4:18 아브라함이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었으니 이는 네 후손이 이같으리라 하신 말씀대로 많은 민족의 조상이 되게 하려 하심이라

4:19 그가 백 세나 되어 자기 몸이 죽은 것 같고 사라의 태가 죽은 것 같음을 알고도 믿음이 약하여지지 아니하고

4:20 믿음이 없어 하나님의 약속을 의심하지 않고 믿음으로 견고하여져서 하나님께 영광을 돌리며

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

우리는 어제 할례나 율법과 같은 모양이 중요한 것이 아니라 믿음이라는 본질이 중요하다는 말씀을 나누었습니다. 사도 바울은 그러면서 아브라함의 예를 들었지요. 아브라함은 우리 모든 사람의 조상이다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 유대인이나 이방인이나 모두 아브라함의 예를 따라 믿음으로 약속을 보장 받기 원하셨기 때문이라는 것입니다. 그러므로 우리가 믿을 때에 우리는 아브라함의 후손, 즉 상속자가 되는 은혜를 누리는 것이지요. 자 그렇다면 할례도 율법도 없던 시절에 하나님으로부터 의롭다 여김을 받았던 아브라함의 믿음이란 무엇이었는가? 우리가 그것을 알아야 우리 또한 믿음으로 아브라함의 후손이 되지 않겠습니까? 오늘 말씀 18절에서는 아브라함의 믿음을 이렇게 설명하고 있습니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “아브라함이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었으니 이는 네 후손이 이 같으리라 하신 말씀대로 많은 민족의 조상이 되게 하려 하심이라.” 아브라함이 어떤 믿음을 가졌다고 말씀하십니까? 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었다. 오늘은 이 믿음에 대해서 이야기했으면 좋겠습니다. 소망 없는 가운데 소망을 갖고 믿는 믿음이란 무엇인가 함께 보도록 하겠습니다.

We looked yesterday at how the essence of faith is what matters, not outward forms like circumcision or the law. The Apostle Paul used Abraham as an example, calling him the father of all of us. This is because God desired that all people, both Jews and Gentiles, would receive the promise through faith, following Abraham's example. Therefore, when we believe, we have the grace of becoming Abraham's descendants, his heirs.

So, what was the nature of Abraham's faith? How was he considered righteous by God in an age before the Law or circumcision? If we can understand his faith, we too can become his spiritual descendants. Today's passage, in verse 18, describes Abraham's faith this way. Let's read it together:

In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”

What kind of faith does the Bible say Abraham had? He "believed against hope." Today, I want to talk about this kind of faith: a faith that believes even when there is no hope.

오늘 말씀은 친절하게도 아브라함이 어떤 상황에서 어떤 믿음을 가졌었는지 그 예를 들어 설명해 주고 있습니다. 19절입니다. 함께 읽겠습니다. “그가 백 세나 되어 자기 몸이 죽은 것 같고 사라의 태가 죽은 것 같음을 알고도 믿음이 약하여지지 아니하고” 자 우리는 여기서 죽은 것 같음을 알고도 믿음이 약하여지지 아니하였다는 말씀에 주목할 필요가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 어제 말씀 17절에서 아브라함이 믿은 바는 “하나님은 죽은 자를 살리시며 없는 것을 있는 것으로 부르시는 이시니라” 라고 말씀하셨기 때문입니다. 즉 아브라함의 믿음이란 죽은 것 또는 죽은 자를 살리시는 분이 하나님이라는 것을 믿는 믿음이라는 것이지요. 그런데 19절 후반절에 들어가면 조금 의아하게 생각하는 분들이 생기실 것 같습니다. 오늘 말씀 19절과 20절에는 이렇게 말씀하고 계시지요. “그의 믿음이 약하여지지 아니하고 믿음이 없어 하나님의 약속을 의심하지 않았다.” 그런데 우리가 창세기에 적혀있는 아브라함 이야기를 읽으면 이 말씀과는 조금 다른 아브라함의 모습을 보게됩니다. 연약하고 불안해하며 환경에 지배를 받고 자신의 육체적인 한계에 영향을 받는 평범한 한 인간의 모습이지요. 그의 믿음이 약하여지지 않았는가? 믿음이 없어 하나님의 약속을 의심하지 않았는가? 거기에는 제가 대답할 말이 없습니다. 사도 바울이 저보다 더 잘 아시겠지요. 하지만 제가 말씀드릴 수 있는 것은 바로 그의 믿음이 견고하여졌다는 것입니다. 20절 하반절입니다. “믿음으로 견고하여져서 하나님께 영광을 돌리며” 그는 평범한 인간으로 우리와 같이 온갖 믿음의 시련을 겪었습니다. 분명 그의 믿음도 우리와 같이 출렁거렸을 것입니다. 그러나 그의 믿음은 견고하여졌습니다. 자 보십시오. 하나님께서 아브라함을 부르셔서 하란 땅에서 나왔을 때가 아브라함이 75세였습니다. 처음 부르실 때부터 그에게 후손에 대한 약속을 하셨습니다. 10년이 넘도록 자식이 없어서 종을 통해 이스마엘을 낳았습니다. 그리고 나서도 13년이 흐른 뒤에야 하나님께서 사라를 통해 자식을 낳을 것을 약속하십니다. 75세도 이미 늦은 나이입니다. 그런데 후손을 약속받고서 24년을 기다려야했습니다. 무슨 소망이 있겠습니까? 아내는 이미 경수가 끊어졌습니다. 모든 상황이 소망을 가질 수 없게 만듭니다. 그러나 오늘 말씀 18절에 그는 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었다고 합니다. 소망이 없는 상황 가운데서도 소망을 갖고 믿었다는 것입니다. 절망의 그 오랜 시간을 기다려오고 난 뒤에도 그의 믿음은 약하여지지 아니하고 견고하여졌다는 것입니다. 그래서 그는 능히 이루실 줄을 확신하였다고 말하고 있습니다. 이것이 아브라함의 믿음이었습니다.

The text graciously gives us an example of the situation Abraham was in and the kind of faith he had. Let's look at verse 19:

He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb.

We need to pay special attention to the phrase, "he did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead." This connects directly with what we saw in verse 17 yesterday, where it says that Abraham believed that God "gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist." In other words, Abraham’s faith was in a God who could bring life to what was dead.

Some might find verses 19 and 20 a little confusing. They say: "He did not weaken in faith... no unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God."

Yet, when we read the story of Abraham in Genesis, we see a man who is often weak and fearful, someone who is easily influenced by his circumstances and his own physical limitations. So, can we really say that his faith didn’t weaken? Or that he didn't waver in unbelief? I can't answer that. The Apostle Paul knew Abraham's story better than I do.

What I can say, however, is that his faith grew strong. Look at the last part of verse 20: "But he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God."

Abraham was a normal human being, just like us. He went through all kinds of trials of faith. His faith surely wavered just like ours does. But in the end, his faith became strong.

Consider this: Abraham was 75 years old when God first called him out of Haran and promised him a great multitude of descendants. For more than 10 years, they had no children, so Abraham and Sarah took matters into their own hands and had Ishmael. Even after that, it took another 13 years before God re-affirmed his promise, this time specifying that the child would be through Sarah.

He was 75 years old when the promise was first given, an old man by any standard. But he had to wait for another 24 years before the promise was fulfilled. What kind of hope could there be? His wife had long passed the age of childbearing. All circumstances pointed to hopelessness. Yet, verse 18 says that "in hope he believed against hope."

He held on to hope even in a hopeless situation. Even after waiting for so long through such desperate times, his faith did not weaken. Instead, it grew strong. And because of this, he was "fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised" (v. 21). This was Abraham's faith.

자 그렇다면 그 믿음이 우리와는 무슨 상관인가? 앞에서 우리는 믿음의 조상 아브라함의 후손이라고 하였습니다. 자 18절 다시 한번 읽겠습니다. “아브라함이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었으니 이는 네 후손이 이 같으리라 하신 말씀대로 많은 민족의 조상이 되게 하려 하심이라.” 자 여기서 이는 네 후손이 이 같으리라 라는 말씀은 원래 창세기 15:5 말씀을 인용한 것입니다. 하나님이 하늘의 별들을 보여주시며 네 후손이 이 별과 같이 많을 것이다 라는 말씀을 하셨었지요. 그런데 저는 오늘 말씀이 중의적이라고 생각합니다. 마치 믿음의 조상 아브라함이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었던 것처럼 믿음의 후손인 우리들도 아브라함과 같이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿는 것 같으리라 라는 말씀이라는 것이지요. 23절과 24절의 말씀입니다. 아브라함이 의로 여겨졌다 기록된 것은 아브라함만이 아니라 우리도 위함이다. 아브라함이 죽은 자를 살리시는 이를 믿었던 것 같이 우리도 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 이를 믿는 사람들이다. 우리는 죄를 지어 모든 소망이 끊어진 사람들이다. 의로우신 하나님 앞에서 우리가 마주해야 할 것은 우리의 죄의 댓가인 죽음 뿐이지요. 하나님의 의로우심이 우리의 죄악을 보신다면 당연히 진노하지 않겠습니까? 하나님이 죄를 보고 진노하지 않으신다면 하나님을 의롭다고 할 수 없지요. 그렇다면 죄를 지은 우리는 바랄 수 없는 자들인 것입니다. 소망이 없는 사람들이지요. 그러나 우리가 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿을 수 있는 것은, 소망이 없는 가운데서 소망을 갖고 믿는 것은 무엇입니까? 바로 25절 예수는 우리가 범죄한 것 때문에 내줌이 되고 또한 우리를 의롭다 하시기 위하여 살아나셨기 때문입니다. 우리는 바랄 수 없고 우리에게는 소망이 없지만 예수님께서 우리를 대신하여 우리의 죄를 지시고 십자가에 내버려져서 돌아가셨기 때문에 그리고 그 십자가에서 죽으신 예수님을 우리를 의롭다 하시기 위하여 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 하나님을 믿기 때문인 것입니다. 이것은 하나님께서 창세기에서부터 약속하신 것이며 하나님께서 능히 그 약속을 이루셨습니다. 그 약속을 믿는 자에게 그 믿음이 의로 여겨지는 것입니다.

So, what does that faith have to do with us? As we said, we are the descendants of Abraham, the father of faith. Let's read verse 18 again:

In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”

The phrase “So shall your offspring be” is a direct quote from Genesis 15:5, where God showed Abraham the stars and said, "so shall your offspring be." I believe this phrase has a dual meaning. Just as Abraham, the father of faith, believed against hope, so too his descendants—us—will believe against hope.

This is what verses 23 and 24 are about:

But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord...

Just as Abraham believed in the God who gives life to the dead, we too are people who believe in the God who raised our Lord Jesus from the dead.

We are people whose hope has been cut off by our sin. Before a righteous God, the only thing we have to face is death, the price of our sin. If God didn't show his wrath against sin, we couldn't call him righteous. So, we, as sinners, are people with no hope.

But what allows us to believe against hope, to have hope in a hopeless situation? It is found in verse 25: "who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification."

We have no hope on our own, but we can have hope and believe because Jesus was delivered up for us, carrying our sins, and was crucified. And we can believe in the God who raised him from the dead to justify us. This is what God promised from the very beginning in Genesis, and it is a promise God has fulfilled in Christ. This belief is what is counted as righteousness to us.

말씀을 맺습니다. 아브라함의 믿음, 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿는 믿음. 우리도 믿음의 후손이 되어 그와 같이 되기를 바랍니다. 소망 없는 가운데서 소망을 갖고 믿는 믿음. 비록 우리의 모습이 연약하고 불안해하며 환경에 지배를 받고 육체적인 한계에 부딪히는 평범한 것일지라도 우리의 믿음은 약하여지지 아니하고 견고하여지기를. 시련을 겪을 때에 출렁거릴 지라도 하나님을 향하여 올곧이 나아가 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 약속하신 그것을 능히 이루실 줄을 확신하는 자들이 되기를. 우리를 의롭다 하시기 위하여 자신의 생명을 내어주신 예수그리스도를 그 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 하나님을 믿는 자 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Let me conclude. Abraham's faith was a faith that believed against hope. I pray that we, as his spiritual descendants, would be like him. Even though we are ordinary people who are weak, anxious, controlled by our circumstances, and limited by our flesh, I pray that our faith will not weaken but will grow strong.

Even when our faith wavers in the midst of trials, may we stand firm, giving glory to God, fully convinced that he will do what he has promised. May we be people who believe in Jesus Christ, who was given for our sins, and in the God who raised him from the dead to make us righteous. I pray this in the name of the Lord
