20250930 [새벽묵상] 인간이 헤아릴 수 없는 하나님의 길 | God's Ways Are Beyond Human Understanding (롬/Rom 11:25~36)

All Israel Will Be Saved

25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;

he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

27 And this is my covenant with them

when I take away their sins.”

28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Doxology

33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

    How unsearchable his judgments,

and his paths beyond tracing out!

34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?

Or who has been his counselor?”

35 “Who has ever given to God,

    that God should repay them?”

36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.

To him be the glory forever! Amen.

Do you know much about dimensions? A dimension is a measurement that defines the nature of space. To put it simply, we often describe 0-D as a point, 1-D as a line, 2-D as a plane, and 3-D as a solid. The space we live in is the 3-dimensional world. For us living in 3-D, points, lines, and planes are just the building blocks of our world; we don't need to understand them separately. Lines are formed when points are connected, planes are formed when lines are connected, and solids are formed when planes are connected. That's obvious, right?

But what if we had to explain the third dimension to a being living in the second dimension? It wouldn't be easy, would it? Because what is plainly visible and obvious to us is a concept that is difficult for a being trapped in 2-D to even grasp. Now, what if we tried to explain the third dimension to a being living in the first dimension? Could a being who only knows a world of lines ever understand a solid object?

From this, we see that the greater the difference in dimensions, the more difficult it is to bridge that gap in understanding. We simply cannot comprehend it, even if we try. Conversely, anything we cannot understand might be obvious to a higher-dimensional being that transcends our reality. What if the difference between humanity and God is that great? Can we, who are trapped in space and time, ever comprehend the wisdom and ways of God, who considers a thousand years as a day and exists in a dimension that transcends time? Today, I want to share a message titled, "God's Ways Are Beyond Human Understanding."

Today's text is actually the concluding part of the Apostle Paul's long argument regarding the salvation of Israel, which began in chapter 9. Paul, who had spoken about the Gospel that reveals God's righteousness and its power, began chapter 9 by lamenting that his own people, the Israelites, lacked faith in that Gospel. Yet, according to His mercy, God brought righteousness through Jesus Christ to both the undeserving remnant of Israel and the undeserving Gentiles. And Paul made it clear that even that faith is given by God's sovereignty and choice.

Today's passage says that this entire process is a mystery. Let's read verse 25 together: "I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in." God hardened Israel so that He could give faith to the Gentiles. So, can the Gentiles boast that they have faith and the Israelites do not, saying they are superior or "wise in their own estimation"? No, they cannot. Because all of this is God's work.

But the truly mysterious part is that because God hardened Israel, all Israel will be saved. Verse 26 begins with, "And in this way all Israel will be saved." It's difficult to understand how hardening them—making their hearts resistant to faith—actually leads to the salvation of all Israel. But look at verse 27. I'll read my translation for you: " 'The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.' "

What we learn from this verse is that salvation is not attained by the sensitivity of the human heart, but by God's unchanging promise. It is God's unwavering covenant, not the easily corrupted human heart, that will remove sins to accomplish God's salvation.

Verses 28-29 state a similar truth. Let's read them together: "As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable." Currently, from the perspective of the Gospel, Israel has become an "enemy" so that the Gentiles may be saved. But from the perspective of God's promise and election, they are still the beloved. Why is this? Because God keeps His promises. God's gifts and salvation given to Israel are not revoked. A time is coming when even those who are now opposed to the Gospel will receive salvation according to the promise. Who, then, is the agent of that salvation? God is.

Why does God act this way? Verses 30-31 imply that both Gentiles and Israelites, by their disobedience, were positioned to receive God's mercy. Verse 32 goes one step further. Let's read it together: "For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all." God intentionally "imprisoned" everyone in disobedience. Could they then obey? No. But paradoxically, through this, God intended to have mercy on everyone. Why on earth?

Last week, we saw what God said to Moses when He declared His name and caused His goodness to pass before him. Exodus 33:19: "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." The method God chose to show His mercy to everyone was to allow everyone to fall short of His righteousness. This is beyond our understanding. Yet, one thing is clear: through this, we have received God's compassion. Perhaps God's mercy is more valuable than anything else in this world. Is it possible that God was willing to make any sacrifice necessary to give it to us?

Perhaps the Apostle Paul glimpsed God's incomprehensible way through some kind of revelation. That must be why he could only burst into song about the depth and richness of God's wisdom and knowledge that he momentarily saw. Verses 33-36 are full of his awe and praise. Let's read verse 33 together: "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!"

We cannot comprehend God's wisdom and ways with our human minds and reasoning. But because of this, God chose to reveal Himself to us. Though we cannot trace His ways, we know His character: He is a merciful God. Does the passage not say that God bound everyone to disobedience so that He could have mercy on them all? We may not understand the how, but through this, God revealed the what of His mercy.

Romans 3:23 says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." But the important verse is the next one, verse 24: "and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." The compassion of God, which He was willing to give us through every sacrifice, was Jesus Christ Himself, more valuable than anything in this world.

I conclude the message. God's ways are beyond our understanding. But what we can know for sure is that everything is from God. Our life, our salvation, our justification—it all comes from God. Therefore, we have nothing to boast about. Let us only praise God's compassion! Let us praise Jesus Christ! To God alone be the glory forever and ever!
