Jesus Heals Many

14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.

8:16 저물매 사람들이 귀신 들린 자를 많이 데리고 예수께 오거늘 예수께서 말씀으로 귀신들을 쫓아 내시고 병든 자들을 다 고치시니

8:17 이는 선지자 이사야를 통하여 하신 말씀에 우리의 연약한 것을 친히 담당하시고 병을 짊어지셨도다 함을 이루려 하심이더라

16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities

    and bore our diseases.”

8:18 예수께서 무리가 자기를 에워싸는 것을 보시고 건너편으로 가기를 명하시니라

8:19 한 서기관이 나아와 예수께 말씀하되 선생님이여 어디로 가시든지 저는 따르리이다

The Cost of Following Jesus

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

8:20 예수께서 이르시되 여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 거처가 있으되 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다 하시더라

20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

8:21 제자 중에 또 한 사람이 이르되 주여 내가 먼저 가서 내 아버지를 장사하게 허락하옵소서

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

8:22 예수께서 이르시되 죽은 자들이 그들의 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하고 너는 나를 따르라 하시니라

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

어제 본문에 이어서 오늘 예수님의 세 번째 치유 사역이 이루어집니다. 그러나 이렇게 연달아 소개된 치유 사역은 단순히 예수님의 능력과 기적만을 우리에게 말하지 않습니다. 오늘 본문을 통해 예수님은 우리에게 진정한 제자도가 무엇인지 알려주십니다. 그리고 본문 속 세 명의 인물들과의 상호작용을 통해 우리가 그것을 배울 수 있습니다. 바로 베드로의 장모, 서기관, 그리고 제자 중 한 사람입니다. 누가 과연 주님을 따르는 참 제자인지 살펴봅시다.

Following yesterday’s passage, today we see Jesus’ third healing ministry take place. However, these successive accounts of healing do not merely tell us about Jesus’ power and miracles. Through today’s passage, Jesus teaches us what true discipleship really is. We learn this through His interactions with three individuals in the text: Peter’s mother-in-law, a scribe, and one of the disciples. Let us examine who truly is a disciple who follows the Lord.

먼저 베드로의 장모를 통해서 제자란 예수님의 치유하시는 은혜를 경험한 자들임을 배웁니다.

14절에 예수님께서는 베드로의 집으로 들어가셔서 열병으로 앓아 누워있는 베드로의 장모를 봤습니다. 이 열병은 말라리아일 가능성이 높은데요. 당시 의술로는 고치기 힘든 병으로 목숨이 위태로웠을 것입니다. 예수님께서는 앞서 나병환자에게 하셨던 것처럼 15절에 그녀에게 직접 손을 대십니다. 그리고 그러자마자 열병이 치유가되고 베드로의 장모는 치유를 받습니다. 예수님께서 이렇게 병자들을 치유하실 때 반복해서 손을 사용하여 만져주시는 모습은 예수님의 긍휼한 마음을 잘 보여줍니다.

그 다음 놀라운 일은 그녀가 바로 예수님을 섬겼다는 것입니다. 예수님은 이렇게 병든 자를 치유하시고, 구원을 베푸시며, 새롭게 태어난 자로서 새로운 비전을 주시어, 하나님의 나라를 위해 섬기는 자로 부르십니다. 예수님께서는 이제 우리가 일어나 섬기기를 원합니다. 그러기에 우리에게 말로 형용할 수 없는 구원의 기쁨을 주시고, 간증거리를 주시고, 이 받은 은혜를 다른 이들에게 똑같이 흘리라고 알려주십니다. 삶 가운데 상처입고 소외된 자들에게 치유의 예수님을 전하는 여러분들 되시기를 기도드립니다.

First, through Peter’s mother-in-law, we learn that disciples are those who have experienced the grace of Jesus’ healing. In verse 14, Jesus enters Peter’s house and sees Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. This fever was most likely malaria, a disease that was difficult to cure with the medical knowledge of the time and could have been life-threatening. Just as He did with the leper earlier, Jesus personally touches her in verse 15. Immediately, the fever leaves her, and she is healed. The repeated image of Jesus touching the sick when He heals them reveals His compassionate heart. What is even more remarkable is what follows—she immediately begins to serve Jesus. Jesus heals the sick, grants salvation, gives a new vision as one who is born anew, and calls them to serve for the sake of the kingdom of God. Jesus now desires that we also rise and serve. That is why He gives us the indescribable joy of salvation, testimonies of grace, and calls us to pour out the grace we have received to others in the same way. I pray that you may become people who share Jesus the Healer with those who are wounded and marginalized in their lives.

다음으로 고난을 받는 종으로 오신 예수님을 따르는 제자는 같은 고난의 길을 걸을 수 밖에 없습니다. 

18절에 예수님께서 제자들에게 호수 건너편으로 가자고 하실 때 한 서기관이 다가와 고백합니다. 19절에 “선생님이여 어디로 가시든지 저는 따르리이다” 이 말은 상당히 멋있는 신앙 고백 같습니다. 그러나 그는 진정으로 예수님을 따른다는 의미를 이해하지 못하고 이러한 고백을 했습니다. 그에 예수님께서 대답하십니다. “예수께서 이르시되 여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 거처가 있으되 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없다 하시더라” (20절). 머리 둘 곳 없는 삶은 곧 십자가의 길입니다. 17절에 인용된 이사야 53장에도 고난의 종으로서 오신 예수님을 잘 나타내고 있습니다. 서기관은 고난의 길을 가시는 예수님의 제자로 사는 의미를 알지 못했습니다. 우리도 쉽게 말로는 예수님의 제자라고 하면서 배려와 희생보다는 안락과 자기 중심적인 삶을 살지는 않았는지 되돌아 봅시다.

Next, disciples who follow Jesus, who came as the suffering Servant, cannot avoid walking the path of suffering themselves. In verse 18, when Jesus tells His disciples to go to the other side of the lake, a scribe approaches Him and makes a confession. In verse 19 he says, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” This sounds like a wonderful confession of faith. However, he did not truly understand what it meant to follow Jesus. Jesus responds in verse 20: “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” A life with nowhere to lay one’s head is the path of the cross. Isaiah 53, quoted in verse 17, also clearly portrays Jesus as the suffering Servant. The scribe did not understand what it meant to live as a disciple of Jesus who walks the path of suffering. Let us reflect on ourselves as well—have we easily claimed to be disciples of Jesus with our words, yet pursued comfort and self-centered lives rather than consideration and sacrifice?

마지막으로 제자에게 있어서 주님을 따르는 일보다 더 중요하고 급한 일은 없습니다.

21절에 제자 중 한 사람이 주님께 자기 아버지를 먼저 장사하고 따르게 해 달라고 요청합니다. 그러자 예수님께서는 22절에 “죽은 자들이 그들의 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하고 너는 나를 따르라” 하십니다. 여기서 제자가 말하는 장례는 첫 번째 장례가 아니라 1차 매장 이후 남은 뼈를 모아 가족묘에 있는 조상들의 뼈와 합치는 두 번째 매장입니다. 그래서 예수님께서 말하는 ‘죽은 자들’은 무덤에 있는 조상들의 뼈를 의미힙나디. 즉 가족묘에 있는 다른 뼈들이 죽은 아버지의 뼈를 다시 매장하도록 두라는 뜻입니다. 즉 예수님께서는 무엇이 시급하고 무엇을 우선해야 하는지 가르쳐 주십니다. 예수님께서는 ‘지금’ 우리를 부르십니다. 우리의 생각과 때에 의지해서 ‘조금만 있다가,’ ‘상황이 나아지면’이 아니라 주님의 부르심은 ‘지금, 오늘, 당장’입니다. 주님의 부르심에 ‘지금’ 순종하는 여러분 되시기를 기도드립니다.

Lastly, for a disciple, there is nothing more important or urgent than proclaiming the gospel. In verse 21, one of the disciples asks the Lord to allow him to first bury his father before following Him. Jesus responds in verse 22, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and follow Me.” The burial the disciple refers to here is not the initial burial, but the second burial, where bones remaining after the first burial were gathered and placed together with the ancestors’ bones in the family tomb. Thus, the “dead” Jesus refers to are the bones of the ancestors already in the tomb. In other words, Jesus is saying to let those bones in the family tomb take care of burying the father’s bones. Through this, Jesus teaches us what is truly urgent and what must take priority. Jesus calls us now. Not “after a little while,” or “when the situation improves,” but His calling is “now, today, immediately.” I pray that you may be people who obey the Lord’s calling now.

예수님께서는 고난의 종으로 이 땅에 오셔서 그 종의 사역을 완수하셨습니다. 무엇보다도 병든 자를 치유하시고 소외된 자를 부려서서 제자로 삼으셨습니다. 그리고 여기서 병든 자란 단순히 눈에 보이는 육신의 병만을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님께서는 육신의 병과 더불어 우리 속에 있는 마음의 병, 곧 영적 사망 상태를 더욱 주목하십니다. 예수님을 구주로 믿기 전까지 우리는 모두 하나님과 단절된 영적 사망 상태로 사탄 마귀의 지배를 받는 존재입니다. 그렇게 내가 소경인지, 귀머거리인 줄도 모르고 살다가 의사가 필요한 병자임을 깨닫고 진실로 회개했을 때, 구세주 예수님께서 베푸시는 치유의 은혜를 느끼며 참 기쁨을 누립니다. 이제 이렇게 누린 은혜는 섬김으로 완성됨을 우리는 알 수 있습니다. 우리 함께 진정한 순종으로 비록 항상 꽃길은 아닐지라도 주님이 인도하시는 그 좁은 길을 따라 끝까지 승리하시는 성도님들 되시길 바랍니다.

Jesus came to this earth as the suffering Servant and completed His mission. Above all, He healed the sick and raised up the marginalized as His disciples. The sick here do not merely refer to visible physical illnesses. Jesus is even more concerned with the sickness of the heart within us—that is, our state of spiritual death. Before believing in Jesus as our Savior, we are all in a state of spiritual death, cut off from God and under the dominion of Satan. Living without realizing that we are blind or deaf, we come to recognize ourselves as sick people in need of a physician. When we truly repent, we experience the grace of healing bestowed by Jesus our Savior and enjoy true joy. We now understand that this grace we receive is completed through service. May we, with true obedience, follow the narrow path the Lord leads us on—even if it is not always a path of flowers—and persevere to the end in victory.
