15:1 믿음이 강한 우리는 마땅히 믿음이 약한 자의 약점을 담당하고 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니할 것이라

15:2 우리 각 사람이 이웃을 기쁘게 하되 선을 이루고 덕을 세우도록 할지니라

15:3 그리스도께서도 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니하셨나니 기록된 바 주를 비방하는 자들의 비방이 내게 미쳤나이다 함과 같으니라

15:4 무엇이든지 전에 기록된 바는 우리의 교훈을 위하여 기록된 것이니 우리로 하여금 인내로 또는 성경의 위로로 소망을 가지게 함이니라

1 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. 3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.” 4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.


15:5 이제 인내와 위로의 하나님이 너희로 그리스도 예수를 본받아 서로 뜻이 같게 하여 주사

15:6 한마음과 한 입으로 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하려 하노라

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.


15:7 그러므로 그리스도께서 우리를 받아 하나님께 영광을 돌리심과 같이 너희도 서로 받으라

15:8 내가 말하노니 그리스도께서 하나님의 진실하심을 위하여 할례의 추종자가 되셨으니 이는 조상들에게 주신 약속을 견고하게 하시고

15:9 이방인들도 그 긍휼하심으로 말미암아 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 하심이라 기록된바 그러므로 내가 열방 중에서 주께 감사하고 주의 이름을 찬송하리로다 함과 같으니라

7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed 9 and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written:


“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles;

    I will sing the praises of your name.”


15:10 또 이르되 열방들아 주의 백성과 함께 즐거워하라 하였으며

15:11 또 모든 열방들아 주를 찬양하며 모든 백성들아 그를 찬송하라 하였으며

15:12 또 이사야가 이르되 이새의 뿌리 곧 열방을 다스리기 위하여 일어나시는 이가 있으리니 열방이 그에게 소망을 두리라 하였느니라

15:13 소망의 하나님이 모든 기쁨과 평강을 믿음 안에서 너희에게 충만하게 하사 성령의 능력으로 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 원하노라

10 Again, it says,


“Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people.”


11 And again,


“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles;

    let all the peoples extol him.”


12 And again, Isaiah says,


“The Root of Jesse will spring up,

    one who will arise to rule over the nations;

    in him the Gentiles will hope.”

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.



                  요즘 MBTI라는 단어를 많이 들어보셨을 겁니다. 성격 유형 검사 중에 하나로 사람을 내향이나 외향, 감각과 직관 등 몇가지 분류하는 방법으로 그 사람에 대해서 알 수 있게 해주는 방법이지요. 자신이 어떤 유형의 사람인지, 또 내 배우자가 어떤 유형의 사람인지를 알게 해주어서 서로를 이해하고 용납하는데 큰 도움이 되기도 합니다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 저와 제 아내는 MBTI 상성으로 보면 최악이라고 합니다. 저희는 또래에 비해 어릴 때 결혼을 했는데 그 때문인지 남들은 신혼이라는데 저희는 졸혼을 할 뻔했습니다. 그만큼 많이 싸우고 서로를 이해할 수 없었죠. 그러나 저희가 마음을 고쳐먹고 서로를 용납하기 시작하면서 변화가 일어났습니다. 제가 깨달았던 것은 내 아내야 말로 좁고 편안한 나의 영역에만 머무르고자 하는 저를 끄집어내어 그 용량을 늘려주는 사람이었던 것입니다. 그 불편함 가운데서 우리가 서로를 용납하기 시작할 때 저희는 하나님의 크신 뜻을 조금이나마 엿볼 수 있었습니다. 지금은 최악의 상성임에도 불구하고 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있는 가정이 되어서 참 다행입니다. 오늘 말씀도 마찬가지입니다. 사도 바울은 하나님의 영광을 위해 서로를 용납하라라고 권면합니다. 심지어 그 모델로 그리스도를 언급하지요. 우리가 그렇게 한 마음이 될 때 우리는 한 입으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 될 것입니다. 오늘은 하나님의 영광을 위해 서로를 용납하라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.


Introduction: The 'Worst Match' and the Will of God

I’m sure many of you have heard the term MBTI recently. It’s a popular personality assessment that helps us understand ourselves and others by classifying people into types—like Introversion vs. Extroversion, or Sensing vs. Intuition. Knowing your type, or your spouse’s type, can be a great tool for understanding and mutual acceptance.

Here’s a fun fact: my wife and I are considered the worst possible match based on our MBTI scores. We got married relatively young, and while others were enjoying their honeymoon phase, we were nearly ready for a "divorce on arrival," if you will. We fought a lot; we simply couldn’t understand each other.

But a change began when we decided to change our hearts and genuinely start accepting one another. I realized something profound: my wife was the very person God sent to pull me out of my narrow, comfortable zone and expand my capacity. In that discomfort, as we began to embrace each other, we caught a glimpse of God's greater purpose. I am grateful that, despite being a 'worst match,' we are now a family that can bring glory to God.

Today's passage operates on a similar principle. The Apostle Paul encourages us to accept one another for the glory of God. He even points to Christ as the ultimate model for this acceptance. When we are united in heart this way, we will ultimately give glory to God with one voice. Today, I want to share a message under the title, The Glory of God: Our Reason to Embrace One Other.

                   바울은 로마 교회 성도들에게 권면합니다. 함께 1-2절을 읽어보겠습니다. “믿음이 강한 우리는 마땅히 믿음이 약한 자의 약점을 담당하고 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니할 것이라 우리 각 사람이 이웃을 기쁘게 하되 선을 이루고 덕을 세우도록 할지니라.” 사도바울은 음식에 자유한 사람들을 14장에서는 너희 라고 불렀었는데 본문 말씀에서는 우리 라고 부릅니다. 그렇다면 이들은 이방인일까요 아니면 사도바울과 같은 유대인일까요? 아마도 유대음식법에대한 배경지식이 없었던 이방인일 가능성이 크겠지요. 어쩌면 그들의 눈에는 아직도 율법에 매여있는 유대인들이 어리석어 보일 수 있지요. 하지만 바울사도는 이들에게 약한자의 약점을 담당하라고 합니다. 여기서 담당하라는 말은 기꺼이 그 짐을 들어주어라, 짊어주어라 라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 자기를 기쁘게 하지 말고 각 사람이 이웃을 기쁘게 하라고 합니다. 우리 어제 보았던 말씀과 동일한 메세지이지요. 나 자신의 자유를 누릴 권리를 내려놓고 형제를 배려하는 사랑을 하라고 말하고 있는 것입니다. “선을 이루고 덕을 세우도록 할지니라” 할 때에 이 선과 덕은 누구의 선과 덕을 말하고 있는 것일까요? 이웃을 배려하는 사랑으로 나의 선과 덕을 세우는 것일까요? 아닙니다. 그들의 선을 이루고 그들의 덕, 즉 그들을 높여주라는 말입니다. 정말 하나같이 어쩌면 이렇게 구구절절히 이웃을 사랑하라고 하시는지 모르겠습니다. 그리고는 그 정점으로 예수님의 예를 들지요 


1. Bear the Burdens of the Weak (Romans 15:1-4)

Paul appeals to the Roman believers. Let's read verses 1-2:

“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbor for their good, to build them up.” (Romans 15:1-2)

In the previous chapter (14), Paul referred to those who had freedom in matters of food as "you." But here, in our text, he includes himself and calls them "we." Who are these "strong" believers? They are likely Gentiles, who did not have the background of Jewish food laws. In their eyes, the Jewish believers, still bound by certain laws, might have seemed foolish or weak.

Yet, Paul instructs the strong to bear with the failings of the weak. The word "bear" here means to willingly lift their burden or carry it for them. Therefore, he says, "do not please yourselves," but "please your neighbor for their good." This is the same message we see throughout this section: relinquish your right to personal liberty in favor of loving consideration for your brother or sister.

The goal is to "build them up." This is not about building up your own righteousness or reputation by being generous. No, it means building up their good and their edification—raising their esteem and strengthening their faith. Time and again, the message is to love your neighbor.

Paul brings this command to its climax by using the ultimate example: Jesus Christ.

그것이 3절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “그리스도께서도 자기를 기쁘게 하지 아니하셨나니 기록된바 주를 비방하는 자들의 비방이 내게 미쳤나이다 함과 같으니라” 여기서 인용된 말씀은 시편 69:9말씀으로 예수님께서 자기를 버리시고 타인을 위해 고난당하는 모범이 되심을 보여주는 부분이지요. 무슨 말입니까? “예수님께서도 자신의 권리를 이렇게 포기하셨다. 자기를 기쁘게 하니 아니하셨다. 그러니 너희도 그렇게 하여라” 라는 말씀아니겠습니까? 자 그런데 이렇게 명령만 하셨다면 성도들의 마음이 좀 어려울 수 있었을 것 같습니다. 그래서일까요 바울사도는 그리스도의 예를 드는 목적을 이렇게 설명합니다. 4절입니다. 성경은 우리를 가르치기위해 기록된 것이다. 우리로 하여금 인내 또는 성경의 위로로 소망을 가지게 함이니라. 궁극적인 목적은 우리에게 소망을 가지게 하려는 것입니다. 이는 본문 마지막 절인 13절의 소망의 하나님, 그“소망의 하나님이 모든 기쁨과 평강을 믿음 안에서 너희에게 충만하게 하사 성령의 능력으로, 무엇이 넘치게?, 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 원하노라” 라는 말씀을 향하고 있는 것이지요.


Let's read verse 3: “For even Christ did not please himself but, as it is written: 'The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.'” (Romans 15:3)

This quote from Psalm 69:9 highlights how Jesus did not live to please himself but became the model of suffering for others. What does this mean? It means: "Even Jesus Himself gave up His rights and did not please Himself, so you must do the same!"

A command alone can be difficult, so Paul immediately explains the ultimate purpose of this example. Let's look at verse 4:

“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4)

The Scriptures were written to give us hope! This points directly to the ultimate goal in verse 13:

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)

어떤 소망입니까? 5절을 같이 한번 읽어보겠습니다. “이제 인내와 위로의 하나님이 너희로 그리스도 예수를 본받아 서로 뜻이 같게 하여주사” 자 주어가 누구입니까? 인내와 위로의 하나님입니다. 어떻게 하여주신다구요? 서로 뜻이 같게하여주사. 즉, 우리가 우리 힘으로 예수그리스도를 본받아 서로 뜻이 같아지라는 것이 아닌 것입니다. 인내를 주시고 위로하시는 하나님이 그렇게 하여 주신다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 우리로 예수님을 본받게 하셔서 우리가 서로 뜻이 같아지게되면 어떤 일이 일어납니까? 6절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “한마음과 한입으로 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하려 하노라” 우리가 한 마음이 되어 한입으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것. 바로 이것이 우리가 서로를 용납하고 서로를 위해 자신의 권리를 내려놓는 목적인 것입니다. 이것이야말로 우리가 하나님이 주시는 인내와 위로를 붙들고 소망해야 하는 것입니다. 이것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 우리의 힘이 아닌 하나님께서 해주셔야만 가능한 일인 것입니다. 오늘의 말씀은 그래서 7절 말씀 한 절로 요약이 됩니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “그러므로 그리스도께서 우리를 받아 하나님께 영광을 돌리심과 같이 너희도 서로 받으라” 여기서 같이 라는 말은 그리스도께서 하신 것 같이 하라는 말입니다. 명령하시니 어쩔 수 없이 견디는 것이 아니라 기꺼이 서로를 용납하라는 말입니다. 그리스도께서 그렇게 우리를 용납하심으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리셨습니다. 우리도 그렇게 서로를 기꺼이 용납함으로 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 하는 것입니다.


2. United for the Glory of God (Romans 15:5-7)

What kind of hope are we pursuing? Let’s read verse 5:

“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had,” (Romans 15:5)

Notice the subject of the sentence: The God who gives endurance and encouragement. He is the one who "give[s] you the same attitude." This is key! Paul is not saying, "You must strive in your own strength to imitate Christ and agree with one another." Rather, it is the God of endurance and encouragement who enables us to be of the same mind.

When God helps us imitate Christ and we become united, what is the result? Verse 6:

“so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:6)

This is the very purpose of accepting one another and laying down our personal rights: to glorify God with one mind and one voice. This is the hope we must cling to—a hope built on the endurance and encouragement provided by God. It is not an easy task, and it is impossible by our own power; it must be done by God's power.

Therefore, the entire passage is summarized in verse 7. Let's read it together:

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” (Romans 15:7)

The phrase "just as" (같이) is a command: Accept others in the same manner that Christ accepted you. This is not a grudging endurance but a willing acceptance. Christ accepted us, even to the point of death, to bring glory to God. We, too, must willingly accept one another to bring glory to God.

앞에서 사도바울이 ‘우리는’이라고 말할 때에 그들은 이방인일 가능성이 높다고 말씀드렸습니다. 바울은 이들에게 7절 말씀까지 하나님의 영광을 위하여 그들을 용납하라고 말하였습니다. 그런데 그들이 유대인들을 용납해야 하는 것에는 또다른 이유가 있었습니다. 그 이유를 바울은 8-9a까지의 말씀을 들어 이렇게 설명합니다. 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “내가 말하노니 그리스도께서 하나님의 진실하심을 위하여 할례의 추종자가 되셨으니 이는 조상들에게 주신 약속들을 견고하게 하시고 이방인들도 그 긍휼하심으로 말미암아 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 하심이라” 예수님께서 할례의 추종자 즉, 유대인으로 이 땅에 오신 것은 하나님께서 아브라함과 하신 약속을 지키셔서 당신의 신실하심을 보이기 위하심이었으며 그로 인하여 이방인들도 그 긍휼하심으로 말미암아 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려고 그렇게 하셨다는 것입니다. 즉, 예수님께서 먼저 유대인으로 오셔서 율법을 따르심으로 이방인들도 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있는 복음이라는 기회를 얻게 되었다는 것입니다. 그렇다면 그들은 복음을 누구에게 빚진 것입니까? 유대인에게 빚진 것이지요. 그 복음에 빚진 자들이 유대인들이 아직 구약에 매여있다고 그들을 업신여길 수 있습니까? 그럴 수 없지요. 9b-12절은 구약의 율법서와 역사서와 지혜서와 선지서를 인용함으로, 즉 구약 전체에 나와있는 이방인들이 유대인의 하나님 안에서 소망을 찾는 것을 보여주고 있습니다. 그 소망이 무엇이라구요? 우리가 서로 용납함으로 한 마음 한 뜻으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것.


3. The Foundation of God’s Truth (Romans 15:8-13)

Earlier, I suggested the "we" (the strong) in verse 1 were likely Gentiles. Paul calls on them to accept the Jewish believers for the glory of God, but there is an additional, deeper reason.

Paul explains this reason in verses 8-9a:

“For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed and, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy.” (Romans 15:8-9a)

Jesus became a servant of the circumcised (a Jew) to confirm God's promise to Abraham. By fulfilling the law, Christ opened the door for the Gentiles to receive the Gospel and glorify God for His mercy. The Gentiles gained the opportunity for salvation through the fact that Jesus first came to the Jewish people and upheld the Law.

If the Gentiles owe their Gospel opportunity to the Jewish people, can they look down on them for still clinging to the Old Covenant? No. They are debtors to the Jewish line.

Paul then reinforces this truth by citing the entire Old Testament (9b-12)—from the Law, History, Wisdom, and Prophets—to show that Gentiles finding hope in the God of the Jews has always been God's plan.

What is that hope? It is that by accepting one another, we become united in mind and spirit and glorify God with one voice.

말씀을 맺습니다. 우리는 하나님의 영광을 위하여 서로를 용납해야 합니다. 그리스도께서 우리를 죽기까지 용납하셨던 것처럼 우리도 기꺼이 서로를 용납해야 합니다. 그 때에 우리의 뜻과 마음이 하나가 되어 한 입으로 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있게 됩니다. 그러나 이것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그렇기에 우리는 말씀을 가까이 하고 하나님을 의지하여 말씀과 하나님이 주시는 인내와 위로로 소망을 가져야 합니다. 우리에게 소망을 일으키시고 그 소망을 충만케 하시는 하나님께서 여러분 가운데 모든 기쁨과 평강을 믿음안에서 충만하게 하셔서 성령의 능력으로 소망이 넘치게 하시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.


Conclusion: Overflowing with Hope

We are called to accept one another for the glory of God. Just as Christ accepted us even unto death, we must willingly accept each other. When we do this, our wills and hearts will become one, allowing us to glorify God with one voice. However, this is not easy. Therefore, we must draw near to the Word and rely on God, embracing the endurance and encouragement that He gives, so that we may have hope. May the God of hope, who stirs up that hope within you and makes it overflow, fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
