9:27 예수께서 거기에서 떠나가실새 두 맹인이 따라오며 소리 질러 이르되 다윗의 자손이여 우리를 불쌍히 여기소서 하더니

[Jesus Heals the Blind and the Mute]

27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”

9:28 예수께서 집에 들어가시매 맹인들이 그에게 나아오거늘 예수께서 이르시되 내가 능히 이 일 할 줄을 믿느냐 대답하되 주여 그러하오이다 하니

28 When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?”

“Yes, Lord,” they replied.

9:29 이에 예수께서 그들의 눈을 만지시며 이르시되 너희 믿음대로 되라 하시니

9:30 그 눈들이 밝아진지라 예수께서 엄히 경고하시되 삼가 아무에게도 알리지 말라 하셨으나

9:31 그들이 나가서 예수의 소문을 그 온 땅에 퍼뜨리니라

29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you”; 30 and their sight was restored. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news about him all over that region.

9:32 그들이 나갈 때에 귀신 들려 말 못하는 사람을 예수께 데려오니

9:33 귀신이 쫓겨나고 말 못하는 사람이 말하거늘 무리가 놀랍게 여겨 이르되 이스라엘 가운데서 이런 일을 본 적이 없다 하되

32 While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. 33 And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”

9:34 바리새인들은 이르되 그가 귀신의 왕을 의지하여 귀신을 쫓아낸다 하더라

34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”

9:35 예수께서 모든 도시와 마을에 두루 다니사 그들의 회당에서 가르치시며 천국 복음을 전파하시며 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치시니라

9:36 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기시니 이는 그들이 목자 없는 양과 같이 고생하며 기진함이라

9:37 이에 제자들에게 이르시되 추수할 것은 많되 일꾼이 적으니

9:38 그러므로 추수하는 주인에게 청하여 추수할 일꾼들을 보내어 주소서 하라 하시니라

[The Workers Are Few]

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

            오늘 말씀은 예수님의 기적 모음의 마지막 부분입니다. 우리는 이 부분을 통해 질병을 고치시고 바람과 바다도 순종하며 귀신들마저 순종하는 예수님의 절대적인 권능을 봅니다. 그런데 그런 절대적인 권능을 가지신 분이 오늘 말씀을 보니 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기셨다고 합니다. 이것이 얼마나 큰 은혜인지 모릅니다. 오늘은 “우리를 불쌍히 여기시는 권능의 주님”이라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

[Introduction]

Today’s passage brings us to the conclusion of a series of miracles performed by Jesus. Throughout these accounts, we have witnessed His absolute authority—authority that heals diseases, commands the wind and the sea, and even subdues demons.

Yet, what is truly overwhelming is that this Lord of absolute power looked at the crowds and "had compassion on them." This is an immeasurable grace. Today, I want to share a message titled: "The Lord of Power Who Has Compassion on Us."

            먼저 두 맹인의 이야기를 보기 원합니다. 이들은 예수님을 따라오며 소리 질렀습니다. “다윗의 자손이여 우리를 불쌍히 여기소서.” 이들은 예수님이 다윗의 자손, 즉  유대인들이 기대한 메시아이신 것을 믿었습니다. 마태복음에서 처음으로 예수님의 치유하심을 다윗의 자손, 즉 메시아와 연결한 부분이 오늘 본문이지요. 에스겔서 34:23은 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “내가 한 목자를 그들 위에 세워 먹이게 하리니 그는 내 종 다윗이라” 이 목자가 바로 예수님이시라는 것이지요. 예수님께서는 양을 먹이는 목자의 마음으로 이 맹인들을 불쌍히 여기셨습니다. 오늘36절의 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 함께 한번 읽어보겠습니다. “무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기시니 이는 그들이 목자 없는 양과 같이 고생하며 기진함이라.” 이것이 목자 된 예수님의 마음입니다. 고단한 인생길 가운데 목자 없는 양같이 고생하며 기진하고 있는 우리를 불쌍히 여기시는 예수님의 마음입니다.

1. The Shepherd’s Heart (Verses 27-31, 36)

First, let’s look at the story of the two blind men. As they followed Jesus, they cried out: "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" By calling Him the "Son of David," they expressed their faith that Jesus was the long-awaited Messiah of Israel. In fact, this is the first time in the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus' healing ministry is explicitly linked to His identity as the Son of David—the Messiah.

Ezekiel 34:23 says: "I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them." Jesus is that very Shepherd. He looked at these blind men with the heart of a shepherd tending his sheep. We see this same heart in verse 36. Let’s read it together:

"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd."

This is the heart of our Shepherd, Jesus. He looks at us—struggling, weary, and worn out by the hardships of life—and He is moved with deep compassion.

            그런데 오늘 말씀을 보니 이 예수님의 권능과 긍휼하심에 사람들은 다르게 반응합니다. 두 맹인은 예수님께 우리를 불쌍히 여겨달라고 외칩니다. 예수님께서 능히 자신들을 치유하실 것을 믿는다고 고백합니다. “주여 그러하오이다” 라고 말하는 그들은 그들의 믿음대로 예수님의 긍휼하심을 입어 나음을 받았습니다. 그 뒤에는 무슨 일이 일어났습니까? 귀신들려 말 못하는 사람의 귀신이 쫓겨나고 그의 입이 열려 말을 하기 시작합니다. 그런데 바리새인들은 그것을 보고도 예수님의 권능을 믿지 않습니다. 무리가 놀랍게 여겨 “이스라엘 가운데서 이런 일을 본 적이 없다” 고 말합니다. 그런데도 그들은 예수님의 권능을 인정하지 않고 예수님께서 귀신의 왕을 통하여 귀신을 쫓아낸다는 말을 하고 있습니다. 그들은 예수님의 권능도, 예수님의 긍휼하심도 믿지 않았습니다.

2. Contrasting Reactions to His Power (Verses 28-34)

In today's passage, however, we see two very different reactions to Jesus’ power and compassion.

On one hand, the two blind men cried out for mercy. When Jesus asked if they believed He could heal them, they confessed: "Yes, Lord." Because of their faith, they experienced His compassion and were healed. Immediately following this, a man who was demon-possessed and could not speak was brought to Jesus. The demon was driven out, and the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed, saying, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!"

On the other hand, the Pharisees saw the same miracles but refused to believe. Despite witnessing His absolute authority, they rejected Him, claiming, "It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons." They closed their hearts to both His power and His compassion.

            말씀을 맺습니다. 우리는 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치시는 권능을 가지신 예수님을 봅니다. 바로 그런 예수님이 우리를 불쌍히 여기십니다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 그 예수님의 권능을 믿고 우리를 불쌍히 여기시는 예수님께 우리를 맡기는 것입니다. 그때에 우리의 감겼던 눈이 트여질 것이고 우리의 막혔던 입이 열리게 될 것입니다. 예수님께 나아와 외쳤던 두 맹인처럼 우리도 예수님께 외쳐 부르기 원합니다. “예수님 우리를 불쌍히 여기소서.” 기도하시겠습니다.

[Conclusion]

We see Jesus today as the One who has the power to heal every disease and every sickness. And it is this very Jesus who looks at us with pity and mercy.

Our task is simple: to believe in His power and to entrust ourselves to the One who has compassion on us. When we do, our blinded eyes will be opened, and our silent tongues will be loosened to praise Him. Like the two blind men who came to Jesus, let us also cry out to Him today:

"Lord Jesus, have mercy on us."
