enemies. It symbolizes the collapse of Nineveh's power and military might.

세번째는 상인들의 몰락을 노래합니다(16).

하늘의 별보다 많았던 상인은 경제적으로 부유했던 니느웨를 상징합니다. 하지만 하나님의 심판이 임하면 느치가 날아감과 같이 그 모든 부와 풍요함이 순식간에 사라질 것입니다. 전쟁은 경제를 파탄으로 몰아갑니다. 우리는 직접적으로 이러한 사실을 경험합니다. 전쟁으로 인해서 유가가 폭등하면, 전세계 사람들이 경제적인 영향을 받습니다. 하나님이 심판을 하시면, 경제적인 몰락이 옵니다.  

네번째는 방백들이 몰락합니다(17).

방백은 고위관리들을 의미합니다. 리더십입니다. 하나님의 심판은 지위를 가리지 않습니다. 아니, 하나님의 심판은 공동체 지도자들에게 더 강력하게 임합니다. 그들은 메뚜기 떼와 같이 뿔뿔이 흩어질 것입니다. 하나님의 심판을 받은 민족들의 지도자들이 뿔뿔이 흩어진 모습을 역사 속에서 자주 목격합니다.

그러므로 지도자들은 하나님이 주신 권위와 권력에 대한 책임의식이 있어야 합니다. 반드시 하나님은 당신이 맡기신 권력에 대한 책임을 물으실 것입니다.

결론적으로 왕, 지도자, 백성 모든 앗수르 사람, 니느웨 시민들이 몰락할 것입니다(18). 하나님이 흩으시면 모을자가 없고, 하나님이 모으시면 흩을 자가 없습니다. 인간들이 세운 제국의 허무함입니다. 나만의 산성, 나의 힘, 나의 물질, 나의 권력을 자랑하지만 하나님의 심판 앞에서는 불 앞에 있는 볏단과 같을 뿐입니다. 우리는 이 땅에 머무는 동안 이렇게 허무한 것으로 나만의 성을 쌓아서는 안 됩니다. 그래서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀 하신 것입니다. 

너희를 위하여 보물을 땅에 쌓아 두지 말라 거기는 좀과 동록이 해하며 도둑이 구멍을 뚫고 도둑질하느니라 오직 너희를 위하여 보물을 하늘에 쌓아 두라 거기는 좀이나 동록이 해하지 못하며 도둑이 구멍을 뚫지도 못하고 도둑질도 못하느니라 네 보물 있는 그 곳에는 네 마음도 있느니라

(마 6:19~21)

Third, he sings of the downfall of the merchants (v. 16). The merchants, who were more numerous than the stars in the sky, symbolize Nineveh’s economic wealth. However, when God's judgment falls, all that wealth and affluence will vanish in an instant, like locusts flying away. War drives an economy into ruin. We experience this fact directly. When oil prices skyrocket due to war, people all over the world feel the economic impact. When God judges, economic collapse follows.

Fourth, the princes collapse (v. 17). Princes refer to high-ranking officials. It represents leadership. God's judgment does not discriminate based on status. In fact, God's judgment falls even more heavily upon community leaders. They will scatter in all directions like swarms of grasshoppers. History frequently witnesses the leaders of nations judged by God scattering away. Therefore, leaders must possess a sense of responsibility for the authority and power God has granted them. God will surely hold them accountable for the power He entrusted to them.

In conclusion, the king, the leaders, the people—all Assyrians and citizens of Nineveh—will fall (v. 18). When God scatters, no one can gather; when God gathers, no one can scatter. Such is the futility of empires built by human hands. We boast of our own fortresses, our strength, our material wealth, and our power, but before God’s judgment, they are nothing more than bundles of straw before a blazing fire. While we reside on this earth, we must not build our own castles out of such futile things. This is precisely why Jesus said:

결국에는 권선징악 (19b절)

하나님의 심판은 매우 두렵고, 잔인합니다. 한번 정하신 것은 변하지 않습니다. 네 상처는 고칠 수 없고 네 부상은 중하도다(19)는 의미가 그것입니다. 이렇게 처절하게 하나님께 심판 당하는 모습을 보면, 그래도 한 두명은 안쓰러워해야 하는데, 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 아니, 오히려 모두가 보고 손뼉을 치며 즐거워합니다. 그 이유는 앗수르가 평소에 주변 국가들을 그보다 더 괴롭혔기 때문입니다.

항상 인생은 뿌린대로 거두는 법입니다. 선한 것으로 심으면 선한 것이 나고, 악한 것으로 심으면 악한 것이 납니다. 하나님은 행한대로 갚으시는 분입니다. 그래서 다윗은 다음과 같이 노래한 것입니다.

주여 인자함은 주께 속하오니 주께서 각 사람이 행한 대로 갚으심이니이다 (시 62:12)

여기서도 주님의 인자하심과 갚으신다는 주님의 심판이 동전의 양면처럼 노래됩니다. 주님은 인자하신 사랑의 하나님이시기에 각 사람의 행한대로 갚으시는 것입니다. 악인들에게는 악으로, 선을 행한 자에게는 선으로… 권선징악, 인생의 결론은 권선징악입니다.

허무한 인생, 무엇을 추구하고 무엇을 쌓으시겠습니까? 이 땅의 것들은 하나님의 심판의 불 앞에 모두 허무하게 사라질 것입니다. 그때 불에 타서 사라지지 않는 것으로 준비해야 합니다. 바로 우리의 보석, 우리의 황금이신 예수입니다. 오늘도 예수님을 사랑하는 마음으로 믿음의 벽돌을 하나 하나 쌓는 우리 모두가 되기를 바랍니다.

Ultimately, the Reward of Virtue and Punishment of Vice (Verse 19b)

God's judgment is terrifying and severe. Once He decrees it, it does not change. This is the meaning behind: "Your injury has no cure; your wound is severe" (v. 19). When witnessing someone undergo such a miserable judgment from God, you would expect at least one or two people to feel sorry for them, but that is not the case at all. On the contrary, everyone who hears the news claps their hands and rejoices. This is because Assyria routinely tormented its neighboring nations far worse.

Life always operates on the principle that you reap what you sow. If you sow good things, good things grow; if you sow evil things, evil things grow. God is a God who repays according to one's deeds. This is why David sang:

Here, the Lord's loving-kindness and His judging recompense are sung as two sides of the same coin. Because the Lord is a merciful God of love, He repays each person according to their deeds. Evil to the wicked, good to those who do good... the reward of virtue and punishment of vice. The ultimate conclusion of life is just that.

In this futile life, what will you pursue and what will you build? The things of this earth will all vanish into nothingness before the fire of God's judgment. At that time, we must be prepared with what cannot be burned away and lost. That is Jesus, who is our jewel and our gold. I pray that today, with a heart that loves Jesus, we may all lay down the bricks of faith one by one.
