2:1 내 아들아 그러므로 너는 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 은혜 가운데서 강하고

2:2 또 네가 많은 증인 앞에서 내게 들은 바를 충성된 사람들에게 부탁하라 그들이 또 다른 사람들을 가르칠 수 있으리라

2:3 너는 그리스도 예수의 좋은 병사로 나와 함께 고난을 받으라

2:4 병사로 복무하는 자는 자기 생활에 얽매이는 자가 하나도 없나니 이는 병사로 모집한 자를 기쁘게 하려 함이라

2:5 경기하는 자가 법대로 경기하지 아니하면 승리자의 관을 얻지 못할 것이며

2:6 수고하는 농부가 곡식을 먼저 받는 것이 마땅하니라

2:7 내가 말하는 것을 생각해 보라 주께서 범사에 네게 총명을 주시리라

1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. 5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. 7 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.

2:8 내가 전한 복음대로 다윗의 씨로 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나신 예수 그리스도를 기억하라

2:9 복음으로 말미암아 내가 죄인과 같이 매이는 데까지 고난을 받았으나 하나님의 말씀은 매이지 아니하니라

2:10 그러므로 내가 택함 받은 자들을 위하여 모든 것을 참음은 그들도 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 구원을 영원한 영광과 함께 받게 하려 함이라

8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

2:11 미쁘다 이 말이여 우리가 주와 함께 죽었으면 또한 함께 살 것이요

2:12 참으면 또한 함께 왕 노릇 할 것이요 우리가 주를 부인하면 주도 우리를 부인하실 것이라

2:13 우리는 미쁨이 없을 지라도 주는 항상 미쁘시니 자기를 부인하실 수 없으시리라

11 Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,

    we will also live with him;

12 if we endure,

    we will also reign with him.

If we disown him,

    he will also disown us;

13 if we are faithless,

    he remains faithful,

    for he cannot disown himself.

우리들의 주인공 척은 미국 최대의 택배 회사인 페덱스의 임원입니다. 그는 전세기를 타고 출장을 가던중 비행기가 추락하여 홀로 무인도에 깨어납니다. 그는 파도에 떠 밀려온 소포들을 뜯어서 생존에 도움이 되는 물건을 몇가지 얻습니다. 하지만 한 쌍의 황금 천사 날개가 그려진 소포는 차마 뜯지 못했습니다. 척은 무인도에서 홀로 생존하기 위해 처절하게 노력했습니다. 불을 피다가 다친 손에서 흘린 피로 하얀색 배구공에 사람 얼굴을 그리고는 윌슨 Mr. Wilson 이라고 부르며 대화를 나누면서 외로움을 달랬습니다.

그는 4년 동안 생존한 무인도를 탈출하기로 결심합니다. 그는 뗏목을 만들고 윌슨과 뜯지 않은 페덱스 소포를 뗏목에 싣고 탈출합니다. 폭풍을 만나 밤새 힘쓰다 잠 든 아침, 윌슨이 바다에 빠져 뗏목에서 점점 멀어져 갑니다. 잠에서 깨어난 척은 사라진 윌슨을 찾다가 파도에 밀려 멀리 흘러 간 윌슨을 발견하고는 바다에 뛰어들지만 도저히 윌슨을 구할 수 없습니다. 결국 그는 오열하며 겨우 다시 뗏목에 올라와서는 모든 것을 포기하고 죽음을 기다립니다. 그러던 중 기적적으로 지나가는 컨테이너선에 의해 구조 됩니다.

Our story’s main character, Chuck, is an executive at FedEx, the largest delivery company in the U.S. While on a business trip aboard a private plane, he crashes and wakes up alone on a deserted island. He opens several packages that have washed ashore and finds a few items useful for survival—but one package, decorated with golden angel wings, he cannot bring himself to open.

Chuck desperately struggles to survive alone. One day, he injures his hand while making fire, and with his own blood, he draws a face on a white volleyball, naming it “Wilson.” Talking to Wilson becomes his way of coping with the crushing loneliness.

After four years, he decides to escape. He builds a raft, takes Wilson and the unopened FedEx package, and sets sail. A storm hits, and after a long, exhausting night, Wilson falls into the sea and drifts away. Chuck dives in to rescue him but fails. Heartbroken and exhausted, he returns to the raft, gives up hope, and waits to die—until he is miraculously rescued by a passing cargo ship.

하지만 4년의 시간은 많은 것을 바꾸어 놓았습니다. 그의 연인이었던 켈리는 이미 다른 남성과 결혼하여 딸까지 낳았습니다. 척은 너무도 사랑하는 켈리에게 지금의 가정을 지키라고 말하고는 그녀와 이별합니다.

척은 무인도에서 가지고 나온 황금 날개 그려진 소포를 들고 집주소로  찾아가서 아무도 없는 집 문 앞에 놓고 나옵니다. 그렇게 나오는 길 사거리에서 어디로 갈지 몰라 멈춰선 척에게 어떤 여성이 멈춰 서서 길을 설명해 주고 떠납니다. 떠나가는 픽업 트럭 뒤에는 황금 날개 문양이 그려져 있습니다. 그녀가 가는 길 방향을 바라보는 척의 얼굴에는 옅은 미소가 피어나며 영화가 마무리 됩니다. 

2000년 12월 22일에 개봉한 톰 행크스 주연의 영화 캐스트 어웨이Cast Away 입니다. 그가 무인도에서 가지고 나온 월슨과 페덱스 소포는 척이 끝까지 포기하지 않았던 사명과 인간관계를 상징합니다. 아니 오히려 사명과 친구가 그를 4년 동안 무인도에서 홀로 버틸 수 있는 힘이 되었던 것입니다. 제목 캐스트 어웨이는 조난자라는 의미이지만 동시에 버려진, 버리다, 낭비하다는 의미도 있습니다. 척이 구조된 후 스위치만 누르면 불이 붙는 라이터, 전기 스위치, 파티 후 마구 버려지는 초밥과 킹크랩을 보면서 생각에 잠기는 모습은 제목이 의미하는 바가 이중적임을 알게 합니다. 우리가 버려야 할 것과 지켜야 할 것을 구분하는 것만큼 중요한 것은 없습니다.

Yet, four years have changed everything. His beloved Kelly has married someone else and has a daughter. Though heartbroken, Chuck tells her to protect her family and says goodbye.

He then takes the unopened package with golden wings to the address on the label, leaves it at the door, and walks away. At a crossroads, not knowing where to go, a woman stops and gives him directions. As she drives off, he notices the same golden wings painted on the back of her truck. Chuck gazes down the road she took, and a faint smile appears on his face—the movie ends there.

This is the 2000 film Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks. The volleyball “Wilson” and the unopened FedEx package symbolize Chuck’s unyielding sense of mission and relationship—things that sustained him through four lonely years. The title Cast Away means “shipwrecked,” but it also carries the meanings of “discarded” and “wasted.” After his rescue, Chuck’s contemplation as he observes how easily people waste things—lighting a fire with a switch, flipping on electricity, throwing away sushi and king crab after parties—reveals the dual meaning of the title. Knowing what to keep and what to discard is one of life’s most important lessons.

예수 그리스도의 좋은 병사가 되라 (1~7절)

디모데후서는 사도 바울이 A.D. 67년 로마 감옥에서 보내는 마지막 편지로 마치 유서와 같은 편지입니다.

바울은 아들과 같은 후배 목회자요, 전도자인 디모데가 버려야 할 것과 지켜야 할 것이 무엇인지를 알려줍니다.

첫번째는 강해지는 것입니다(1절).

바울은 디모데를 내 아들아라고 부릅니다. 이것은 너 내 아이야 라는 아주 따뜻한 표현입니다. 바울은 결혼하지 않았지만, 디모데를 마치 아들처럼 생각하며 가르치고 훈련시켰습니다. 그에게 가장 먼저 권면하는 것은 강해지라는 것입니다. 현대 기독교의 문제는 그리스도인들이 너무 나약했졌다는 것입니다.  우리는 사자 앞에서도, 십자가 앞에서도 신앙을 포기하지 않았던 야성을 회복해야 합니다. 담대함이 필요합니다. 그리고 그 담대함의 근거가 바로 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 은혜입니다. 강해지되 디모데와 같은 내성적인 사람이 이를 악물고 하는 의지적 노력을 하라는 의미가 아닙니다.

강하고는 단순수동형으로 은혜로 말미암아, 은혜를 통하여 강해지는 것(딤후 1:7)을 의미하는 것입니다.

두번째는 재생산하라 입니다(2절).

기독교가 부흥할 수 있었던 원인은 바로 재생산(제자화)의 법칙 때문입니다. 땅끝까지 이르러 제자를 삼아 복음을 가르치고 지키게 해야 합니다. 내가 살아있다면 자연스럽게 재생산하게 됩니다. 생명이 생명을 낳는 것입니다. 그런데 조건은 충성된 사람을 제자 삼아 복음전도자로 세워야 합니다.

세번째는 예수의 좋은 병사가 되라 입니다(3절).

병사는 훈련이라는 고난을 통해서 위대한 군인이 됩니다. 좋은 병사란 고난을 포함한 단어이고, 훌륭한 선수 또한 마찬가지입니다. 좋은 병사의 또 다른 특징은 자기의 사사로운 생활에 얽매이지 않고 주인에게 충성하는 것입니다. 이처럼 병사의 목적은 모집한 자를 기쁘게 하는 것입니다. 바울은 운동선수와 농부의 비유를 통해서 비슷한 원리를 가르칩니다. 사역자들은 이러한 사도의 교훈을 묵상해야 합니다(7). 그렇게 할 때 주님께서 주의 일을 위해서 일꾼들에게 지혜와 총명을 주십니다.

Be a Good Soldier of Christ Jesus (vv. 1–7)

Second Timothy is the Apostle Paul’s final letter, written from a Roman prison around A.D. 67—a kind of last will.Paul teaches his spiritual son Timothy what he must discard and what he must hold on to.

1. Be strong. (v.1)Paul calls Timothy “my son”—a tender, affectionate phrase. Though Paul was unmarried, he treated Timothy like his own child, teaching and training him closely. His first exhortation is to “be strong.” The weakness of modern Christianity often comes from believers who have lost their spiritual courage. We must recover the boldness of those who never renounced their faith even before lions or the cross.This strength, however, is not from sheer willpower—especially for someone as gentle and reserved as Timothy—but comes “through the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” Strength in this verse is in the passive voice: it means to be strengthened by grace, not to strengthen oneself (cf. 2 Tim 1:7).

2. Reproduce. (v.2)The secret of Christianity’s growth has always been the principle of reproduction—disciples making disciples. Wherever there is life, life begets life. Timothy is told to entrust the gospel to faithful people who will, in turn, teach others.

3. Be a good soldier of Jesus Christ. (v.3)A soldier becomes great through the suffering of training. Likewise, a good soldier endures hardship. Another mark of a good soldier is that he does not get entangled in civilian affairs but seeks to please his commanding officer.Paul also compares this to an athlete and a farmer—both of whom labor and persevere toward a goal. Those who serve the Lord must meditate on these truths (v.7), for through them, God gives wisdom and insight for His work.

예수 그리스도를 기억하라 (8~13절)

예수 그리스도를 기억하는 것은 기독교의 핵심입니다. 예수를 기억할 때 우리는 사명을 완수할 수 있습니다.  사탄이 복음을 전하는 그 사람을 괴롭히고 잡아 묶을 수는 있지만, 복음 자체는 막을 수 없습니다(9). 실제로 기독교의 부흥은 고난이 있을수록 더 강하게 성장하고 퍼져 나갔습니다. 사도가 자신의 고난을 감수하는 이유도 택함 받은 자들이 구원을 영원한 영광과 함께 받도록 하기 위해서 입니다.

바울은 주님의 미쁘신 말씀을 노래합니다. 하나님의 말씀은 절대로 변함이 없습니다. 그러므로 주님과 함께 죽는 자는 반드시 주님처럼 부활할 것입니다. 그러므로 먼저 우리에게 필요한 것은 죽는 것입니다. 신앙 생활은 바로 내가 죽는 것입니다. 제자 훈련은 다른 것이 아닌 나를 부인하는 훈련입니다. 세례도 마찬가지입니다. 옛 사람을 버리는 것입니다. 문제는 자꾸 죽은 줄 알았던 옛 사람이 벌떡 벌떡 일어나는 것입니다.

죽은 줄 알았지만 잠시 기절했던 것 뿐입니다. 마치 설거지 물과 같습니다. 음식찌꺼기가 가라 앉아 깨끗하게 보이지만 한 번 건드리면 가라앉아 있던 밥알, 고추가루, 콩나물 대가리 올라옵니다. 얼마나많은 문제들이 교회와 가정에서 벌어집니까? 다 안 죽어서 그런 것입니다. 우리 모두 말씀 가운데 죽읍시다. 이렇게 고난 가운데 참고 견딤으로 스스로를 죽이는 자는 미쁘신 주님의 약속대로 주와 함께 왕 노릇할 것입니다.

Remember Jesus Christ (vv. 8–13)

To remember Jesus Christ is the very heart of Christianity. Only by remembering Him can we complete our mission. Though Satan may persecute the messenger, he cannot chain the gospel itself (v.9). In fact, history shows that Christianity has always grown stronger through suffering. Paul willingly endures hardship so that the chosen may obtain salvation and eternal glory.

He then recites a trustworthy saying:If we die with Him, we will also live with Him.If we endure, we will also reign with Him.If we disown Him, He will disown us.But if we are faithless, He remains faithful—He cannot deny Himself.

Thus, the first step is to die with Him. True faith means dying to oneself. Discipleship training is not about gaining new skills—it is about denying the self. Baptism symbolizes the same: putting off the old self.

Yet often, the “old self” that we thought was dead keeps rising up again. It’s like dirty dishwater—when it looks clear, the residue only lies at the bottom. Stir it, and bits of rice, pepper flakes, and bean sprouts float to the top. So it is with our hearts—many of the problems in churches and homes come because the old self isn’t truly dead.

Let us die to ourselves in the Word. Those who endure and put their old selves to death through suffering will one day reign with Christ, as He faithfully promised.

좋은 병사가 되기 위해서는 고난의 훈련이 필요합니다. 힘들면 힘들수록 더 훌륭한 특수부대원이 됩니다.

조개가 진주를 만들어 내는 방법을 아십니까? 몸 속에 들어온 모래가 연약한 살을 아프게 해서 너무 괴로워 진액을 쏟아내서 그 이물질을 감싸고 그것이 굳어져 진주가 된다고 합니다.

여러 종류의 어려움은 연약한 우리가 강한 주님의 용사가 되기 위한 과정입니다. 사실은 고난 정도가 아니라 내 자신이 완전히 죽어야만 부활의 능력을 경험할 수 있습니다. 내가 죽어야 합니다. 왜냐하면 그것이 부활의 능력을 경험하는 유일한 방법이기 때문입니다.

내가 버려야 할 것과 지켜야 할 것이 무엇인지 정확하게 기억합시다.

예수를 기억하고 복음에 매여 우리를 부르신 주님을 기쁘시게 하는 제자가 됩시다. 할렐루야!

To become a good soldier, one must undergo the training of suffering. The harder the training, the stronger the soldier. Do you know how a pearl is made? A grain of sand enters a clam and irritates its soft flesh. In pain, the clam secretes layers of nacre around it—and that irritation hardens into a beautiful pearl.

Likewise, hardships are God’s process of turning our weakness into strength. In truth, it’s not just about suffering—we must die completely to experience the power of resurrection.Because death is the only path to resurrection life.

So let us discern clearly what to discard and what to keep.Let us remember Jesus, cling to the gospel, and live to please the Lord who has called us.Hallelujah!
