15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

16 The territory from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau, including Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination. 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.

25 The territory of Jazer, all the towns of Gilead and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah; 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir; 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Sukkoth and Zaphon with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites, according to their clans.

29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

13:30 그 지역은 마하나임에서부터 온 바산 곧 바산 왕 옥의 온 나라와 바산에 있는 야일의 모든 고을 육십 성읍과

13:31 길르앗 절반과 바산 왕 옥의 나라 성읍 아스다롯과 에드레이라 이는 므낫세의 아들 마길의 자손에게 돌린 것이니 곧 마길 자손의 절반이 그들의 가족대로 받으니라

30 The territory extending from Mahanaim and including all of Bashan, the entire realm of Og king of Bashan—all the settlements of Jair in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan). This was for the descendants of Makir son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.

13:32 요단 동쪽 여리고 맞은편 모압 평지에서 모세가 분배한 기업이 이러하여도

13:33 오직 레위 지파에게는 모세가 기업을 주지 아니하였으니 이는 그들에게 말씀하신 것과 같이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 그들의 기업이 되심이었더라

32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab across the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he promised them.

여러분 모두 추수감사절 휴가 잘 보내셨나요? 저는 휴가를 맞아 남편과 함께 시댁이 있는 켄자스에 다녀왔습니다. 켄자스에는 시부모님뿐만 아니라 시외조부모님도 살고 계시는데요. 올해 초에 외할아버지께서 계단에서 굴러넘어지시는 사건이 일어나 병세가 위급하다라는 소식을 들었었는데 다행히 잘 회복되셔서 다시 한번 만나뵐 수 있게되서 감사한 시간이었습니다. 올해로 88세이신 외할아버지 얘기를 잠깐 하고자 하는데요. 사실 외할아버지께서는 집안에 믿음의 초석을 놓으신 분이십니다. 외할아버지께서는 아이다호주에서 믿지 않는 가정에서 태어나 가정의 석유 비즈니스를 오롯이 넘겨받아 살 운명이였다고 합니다. 그러다 21살 쯤 우연히 보게 된 the Robe이라는 영화에서 예수님의 복음을 들었고 처음에는 믿지 않았다고 합니다. 그 후 어느 날 밤 집 근처 언덕에 올라갔는데 까맣고 청량한 밤 하늘 위에 셀 수 없이 수놓아진 별들 아래서 영화에서 들었던 복음이 기억났다고 합니다. ‘영화에서 본대로 예수님이 하신 일이 진짜일까? 그럼 난 여기서 이렇게 살 수 없다’라고 마음에 결단을 했다고 합니다. 가만히 고향에서 살면 석유 비즈니스를 물려받아 쉬운 인생을 사셨겠지만 그것보다 더 큰 하나님의 뜻을 찾아 떠나야한다는 하나님의 부르심을 강하게 받았다고 합니다. 그렇게 집안의 반대에도 불구하고 캘리포니아로 떠나 대학교를 진학하셨고 그곳에서 교회를 찾고 교회에서 만난 외할머니와 결혼을해서 매 순간을 하나님의 뜻을 구하며 하나님의 인도대로 사셨다고 합니다. 그랬더니 실제로 외할아버지는 50살에 은퇴를 할 정도로 재정의 축복을 누렸다고 합니다. 그럼에도 이제 88세의 나이로 인생의 끝자락에서 되돌아 봤을 때 “이 세상에서 구세주 예수님과의 관계보다 더 중요한 것은 없다”라고 간증하십니다. 외할아버지께서 21살 혈기왕성할 때 내린 그 믿음의 결정이 대를 이어 내려와 이제는 남편과 저의 가정에 믿음의 유산이 되었습니다.

Did you all have a good Thanksgiving break? For the holiday I went with my husband to Kansas to visit his family. In Kansas not only do his parents live there, but his grandparents do as well. Earlier this year we heard that my husband’s grandfather had a serious accident—he fell down the stairs and his condition was critical—but thankfully he recovered well and we were able to see him again, which we’re grateful for. I want to share a little about my grandfather-in-law, who is 88 this year. In fact, he laid the foundation of faith in his family. He was born into an unbelieving family in Idaho and was expected to inherit and run the family’s oil business. Around age 21 he happened to see the movie The Robe and heard the gospel of Jesus, though at first he didn’t believe it. One night later, he went up a hill near his house and, under the pitch-black, crisp night sky studded with countless stars, he remembered the gospel from the movie. He made a decision in his heart: “If what I saw in the movie—what Jesus did—is real, then I cannot stay and live like this.” If he had stayed quietly in his hometown he would likely have led an easy life inheriting the oil business, but he felt a strong call from God to leave and seek a purpose greater than that. Despite opposition from his family, he left for California to go to college. There he found a church, met my grandmother-in-law at that church, married her, and lived every moment seeking God’s will and following God’s guidance. Because of that, my grandfather-in-law was blessed financially to the point that he was able to retire at fifty. Even so, looking back now at the end of his life at age 88, he testifies that “nothing in this world is more important than a relationship with the Savior Jesus.” The faith decision he made in the vigor of his twenties has been passed down through the generations and has become a legacy of faith now in my husband’s and my household.

오늘 본문 말씀을 보면 요단 동편의 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파가 분배받은 기업의 기록이 나옵니다. 이 일은 모세의 리더십 아래 일어난 일이지 여호수아의 영향력 아래에 일어난 사건은 아닙니다. 그럼에도 이 요단 동편의 기업 이야기를 다시 언급하는 이유는 공동체 전체의 연합이 중요하기 때문입니다. 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파는 다 눈에 보이는 땅을 기업으로 받습니다. 이들이 받은 기업은 생존의 기반이자 힘의 상징입니다. 무엇보다 하나님의 언약은 반드시 성취됨을 보여주는 표징입니다. 반면에 레위 지파는 하나님을 기업으로 받습니다. 즉 하나님은 레위 지파에게 하나님 당신을 기업으로 주심으로써 땅보다 더 크고 영원한 기업을 보여주십니다. 이 세상을 살아가는 우리는 지금 어떤 기업을 붙잡고 살아가고 있는지 한번 이 새벽 생각해보길 원합니다.

In today’s passage, we see the record of the inheritance given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh on the east side of the Jordan. This distribution took place under Moses’ leadership, not under Joshua’s. Yet the narrative brings up this east-Jordan inheritance again because the unity of the whole community matters. Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh all received visible land as their inheritance—land that served as the foundation of their livelihood and a symbol of their strength. More importantly, this allotment was a tangible sign that God’s covenant promises are always fulfilled. By contrast, the tribe of Levi received God Himself as their inheritance. God gave His own presence as their portion, demonstrating that He is a greater and more eternal inheritance than any land. As we live in this world today, I pray that we take a moment this morning to reflect on this: What inheritance are we holding on to?

1)    눈에 보이는 기업

먼저 요단 동편의 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파가 분배받은 기업은 그들의 믿음과 신실함으로 정당하게 하나님께로부터 받은 축복입니다. 민수기 32장에서 자세히 살펴봤듯이 가나안 땅에 들어가기 전에 많은 가축 떼를 가졌던 르우벤과 갓 지파는 모세에게 목초지가 좋은 땅을 요청했습니다. 그리고 모세와 언약을 맺습니다. 그것은 바로 나머지 지파들과 함께 정복 전쟁에 참여할 것이며 요단강 서쪽 땅은 받지 않겠다는 약속입니다 (민 32:18-19). 그리고 이들은 신실히 그 약속을 이행했습니다. 그렇게 르우벤은 요단 동족 남부 지역을, 갓은 중부 지역을, 므낫세 반 지파는 북부 지역을 기업으로 받았습니다. 여러분 근데 이들이 받은 이 축복의 땅이 어떤 결론을 맞이하는지 아십니까? 역대상 5장 25절을 보면 이렇게 나옵니다. “그들이 그들의 조상들의 하나님께 범죄하여 하나님이 그들 앞에서 멸하신 그 땅 백성의 신들을 간음하듯 섬긴지라.” 역대상 5장의 시대적 배경은 솔로몬 사후 왕국이 분열된 후 약 400년 뒤입니다. 이들은 여러 방식으로 하나님의 인도하심과 보호하심을 경험했습니다. 그러나 결국 그들은 우상숭배라는 간음죄를 저질렀고 하나님은 그들을 심판하심으로 다루십니다. 결국 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파는 앗수르 제국에 의해 포로로 잡혀갑니다. 그리고 그렇게 멸망합니다. 눈에 보이는 땅이나 재산은 하나님이 주시는 축복입니다. 그러나 하나님을 향한 중심이 흔들릴 때 그것들은 더 이상 축복이 아닙니다. 하나님과의 관계를 무너뜨리는 것들은 그 어떠한 것들이라도 다 우상이며 우상숭배는 하나님이 가장 싫어하시는 것입니다. 그러므로 하나님이 주신 축복이라고 할지라도 눈에 보이는 성공은 언제든지 사라질 수 있습니다. 세상의 기업은 영원하지 않습니다.

1)    Visible inheritance

The allotments given to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh on the east side of the Jordan were blessings they rightfully received from God because of their faithfulness. As we studied in Numbers 32, before entering Canaan the tribes of Reuben and Gad owned many cattle and requested pasturelands from Moses. They made a covenant with Moses: they would take part in the conquest with the other tribes and would not claim land west of the Jordan (Num 32:18–19). They kept that promise faithfully. Reuben received the southern area east of the Jordan, Gad the central area, and the half-tribe of Manasseh the northern area. Do you know how that blessed land eventually fared? 1 Chronicles 5:25 says, “They sinned against the God of their fathers and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.” The background of 1 Chronicles 5 is about 400 years after the kingdom split following Solomon. Although these tribes experienced God’s guidance and protection in many ways, they ultimately committed the adultery of idolatry and were judged by God. Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh were carried off into exile by the Assyrian empire and destroyed. Visible land and property are blessings from God, but if our devotion to God wavers those blessings cease to be blessings. Anything that breaks our relationship with God becomes an idol—and idolatry is what God hates most. Even blessings given by God—visible success—can vanish. The world’s inheritances are not eternal.

2)    눈에 보이지 않는 기업

반면에 땅 대신 하나님을 기업으로 받은 지파가 있습니다. 바로 레위 지파입니다. 이는 눈에 보이는 땅보다 하나님이 더 귀한 기업임을 보여줍니다. 레위 지파의 존재는 다른 지파들에게도 ‘땅’이 아니라, 그 땅을 주시는 ‘하나님’이 진짜 기업이라는 사실을 증명하는 역할을 했던 것입니다. 오늘 본문 33절은 앞서 읽어본 14절과 짝을 이루는데요. 14절은 레위인이 받은 유업이 화제물이라고 말하고, 33절은 하나님이라고 말합니다. 이것은 다른 것이 아니라 화제물이 '여호와께서 기업'이라는 이 진술을 구체적이고 시각적으로 실현하는 방식임을 알려줍니다. 결국 제물을 통해서 하나님이 당신을 레위인의 몫으로 주시는 것이기 때문입니다. 그리고 이스라엘 백성은 레위인을 통해 땅 가운데에서 하나님을 예배하게 됩니다. 이처럼 레위 지파는 땅을 기업으로 받지 못했지만 하나님이 친히 그들의 기업이 되어 주셨습니다. 그리고 레위 지파의 기업은 앞서 살펴본 르우벤, 갓, 므낫세 반 지파의 기업이 앗수르에게 빼앗김을 당한 것과는 달리 결코 빼앗기지 않습니다. 결국 눈에 보이는 기업보다 영원한 하나님을 기업으로 삼는 삶이 더욱 복되는 삶입니다.

2) Invisible inheritance

By contrast, the Levites received God Himself as their inheritance. This shows that God is a more precious inheritance than visible land. The Levites’ presence among the tribes testified that the true inheritance is not land but the God who gives the land. Verse 33 of today’s passage pairs with verse 14: verse 14 speaks of the Levites’ portion as offerings, and verse 33 calls that portion the Lord. This isn’t a contradiction but a concrete, visual way of declaring that “the LORD is their inheritance.” Through offerings, God gives Himself as the Levites’ portion, and through the Levites the people of Israel worship God in the land. Though the Levites did not receive land, God Himself became their inheritance. Unlike the allotments given to Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh—which were later taken by Assyria—the Levites’ inheritance cannot be taken away. Ultimately, a life that makes God our eternal inheritance is far more blessed than one clinging to visible inheritances.

오늘 본문에 “~의 지파에게 그들의 가족을 따라서”라는 표현이 자주 등장합니다. 가문이 기업을 상속하는 데 중요한 단위라는 것을 알 수 있는데요. 요즘 “Trust Fund Baby”라는 말을 흔히 들을 수 있습니다. 부모님이나 조부모님께서 상속으로 물려준 신탁 자금으로 평생 일 하지 않아도 살 수 있는 한마디로 금수저 아이들을 말합니다. 쉽게 생각하면 부러울 수 있지만 또 이런 사람들 보면은 인성은 밥 말아 먹은 경우가 많습니다. 예수님의 말씀이 생각납니다. "낙타가 바늘귀로 나가는 것이 부자가 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것보다 쉬우니라" (막 10:25). 한번 진지하게 생각해보길 원합니다. 우리는 어떤 기업을 우리 자녀와 다음 세대에게 물려주고 싶습니까? 우리의 영원하신 기업되시는 하나님을 믿는 믿음을 가장 최우선으로 여길 때, 하나님께서 우리를 책임져 주실 줄로 믿습니다.

The phrase “to the families according to their clans” appears often in the passage, showing that family lines were the key units for passing on inheritance. Today we often hear the term “trust-fund baby”—kids who can live without work because of trusts set up by parents or grandparents. It’s easy to envy them, but frequently such privilege doesn’t produce character. It reminds me of the word of Jesus. "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:25). Think seriously: what inheritance do we want to pass on to our children and the next generation? If we put first the faith that trusts in God—our eternal inheritance—then I believe God will take care of us completely.
