A Final Charge to Timothy

10 You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

         어제 우리는 거짓을 가르치는 사람들에 대한 말씀을 나누었습니다. 이들에게는 여러 특징이 있었지요. 그러나 그 특징을 한마디로 정리하면 바로 “경건의 모양은 있으나 경건의 능력은 부인하는 것”입니다. 사도 바울은 디모데에게 “이 같은 자들에게서 네가 돌아서라” 라고 까지 강경하게 이야기했지요. 그들은 겉으로 보기에는 지식이 있고 진리를 가르치는 것 같지만 사실은 진리를 대적하며 어리석은 자들이라고 말씀하셨었습니다. 그래서 공동체 안의 지체들을 미혹하는 그들에게서 돌아서라 라고 말씀하셨던 것이지요. 제가 굳이 어제의 말씀을 다시 반복해서 이야기하는 것은 오늘의 본문이 “그러나, 너는” 이라는 말씀으로 시작하기 때문입니다. 무슨 말입니까? 거짓교사들은 이러한 특징들을 가지고 있다. 그러나 너는 다르다. 디모데 너는, 나의 곁에서 나를 따르며 나의 모든 것을 배웠다. 그리고 너는 어려서부터 성경을 알았다. 그 성경이 너를 온전하게 할 것이다. 바로 이것이 오늘 말씀이 우리에게 말하고 있는 것입니다. 오늘은 “그러나 너는 배우고 확신한 일에 거하라” 라는 제목으로 말씀을 전하기 원합니다.

Yesterday, we discussed the people who teach falsehoods. They had several distinct characteristics, which could be summarized in one phrase: "having a form of godliness but denying its power." The Apostle Paul strongly urged Timothy, "Turn away from such people." Although they appeared knowledgeable and seemed to teach the truth on the surface, they were, in fact, adversaries of the truth and foolish. That is why Paul commanded Timothy to turn away from those who were misleading members of the community.

I intentionally repeat yesterday's message because today's passage begins with the phrase, "But as for you." What does this imply? It means, "False teachers have these characteristics. But you are different. Timothy, you have followed me and learned everything from me. And you have known the Holy Scriptures since childhood. That Scripture will make you complete." This is precisely what today's passage tells us.

Today, I want to preach under the title, "But as for You, Continue in What You Have Learned and Have Become Convinced Of."

         디모데가 배우고 확신한 그 첫번째는 바로 스승인 바울의 삶과 신앙, 그 모든 것입니다. 11절의 말씀은 “네가 과연 보고 알았거니와”라고 말하고 있습니다. 이는 원문으로는 “네가 곁에서 나의 이러이러한 것들을 따랐다”라는 말입니다. 그저 보고 알았다는 것이 아니라 디모데가 바울의 가르침, 삶, 태도, 고난까지 포괄적으로 따랐음을 말해주고 있는 것이지요. 마치 스승과 동고동락하며 스승의 삶 전체를 전수하는 제자와 같이 말입니다. 그렇다면 디모데가 추종하였던 바울의 덕목들은 무엇입니까? 10절 말씀을 함께 읽겠습니다. “나의 교훈과 행실과 의향과 믿음과 오래 참음과 사랑과 인내와” 이 일곱 가지 덕목은 바울이 보여 준 참된 교사의 표준이지요. ‘교훈’은 바울의 사도적인 가르침, ‘행실’은 바울의 전반적인 생활 방식과 품행, ‘의향’은 하나님의 뜻을 이루려는 확고한 결심, 그 밖에 믿음, 오래 참음, 사랑, 인내는 그 뜻을 다 아시리라 믿습니다. 그런데 11절을 보니 목록이 더 있습니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “박해를 받음과 고난과 또한 안디옥과 이고니온과 루스드라에서 당한 일과 어떠한 박해를 받은 것을 네가 과연 보고 알았거니와 주께서 이 모든 것 가운데서 나를 건지셨느니라” 자, 여기서 바울은 자신이 박해 받았던 많은 경험들 중에서 안디옥과 이고니온과 루스드라에서 당한 박해를 콕 집어서 이야기합니다. 이는 이 지역이 바로 디모데의 고향이 있던 지역이기 때문입니다. 사도행전 14:19은 루스드라에서  있었던 박해를 이렇게 적고 있습니다. “유대인들이 안디옥과 이고니온에서 와서 무리를 충동하니 그들이 돌로 바울을 쳐서 죽은 줄로 알고 시외로 끌어 내치니라” 루스드라 출신인 디모데는 아마도 직접 그 일을 목격하였을 것입니다. 이것을 알고 있기에 바울은 12절에서 무릇 신앙인이라면 박해를 받는 것을 두려워하거나 이상히 여기면 안된다고 말하고 있는 것입니다. 이는 경건의 모양만 있고 능력은 없는 거짓 교사들과 완전히 반대되는 모습이지요. 13절에서 바울은 이들을 다시 언급합니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “악한 사람들과 속이는 자들은 더욱 악하여져서 속이기도하고 속기도 하나니” 악한 사람들과 속이는 자들은 거짓 교사들에 대한 바울의 정의입니다. 이들이 더욱 악하여 진다는 말은 더 나쁜 상태로 진보한다는 뜻입니다. 아이러니하게도 거짓 교사들이 스스로 진보라고 생각하는 것은 더 큰 악을 향한 진보로 실제로는 진리로부터의 퇴보라는 것입니다. 남을 속이던 그들이 결국 자신마저도 속이게 되는 어리석음에 빠지게 되는 것입니다. 그러나 디모데는 다르지요. 14절 말씀이 이렇게 시작합니다. “그러나, 너는.” 아까의 반복입니다. 10절에서 바울은 “그러나 너는” 나의 이러이러한 것을 곁에서 따랐다라고 적었습니다. 이제 14절에서는 뭐라고 합니까? 함께 읽겠습니다. “그러나 너는 배우고 확신한 일에 거하라 너는 네가 누구에게서 배운 것을 알며” 거짓 가르침과 거짓 교사가 넘치는 세상에서 디모데는 스승인 바울에게서 배웠던 것 가운데 거할 것입니다.

1. What Timothy Learned and Was Convinced Of: The Life and Faith of His Teacher, Paul (vv. 10-14)

What Timothy learned and was convinced of first was the whole life and faith of his teacher, Paul. Verse 11 says, "You have certainly seen and known," which, in the original language, means, "You have closely followed me in these things." It implies that Timothy did not merely see and know, but comprehensively followed Paul's teachings, life, attitude, and even his suffering—like a disciple living and working with his master to inherit his entire way of life.

So, what were the virtues that Timothy closely followed in Paul? Let's read verse 10: "my teaching, conduct, aim in life, faith, patience, love, perseverance." These seven virtues are the standard of a true teacher demonstrated by Paul. 'Teaching' refers to Paul's apostolic instruction; 'conduct' refers to his general way of life and demeanor; and 'aim in life' is his firm resolve to fulfill God's will. I believe the meanings of faith, patience, love, and perseverance are familiar to you all.

But verse 11 adds more to the list. Let's read it together: "persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me."

Here, Paul specifically mentions the persecutions he endured at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. This is significant because these regions were near Timothy's hometown. Acts 14:19 describes the persecution in Lystra: "But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead." Timothy, being from Lystra, likely witnessed this event firsthand.

Knowing this, Paul states in verse 12 that no believer should fear or find it strange to suffer persecution. This is the complete opposite of the false teachers who have a mere form of godliness but lack its power.

Paul refers to these false teachers again in verse 13. Let's read it: "But evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived." "Evil men and impostors" is Paul's definition of false teachers. Paul says they will "go from bad to worse," meaning they will "progress" to a more evil state. The irony is that what these false teachers consider progress is actually a movement toward greater wickedness—a regression from the truth. Those who deceive others eventually fall into the foolishness of deceiving themselves.

But Timothy is different. Verse 14 begins this way: "But as for you." The repetition from verse 10 is clear. In verse 10, Paul wrote, "But as for you, you have followed these things of mine." Now, what does verse 14 say? Let's read it: "But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know from whom you learned it." In a world full of false teachings and false teachers, Timothy is commanded to remain in what he learned from his teacher, Paul.

또한 15절을 보니 디모데가 배우고 확신한 일 그 두번째에 대해서 말을 하고 있습니다. 그것은 바로 성경이었습니다. 디모데는 어려서부터 성경을 알았다고 합니다. 15절 함께 읽겠습니다. “또 어려서부터 성경을 알았나니 성경은 능히 너로 하여금 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음으로 말미암아 구원에 이르는 지혜가 있게 하느니라” 15절에서 말하고 있는 성경의 능력은 무엇입니까? 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음. 그 믿음으로 말미암아 구원. 그 구원에 이르게 하는 지혜가 있게 한다고 합니다. 성경을 아는 것이 ‘능히’ 디모데로 하여금 이렇게 구원에 이르는 믿음과 지혜가 있게 한다는데 그렇다면 성경에 어떻게 이런 능력이 있을 수 있습니까? 16절 함께 읽겠습니다. “모든 성경은 하나님의 감동으로 된 것으로 교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익하니” 여기서 하나님의 감동으로 된 것이라는 말은 하나님의 숨을 불어넣으셨다는 뜻입니다. 이는 하나님의 영, 즉 성령께서 말씀 가운데 거하신다는 것이지요. 그 성령은 어떤 분이십니까? 요한복음 14:26 제가 읽겠습니다. “보혜사 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령 그가 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하리라” 성령님은 우리에게 모든 것을 가르치시는 분이십니다. 그 성령께서 성경을 통하여 하나님의 말씀을 우리에게 가르쳐 주시는 것입니다. 그러므로 교훈과 책망과 바르게 함과 의로 교육하기에 유익하다고 말씀하고 계시는 것입니다. ‘교훈’은 진리를 가르치는 것, ‘책망’은 죄를 드러내고 잘못을 지적하는 것, ‘바르게 함’은 넘어진 자를 다시 일으켜 세우는 회복의 과정을, ‘의로 교육함’은 의로운 삶을 위한 훈련과 훈육을 의미합니다. 이것들은 모두 거짓 교사들의 활동에 대응하는 성경의 기능들이지요. 그래서 17절은 이를 이렇게 이야기합니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “이는 하나님의 사람으로 온전하게 하며 모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 하려 함이라” 성경의 말씀이 하나님의 사람으로 온전하게 한다고 합니다. 모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 한다고 하시는데 이 말씀을 보니 며칠 전의 깨끗한 그릇의 비유가 다시 생각납니다. 큰 집에 있던 금 그릇과 은 그릇, 기억하십니까? 2:21 제가 읽어보겠습니다. “그러므로 누구든지 이런 것에서 자기를 깨끗하게 하면 귀히 쓰는 그릇이 되어 거룩하고 주인의 쓰심에 합당하며 모든 선한 일에 준비함이 되리라” 모든 선할 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 하려 함이라, 모든 선한 일에 준비함이 되리라. 성경의 말씀이 바로 하나님의 모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추게 하는 것입니다.

2. What Timothy Learned and Was Convinced Of: The Holy Scriptures (vv. 15-17)

Verse 15 speaks of the second thing Timothy learned and was convinced of: the Holy Scriptures. Timothy had known the Scriptures since he was a child. Let's read verse 15 together: "and how from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."

What is the power of Scripture mentioned in verse 15? It is able to give wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. If knowing the Scriptures is "able" to lead Timothy to this saving faith and wisdom, how can the Scriptures possess such power?

Let's read verse 16: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness."

The phrase "God-breathed" means that God has breathed His own breath—His Spirit—into the Scriptures. Who is the Holy Spirit? Let me read John 14:26: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."

The Holy Spirit is our Teacher. The Spirit teaches us God's Word through the Scripture. Therefore, the Scripture is useful for "teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness." 'Teaching' refers to instructing in the truth; 'rebuking' is exposing sin and pointing out error; 'correcting' is the process of restoration, raising up those who have fallen; and 'training in righteousness' is discipline and instruction for a righteous life. These functions directly counter the activities of the false teachers.

Finally, verse 17 summarizes the purpose of Scripture. Let's read it together: "so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." The Word of Scripture makes the servant of God complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

This reminds us of the analogy of the clean vessel we saw a few days ago. Do you remember the vessels of gold and silver in the large house from 2:21? I will read it: "Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master, prepared for every good work." The Word of Scripture is what thoroughly equips us for every good work of God.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘의 말씀은 두 번, “그러나, 너는” 이라는 말씀으로 디모데가 거짓 교사들과 어떻게 그들과 구별되야 하는지 말해주고 있습니다. 그것은 무엇이었습니까? 먼저는 스승의 삶과 신앙을 곁에서 따르며 배웠던 것이었습니다. 두번째는 어려서부터 알았던 성경이었습니다. 참된 교사의 가르침을 통해 배웠던 것들과 성경을 통해 확신한 구원. 오늘 말씀은 그래서 디모데에게 “그러나 너는, 배우고 확신한 일에 거하라” 라고 말하고 있는 것입니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 거짓 교사들과 거짓 가르침들이 만연한 세상에서 참된 목자에게서 배웠던 것들과 성경의 말씀안에 거해야 할것입니다.

Conclusion

Today's message uses the phrase "But as for you" twice to tell Timothy how he must distinguish himself from the false teachers. What were the two foundations? First, following the life and faith of his teacher, Paul. Second, the Scriptures he had known since childhood. The salvation that was learned through the true teacher's instruction and confirmed through the Scriptures.

Therefore, today's passage commands Timothy: "But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of."

The same applies to us. In a world overrun by false teachers and false teachings, we must remain in what we have learned from our true spiritual guides and in the enduring Word of the Scripture. Amen.
