[The Resurrection of Christ]

1 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

15:3 내가 받은 것을 먼저 너희에게 전하였노니 이는 성경대로 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위하여 죽으시고

15:4 장사 지낸 바 되었다가 성경대로 사흘 만에 다시 살아나사

15:5 게바에게 보이시고 후에 열두 제자에게와

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

15:9 나는 사도 중에 가장 작은 자라 나는 하나님의 교회를 박해하였으므로 사도라 칭함 받기를 감당하지 못할 자니라

15:10 그러나 내가 나 된 것은 하나님의 은혜로 된 것이니 내게 주신 그의 은혜가 헛되지 아니하여 내가 모든 사도보다 더 많이 수고하였으나 내가 한 것이 아니요 오직 나와 함께 하신 하나님의 은혜로라

15:11 그러므로 나나 그들이나 이같이 전파하매 너희도 이같이 믿었느니라

9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11 Whether, then, it is I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

어제까지 우리는 고린도교회가 가지고 있던 다양한 은사와 방언에 관한 여러 어려움을 살펴봤습니다. 이제 15장부터는 또 새로운 문제가 소개되는데요. 바로 ‘부활 신앙’에 관한 것입니다. 고린도 교회에 헬라적 사고의 영향으로 “죽은 자의 부활은 없다”라는 사상의 영향을 받은 성도들이 있었기 때문입니다. 당시 헬라 철학은 육체를 영혼의 감옥처럼 여기며 죽음을 영혼의 해방으로 이해했습니다. 그렇기에 영혼이 떠난 몸이 다시 살아난다는 생각은 받아들이기 어려웠습니다. 그러므로 사도 바울은 복음의 메시지를 다시 선포하며 고린도 교회 성도들에게 예수 그리스도에 대한 중요한 신앙고백을 전합니다. 사도 바울이 경험한 하나님의 은혜를 함께 살펴보며 우리도 같은 고백을 하는 새벽되기를 원합니다.

Up until yesterday, we examined the various spiritual gifts and the difficulties surrounding speaking in tongues within the Corinthian church. Now, beginning in chapter 15, a new issue is introduced—namely, the matter of the “resurrection faith.” This arose because some believers in the Corinthian church were influenced by Greek thinking, which claimed, “There is no resurrection of the dead.” At that time, Greek philosophy regarded the body as a prison of the soul and understood death as the soul’s liberation. Therefore, the idea that a body, once the soul had departed, could come back to life was difficult for them to accept. For this reason, the Apostle Paul once again proclaims the message of the gospel and delivers an important confession of faith about Jesus Christ to the believers in Corinth. As we reflect together on the grace of God that Paul experienced, may we also come to make the same confession.

먼저 우리는 다시 한번 복음이 무엇인지 배웁니다. (1-4절)

사도 바울은 확실히 고린도 교회가 자신이 전한 복음을 받고 그 안에 서 있음을 말합니다 (1절). 그리고 복음을 들은 자들마다 그 말을 굳게 믿으면 구원을 얻습니다 (2절). 그렇다면 그 복음은 무슨 내용입니까? 바로 3절과 4절에 나오죠. 그리스도께서 우리 죄를 위해 죽으셨습니다. 그리고 우리가 받아야 할 죄의 형벌을 그리스도께서 대신 감당하셨습니다. 그리고 예수님은 실제로 돌아가시고 장사되신 후 사흘 만에 다시 살아나셨습니다. 그리고 이 모든 일은 ‘성경대로’ 이루어진 하나님의 구원 계획이었습니다. 여기서 중요한 사실이 바로 복음의 핵심은 예수님의 죽으심과 부활하심입니다. 예수님이 부활하지 않으셨다면 예수님의 하나님의 아들이라는 사실은 거짓이고, 예수님이 아무 죄가 없으시다는 사실도 거짓이 됩니다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 우리 모두처럼 죄인으로서 스스로의 죄값을 지불하셨을테니 말입니다. 그렇다면 우리는 예수님을 구주로 고백할 필요도 없으며 우리의 죄를 대신 갚아줄 사람이 없기 때문에 구원의 소망도 없을 것입니다. 그리스도의 부활은 복음의 핵심이며 우리의 구원과 소망의 기초가 됩니다.

First, we learn once again what the gospel is (verses 1–4). 

Paul clearly states that the Corinthian church has received the gospel he preached and is standing firm in it (v. 1). And everyone who hears this gospel and holds firmly to it will be saved (v. 2). So what is the content of this gospel? It is found in verses 3 and 4: Christ died for our sins. He bore the punishment that we deserved for our sins. He truly died, was buried, and rose again on the third day. All of this happened “according to the Scriptures,” as part of God’s plan of salvation. The key truth here is that the heart of the gospel is Jesus’ death and resurrection. If Jesus had not risen, then the claim that He is the Son of God would be false, and it would also mean that He was not sinless. In that case, He would have simply paid for His own sins like any other sinner. Then we would have no need to confess Him as our Savior, and since no one could pay for our sins, we would have no hope of salvation. The resurrection of Christ is the core of the gospel and the foundation of our salvation and hope.

다음으로 부활이 실제 일어난 일이었음을 증명하는 예수님의 나타나심을 봅니다. (5-8절)

예수님의 부활을 제일 먼저 목격한 사람은 게바입니다. 게바는 베드로의 또 다른 이름으로 예수님께서 지어주신 이름입니다 (요1:42). 그리고 열두 제자에게 나타나셨습니다. 그리고 오백여명의 사람들 앞에 나타나셨습니다. 그리고 7절에 나온 야고보는 예수님의 친 형제였던 야고보를 말합니다. 그 후에 모든 사도들에게 나타나셨으며, 마지막으로 사도 바울에게도 나타나셨습니다. 예수님의 부활을 목격한 이들의 삶은 180도 달라졌습니다. 두려움으로 예수님이 돌아가실 때 다 도망갔었던 제자들은 모두 밖으로 나와 예수님을 전파하는 삶을 살고 순교했습니다. 특히 야고보는 예수님의 공생애 초기에는 오히려 예수님을 믿지 않았었죠. 그러나 예수님의 부활을 목격한 후, 그는 예루살렘 교회의 초대 지도자가 되었습니다. 또 사도 바울은 어떻습니까? 그리스도인을 박해하는 사람에서 예수를 위해 사는 사람으로 완전히 바뀌었죠. 그는 자신 스스로를 “맨 나중에 만삭되지 못하여 난 자 같은”(8절) 사람이라고 말합니다. 이것은 그가 다른 사도들이 예수님과 시간을 보내며 제자도를 배운 것과는 달리 갑작스럽게 사도가 되었음을 말합니다. 그의 사도직은 하나님의 은혜입니다.

Next, we see the appearances of Jesus, which prove that the resurrection truly happened (verses 5–8). 

The first person to witness the risen Jesus was Cephas (another name for Peter, given by Jesus—John 1:42). Then He appeared to the twelve disciples, and later to more than five hundred people at one time. In verse 7, James refers to Jesus’ own brother. After that, Jesus appeared to all the apostles, and finally, He appeared to Paul himself. The lives of those who witnessed the resurrection were completely transformed. The disciples, who had fled in fear when Jesus was crucified, came out boldly, proclaiming Him and eventually giving their lives as martyrs. James, who at first did not believe in Jesus during His earthly ministry, became the leader of the Jerusalem church after witnessing the resurrection. And what about Paul? He was transformed from a persecutor of Christians into someone who lived entirely for Jesus. He describes himself as “one abnormally born” (v. 8), meaning that unlike the other apostles who had spent time learning directly from Jesus, he became an apostle suddenly. His apostleship was purely by God’s grace.

이처럼 우리는 예수님이 죽었다가 부활하심을 믿는 은혜를 입었습니다. 예수님이 부활하지 않으셨다면 누릴 수 없는 것들을 누리며 살고 있습니다. 우리도 사도 바울처럼 이것이 하나님의 크신 은혜임을 깨닫는 지혜로운 사람들 되기를 원합니다. 그는 자신이 저지른 죄악을 깊이 깨닫고 평생을 회개하며 살았습니다. 또 그는 자신의 죄를 숨기지 않고 분명하게 밝히며 그 크신 하나님의 은혜를 더욱 올려드렸습니다. 우리 또한 우리가 어떤 존재인지 복음을 통해 뼈저리게 깨달아야 합니다. 우리가 얼마나 이 은혜를 받을 자격이 없는지 말입니다. 그의 10절 고백이 우리의 고백이 되기를 원합니다. “그러나 내가 나 된 것은 하나님의 은혜로 된 것입니다”(10절). 우리가 지금 누리는 것, 가지고 있는 것, 그 무엇 하나 하나님의 은혜로 되지 않은 것이 없음을 함께 고백합시다. 오직 나와 함께하신 하나님의 은혜를 찬양합니다.

In this way, we have received the grace to believe that Jesus died and rose again. We are living while enjoying things that would be impossible if Jesus had not been resurrected. Like the Apostle Paul, may we become wise people who recognize that this is the great grace of God. He deeply realized the sins he had committed and lived a life of continual repentance. He did not hide his sins; instead, he openly acknowledged them, thereby magnifying the greatness of God’s grace even more. Likewise, we too must come to a deep realization, through the gospel, of who we truly are—how utterly unworthy we are to receive this grace. May his confession in verse 10 become our confession: “But by the grace of God I am what I am” (v. 10).

Let us confess together that everything we now enjoy and possess has come solely by the grace of God. We praise the grace of God who is with us.
