27:1 새벽에 모든 대제사장과 백성의 장로들이 예수를 죽이려고 함께 의논하고

27:2 결박하여 끌고 가서 총독 빌라도에게 넘겨 주니라

1 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

27:3 그 때에 예수를 판 유다가 그의 정죄됨을 보고 스스로 뉘우쳐 그 은 삼십을 대제사장들과 장로들에게 도로 갖다 주며

27:4 이르되 내가 무죄한 피를 팔고 죄를 범하였도다 하니 그들이 이르되 그것이 우리에게 무슨 상관이냐 네가 당하라 하거늘

27:5 유다가 은을 성소에 던져 넣고 물러가서 스스로 목매어 죽은지라

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”

5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

27:6 대제사장들이 그 은을 거두며 이르되 이것은 핏값이라 성전고에 넣어 둠이 옳지 않다 하고

27:7 의논한 후 이것으로 토기장이의 밭을 사서 나그네의 묘지를 삼았으니

27:8 그러므로 오늘날까지 그 밭을 피밭이라 일컫느니라

27:9 이에 선지자 예레미야를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어졌나니 일렀으되 그들이 그 가격 매겨진 자 곧 이스라엘 자손 중에서 가격 매긴 자의 가격 곧 은 삼십을 가지고

27:10 토기장이의 밭 값으로 주었으니 이는 주께서 내게 명하신 바와 같으니라 하였더라

6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

누가복음 15장에 기록된 예수님의 탕자의 비유에 등장하는 돌아온 탕자처럼 진정한 회개와 그 결과가 어떠한지를 잘 보여주는 것은 없습니다. 누가는 다음과 같이 탕자 안에서 일어난 변화를 기록하고 있습니다.

이에 스스로 돌이켜 이르되 내 아버지에게는 양식이 풍족한 품꾼이 얼마나 많은가

나는 여기서 주려 죽는구나 내가 일어나 아버지께 가서 이르기를 아버지 내가 하늘과 아버지께 죄를 지었사오니 지금부터는 아버지의 아들이라 일컬음을 감당하지 못하겠나이다

나를 품꾼의 하나로 보소서 하리라 하고 이에 일어나서 아버지께로 돌아가니라 (눅 15:17~20a)

Introduction

Nothing demonstrates the nature and results of true repentance better than the "Prodigal Son" in Luke 15. Luke records the internal transformation of the son as follows:

회개하지 못한 자들 (1~5절)

히브리어에서 우리말 회개로 번역되는 단어는 낙함과 슈브 두 단어입니다. 낙함은 감정적인 슬프과 애통, 후회하는 마음을 의미합니다. 슈브는 실제로 가던 길을 180도 유턴하여 돌이키는 행위를 말합니다. 사실 회개 悔改 라는 단어에는 이미 뉘우치는 것과 고치는 것의 의미가 포함되어 있습니다. 

그러므로 단순히 후회하는 것만으로는 온전한 회개가 될 수 없습니다. 돌아온 탕자는 스스로 돌이킵니다. 스스로 깨닫고 자신의 행동을 후회하여, 죄의 자리에서 일어나 아버지께로 돌아간 것을 의미합니다. 이것이 진짜 회개입니다.

하지만 본문에 등장하는 가룟 유다는 비록 스스로 깨닫고 후회는 했지만, 거기까지였습니다. 끝까지 자신의 자존심대로 잘못된 선택을 합니다. 유다는 아마도 예수께서 죄가 없음을 알았기에 무죄 선고를 받고 풀려날 것으로 생각했던 것 같습니다. 하지만 돌아가는 상황이 자신이 예상했던 것과는 다르게 흘러가자 산헤드린 공의회원들에게 가서 내가 무죄한 피를 팔고 죄를 범하였다(4)고 고백하고, 은 삼십을 성소에 던져 넣습니다. 그리고는 스스로 목매어 죽습니다.

누가는 유다가 목매었던 나무에서 떨어져 배가 터져 창자가 흘러나와 죽었다고 보도합니다(행 1:18). 그의 죽음이 안타까운 것은 이미 예수께서 그를 위하여 대신 저주를 받으시고 나무 십자가에 달려 죽으셨지만, 그는 진정한 회개가 아닌 후회만 하고 결국 자신이 자신의 죄를 지고 나무에 달려 저주 받은 채로 죽은 것입니다.   

또한 전승에 의하면 산헤드린 공의회로부터 예수를 넘겨 받아 그의 무죄함을 알고도 여론에 못 이겨 예수를 십자가에 내어준 총독 빌라도 역시, 후에 사마리아인들 학살 건으로 로마 중앙정부의 소환을 받고 파면되자 자살해 버렸다고 합니다. 의로우신 예수 그리스도를 죽이는 일에 소극적이든 적극적이든 한몫 하고, 후회는 했지만 회개하지 못한 자들의 최후가 동일합니다.

나중 최후 심판의 때에 회개하지 않은 자들의 운명은 바깥 어두운 곳에서 슬피 울며 이를 가는 것입니다.

1. Those Who Failed to Repent (vv. 1–5)

In Hebrew, two words are often translated as "repentance": Nacham and Shub.

• Nacham: Refers to emotional sorrow, lamentation, or a feeling of regret.

• Shub: Refers to the physical act of making a 180-degree U-turn to change one's direction.

True repentance (悔改) involves both "regretting" and "correcting." Merely feeling sorry is not enough. The Prodigal Son "came to his senses," regretted his actions, and then got up to return to his father. This is real repentance.

In contrast, Judas Iscariot realized his mistake and felt regret, but he stopped there. He chose his own prideful path until the end. Judas likely expected Jesus to be declared innocent and released. When things didn't go as planned, he confessed to the Sanhedrin, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood" (v. 4), threw the thirty silver coins into the temple, and hanged himself.

Acts 1:18 reports that he fell headlong and his body burst open. His death is tragic because Jesus had already taken the curse upon Himself by dying on a wooden cross for him. Yet, Judas chose to carry his own sin and died under a curse. Tradition also suggests that Pontius Pilate, who knew Jesus was innocent but yielded to the crowd, eventually committed suicide after being dismissed from office. Whether passive or active, those who played a role in killing Christ and felt regret—but didn't repent—faced the same end. 

베드로와 가룟 유다는 동일하게 예수님을 배신했지만, 진정한 회개를 한 자와 하지 못한 자의 극명한 차이를 보여줍니다.

성경에 등장하는 위인들은 한 명도 빠짐 없이 제대로 회개한 자들이라 할 수 있습니다. 구약의 대표적인 인물은 간음, 살인교사의 죄를 범했던 다윗 왕입니다. 정말로 비인간적인 죄를 저지른 다윗이지만, 그는 나단 선지자의 지적을 받고 진심으로 하나님 앞에 회개합니다. 시편 51편이 그의 회개의 시입니다. 이러한 다윗의 회개는 그를 이스라엘의 가장 위대한 왕으로, 하나님 마음에 합한 자로 설 수 있게 합니다.

또한 신약에서는 사도 바울을 들 수 있습니다. 그는 예수를 믿는 자를 잡아 죽이는 살인자였습니다. 스데반 집사도 그의 손에 의해 죽었습니다. 그는 스스로를 죄인 중에 내가 괴수(딤전 1:15)라고 고백합니다. 그의 진정한 회개는 그를 사도 가운데 가장 위대한 사도로, 이방인의 사도로 설 수 있는 기초를 마련합니다. 그는 기독교 신학의 기초를 놓은 위대한 신학자이자 사도였습니다.

이것이 참 회개의 은혜입니다. 신앙생활은 결국 회개의 싸움이라고 해도 과언이 아닙니다. 다 같은 죄인들 가운데 누가 얼마나 진정으로 회개하고, 날마다 하나님께로 돌이키느냐의 싸움입니다. 그러므로 제일 어리석은 자는 회개하지 않는 자입니다. 하나님 앞에 자존심을 세우는 자입니다. 탕자를 기억하십시오! 부끄러움도 민망함도 없습니다. 그저 종으로만 여겨주셔도 감사할 뿐입니다. 이것이 참 회개의 자세입니다.

2. Figures of True Repentance

The difference between Peter and Judas is stark: both betrayed Jesus, but only one truly repented. Every great figure in the Bible was a person who repented properly.

• King David: Committed adultery and murder. When confronted by the prophet Nathan, he repented sincerely. Psalm 51 is his poem of repentance, which allowed him to remain "a man after God's own heart."

• Apostle Paul: A murderer who persecuted believers. He confessed he was the "chief of sinners" (1 Tim 1:15). His repentance became the foundation for him to become the greatest apostle to the Gentiles and a pillar of Christian theology.

Christian life is ultimately a "battle of repentance." It is a struggle of who, among all sinners, turns back to God most sincerely each day. The most foolish person is one who refuses to repent out of pride. Remember the Prodigal Son! He had no shame or ego left; he was simply grateful to be considered a servant. That is the posture of true repentance.

화려한 악덕 (6~8절)

대제사장들과 장로들은 아주 악한 자들임이 본문에서 드러납니다. 그들은 자신들에게 사형을 집행할 권한이 없음을 핑계로 빌라도에게 예수를 죽이는 역할을 넘깁니다. 사실 이들은 얼마든지 돌을 던져 자신들의 뜻대로 예수를 죽일 수 있습니다. 하지만 로마의 십자가 형벌을 받아야지만 예수가 의인이 아닌 죄인이었다는 것이 증명되기 때문에 빌라도에게 넘긴 것입니다.

그러나 마태는 이미 가룟 유다의 내가 무죄한 피를 팔고 죄를 범하였다(4)라고 기록함으로 예수님이 죄가 없음을 증명하였습니다. 그들은 자신들이 예수를 잡아 죽이면서도 가룟 유다의 마지막 양심의 고백에도 그것이 우리에게 무슨 상관이냐며 그 피 값을 네가 당하라(4b)라고 저주합니다.

이제 예수님의 몸값 은 삼십이 남았습니다. 대제사장들과 장로들은 이 돈이 피 값으로 부정한 돈인지라 성전고에 넣을 수 없으니, 토기장이의 밭을 사서 나그네의 묘지를 삼기로 결정합니다. 이는 예루살렘에 순례자로 왔다가 갑자기 죽은 자들을 위한 묘지로 사용하는 것입니다. 어찌 보면 매우 귀한 사회사업이라 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 사람들은 그 밭을 피 밭이라고 부릅니다. 그 밭을 아겔다마라 하니 이는 피 밭이라는 뜻이라(행 1:19b)

그들이 아무리 선을 행하는 척 하지만 그것은 마틴 루터가 말한 것처럼 화려한 악덕에 지나지 않습니다. 그래서 현재도 그 피 밭이라고 전해지는 장소는 악한 회의의 언덕the Hill of Evil Counsel 이라는 별명이 붙어있다고 합니다. 

3. "Splendid Vices" (vv. 6–8)

The chief priests and elders reveal their extreme wickedness. They handed Jesus to Pilate to avoid the responsibility of execution, wanting Him to die on a Roman cross to prove He was a "sinner" and not a "righteous man."

Despite their schemes, Matthew proves Jesus' innocence through Judas' confession. When Judas tried to return the money, they coldly replied, "What is that to us? That’s your responsibility" (v. 4b). Because the thirty pieces of silver were "blood money," they couldn't put it in the temple treasury. Instead, they bought a potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.

On the surface, this looks like a noble social service. However, Martin Luther called such acts "splendid vices." People still called it the "Field of Blood" (Akeldama). Even today, the site associated with this field is nicknamed "The Hill of Evil Counsel."

말씀을 이루려 하심이라 (9~10절)

마태는 계속해서 이 모든 일들이 선지자로 하신 말씀을 이룬 것이라고 보도합니다. 그런데 마태가 예레미야를 통하여 하신 말씀이라고 인용한 말씀은 사실 스가랴(11:12~13) 선지자의 예언과 일치합니다.

이에 대한 학자들의 의견이 분분하지만, 예레미야서와 스가랴서 모두를 인용하면서 대선지자인 예레미야를 대표로 언급했다는 주장이 합리적입니다. 어떤 선지자의 예언이든지 간에 분명한 것은 하나님의 말씀은 반드시 이루어진다는 사실입니다.

이제 유일하게 남은 예언의 말씀인 주님의 재림도 이루어질 것입니다. 그때에 당황하는 일이 없기 위해서는 날마다 회개해야 합니다. 후회가 아닌 회개입니다. 비슷한 것 같지만 그 둘의 결과는 엄청난 차이가 있습니다. 후회만 하는 감정의 소비가 아니라, 삶이 변화하는 회개를 합시다! 예수님은 후회하라고 십자가에서 죽으신 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 회개하도록 길을 열어주신 것입니다. 아버지께 돌아갈 수 있는 유일한 길입니다. 회개합시다!

4. Fulfilling the Word (vv. 9–10)

Matthew emphasizes that these events fulfilled the words of the prophets. While he attributes the quote to Jeremiah, it closely aligns with Zechariah 11:12–13. Scholars suggest Matthew cited Jeremiah as the representative of the major prophets while referencing both.

Regardless of the specific prophet, the point is clear: God's Word is always fulfilled. Just as these prophecies came true, the final remaining prophecy—the Second Coming—will also happen. To avoid being caught off guard, we must repent daily.

Conclusion

Let us not engage in a mere "consumption of emotion" through regret. Let us practice repentance that changes our lives. Jesus did not die on the cross so we would just feel sorry; He died to open the way for us to repent and return to the Father. Repentance is the only way back. Let us repent!
