20251204 [새벽묵상] 승리자로 사는 삶 | Living Life as a Victor (수/Josh 13:1~14)

Land Still to Be Taken

1 When Joshua had grown old, the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

2 “This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and Geshurites, 3 from the Shihor River on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites 4 on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek and the border of the Amorites; 5 the area of Byblos; and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath.

6 “As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you, 7 and divide it as an inheritance among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

8 The other half of Manasseh, the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord, had assigned it to them.

9 It extended from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon, 10 and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, out to the border of the Ammonites. 11 It also included Gilead, the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah— 12 that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei. (He was the last of the Rephaites.) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land. 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur and Maakah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.

14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.

[Introduction]

We are currently past Thanksgiving and have Christmas right before us. The months of November and December, with these major holidays, constitute the peak travel season in the United States.

If you are a frequent flyer, you may have noticed that in-flight meals are not what they used to be. On domestic flights these days, meals are often not complimentary, and you have to pay for them directly. However, on long-haul international flights, such as those between Korea and the U.S., various food and beverages are still provided due to the long duration.

Now, imagine someone flying for the very first time—on an international flight, no less. This person, unfamiliar with air travel, politely but persistently refuses all the meals and drinks offered by the flight attendants. Why?

They didn't realize these items were already included in the ticket price. Though hungry, they kept refusing, thinking they had to pay for the food separately. Though this may be a hypothetical story now, I hear that such incidents were quite common among first-time flyers long ago. It is truly a pity—a situation where something is already given to them, yet they fail to take it.

Today's passage presents a similar scenario. God had already given the land of Canaan to Israel. God had already won the victory. All they had to do was take possession of the land. So, what choice did they make? Did they believe in God's victory and take the land? Or did they, like the inexperienced traveler, refuse or delay taking their portion?

Today, I want to share a message about Living Life as a Victor using two contrasting examples.

First Example: Those Who Live as Victors

The first example is of those who live as victors. These are the people who trust in God's finished victory and take the portion allotted to them.

Let’s read verse 1 together:

"When Joshua was old and advanced in years, the Lord said to him, 'You are very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.'"

The text repeats the phrase that Joshua was "old and advanced in years." Joshua is at the end of his life and is no longer able to lead the conquest. Yet, God says, "there are still very large areas of land to be taken over." Does this mean, "You have so much work left to do, and you're running out of time?"

No. In verse 6, God gives Joshua a new instruction. Let’s read it:

"As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out before the Israelites. You are only to allot this land to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you."

God does not command the old Joshua to drive them out. He gives him a new command: "You are only to allot this land to Israel as an inheritance."

Now, what is this land described in verses 2 through 6? It is land that has yet to be taken over. God Himself said there were very large areas remaining! Yet, God commands Joshua to allot this land to Israel as if it were already conquered.

What does this tell us? God has already won the victory. Therefore, those who believe in this victory must claim that land as their portion by faith, even if the land before their eyes is not yet fully conquered. This is not a recommendation; it is a divine command, as God states, "as I have commanded you."

And how can this be a command? Because God promises: "I myself will drive them out before the Israelites." God has won the major battle, and He will drive out the remaining enemies. Those who participate in God's victory must believe this and obey the command to take the remaining land as their portion.

Our lives are the same. Jesus Christ achieved the ultimate victory by dying on the cross, liberating us from the law of sin and death. The greatest victory is already won. Our remaining task is to believe in Jesus' victory and to claim the remaining "land" in our respective areas of life. We must drive out the sins and problems that still remain in that land.

But what happens if we fail to do so?

Second Example: Winning the Battle but Failing to Live as a Victor

The second example is the tragedy of winning the battle but failing to live as a victor.

Let’s read verses 12-13 together:

"All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei and had belonged to the surviving Rephaites. Moses had defeated them and taken possession of their land. But the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, for Geshur and Maacath live among the Israelites to this day."

The text states that Moses defeated and drove out the people of King Og of Bashan—one of the strongest kings east of the Jordan. Yet, despite this massive victory, the Israelites "did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites."

This is strange. They defeated the most formidable enemies, King Sihon and King Og. Was it because the Geshurites and Maacathites were stronger? I doubt it. Perhaps they seemed so insignificant after conquering such powerful foes that the Israelites thought they posed no threat. They might have thought, "We can always drive them out later." Or perhaps, "We've achieved such great things; we don't need to worry about such small, detailed matters."

But what was the result? "Geshur and Maacath live among the Israelites to this day." Despite having achieved an overwhelming victory that melted the hearts of all their enemies, they failed to live as complete victors.

The same applies to our lives. Is there a seemingly trivial sin or problem in your life that seems too minor to deal with? Have you excused it, thinking, "I've fought and overcome so many great spiritual battles and adversities; surely I don't need to worry about this small sin"?

If you do not drive out those small, seemingly harmless "tribes" from the land of your heart, you may have won the war but will ultimately fail to live as a victor, instead coexisting with the very enemies God told you to eliminate.

[Conclusion]

God has already won the victory. And He is commanding us to receive the land—the areas of our lives that have not yet been fully conquered—as our allotted portion.

We must choose: Will we live as a victor, believing in God’s victory and obeying His command to take our portion, trusting that He will drive out the enemy? Or will we, despite being victors, fail to drive out the small enemies in our portion, ultimately coexisting with them in a compromised life?

Remember, this is not a suggestion; it is a command from God.

What is your choice today?
