106:1 할렐루야 여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다

1 Praise the Lord.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

    his love endures forever.

106:2 누가 능히 여호와의 권능을 다 말하며 주께서 받으실 찬양을 다 선포하랴

106:3 정의를 지키는 자들과 항상 공의를 행하는 자는 복이 있도다

2 Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord

    or fully declare his praise?

3 Blessed are those who act justly,

    who always do what is right.

106:4 여호와여 주의 백성에게 베푸시는 은혜로 나를 기억하시며 주의 구원으로 나를 돌보사

106:5 내가 주의 택하신 자가 형통함을 보고 주의 나라의 기쁨을 나누어 가지게 하사 주의 유산을 자랑하게 하소서

4 Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people,

    come to my aid when you save them,

5 that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones,

    that I may share in the joy of your nation

    and join your inheritance in giving praise.

106:6 우리가 우리의 조상들처럼 범죄하여 사악을 행하며 악을 지었나이다

106:7 우리의 조상들이 애굽에 있을 때 주의 기이한 일들을 깨닫지 못하며 주의 크신 인자를 기억하지 아니하고 바다 곧 홍해에서 거역하였나이다

106:8 그러나 여호와께서는 자기의 이름을 위하여 그들을 구원하셨으니 그의 큰 권능을 만인이 알게 하려 하심이로다

106:9 이에 홍해를 꾸짖으시니 곧 마르니 그들을 인도하여 바다 건너가기를 마치 광야를 지나감 같게 하사

106:10 그들을 그 미워하는 자의 손에서 구원하시며 그 원수의 손에서 구원하셨고

106:11 그들의 대적들은 물로 덮으시매 그들 중에서 하나도 살아 남지 못하였도다

106:12 이에 그들이 그의 말씀을 믿고 그를 찬양하는 노래를 불렀도다

6 We have sinned, even as our ancestors did;

    we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

7 When our ancestors were in Egypt,

    they gave no thought to your miracles;

they did not remember your many kindnesses,

    and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea.

8 Yet he saved them for his name’s sake,

    to make his mighty power known.

9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up;

    he led them through the depths as through a desert.

10 He saved them from the hand of the foe;

    from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.

11 The waters covered their adversaries;

    not one of them survived.

12 Then they believed his promises

    and sang his praise.

         오늘부터 시작해서 화,수,목 3일 동안 시편 106편을 함께 보게됩니다. 어제까지의 말씀이었던 시편 105편은 모세오경에서 드러났던 하나님의 신실하심을 다루는 역사시 였지요. 오늘부터 보게 될 시편 106편도 같은 역사시인데요. 106편은 105편과는 다르게 역사 가운데 끊임없이 반복되는 이스라엘의 죄악에 촛점을 맞추고 있습니다. 그런데 감사한 것은 그들의 죄악 뿐만 아니라 그럼에도 불구하고 끊어지지 않는 하나님의 구원 또한 전하고 있지요. 이를 통해 우리는 하나님의 구원은 인간의 공로가 아닌 하나님의 주권적인 개입이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 오늘은 “그럼에도 불구하고 구원하시는 하나님을 찬양하라” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction: The Mirror of History]

Starting today and over the next three days, we will be looking at Psalm 106. Yesterday’s passage, Psalm 105, was a historical psalm that focused on God’s faithfulness as revealed in the Pentateuch. Psalm 106 is also a historical psalm, but it carries a different tone. Unlike Psalm 105, it focuses on the repeated sins of Israel throughout their history.

Yet, there is a profound reason to be thankful: this Psalm records not only their sins but also the relentless salvation of God that never ceases despite those sins. Through this, we learn that God’s salvation is not a result of human merit, but of His sovereign intervention. Today, I want to share a message titled: “Praise the God Who Saves Nevertheless.”

         먼저 1-3절입니다. 시인은 사람들에게 하나님을 찬양하며 여호와께 감사하라고 명령하고 있습니다. 하나님은 선하시고 그 인자하심이 영원하기 때문이라고 말하고 있는데 앞으로 나올 시의 내용을 생각하면 이는 진정 진심으로 하는 말이 아닐 수 없습니다. 이는 그들의 조상과 그들이 모두 하나님께 범죄하였음에도 하나님께서 당신의 권능으로 이들을 구원하여 주셨기 때문입니다. 그래서 2절은 하나님의 권능이 얼마나 크시고 그가 받으실 찬양이 얼마나 많은지 사람은 능히 할 수 없다고 강조해서 말하고 있지요. 다만 사람이 복을 받는 길은 그 하나님의 정의를 지키며 공의를 항상 행하는 것이라고 말하고 있는 것입니다.

[1. The Command to Praise and the Secret of Blessing (v. 1-3)]

In verses 1–3, the psalmist commands the people to praise the Lord and give thanks, for He is good and His steadfast love endures forever. Considering the content that follows, these are truly heart-wrenching words of sincerity. The psalmist can say this because even though their ancestors—and they themselves—sinned against God, He still saved them by His power.

Verse 2 emphasizes that God’s mighty deeds are so vast and His praises so numerous that no human can fully utter them. Amidst this greatness, the psalmist points out the path to being blessed: it is to observe justice and to do righteousness at all times.

         4-6절은 마치 화자가 이런 구원의 하나님께서 나를 기억하시고 나를 돌보아 달라고 말하는 것 같습니다. 그러나 이 말씀을 자세히 보시면 이 기도는 나를 향한 기도가 아니라 화자가 속해 있는 공동체를 위한 간구임을 보실 수 있습니다. 특별히 그는 그 공동체가 하나님의 소유임을 강조 함으로 하나님께 간구하고 있습니다. “주의 백성에게 베푸시는 은혜로, 주의 택하신 자가 형통함, 주의 나라의 기쁨, 주의 유산을 자랑하게 하소서.” 모두 그의 공동체가 하나님의 백성, 하나님의 소유된 자들임을 강조하고 있지요. 하나님께서 하나님의 이름을 위하여 당신의 소유된 백성들을 다시 긍휼히 여겨 달라는 것입니다. 또한 그는 하나님의 소유된 자신의 공동체가 형통하고 기쁨을 누리고 유산을 자랑하는 것이 곧 자신이 누림과 같다고 말하고 있지요. 즉 화자에게는 자신과 공동체가 하나인 것입니다. 그는 공동체를 위한 중보자인 것이지요.

         시인의 이런 중보자의 면모가 직접적으로 드러나는 것이 바로 6절입니다. 그는 고백합니다. 우리가 우리의 조상들처럼 범죄하였습니다. 그는 자신을 공동체와 하나로 여겼을 뿐만 아니라 이제 조상들과 지금의 공동체를 하나로 묶고 있습니다. 그래서 조상들의 죄악이 그저 조상들만의 죄악이 아니라 세대를 관통하여 자신들에게도 똑같이 일어나고 있다고 고백하는 것이지요. 그것을 인정함으로 그는 자신이 속한 공동체를 위한 회개 뿐만 아니라 그들의 조상들의 죄악까지도 회개하는 놀라운 고백을 하고 있는 것입니다. 그는 세가지 다른 동사를 사용하여서 그들의 죄악이 얼마나 심각한 것인지 묘사하고 있습니다. 6절에 “범죄하여” 빗나갔다는 뜻입니다. 죄의 가장 기본적인 형태이지요. 의도하지 않은 실수나 실패를 포함하는 단어입니다. 그 다음은 “사악을 행하며” 비틀다라는 뜻입니다. 이제는 의도적으로 마음과 생각이 뒤틀려버린 상태를 말하고 있습니다. “악을 지었나이다” 반역을 하였다. 하나님을 의지적으로 거부하고 대적하는 행위를 말합니다. 죄가 점점 자라나는 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

[2. The Intercessor’s Heart: Identifying with the Community (v. 4-6)]

In verses 4–6, it may seem at first that the speaker is asking for God to remember and visit only him. However, a closer look reveals that this is a plea for the entire community. He highlights that the community belongs to God: “the favor you show to your people,” “the prosperity of your chosen ones,” “the gladness of your nation,” and “your inheritance.” He is pleading for God to show mercy to those who are His own, for His name’s sake. To the psalmist, the community’s joy is his joy. He is acting as an intercessor.

This heart of an intercessor is most clearly seen in verse 6. He confesses, "Both we and our fathers have sinned." He not only identifies himself with the current community but also links the current generation with their ancestors. He acknowledges that their sin is not just a past event but a recurring reality through the generations. In this confession, he uses three different verbs to describe the gravity of their sin:

·       “We have sinned”: To miss the mark. This is the most basic form of sin, including unintentional mistakes.

·       “We have committed iniquity”: To twist or pervert. This refers to a heart and mind that are intentionally distorted.

·       “We have done wickedly”: To rebel. This is the active act of rejecting and opposing God. We see here the progression and growth of sin.

         자, 이제 7절을 보십시오. 조상들이 똑같이 행하였습니다. 애굽에서 처음에는 주의 기이한 일들을 보고도 깨닫지 못하였습니다. 그리고 주의 크신 인자를 기억하지 않았습니다. 그리고 바다, 곧 홍해에서 하나님을 거역하였습니다. 화자는 그 바다를 홍해라고 분명히 강조하고 있지요. 왜 일까요? 홍해는 어떤 곳입니까? 이스라엘 역사상 가장 위대한 구원과 기적의 장소입니다. 그런데 시인은 바로 그 장소를 반역의 장소로 재규정하고 있는 것입니다. 그런데 여기에 놀라운 신비가 있습니다. 빗나가고, 뒤틀리고, 반역에 이르기까지 그들의 죄악이 너무 커졌습니다. 그런데 이스라엘 역사상 가장 위대한 구원이 믿음 좋은 백성들에게 주어지는 상급으로 내렸던 것이 아니라 하나님을 거역하는 반역자들에게 일방적으로 내려진 순전한 은혜였다는 것입니다. 홍해는 이스라엘의 위대한 믿음이 증명된 영광의 장소가 아니었습니다. 하나님이 약속하신 기적과 구원에도 불구하고 끝까지 불신하고 반역했던 인간의 전적인 무능함과 그럼에도 불구하고 그런 이스라엘을 끝까지 포기하지 않으시는 하나님의 구원의 은혜가 드러난 장소였던 것입니다. 그러나 여호와께서는 자기의 이름을 위하여 그들을 구원하셨다. 8-11절은 그 하나님의 구원이 완전한 구원이었음을 말하고 있습니다. 그들의 대적들은 하나도 살아남지 못하였다고 말하고 있지 않습니까?

[3. The Mystery of the Red Sea: Grace for Rebels (v. 7-12)]

Now, look at verse 7. Their ancestors did the same. In Egypt, they did not consider God’s miracles or remember His abundant steadfast love. Instead, they rebelled at the sea—specifically at the Red Sea.

Why does the psalmist emphasize the Red Sea? Because the Red Sea is the site of the greatest miracle and salvation in Israel’s history. Yet, the psalmist redefines this place as a site of rebellion. Herein lies a marvelous mystery: their sin had grown from missing the mark to twistedness and outright rebellion. Therefore, the greatest salvation in Israel's history was not a reward given to a faithful people; it was pure, unilateral grace bestowed upon rebels who were actively opposing God.

The Red Sea was not a stage where Israel’s great faith was proven. It was a place that exposed total human depravity—where people remained unbelieving and rebellious despite promised miracles—and a place that revealed the overwhelming grace of a God who refuses to give up on His people. Verse 8 declares: “Yet he saved them for his name’s sake.” Verses 8–11 show that this salvation was complete; not one of their adversaries was left.

         말씀을 맺습니다. 본문의 말씀은 다시 한번 우리에게 구원이 전적인 하나님의 은혜임을 보여주고 있습니다. 바로 그렇기에 오늘 시편의 화자는 자신의 공동체를 위해 하나님께 중보하며 기도하고 있는 것이지요. 그 하나님의 은혜가 자신의 조상들에게 임했던 것처럼 우리에게도 임하게 해달라고 기도하는 것입니다. 또한 우리의 자격 없음과 하나님의 은혜를 생각할 때에 그는 어떤 상황에서도 하나님을 찬양하며 감사할 수 있는 것입니다. 그는 하나님이 선하시며 그 신실하신 사랑이 영원 무궁하심을 알았기 때문입니다. 우리도 이 시인의 기도에 동참하기를 원합니다. 기도하시겠습니다.

[Conclusion: Salvation is Total Grace]

In conclusion: Today’s passage shows us once again that salvation is entirely by God's grace. This is why the psalmist intercedes for his community, praying that the same grace that fell upon their ancestors would fall upon them today. When we consider our lack of merit alongside God’s abundant grace, we can praise Him and give thanks in any situation. This is because we know that God is good and His faithful love endures forever. May we all join in the psalmist’s prayer today.
