12:1 그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라

12:2 너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

12:3 내게 주신 은혜로 말미암아 너희 각 사람에게 말하노니 마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품지 말고 오직 하나님께서 각 사람에게 나누어 주신 믿음의 분량대로 지혜롭게 생각하라

12:4 우리가 한 몸에 많은 지체를 가졌으나 모든 지체가 같은 기능을 가진 것이 아니니

12:5 이와 같이 우리 많은 사람이 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되었느니라

12:6 우리에게 주신 은혜대로 받은 은사가 각각 다르니 혹 예언이면 믿음의 분수대로,

12:7 혹 섬기는 일이면 섬기는 일로, 혹 가르치는 자면 가르치는 일로,

12:8 혹 위로하는 자면 위로하는 일로, 구제하는 자는 성실함으로, 다스리는 자는 부지런함으로, 긍휼을 베푸는 자는 즐거움으로 할 것이니라

Humble Service in the Body of Christ

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

                  오늘 말씀은 ‘그러므로’ 라고 시작합니다. ‘그러므로’ 라는 말은 앞에서 얘기했던 내용이 뒤따르는 내용의 이유나 원인이 될 때 쓰는 말이지요. 그렇다면 어제의 말씀이 오늘 본문의 원인이 된다는 말인데 어제 말씀이 무엇이었는지 기억하십니까? 네, 인간이 헤아릴 수 없는 하나님의 길에 대해서 말씀드렸었습니다. 우리는 이해할 수 없지만, 유대인이든 이방인이든 모두를 순종하지 아니하는 가운데 가두어 두셨던 것이 그들 모두에게 긍휼을 베풀려하심이었다는 말씀이었지요. 이로서 우리는 구원이 우리의 어떠함이 아닌 오직 하나님의 긍휼하심이 이루신 일임을 알게 되었었습니다. 그것을 기반으로 오늘 말씀도 ‘그러므로’라고 시작하면서 이렇게 말하고 있지요. 1절입니다. “그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니” 하나님의 자비, 하나님의 긍휼하심으로 우리는 구원은 얻었기에 우리는 이제 그 자비하심에 걸맞는 삶을 살아야 합니다. 그렇다면 그 삶이란 무엇인가? 그것은 우리의 몸을 산 제물로 드리는 삶입니다. 오늘은 너희 몸을 산 제물로 드리라는 제목으로 말씀을 나누기 원합니다.

Today's passage begins with the word "Therefore." "Therefore" is used when a preceding statement is the reason or cause for the statement that follows. So, what we discussed yesterday serves as the foundation for today's text. Do you remember what yesterday's message was about? Yes, we spoke about God's ways being beyond human understanding. We saw that what was incomprehensible to us—God binding everyone, both Jews and Gentiles, over to disobedience—was His way of having mercy on them all. Through this, we learned that our salvation is not based on who we are, but solely on God's compassionate work.

                  바울 사도는 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 이렇게 권면합니다. “너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라.” 여기서 몸이란 우리의 육체 뿐만이 아니라 우리의 전 존재를 가르키는 말입니다. 우리의 모든 것을 산 제물로 드리라 이것이 영적 예배다 라고 말하고 있는 것이지요. 그렇다면 너희 몸을 산 제물로 드린다는 것은 무엇을 의미하는 것일까요? 우리는 그리스도와 함께 죽고 새 생명을 얻었습니다. 로마서 6:4 “그러므로 우리가 그의 죽으심과 합하여 세례를 받음으로 그와 함께 장사되었나니 이는 아버지의 영광으로 말미암아 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리심과 같이 우리로 또한 새 생명 가운데서 행하게 하려 함이라” 그리스도의 새 생명 가운데서 행하는 것. 그것이 곧 우리가 드릴 산 제사이며 영적 예배인 것입니다. 자 의미는 알았고 그러면 어떻게 사는 것이 산 제물로 드리는 삶인가? 2절 한번 같이 읽겠습니다. “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라” 명령으로 가득차있지요. 자 첫번째 명령입니다. “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고.” 본받다 라는 말은 원문으로는 짜여진 틀 안에서 그 모양이 틀대로 굳어지는 것을 말합니다. 즉 세상의 틀 안에 갇혀서 세상과 똑같은 모습으로 굳어지지 말라는 것이지요. 그런데 어떻게 그렇게 할 수 있습니까? 바로 두번째 명령, “변화를 받아.” 우리가 세상이라는 큰 틀 안에서 어쩔수 없이 굳어져가고 있을 때 그것을 막을 수 있는 방법은 우리가 본질적으로 변화되는 것입니다. 우리의 겉모양이 바뀌는 것이 아니라 우리의 속사람이 바뀌는 것이지요. 그런데 그것은 오직 무엇으로만 가능합니까? “오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로.” 자 여기서 마음이란 우리의 감정을 말하는 것이 아닙니다. 원문으로 보면 이성과 생각, 즉 감정이 아니라 이성적인 결단을 말하는 것이지요. 일시적인 감정으로 인한 변화가 아닌 우리의 생각을 고쳐서 이전과는 다른 방향으로 마음을 품는 것을 말하는 것입니다. 자 그렇게 할 때에 우리는 세번째 명령, 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인지 분별할 수 있게 됩니다. 여기서 분별이란 무언가가 가치있는지를 알아보려 할 때에 실제로 그것을 그 용도대로 써보거나 시험해보는 것을 말합니다. 즉, 우리가 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받을 때에 우리는 이 세대를 본받지 않고 하나님의 뜻이 우리의 실제 삶에 어떻게 이루어 지는지를 경험적으로 알 수 있게 되는 것을 말하는 것입니다. 그렇다면 2절에서 나타난 우리의 몸을 산 제물로 드리는 것의 핵심은 무엇입니까? “오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로”

Based on that foundation, today's passage also begins with "Therefore," saying in verse 1: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy." Because we have obtained salvation through God's mercy and compassion, we must now live a life that is worthy of that compassion. What does that life look like? It is a life of presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice. Today, I want to share a message titled, "Present Your Bodies as a Living Sacrifice."

The Apostle Paul urges us, in view of God's great mercy: "to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." Here, "body" refers not just to our physical flesh but to our entire being—our whole self. Paul is saying, "Offer your whole self as a living sacrifice; this is your spiritual act of worship."

What does it mean to offer your body as a living sacrifice? We have died with Christ and received new life. Romans 6:4 says, "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." Walking in the newness of life in Christ—that is the living sacrifice and the spiritual worship we are to offer.

So, we know the meaning, but how do we live a life of presenting a living sacrifice? Let's read verse 2 together: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

This verse is full of commands. The first command is: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world." The Greek word for "conform" refers to being pressed into a mold, where the shape becomes fixed according to the mold's pattern. In other words, do not be trapped in the world's mold and hardened into the same shape as the world.

But how can we avoid that? Through the second command: "but be transformed." When we are inevitably being hardened into the mold of this world, the way to stop it is to be fundamentally transformed. This isn't just an external change; it's a change of our inner self.

And how is that transformation possible? "by the renewing of your mind." Here, "mind" doesn't just mean our emotions. The original text refers to our reason, intellect, and thinking—it speaks of a rational resolve, not a temporary emotional shift. It means correcting our way of thinking and resolving to move in a different direction.

When we do this, we come to the third command: "Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is." The word "test and approve" means to practically examine or try something out to see if it is worthy or fit for its intended use. In other words, when we are transformed by the renewing of our mind, we stop conforming to this world, and we experientially discern and know how God's will is worked out in our actual lives.

So, what is the core of presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice, as shown in verse 2? It is "by the renewing of your mind."

                  3절 보시겠습니다. 3절에서 “마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품지 말고” 라는 말은 스스로를 마땅히 생각할 것 보다 더 높게 여기지 말라는 말입니다. 교만에 대해서 경고하는 말이지요. 하반절도 마찬가지입니다. “하나님께서 각 사람에게 나누어 주신 믿음의 분량대로 지혜롭게 생각하라”는 것은 각자가 그 믿음을 따라 스스로를 잘 판단해서 여기라는 말입니다. 그런데 교만하지 않고 스스로를 잘 판단해서 여기는 것이 우리 몸을 산 제물로 드리는 것과 무슨 상관이 있습니까? 4-5절에 그 이유가 나와있습니다.  같이 한번 읽어보겠습니다. “우리가 한 몸에 많은 지체를 가졌으나 모든 지체가 같은 기능을 가진 것이 아니니 이와 같이 우리 많은 사람이 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되었느니라” 우리 몸을 산 제물로 드리는 것은 궁극적으로 많은 사람을 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되게 합니다. 그런데 문제는 모든 지체가 같은 기능을 가진 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 우리가 만약 내가 가진 기능을 “마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품고” 여긴다면 우리는 한 몸을 이룰 수 없을 것입니다. 오히려 각 사람에게 나누어 주신 믿음의 분량대로 지혜롭게 스스로를 생각해야하는 것입니다. 그 때에야 우리는 많은 사람이 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되는 것을 경험 할 수 있는 것입니다. 누군가는 눈에 띄는 은사를 받았다고 교만할 필요도 없고 누군가는 보이지 않는 일을 함으로 무시당하여서는 안되는 것입니다. 우리의 부르심은 몸 전체를 위한 기능입니다. 6-8절도 이를 뒷받침하고 있습니다. 그것이 예언이든지, 섬기는 일이든지, 가르치는 일이든지, 위로하는 일이든지, 구제하는 일이든지 다스리는 일이든지 긍휼을 베푸는 일이든지 이 다양한 기능들 모두 그리스도 안에서 한 몸을 이루기 위하여 존재하는 기능인 것입니다. 우리는 그 한 몸을 이루기 위해 우리 각 개인의 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드려야 하는 것입니다.

Now, look at verse 3. The phrase "do not think of yourself more highly than you ought" is a warning against arrogance. It means not elevating yourself beyond what is appropriate. The second part of the verse says the same thing: "but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." This means each person should make a sound judgment about themselves, based on the measure of faith given to them.

But what does avoiding pride and having a sober judgment have to do with presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice? The reason is in verses 4-5. Let's read them together: "For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and individually members one of another."

Ultimately, presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice results in many people becoming one body in Christ. But the key point is that the members do not all have the same function. If we think of our function "more highly than we ought," we cannot form one body. Instead, we must think of ourselves with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has distributed to each person. Only then can we experience many people becoming one body and members of one another in Christ. No one should be boastful because they have a visible gift, and no one should be overlooked because they do unseen work. Our calling is a function for the benefit of the whole body.

Verses 6-8 support this. Whether it is prophecy, service, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, or showing mercy—all these diverse functions exist to form one body in Christ. We must offer our individual bodies as a holy and pleasing living sacrifice to God so that we can realize this one body.

말씀을 맺습니다. 오늘은 너희 몸을 산 제물로 드리라는 말씀이 어떤 의미이고 또 어떻게 행해야 하는지에 대해 나누었습니다. 먼저는 우리의 마음을 새롭게 하여야 합니다. 그렇게 할 때에 우리는 변화를 받아 하나님의 뜻을 우리 삶 가운데 경험하게 될 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 각자에게 주어진 은사들이 그리스도 안에 한 몸을 이루기 위하여 존재하는 것임을 잊어서는 안됩니다. 무엇이 더 높고 무엇이 더 낮은 은사는 없습니다. 그것을 기억할 때에 우리는 서로 연결된 지체가 될 것이며 그리스도 안에서 한 몸을 이루게 될 것입니다. 기억하십시오. 너희 몸을 산 제물로 드리라.

I close the message. Today, we discussed the meaning of the command to present your bodies as a living sacrifice and how we are to carry it out. First, we must renew our minds. As we do that, we will be transformed and experience God's will in our lives. Second, we must never forget that the gifts given to each of us exist to form one body in Christ. No gift is higher, and no gift is lower. When we remember this, we will be interconnected members and form one body in Christ.
