10:1 형제들아 내 마음에 원하는 바와 하나님께 구하는 바는 이스라엘을 위함이니 곧 그들로 구원을 받게 함이라

10:2 내가 증언하노니 그들이 하나님께 열심히 있으나 올바른 지식을 따른 것이 아니니라

10:3 하나님의 의를 모르고 자기 의를 세우려고 힘써 하나님의 의에 복종하지 아니하였느니라

10:4 그리스도는 모든 믿는 자에게 의를 이루기 위하여 율법의 마침이 되시니라

1 Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

10:5 모세가 기록하되 율법으로 말미암는 의를 행하는 사람은 그 의로 살리라 하였거니와

10:6 믿음으로 말미암는 의는 이같이 말하되 네 마음에 누가 하늘에 올라가겠느냐 하지 말라 하니 올라가겠느냐 함은 그리스도를 모셔 내리려는 것이요

10:7 혹은 누가 무저갱에 내려가겠느냐 하지 말라 하니 내려가겠느냐 함은 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 모셔 올리려는 것이라

10:8 그러면 무엇을 말하느냐 말씀이 네게 가까워 네 입에 있으며 네 마음에 있다 하였으니 곧 우리가 전파하는 믿음의 말씀이라

10:9 네가 만일 네 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 네 마음에 믿으면 구원을 받으리라

10:10 사람이 마음으로 믿어 의에 이르고 입으로 시인하여 구원에 이르느니라

10:11 성경에 이르되 누구든지 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라 하니

10:12 유대인이나 헬라인이나 차별이 없음이라 한 분이신 주께서 모든 사람의 주가 되사 그를 부르는 모든 사람에게 부요하시도다

10:13 누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 받으리라

5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

유대인들이 하나님을 율법을 지키고자 하는 열심은 참으로 대단합니다. 안식일만 예를 들어보아도 금요일 저녁 해질 때부터 토요일 저녁 해질 때까지 안식일 기간동안 이들의 모든 삶의 방식이 조정됩니다. 이때 유대교 안식일법에는 금지하는 활동이 39개의 범주로 나뉘어져 있다고 합니다. 몇 가지만 간단히 살펴보면 음식물에 열을 가해 날 것을 굽는 행위는 금지됩니다. 그러므로 안식일이 되기 전에 미리 요리를 해놓고 따뜻하게 보온이 유지될 수 있게 미리 조치를 취해놓는다고 합니다. 머리털을 뽑거나 자르면 절대 안되기 때문에 빗질을 해서는 안됩니다. 대신 부드러운 털 빗을 부드럽게 사용하면 가능하다고 합니다. 전기 스위치를 켜고 끄는 행위도 절대 안된다고 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 안식일 전용 엘리베이터가 따로 있는데 탑승자의 의도와는 상관없이 각 층 마다 자동으로 문이 열리고 닫힌다고 합니다. 이처럼 각 항목마다 세세히 다 기억할 수 없을 정도로 다양한 종류의 법령들이 따라옵니다. 이것을 어떻게 다 기억하고 따를까요? 안식일에 안식하는 것이 아니라 오히려 율법을 어기지 않기위해 더 많은 노력과 에너지가 낭비되는 것 같습니다. 예수님 안에서 참된 안식을 누리면 참 좋겠는데요. 오늘 본문 말씀을 보면 사도 바울 또한 유대인들을 참으로 안타깝게 바라보고 있습니다. 이미 예수님은 이 땅에 오셔서 율법이 요구하는 모든 것을 이루셨기에 그 예수님을 믿기만 하면 되는데 유대인들은 그것을 깨닫지 못합니다. 유대인들이 이렇게까지 열심히 율법을 지키려고 하는 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 율법을 통해 의롭다함을 얻는다고 믿는 믿음으로서의 열심이지 않겠습니까? 그러나 오늘 본문에서 사도 바울은 말씀하십니다. “사람이 마음으로 믿어 의에 이르고 입으로 시인하여 구원에 이르느니라” (10절). 아멘! 함께 믿음으로 말미암는 의를 살펴보고 유대인들과 같이 헛된 열심을 살지않기 위한 신앙인의 자세를 함께 살펴봅시다.

The zeal of the Jews to keep God’s law is truly remarkable. Take the Sabbath, for example: from Friday evening at sunset until Saturday evening at sunset, their whole lifestyle is adjusted. Jewish Sabbath law is said to include 39 categories of prohibited activities. Let’s look at just a few. Applying heat to raw food for cooking is forbidden, so meals must be prepared ahead of time and arranged in such a way that they can be kept warm. Pulling out or cutting hair is strictly forbidden, so even combing one’s hair is not allowed—though gently using a soft brush is permitted. Turning electrical switches on or off is also forbidden. That is why special Sabbath elevators exist, which automatically open and close their doors at every floor regardless of the rider’s intent. As you can see, there are so many detailed rules that it is impossible to remember them all. How can anyone keep them? Instead of resting on the Sabbath, it seems even more effort and energy are spent trying not to break the law. How wonderful it would be to find true rest in Jesus! In today’s passage, the Apostle Paul looks upon the Jews with deep sorrow. Jesus already came to this earth and fulfilled everything the law required, so all that is needed is to believe in Him—but the Jews fail to see it. Why, then, are they so zealous to keep the law? Because they believe righteousness comes through the law. But Paul says in today’s passage: “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved” (v.10). Amen! Together let us consider the righteousness that comes by faith and reflect on the attitude of believers so that we may not live with vain zeal like the Jews.

유대인들이 하나님의 주권으로 선택받은 백성임은 변함없는 사실입니다. 그래서 하나님께서 모세를 통해 준 율법을 행하는 것은 하나님을 사랑하기에 자연스럽게 따라오는 행위인 것입니다. 그러나 사도 바울은 그들이 하나님께 열심히 있으나 이것이 바른 지식을 따른 것이 아니라고 말합니다 (2절). 이들의 문제는 그들이 지키고자 했던 율법을 향한 열심이 하나님을 위한 열심이 아니라 자기 자신들을 위한 열심이였습니다. 3절 말씀에 “하나님의 의를 모르고 자기 의를 세우려고 힘써 하나님의 의에 복종하지 아니하였느니라”라고 나옵니다. 유대인들은 하나님이 율법을 주신 참 의미를 이해하지 못한 채, 오히려 율법을 통해 타인과 자신을 구분 짓고 우월감을 느끼는 목적으로 사용했습니다. 그리고 행위를 통해 스스로 의를 쌓고자 했습니다. 그러나 그 누구도 그 의로움을 완벽히 행해낼 수 없었기에 율법은 유대인들을 정죄하는 기능만 할 뿐이었습니다. 그러니 이들은 이리저리 꼼수를 부리며 율법을 지키려고 고집을 부릴 것이 아니라 ‘아! 내가 율법을 지킬 수 없는 존재구나’를 율법을 통해 깨닫고 구세주의 필요성을 알아야 했습니다. 그래서 진정 예수님이 이 땅에 오셨을 때 이들은 예수님을 기뻐 맞이해야 했을 것입니다. 그러나 이들은 하나님의 의를 모르기에 하나님의 뜻인 예수님을 알아보지 못했습니다. 그리고 사도 바울은 예수님께서 모든 믿는 자의 의를 이루시기 위해 율법의 원래 목표를 완성하셨다고 말합니다 (4절). 예수님의 신실하심으로 말미암아 하나님이 계획하신 모든 일을 순종하심으로 성취하셨습니다.

It is an unchanging truth that the Jews are God’s chosen people by His sovereign will. Thus, keeping the law given through Moses should have been a natural expression of loving God. Yet Paul says, though they have zeal for God, it is not based on knowledge (v.2). Their problem was that their zeal for the law was not truly for God but for themselves. Verse 3 says, “Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.”

The Jews failed to understand the true meaning of the law. Instead, they used it to distinguish themselves from others, even to feel superior. They tried to build up their own righteousness by their deeds. But since no one could fully keep the law, it only served to condemn them. Instead of stubbornly clinging to loopholes in order to appear to keep the law, they should have realized through the law, “Ah! I am someone who cannot keep God’s law,” and recognized their need for a Savior. When Jesus came to this earth, they should have joyfully welcomed Him. But because they did not know God’s righteousness, they could not recognize Jesus, God’s will revealed. Paul explains that Jesus fulfilled the original purpose of the law in order to bring righteousness to all who believe (v.4). Through His faithfulness and obedience, Jesus accomplished everything God had planned.

그래서 사도 바울은 5절과 6절에서 ‘율법으로 말미암는 의’와 ‘믿음으로 말미암는 의’를 구별합니다. 율법으로 말미암는 의는 완전한 순종을 요구하기에 그 누구도 완수할 수 없는 길입니다. 반면에 믿음으로 말미암는 의는 우리에게 가까이 있어 우리가 하늘로 올라갈 필요도 아래로 내려갈 필요도 없습니다. (6-7절). 바울은 복음이신 예수 그리스도를 마음으로 믿고 입으로 시인하면 구원에 이른다고 선포합니다. 이제 새로운 구원의 길이 열렸습니다. 하나님의 뜻을 신실히 완성하신 예수님께서 나의 구주라고 입으로 고백하고 믿기만 하면 됩니다 (9절). 더 이상 희생 제물을 위한 제사법을 따를 필요도, 이스라엘 민족으로서 시민법을 따를 필요도 없습니다. 구약 성경에서 아직까지 효력이 있는 법은 도덕법이 남았는데요. 십계명이 여기에 포함됩니다. 이 도덕법은 예수님이 주신 가장 큰 계명 두 가지를 지키면 자연스럽게 지키게 됩니다. 다음과 같죠. “네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라”(마 22:37) 그리고 두 번째는 “네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라” (마 22:39). 그런데 이 두 가지 계명을 지키지 못해서 우리는 자주 넘어집니다. 하나님을 마음과 목숨 다해 사랑해야 하는데, 우리 자기 자신을 너무나 사랑합니다. 하나님의 나라를 우선하기 보다는 ‘내 직장’, ‘내 가정’, ‘내 비전’이 먼저가 되는 경우가 많습니다. 우리가 내 것이라고 여기는 것들이 사실은 다 하나님으로부터 온 것임을, 하나님의 은혜임을 잊는 순간 우리는 유대인들과 같이 형식 위주의 신앙 생활을 하게 될 것 입니다.

That is why Paul distinguishes in verses 5 and 6 between “the righteousness that is by the law” and “the righteousness that is by faith.” The righteousness that is by the law requires perfect obedience, a path no one can complete. But the righteousness that is by faith is near us—we do not need to ascend into heaven or descend into the deep to obtain it (vv.6–7). Paul proclaims that if we believe in Jesus Christ, the gospel itself, with our hearts and confess Him with our mouths, we will be saved. A new way of salvation has opened! All we need is to confess with our lips and believe that Jesus, who faithfully fulfilled God’s will, is our Savior (v.9). There is no longer any need to follow the sacrificial laws for offerings, nor the civil laws given specifically to Israel as a nation. In the Old Testament, the only laws that still remain in effect are the moral laws, which include the Ten Commandments. These moral laws are naturally upheld when we keep the two greatest commandments that Jesus gave us. They are as follows: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matt. 22:37), and, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39). Yet we stumble often because we fail to keep even these two. We are to love God with all our heart and soul, yet so often we love ourselves more. We put “my career,” “my family,” “my vision” ahead of God’s kingdom. When we forget that everything we have actually comes from God and is His grace, we risk living out a faith reduced to legalism and empty forms, just like the Jews.

마태복음 5-7장에서 산상수훈을 통해 예수님은 율법에 대한 새로운 해석을 우리에게 알려주셨습니다. ‘살인하지 말라, 간음하지 말라, 이웃을 사랑하라’ 등 기존에 알고있던 율법들에서부터 한 발짝 더 나아가 단순한 행위의 순종을 넘어서 마음의 순종을 요구하셨습니다. 누군가를 마음 속으로 미워만 하더라도 살인하는 것이며, 음욕을 품고 쳐다만 봐도 마음으로 간음한 것이며, 이웃을 사랑하는 것을 넘어서 원수를 사랑하라고 하십니다. 하나님의 우리의 행위를 보시는 것이 아니라 우리의 마음을 보십니다. 이때 이런 원망이 터져 나올 수 있어요. “이게 도저히 말이되는 명령입니까? 아무리 그래도 그렇지 인간으로서 감당 가능한 명령을 주셔야지 우리가 마음대로 마음을 조종할 수 있는 것도 아니고 눈에 보이는 걸 보는거고 마음에 미움이 솟아 나는데 이걸 어떻게 하라는 말씀입니까? 우리는 할 수 없습니다!” 빙고! 그렇죠? 우리는 할 수 없습니다. 이 고백이 우리의 고백이 되길 원합니다. 우리는 할 수 없기에, 감히 스스로 의로워질 수 없기에 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 것 입니다. 우리 모두 예수님 안에서 자유를 누리며 더욱 사랑합시다. 우리가 드리는 예배가, 우리가 드리는 헌신이 진실로 마음 깊숙히 예수님의 사랑함으로 충만해지길 기도합니다. 그렇게 했을 때 하나님의 뜻이 나의 뜻이 되고, 하나님의 비전이 나의 비전이 될 줄로 믿습니다.

In Matthew chapters 5–7, through the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave us a new interpretation of the law. From the familiar commands—“Do not murder, do not commit adultery, love your neighbor”—He went further, requiring obedience not only in actions but in the heart. To hate someone inwardly is murder. To look with lust is adultery of the heart. And beyond loving your neighbor, you must love your enemies. God does not merely look at our outward actions; He looks at our hearts. At this point, we might feel the urge to protest: “How can these commands possibly be reasonable? Surely God should give us commandments that humans can actually keep! We cannot control every thought. We see things with our eyes, hatred rises up in our hearts—what are we supposed to do? We cannot do this!” Exactly! That’s right—we cannot. And this must become our confession. Because we cannot, because we can never make ourselves righteous, Jesus came to this earth. Let us therefore enjoy freedom in Jesus and love all the more. May our worship and our service overflow from the depths of our hearts, filled with the love of Christ. When we do this, I believe that God’s will becomes my will, and God’s vision becomes my vision.
