20250903 [새벽묵상] 마음에 하나님 두기를 싫어하는 사람들 | People who have no desire to keep God in their minds (롬/Rom 1:18~32)

God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

There is a song I love called “Thorny Branch” (Gasinamu). It starts with a line that has always resonated with me: “Within me, I am far too many, so there is no place for you to rest. Within me, there are too many vain desires, so there is no comfort for you.” Many people assumed this song was about a selfish lover who left no room for their partner. However, the song's original writer, Reverend Ha Deok-gyu of the band "Poet and Village Elder," clarified that the song was not about a romantic relationship at all. He confessed that the true motif of the song was the conflict between God's Word and his own sinful nature.

And it’s true, isn't it? Within each of us, “I am far too many.” We find ourselves in a constant struggle where God often gets pushed to the back burner, becoming a secondary option rather than our first priority. But today's passage isn't just about this struggle; it speaks of those who, knowing God, actively refuse to welcome Him into their hearts. They are people who have no desire to keep God in their minds. Today, let's explore who these people are and what this means for us.

1. Those Who Do Not Desire God are Under His Wrath

The first point is that those who do not desire to keep God in their hearts are under His wrath.

Yesterday’s scripture told us that God's righteousness is revealed through the Gospel (v. 17). But today, verse 18 declares, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men." What is this wrath directed at? It's aimed at those who, by their unrighteousness, suppress the truth.

If God's righteousness is revealed through the Gospel, what unrighteousness would provoke His wrath? It is the act of suppressing and rejecting the truth of the Gospel. Today's passage describes these people in a powerful way. Verse 19 says, "For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them." God has clearly shown them what can be known about Him.

Let's read verse 20 together: "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse."

Notice that God's eternal power and divine nature are, by definition, invisible. But because God is the Creator, His power and divine nature are revealed in what He has created. We can, to some extent, experience and know God's invisible power and nature through the visible things He has made.

So, how does verse 21 describe these people? It says that even though they see the power and nature of God in creation, they are so foolish that they don't honor Him or give thanks. Instead, they use that knowledge in reverse. As verse 23 says, the invisible glory of God is reflected in the visible creation. But they exchange the glory of God for idols made in the likeness of created things, turning His glory into an object of worship. They saw God’s glory but chose to refuse to keep Him in their hearts. It is for this reason, Paul says, that the wrath of God is revealed against them.

What does this wrath look like? That leads us to our second point.

2. God Gives Them Over

The second point is that when people do not desire to keep God in their hearts, He gives them over.

The phrase "gave them over" is repeated throughout this passage. This is a legal term used in a courtroom when a judge hands a criminal over to their punishment. It means that God’s judgment is not an active intervention but a passive one—He steps back and allows them to face the consequences of their sin. The Bible says God gave them over in three ways.

First, God gave them over to spiritual depravity (v. 24). "Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity." The last part of this verse, "so that their bodies would be dishonored among them," might sound like it’s only about sexual immorality. But verse 25 makes it clear that God is talking about idolatry. The Bible frequently uses the metaphor of sexual immorality to describe the sin of idolatry. God simply gave them over to their spiritual rebellion.

Second, God gave them over to sexual depravity (v. 26-27). Let's read verse 26: "For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural." Verse 27 says the same for men, "and the men likewise abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error." It says they have already received the "due penalty" for their perversion. Yet, they are in a state from which they cannot escape on their own. And God’s judgment is to give them over to this very state.

Third, God gave them over to a depraved mind (v. 28). Let's read it together: "And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper." What good can come from a human mind without God? The only things that can exist in a mind without God are all the unrighteousness, wickedness, and sin listed in verses 29 to 31. God gives them over to this depraved, lost mind. This alone would make their lives a living hell, and this is what God's judgment looks like.

Conclusion

As I was reading today's passage, I thought about how similar the people of 2,000 years ago are to people today. Then as now, we find ourselves not wanting to keep God in our hearts. In our foolishness, we rush to chase after the visible idols of this world rather than the invisible God. Spiritually, sexually, and morally, we fall into depravity and sometimes believe that the success and pleasure we enjoy are gifts from God. We should take a moment to ask ourselves: Could it be that God is giving me over?

My prayer is that you will always keep God in your heart and sing like the song says, “Within me, God is far too many.” May you be blessed with a heart so full of God that He is not just an option, but the very essence of who you are.
