10:1 형제들아 나는 너희가 알지 못하기를 원하지 아니하노니 우리 조상들이 다 구름 아래에 있고 바다 가운데로 지나며

10:2 모세에게 속하여 다 구름과 바다에서 세례를 받고

10:3 모두가 같은 신령한 음식을 먹으며

10:4 모두가 같은 신령한 음료를 뒤따르는 신령한 반석으로부터 마셨으니 그 반석은 곧 그리스도시라

10:5 그러나 그들의 다수를 하나님이 기뻐하지 아니하셨으므로 그들이 광야에서 멸망을 받았느니라

[Warnings From Israel’s History]

1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

10:6 이러한 일은 우리들의 본보기가 되어 우리로 하여금 그들이 악을 즐겨한 것 같이 즐겨하는 자가 되지 않게 하려 함이니

10:7 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들과 같이 너희는 우상 숭배하는 자가 되지 말라 기록된 바 백성이 앉아서 먹고 마시며 일어나서 뛰논다 함과 같으니라

10:8 그들 중의 어떤 사람들이 음행하다가 하루에 이만 삼천 명이 죽었나니 우리는 그들과 같이 음행하지 말자

10:9 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들이 주를 시험하다가 뱀에게 멸망하였나니 우리는 그들과 같이 시험하지 말자

10:10 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들이 원망하다가 멸망시키는 자에게 멸망하였나니 너희는 그들과 같이 원망하지 말라

6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.” 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.

10:11 그들에게 일어난 이런 일은 본보기가 되고 또한 말세를 만난 우리를 깨우치기 위하여 기록되었느니라

10:12 그런즉 선 줄로 생각하는 자는 넘어질까 조심하라

10:13 사람이 감당할 시험 밖에는 너희가 당한 것이 없나니 오직 하나님은 미쁘사 너희가 감당하지 못할 시험 당함을 허락하지 아니하시고 시험 당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 너희로 능히 감당하게 하시느니라

11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

사도 바울은 이스라엘 조상들의 죄악을 언급하며 당시 고린도 교회 성도들을 향한 경고의 메세지를 보냅니다. 과거 모세 때 이스라엘 백성들이 어떠한 벌을 받았는지를 말씀을 통해 살펴볼 수 있는 것은 우리에게 본보기가 되고 가르침을 줍니다 (11절). 광야 속에서 하나님의 임재와 보호하심을 계속해서 경험했던 이스라엘 백성들은 그럼에도 불구하고 우상 숭배, 음행, 하나님을 향한 원망 등을 멈추지 않았고 그에 따른 심판을 받았습니다. 사도 바울의 말씀을 통해 우리의 신앙도 점검해 봅시다.

The Apostle Paul mentions the sins of Israel’s ancestors as a warning message to the believers in the Corinthian church. Through Scripture, we are able to see what kind of judgment the Israelites received during the time of Moses, and these things serve as examples and lessons for us (v.11). Even though the Israelites continually experienced God’s presence and protection in the wilderness, they still did not stop worshiping idols, committing sexual immorality, and grumbling against God, and they received judgment as a result. Through Paul’s words, let us also examine our own faith.

과거 조상들의 이야기 (1-5절)

사도 바울은 과거 조상들의 출애굽 경험을 회상합니다. 광야 속에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들을 먹이시고 보호하셨습니다. 2절에서 사도 바울은 출애굽 당시 이스라엘 백성이 홍해를 건넌 사건을 통해 ‘세례’를 받았다고 합니다 (2절). 그리고 이들이 광야에서 먹은 신령한 음식인 만나와 반석에서 나온 물도 그리스도와 연결지었습니다. 즉 이스라엘 백성들은 그리스도 안에서 세례받고 주님과 함께 성찬에 참여했던 자들이었습니다. 그러기에 사도 바울은 이스라엘 백성들을 고린도 교회 성도들의 조상이라고 칭합니다. 비록 고린도 성도들이 다 유대인이 아님에도 불구하고 말입니다. 이렇게 애굽을 떠나 홍해를 건너며 세례를 받고, 또 광야에서 그리스도를 예표하는 만나를 먹고 반석에서 나온 생수를 마신 이스라엘 백성들입니다. 그러나 그들의 결말은 어떻습니까? 오직 믿음으로 구원받은 여호수아와 갈렙을 제외한 나머지는 모두 다 약속의 땅에 들어가지 못하고 광야에서 멸망했습니다. 이것은 사실 굉장히 무서운 말씀입니다. 사도 바울은 고린도 교회 성도들에게 ‘우리도 악을 행하다가 멸망할 수 있다’는 엄중한 경고를 보내고 있는 것입니다. 이 말씀은 현대 시대를 살고 있는 우리에게도 적용되는 말씀입니다. 주일 날 예배와 성찬식에 참석한다고 할 지라도 계속하여 악행을 저지른다면, 우리 또한 하나님의 공의로운 징계에서 벗어날 수 없을 것입니다. 그러므로 우리는 우리가 쉽게 방심하여 저지를 수 있는 이스라엘 백성들과 같은 죄를 짓지 않기 위해 사도 바울의 말씀에 귀를 기울어야 하겠습니다.

The Story of Our Ancestors (vv.1–5)

Paul recalls the Exodus experience of Israel’s ancestors. In the wilderness, God fed and protected His people. In verse 2, Paul says that the Israelites received a kind of “baptism” when they crossed the Red Sea during the Exodus (v.2). He also connects the spiritual food they ate in the wilderness—the manna—and the water that came from the rock to Christ. In other words, the Israelites were people who had been baptized into Christ and who shared in fellowship with the Lord. That is why Paul calls them the ancestors of the Corinthian believers, even though not all the Corinthians were Jews. These were the people who left Egypt, crossed the Red Sea through baptism, ate the manna that foreshadowed Christ in the wilderness, and drank the living water from the rock. But what was their end? Except for Joshua and Caleb, who were saved by faith, the rest all perished in the wilderness and did not enter the Promised Land. This is actually a very frightening message. Paul is giving the Corinthian believers a solemn warning: “We too can perish if we continue in evil.” This word also applies to us living in the modern age. Even if we attend worship services and participate in communion every Sunday, if we continue practicing evil, we too cannot escape God’s righteous discipline. Therefore, we must listen carefully to Paul’s warning so that we do not fall into the same sins as the Israelites, sins that we can easily commit through carelessness.

조상들의 본보기 (6-10절)

사도 바울은 이스라엘 백성들이 행했던 과거의 여러가지 악행들을 세분화하여 경고합니다. 첫 번째로 그들이 즐겨했던 악행은 바로 ‘우상 숭배’입니다 (7절). 대표적으로 출애굽기 32장에 모세가 시내산에서 늦게 내려왔을 때 이스라엘 백성이 아론에게 요청해 금송아지를 만들어 숭배했던 사건이 있었죠. 다음으로 그들의 악행으로 ‘음행’을 지적합니다 (8절). 하루에 이만 삼천 명이 죽었던 사건은 바로 민수기 25장에 나오는 이스라엘 백성들이 모압 여인들과 음행하며 바알 신을 섬긴 사건입니다. 음행과 우상 숭배가 더해져 하나님께서 크게 진노하셨습니다. 음행은 사람을 하나님으로부터 멀어지게 만듭니다. 세 번째로 이스라엘 조상들의 악행은 바로 ‘하나님에 대한 시험’입니다 (9절). 이것은 하나님이 주신 것으로 만족하지 못하고, 내 욕망을 채워 주지 않는다며 따지는 태도입니다. 민수기 21장에서 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 보호하심을 다 경험했지만서도 애굽을 그리워하며 만나를 하찮은 음식이라고 치부했습니다. 그러자 하나님께서는 불뱀을 보내시어 많은 백성들이 물려 죽었었죠. 마지막으로 언급된 악행은 바로 ‘원망’입니다 (10절). 원망은 하나님을 신뢰하지 않는 마음입니다. 이들의 원망은 아까 언급했던 민수기 21장의 사건과 깊이 연관되어져 있습니다. 히브리서 저자는 말합니다. “형제들아 너희는 삼가 혹 너희 중에 누가 믿지 아니하는 악한 마음을 품고 살아 계신 하나님에게서 떨어질까 조심할 것이요” (히 3:12). 하나님의 계획을 신뢰하지 않고 끊임없는 불평과 원망을 쏟아내면 하나님에게서 떨어져 나와 그의 안식에 들어가지 못하게 될 것입니다.

The Example of Our Ancestors (vv.6–10)

Paul specifically warns against several evil deeds committed by the Israelites in the past. The first sin they repeatedly committed was idolatry (v.7). A representative example is found in Exodus 32, when Moses delayed coming down from Mount Sinai and the Israelites asked Aaron to make a golden calf for them to worship. Next, Paul points out their sexual immorality (v.8). The incident where twenty-three thousand people died in one day refers to Numbers 25, when the Israelites committed sexual immorality with Moabite women and worshiped the god Baal. Sexual immorality combined with idol worship brought great anger from God. Sexual sin draws people away from God. The third evil deed of Israel’s ancestors was testing God (v.9). This refers to an attitude of dissatisfaction with what God has provided, complaining that He is not fulfilling one’s desires. In Numbers 21, even after experiencing God’s protection, the Israelites longed for Egypt and treated the manna as worthless food. As a result, God sent fiery serpents among them, and many people died from the bites. The final sin mentioned is grumbling (v.10). Grumbling reflects a heart that does not trust God. Their complaints are closely connected to the incident in Numbers 21 mentioned earlier. The writer of Hebrews says: “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). If we do not trust God’s plan and continually pour out complaints and grumbling, we too may fall away from God and fail to enter His rest.

이 마지막 때에 우리는 더욱 영적인 나태함을 경계하고 주님의 재림과 시험에 대비해 항상 깨어 있어야 합니다. 그러니 이 사도 바울의 말씀에 따라 과거 조상들의 행적을 본보기 삼아 깨우침을 얻을 수 있음에 참으로 감사합니다. “그런즉 선 줄로 생각하는 자는 넘어질까 조심하라” (12절). 이 말씀과 같이 우리 모두 성령 충만을 최우선 삼아 시험과 고난의 시기 때를 위해 겸손히 영적으로 깨어나 준비해야 겠습니다. 지금 현재 마음이 힘드신 분 계십니까? 상상조차 하기 힘든 고난에 마음이 흔들리고 계십니까? ‘나는 이겨낼 수 없다’ 생각이 드신다면 13절을 통해 큰 위로 받기를 원합니다. “오직 하나님은 미쁘사 너희가 감당하지 못할 시험 당함을 허락하지 아니하시고 시험당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 너희로 능히 감당하게 하시느니라” 아멘! 하나님께서는 우리의 능력을 아시고 이미 능히 감당할 모든 힘과 방편을 세워놓으신 선하고 미쁘신 하나님이심을 믿습니다.

In these last days, we must be even more careful against spiritual laziness and remain spiritually awake as we prepare for the Lord’s return and for times of testing. Therefore, we are truly thankful that through Paul’s words we can learn from the example of our ancestors. “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (v.12). According to this word, all of us must make being filled with the Holy Spirit our highest priority and humbly remain spiritually alert and prepared for seasons of temptation and suffering. Are any of you struggling in your heart right now? Is your heart shaken by hardships too difficult to even imagine? If you feel, “I cannot overcome this,” may you receive great comfort from verse 13: “God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” Amen! We believe that God is good and faithful. He knows our limits and has already prepared every strength and means necessary for us to endure.
